NEWS In Vogue With Mundy Veneer Mundy Veneer has announced its attendance at the UK’s only furniture components show, Elements on the 2nd – 5th October 2016. The British veneer supplier will be launching its highly anticipated 2016 Tabu Collection on stand K400 at the NEC this year alongside woodworking show, W16. NEWS Daltons Wadkin Mark 50 Years of Loyal Service Carol Bellaby, well known throughout the industry during almost 50 years of employment by Daltons Wadkin, retired on 12 May. Carol joined the company at the tender age of 18 in the year 1967 when the company still occupied their original premises under railway arches near the centre of Nottingham. Starting as a shorthand typist, going on to be secretary and later PA to MD Francis Dalton Carol was well known to most companies in the woodworking machine industry as well as to Daltons Wadkin’s wide customer base. She was the ever

reliable voice at the end of the telephone, always ready to assist the sales department and customers alike whether enquiries be large or small. She was also widely known to the industry press, having forged contacts with most of the prominent timber trade magazines over many years. Francis Dalton said, “We are sorry to lose Carol and I can’t believe that she has put up with me as her boss for 50 years! She has been an excellent ambassador for the company and we wish her good fortune in a well deserved retirement.” Carol and Francis Dalton with the retirement cake

James Latham Announce London Showroom Plus, A New A&D Team The UK’s biggest independent timber and panel products distributor, James Latham, has announced the opening of a new showroom in the heart of London’s A&D community. In addition, the business is also in the final stages of putting its own specialist, dedicated A&D team in place which will focus on servicing this sector. NEWS 30,000th Combilift handed over at CeMAT Combilift Ltd, the Irish specialist manufacturer of multidirectional forklifts, straddle carriers and other innovative handling solutions for long loads, containers and palletised goods recently celebrated a milestone in the company’s history. The 30,000th Combilift to roll off the production lines in Monaghan was officially handed over to its new owner during the CeMAT materials handling and logistics trade fair in Hanover, Germany. Managing Director Mr. Arno Sorger accepted the Combilift C14000 model on behalf of Haslinger Stahlbau, one of the major Steel construction companies in Europe. Established in 1949 and headquartered in Feldkirchen in Southern Austria, Haslinger Stahlbau also has facilities in Vienna, Munich and Dresden in Germany and Dunavecse in Hungary. Haslinger Stahlbau processes an annual amount of around 40.000 tons of steel to realise its varied construction projects – with this figure continuing to rise - and the new C14000 is its eighth Combilift. Various Combilift models with capacities ranging from 4 – 14 tonnes are in operation across its sites to ensure safe and productive handling and storage of its in part very heavy loads. Combilift has some way to go to catch up Haslinger Stahlbau’s longevity, but in terms of growth and success in the materials handling sector it has certainly made its mark since it was established in 1998. year on year growth has enabled what started as a small company offering a niche product to now be a major global name. Uniteam Joins Biesse Group Biesse Group, the Pesaro-based multinational company dedicated to manufacturing machines and systems for machining wood, glass, stone and composite materials (and listed in the STAR segment of the Italian Stock Exchange), has announced its acquisition of 100% of shares in Uniteam SpA. Since 1991, this Venetian industrial company, soon to be part of Biesse, has specialised in the design and manufacture of CNC multi-axis machining centres for wood construction materials, machining of advanced materials and a range of other special applications from automotive to prototyping, among others. This union will represent a harmonious integration of synergies, according to the

The WNA range allows each of the two cutting stations to work independently of each other. This solution allows users to simultaneously manage multiple stages of a single cutting pattern, significantly reducing production times.

X-Feeder: the new compact loading solution: The X-Feeder adapts automatically to different panel formats, thanks to the automatic positioning of suction cups depending on panel size. The loader can be configured with 2 or 3 arms depending on the characteristics of the materials to be processed, and can lift panels of up to 4400mm in length. This solution can be easily adapted to any manufacturing context, occupying a reduced footprint and optimizing the production.

The stroke of genius that increases machining centre profitability: In the current scenario, manufacturing companies are increasingly having to adapt to market demand: the ability to create custom commissions and provide one-to-one solutions is imperative to production. Synchro makes it possible to machine larger lots of panels, including those of different sizes, working alongside the machining centre to position each piece without the slightest interruptions. Moreover, the integration of Synchro into production process allows for businesses to optimize their costs, as the system works completely autonomously, even without an operator present. Accordingly, precious manpower is spared and can thus be used for activities with higher added value. Furthermore, inactive machine time for panel changeover is drastically reduced, and the risk of damage to materials resulting from handling of the panel by the operator is effectively eliminated.

Transforming A Single-Blade Beam Panel Saw Into An Angular Plant To satisfy the requirements of companies who increasingly produce items in small batches, Gabbinani presented the new FLEXCUT device (versions 1/S and 1/D). Due to its flexibility and productivity, the device can meet varying production requirements, often dictated by market trends, and at the same time maintaining an optimum level of competitiveness in terms of a fast return on investment. FLEXCUT, consisting of a mobile grippers unit whose stroke is completely independent of the main pusher, allows the cutting axis of a single-blade panel saw to be used as if it were an angular machine. This means that during the same

machining cycle it is possible to make both longitudinal and transversal cuts, increasing productivity by up to 40% and with a space saving of up to 20%. The extreme flexibility of the device is also guaranteed by the presence of the main pusher grippers, which can be excluded from the machining area, so that strips with different widths can be secured and as a result any type of different cutting can be performed without limiting the stroke.

Planet P800 The Revolution in CNC Edgebanding Morbidelli presented a world exclusive: the latest edgebanding unit, installed on the planet p800. HOMAG UK Provides Integrated Solutions for James Johnson Over the last 24 years, James Johnson has achieved recognition as one of the leading specialists in bespoke joinery, providing clients, architects and interior designers with products of exceptional quality and reliability. The company turns over £11m and works with leading names such as Overbury plc, Lend Lease and ISG, completing projects for the likes of the National Theatre, Sky and BP. Based in Dagenham, the company has dealt with HOMAG UK for many years, its first purchase being a second hand BRANDT edgebander. “The nature of our work requires that we invest in the best machinery possible,” explains Ian Silk, James Johnson’s joinery director. He continues, “Last year we were looking to invest in a CNC, a new edgebander and a beam saw. “When we carried out our research

which included evaluating four or five brands, we were extremely impressed with the quality and performance of the HOMAG Group machinery. At the time, HOMAG was planning to have a HOLZMA beam saw and a BRANDT edgebander on show at the W14 exhibition and so we did a deal to purchase the HOLZMA HPP 300 beam saw and BRANDT Ambition 1650 FC from the exhibition.”

One good thing leads to another “At W14 we also saw the WEEKE Vantage 100 CNC and the BHX 055 vertical CNC machines in action and, as one of our existing flatbed CNCs had just broken down, we made the decision to invest in both the Vantage and the BHX CNCs. “We were doing more and more panel work and realised that the BHX 055 would be good for small panels whilst the Vantage

100 flatbed machine would handle bigger panels faster and to a much higher standard. “Although we were offered a finance package from HOMAG, we decided to buy the equipment outright. Probably the biggest factor in our purchasing decision was the total integration of all the machines. Even though the machines come from different companies within the Group, they all run off software that is compatible making life much easier for our operators. We run woodWOP, MagiCut and a nesting package which are easy to use and help improve efficiencies within the business.”

quantity of panels that have hundreds of holes in them and with the old CNC it was taking eight hours a panel to process. With the WEEKE Vantage 100, however, we have halved that time to just four hours, delivering an impressive 100% improvement. “The speed of the machine, however, does not compromise the quality which is much better than we could achieve with our previous set up. With the Vantage 100 we gain all round; it is simple for the team in the office to programme jobs and also easy for the machine operators to produce the necessary work.”

Versatile, accurate and fast “The WEEKE Vantage 100 is fantastic; it has a 3-axis head which gives us more versatility combined with speed and accuracy. We can do a lot more with it compared to the previous CNC and we are looking forward to attracting new business with these added capabilities. Given all this, we are expecting the machine to pay for itself within three years. “One big benefit the Vantage 100 has

given us is a competitive edge when it comes to turn round times. These days, the market is very sensitive to delivery times; customers want work on site very quickly after ordering and the new CNC enables us to minimise production times and get high quality jobs to site fast. “Another significant gain has been thanks to the vacuum system which allows us to cut right through the boards. Previously, we could not cut completely through the board; this meant we had to hand trim out each part when it came off the machine. With the Vantage that additional work is a thing of the past, the parts come off the machine and do not require any trimming. ”

“Previously the carcasses were constructed by hand with biscuit joints but now they are drilled on the WEEKE and doweled which saves us at least 50% in terms of production time. In addition, it gives us a better quality finished product which is great. “Overall, we are delighted with the investments we have made in HOMAG Group equipment and we are looking forward to continuing our close working relationship with HOMAG UK in the years ahead, ” concludes Ian Silk.

INSTALLATION CEHISA Edgebander for Simply Wood The installation of a new CEHISA Compact PCS Edgebander was the final piece in Simply Wood’s panel processing workshop upgrade, joining the recently commissioned Maggi 636 Borer and Altendorf F45 panel saw, all supplied by Daltons Wadkin. Simply Wood was founded by Wayne Geater and originally had great success in general joinery and bespoke cabinet making. In recent years, as the demand for solid wood products dropped away, the focus has moved to panel processing. ‘We operate all over the country supplying to the trade mostly. We don’t advertise or actively promote our services with all business coming from referrals. It is our ability to offer high quality products with very quick delivery times that gives us the edge’, comments Wayne. ‘Our old hot air edgebander serviced us well, but with advances in edging and panel technology I wanted to make sure we could continue to deliver the highest possible standards. As with all my machine

purchases I took some time researching the market before committing to the CEHISA. The machine needed to be compact, capable and flexible. I knew CEHISA by reputation and when I saw the machine demonstrated at Daltons Wadkin it was a clear favourite’. The Compact PCS forms part of the impressive range of edgebanders from Spanish manufacturer CEHISA. At its core the COMPACT offers edging application from 0.4-3mm, and 5mm solid lippings on panels up to 50mm thick. Building on the standard specification further options for pre-milling, corning rounding, scraping and buffing can all be tailored to customers’ requirements. Increasingly popular is the DUO-MELT glue unit, designed for quick switch over between EVA and PUR adhesives. The new ‘laser-edge’ glueless edging application system can be added to the COMPACT model and above for a perfect finish. CEHISA have been designing and developing edgebander technology for

almost 50 years and are currently experiencing there biggest year yet with an explosion in sales across the world and are set to hit 1000 machines for 2016. Joseph Kim from the design team of Korean giant, LG Hausys, explains the latest trend: “It focuses on things that complement each other: natural things, colours like soil, faded peach, beige, grey colours that can easily take on other natural, richer colours like sky blue and grey. The industry is stepping away from vivid single tones. Instead, the key is colour gradations that bring the outside in.” LG Hausys' latest collections can be found on the David Clouting stand. Earthy hues, soft pastel shades and coordinated unicolours fit perfectly and with the announcement that Rose Quartz and Serenity have been crowned ‘Colours of the Year 2016’ by the Pantone Colour Institute, designers are flocking to insightful décor producers and edging

Passionate About Veneer In June this year PJP, together with other woodworking and interior design journalists, were invited by James Latham plc to Decospan in Menen, Belgium a European market leader in the production of natural wood veneer. They were accompanied by Miles Kember Depot Director of James Latham. Established in 1978 by Urbain Desmet, Decospan produce a number of innovative brands as well as their cutting and finishing service which enables the veneer and/or veneered products to have a consistent colour. This is a result of their controlled methodology and advanced technique. Decospan is a family owned company and the management team is headed up by third generation, Pieterjan Desmet Sales and Marketing Director and Corneel Reynaert, Wood Consultant. James Latham have established a strong relationship with Decospan over the years, stocking their many veneer designs and working with them in partnership to bring their products to the UK. Decospan have manufacturing plants in Belgium, France and Croatia and are in the process of extending their production to an area adjacent to their Menen site at a cost of 30 million Euros to accommodate future developments. The trees supplied to Decospan are FSC, meaning they are sourced from responsible, sustainable management suppliers who have signed up to their Pure Wood Charter. The company is very aware of sustainable energy with 30% of the factory power being generated by solar panels installed at their production sites. The remaining 70% is green energy purchased from energy suppliers. In addition Decospan have invested in wind energy – the two wind

turbines in the industrial areas are a source of sustainable energy. The lighting for the storage facility which houses racking for 17 million Euros worth of veneers comes on by sensors when someone enter the aisle and then automatically switch off when not required. A certain amount of veneer sourced from exotic areas of the world – areas where species of tropical timber which may have an export ban. This has not been a problem for Decospan as they have the expertise and facilities to copy the design, texture and colour of these trees which they market as ‘Look Likes’. The formula is a closely guarded company secret! The Decospan “Tree House” was opened in September 2015. It is a marketing suite with 27 of the most popular wood types on display. A catalogue is available which includes an overview of all wood types and in addition Decospan have developed a veneer bible with A4 size samples of all 165 types of wood. David Clouting at the Gherkin In a world with a constantly changing landscape, it is time to apply today's technologies for tomorrow's society. Everything about ourselves today is different to that of ourselves 50 years ago, and yet we still build using the same 50 year old materials. We are all becoming more savvy on our social responsibility and good design. On Thursday 21st April David Clouting to support this movement, held a design and innovation seminar for Interior Film and Deco Foil on the two top floors of the Gherkin, by flying over one of the top designers for LG Hausys to share his inspirations and vision! The audience was a mixture of some of the best architectural practices, interior designers and fitout companies in London. These events are successful at triggering the thought process through the whole design team, architect, contractor and end user staff etc to a more collaborative approach to occupied space! We spoke of new organic textures inspired by Nature, and how refacing in place of replacing can suit all expectations of finish, seeing the revival of PVC demonstrating new technologies for Super Matt and Gloss with finger free finishes, not forgetting airfree self adhesive systems. The event was a huge success and the credit goes to the attendees of whom without their commitment to their careers wouldn't be possible. Some of the feedback is reported below!

Finsa Launch New Decors Range for 2016-2018 Representatives from FINSA UK along with customers travelled to Madrid to attend an event to mark the official launch of the 23 new decors The new additions to the GAMA DUO range consist of a carefully designed and selected variety of fresh new colours and textures. AXYZ Router Sets The Scene at Specialist Builder An AXYZ 6000 series router, supplied by AXYZ International, is said to have made a significant contribution to the continuing success of Kent-based All Scene All Props. Established in 2002 by founding partners Danny Hayter and Piers Ross, the company’s primary business is the provision of scenery and props for theatre and related performing arts venues that are renowned for their outstanding quality and ingenuity. These specialist building constructions have been used for many of the best known and most popular productions staged at prestigious theatre locations such as The National, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and The Palladium in London and the Minerva in Chichester. Operating from a 25,000 square feet workshop near Tunbridge Wells, All Scene All Props offers a full range of services, from initial design concepts, materials specification, in-house construction and onsite installation, with the ability to handle all kinds of project regardless of size or complexity. The comprehensive in-house production facility includes specialist carpentry, engineering and scenic arts sections, together with a full-scale space to enable every project to be pre-built prior to delivery. The AXYZ router now installed at the

company is a single-head AXYZ 6012 model with a bed size of 2.1m (width) x 3.6m (length). It includes a seven-station ATC (Automatic Tool Change) facility to help speed up production and accommodate different tooling requirements. As managing partner Piers Ross explained: “Purchase of the AXYZ 6012 CNC router was facilitated by the generous trade-in discount offer made by AXYZ International that enabled us to partexchange our old AXYZ 4008 router for this new and higher-performance model. This has resulted in significantly increased production levels and faster turnaround on the work we undertake.” The router is used to process a wide range of disparate materials used in stage and related constructions. These include hardwood, plywood, medium-density fibreboard (MDF), aluminium composite materials (ACM), aluminium, acrylic and plastic sheets, polyurethane foamed boards and high-impact laminates. Piers Ross added: “We use the router for virtually everything we need to process. INSTALLATION Kimla CNC Router for Redco Norwich based REDCO is a specialist manufacturer and supplier of machined plastic materials. Established in 1981, the company has been meeting the demands of its increasing customer base with continual investment in its machine shop technology. The latest addition to the impressive lineup of CNC lathes and milling machines is the Kimla BPF2131 CNC router. SOFTWARE Complex 5-Axis Programming Made Easy With Alphacam A shopfitting company has doubled the output on its CNC router, driven by Alphacam, in the last two years. The Wensley Group provides a bespoke design, manufacturing and installation service to the retail, leisure, education and healthcare sectors, manufacturing shop counters, pub bars and back fittings, staircases, doors and windows. While Alphacam CAD/CAM software plays a part in the design and production process for around 95 per cent of their jobs, CNC programmer Mark Greening says it really comes into its own on 5-axis staircase work. “Even straightforward staircases can be quite complex on the CNC machine, but the bigger and more complex-shaped ones with features such as curves, tangents and scrolls, would be almost impossible without Alphacam. “If the shop floor were to make even a simple, straight flight of stairs manually, it would take between three and four days. Using Alphacam I can do it in half a day.” When he joined the West Midlands company around two years ago, neither their Alphacam Ultimate nor the 5-axis 36-tool Reichenbacher CNC router which it drives, were being deployed effectively. “I invested time in developing how we used the machine and getting the tooling right. We’re still improving on that, but Alphacam gives us the confidence to try anything on it.” Five-axis work is becoming increasingly important, and he says the complexity of the shapes and curved handrails that he produces with Alphacam has surprised a number of people at the company. “Some of the designs we’re asked to work with are virtually impossible to make any other way.

“Everything I do goes through Alphacam, starting with designing the products, through to them coming off the router.” He utilises many of Alphacam’s extensive CAD features, from a very basic aspect of drawing a line, to creating a surface. “When I’ve finished the design I move on to programming with the CAM operation. We work with a selection of tools, and because everything’s done onscreen I can run a simulation to see what works and what doesn’t, before we come to the machining stage. Alphacam shows us if the product we want to cut is fully machineable. “We can receive the work as a copy of a drawing which I then redraw in Alphacam, or the client may send a full architectural drawing where I simply break it down into the components and program them in Alphacam, or I may be asked to draw something entirely from scratch based on the client’s idea.” Even after the program has been sent to the machine there may be occasions when it needs to be amended. “All we do is switch the toolpaths off and change the lines were necessary without having to redraw or reprogram it.” He says many of their staircases have handrails that are twisted as well as curved, which are readily produced in Alphacam using polylines, splines and surfaces. “A lot of them need to be drawn almost freehand to produce what’s needed for the machining, and it would be quite difficult to do using a solid model package.” Retail contracts often call for a complete shopfitting service involving counters, point-of-sale stands and window displays...and with pub refurbishments requiring bars and the

full back-fitting, Wensley Group use a wide range of materials, including ply, MDF, hardwoods, softwoods, Tricoya panels and Corian. Mark Greening prefers to go on-site to personally measure up, ensuring his Alphacam drawings are accurate first time. “If I’m given a full architectural drawing instead, I’ll break it down in to all its component parts – tops, fronts, sides – right down to the skirtings, so every component goes on to the Alphacam drawing, ready for programming with the toolpaths.” As their work is almost entirely bespoke he is constantly called upon to produce different jobs, all with different components, so he says each job has its own unique challenge. “But being able to draw it in Alphacam and get everything right on screen first is absolutely invaluable. The software is now an integral part of our production process.” Always using the most up-to-date Alphacam release keeps them at the forefront of CAD/CAM technology, which he says is vital to get the best out of the Reichenbacher router. And on the rare occasion they need guidance on an issue the Alphacam support team are always quick to resolve it. “One piece of 5-axis code wouldn’t work on the machine, so I sent the program to Alphacam through their support portal and they altered our post processor. SOFTWARE Technology Sharing Brings Users Together at Alphacam’s UK User Group Meetings Alphacam, the intelligent and intuitive CAD/CAM software for the Woodworking, Metal and Stone cutting industries, held two successful User Group Meetings, showcasing the latest 2016 R2 release of the software; bringing together users from various industries. Taking place at two venues including the Coventry Manufacturing Technology Centre and the Clarion hotel in Dublin, the meetings were focused around Alphacam’s latest technology, enhancements and functionality. Michael Pettit, Alphacam’s EMEA Sales Manager, reports that many customers who attended the events, were very impressed with the number of major technological upgrades that improve the range of Alphacam functions. He says: “Events like these are a great opportunity for us to show the users the new technology and also what’s coming down the line in the software. It’s nice to take them out of their normal work-ing environment, and not

only have a look at what the new functions are but how they would be used in the real world”. The latest release of the software, Alphacam 2016 R2, was on show which included a number of new and enhanced items providing improvements with automation, ma-chining and feature extraction. Alphacam 2016 R2 also contains a range of general improvements, along with new user interface commands for faster and simpler ways of working. Leading German Kitchen Manufacturer Switches To 2020 Insight Since early May, German kitchen manufacturer, Hummel Küchenwerk, has been con-trolling its entire kitchen production with the 2020 Insight software solution. From graph-ical quote generation to installation planning with subcontractors, all processes are mapped and processed in 2020 Insight. “We opted for 2020 Insight,” says Hummel MD, Matthias Flick, “because it is the only product on the market, as far as we know, that provides continuity in production control.” The graphical quote generation facilitates the planning of all types of kitchens which is an important factor for the North German market leader in the B2B sector as they supply many developers and home building organisations with their products. “In addition to a wide range of variants we also repeatedly receive special or bespoke requests,” Flick continues. This high variability must also be taken into account in the secondary processes. Sven Heinrich, Head of Projects at Hummel explains: “Due to the large number of variants we offer customers, our software requirements were very high. 2020 Insight gave us the option to develop and implement visual workflows which

enabled us to respond to all requirements. The flexibility of the solution and the tools provided allowed us to adapt the system so that it fully meets our needs.” With the continuous support and advice from two 2020 employees throughout the whole project, the first complete kitchen was produced in February as a test run. Cor-rection requests and improvement ideas were developed and implemented as soon as possible in the software solution. “That way we could ensure a smooth transition from the old to the new control system,” says Sven Heinrich. Project colleague, Thorsten Schmidt, adds: “It was also important to us that all transi-tions between the different departments were clearly defined and that no unnecessary disruptions occurred. SAWS The HOLZMA HPS 320 Flextec – A Fully Automated Beam Saw Specifically Designed To Process Single Panels Launched at LIGNA 2015, the HOLZMA HPS 320 flexTec is a world first – a unique robotic beam saw specifically designed for the processing of single panels. This new cutting cell completely redefines low batch production and single part flow, with fully automated processes and unlimited recuts. “For batch size 1 production to work efficiently,” explains Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s sales and marketing director, “it is important to group as many parts of an order as possible in one cutting pattern. of manual work involved. Parts requiring recuts have to be temporarily stored by hand and then manually returned to the saw. As a result, error rates increase and overall production costs rise.”

Unlimited recuts handled automatically The new HPS 320 flexTec, however, is a real game changer. A user-friendly and easy to maintain cutting cell, it can be connected to an automatic horizontal storage system from HOMAG Automation or integrated into an industrial production line. Its intelligent modular design enables cutting lines to be configured according to customer specifications and customised in terms of both part flow and output. Simon Brooks again, “The core component of the HPS 320 flexTec is an industrial robot with a specially developed suction traverse. This ingenious robot looks after the entire handling of panels, parts

and strips until all the recuts have been completed. “After the first rip cut, the robot lifts the strip, rotates it to the correct position for the cross cut and then places the strip on a purpose-designed side machine table, known as a strip buffer. This strip buffer which is controlled by software, feeds the strip back to the rear machine table. Here, the strip is automatically aligned and positioned over the cutting line by the clamps. “If a recut is needed, the robot places the part on the rear machine table or temporarily stores it, depending on the cutting pattern, on a buffer area above the pressure beam. This makes it possible to complete unlimited recuts automatically, without errors. “Finally, the robot collects the finished part from the front machine table and places it, correctly rotated for the next machining station, on the outfeed conveyor.

A full working demonstration was arranged at the Daltons Wadkin Nottingham showroom so that Mercia could see a Salvador machine put through its paces. There are a number of alternative configurations available and after examining these with Andy the model chosen was a Salvador Superpush 250 Optimising Saw with twin aligners, 6200 mm infeed pusher, 150 mm cutting depth and a chain side loading system. This allows the machine to run continuously with minimum effort from the operator (bar loading the timber onto the feed chains). There is also an automatic outfeed ejection system synchronised with the cutting cycle, ensuring no loss of time when cutting.

The waste trap door activates rapidly with the off-cuts dropping onto a waste conveyor. The new machine has been installed and running at Mercia’s headquarters in Suttonon-Trent for some months now and is revolutionising their manufacturing process. The machine has increased Mercia’s throughput and accuracy – the S250 being PC controlled provides full cut information for each shift and Malcolm Marriott (Operations Director) can see at a glance the impressive performance provided by his new investment. Mercia have cut six million metres of shiplap, cladding and framing in the first 12 months since the machine was installed and on one occasion recorded 37,000 metres in one day! Striebig Demonstrates the Art of Sawing at University The University of Northampton is the latest in a growing roster of educational establishments to benefit from the introduction of a Striebig vertical panel saw. Its wood shop within the School of The Arts recently installed a Striebig entry-level Compact 4164 and staff are delighted with the numerous improvements it’s delivering. Richard Hawkes, the technical demonstrator for Woods, spends a lot of his time sizing sheet material into components wanted by students for their creations. This covers a variety of wood-based panels - mainly plywood, MDF and chipboard - as well as acrylics and the occasional sheet of Perspex. “We used a small table saw for panel cutting before but it was not the easiest way to do things,” he said. “The panels, measuring 8ft x 4ft or 10ft x 5ft, needed a great deal of manhandling to push them through the saw blade. Now it’s a simple job to place a panel onto the Striebig, which avoids a great deal of bending and back twisting.” As well as the important health and safety benefits of reduced manual handling, Richard Hawkes said the other main advantages of the Compact over the table saw were its accuracy and ease-of-use. “The accuracy is brilliant,” he said. “The Striebig gives us a much cleaner and smoother cut every time, which shows in the students’ finished work when compared with components cut on the table saw.

“It’s also extremely quick to set up and easy and safe to operate, so I really can’t fault it. The day it was commissioned I had a lesson from the machine’s installer and was perfectly happy to begin using it right after he had gone. I had a big smile on my face that day.” With a cutting range of 3100 x 1644mm (10 ft x 5 ft) and a maximum depth of cut of 60mm, the Compact 4164 guarantees impressive dust limit values of well below 1mg/m3. Richard Hawkes said the strip cutter supplied as an option with the saw was ideal for making fast and accurate repeat cuts when small pieces needed to be sized. As an example of the time saving being achieved, he recently had to cut 88 8ft x 4ft sheets of MDF into 8ft long narrow lengths for a student’s installation. “We stacked the sheets five at a time on the Striebig,” he said. “I reckon that doing the job on the table saw would have taken about five times as long. With sawing speeded up like this, I can now spend far more time with students to talk about their requirements.” Due to its versatility the saw is also in demand to size sheet materials for students taking Architecture and Product Design courses. The decision to buy the Compact was made by Dr Richard Hollinshead, senior lecturer, Sculpture and Spatial Practice, who has had extensive experience of using a Striebig at

other educational establishments. “I knew how good they are and was perfectly happy to specify one for our Wood Shop,” he said. Models in the nine-strong Compact series offer a cutting range from 3100 x 1644 x 80mm to 5350 x 2200mm. There’s even an automated cut cycle version, the Compact AV, which makes them even more productive. All Compact machines are based on a single, fully welded sawing frame to give decades of reliable service whilst maintaining cutting precision. They can be wall-mounted or freestanding and can cut practically all wood-based sheet materials as well as timber, plaster board, plastics, composites and aluminium panels. The purchase was part of an investment programme in new equipment prior to the School of The Arts moving into the university’s new £330m Waterside Campus, which is due to open in 2018. SANDERS London Furniture Designer & Manufacturer Go For a Kündig Michael Northcroft is a British furniture designer and maker with an international reputation for excellence. All the furniture is made at the extensive London factory and showrooms located near London's Olympic Park. Founded by managing director, Michael Northcroft, in 1982, the company has built up an impressive exclusive client list who, like Michael himself, demand the very best. To achieve this, Michael invests in machinery: along with a brand new saw and a brand new edgebander, he has invested in a Kündig Brilliant-2 1600 REd sander, purchased from Kündig Ltd's authorised agent, A12 Machinery of Essex. “I use Albert [Holland of A12] because he has the right machines,” Michael said. “The former sander was past its sell by date. It was also only 1,100 mm wide, and we needed a larger sander because we are making increasingly larger high end furniture to fit the space in our clients' homes.” The Kündig sander is 1,600 mm wide. Michael had a short list of two manufacturers: the Kündig won out on a number of points. “ The machine has an excellent reputation. And I am more used to working with a Kündig: we had one many years ago which was a lovely, simple, heavily built machine, so I had a predisposition to Kündig at the beginning. “There is a certain logic to the design. If someone gets the concept right and thinks about it at the early stage, you get a better product. You can tell that Kündig has been through that process repeatedly over the decades. The sander has its own computer, so our operators don't have to get into the intricacies: things are preset. They only need to worry about how much to remove, at what speed, with which belts and how many heads. “The Kündig is an expensive beast, but you do get a high quality job out of it. “We make very high quality furniture. Our client base includes many international stars, performers, sports people around the world so we need high quality sanding. The furniture is tailored to their homes and the quality has to be really good. We also use a lot of exotic veneers and woods in our furniture. The Kündig minimises ripples and defects in high class lacquers. “We also sand our solid wood components on it. A multitude of solid wood components go into our furniture. The Kündig is highly accurate: you get the dimension out that you set the machine to. There is no burning, you get a very clear

finish and it is wonderfully trouble free. “We produce quality from the log to the finished furniture, so we need the very best in terms of machinery to minimise the rejection rate. It is inefficient to have to send things back to the cabinet makers: and the Kündig sander has removed pretty much all of that agro. “The machine is quiet: you don't have to wear ear defenders! If you can create a quiet, dust free machine shop, with natural daylight, that is lovely for the guys. Some processes are inherently noisy so ear defenders are required, but it is better for the men if it is possible to work without them. “It is a really good machine, I am really pleased with it. I would not recommend it if you have a really tight budget, but if you need a really high quality machine that is hassle free, the Kündig is excellent and yes, I would recommend it. “It is also a really easy machine to use. It is nice and wide, and can sand components 1.5 m wide. It has a much higher quality finish: there are no unsanded pieces. The Kündig sands the whole surface in one pass, and it has never sanded through the workpiece. We are also reassured because we have known the chap who services the sander for a long time, not that we have had any issues in terms of maintenance. “Buying the best quality machines works out cheaper in the long run, if you look after it. DCS Extraction Delivers On New Pallet Line Leading dust extraction engineers, Dust Control Systems (DCS), have recently installed a new energy-efficient dust extraction system for specialist pallet manufacturer, Industrial Pallet & Transport Services (IPTS). Based on a three-acre manufacturing site at Ferrybridge, Yorkshire, the family-owned and operated firm is a major producer of new and refurbished pallets. Run by husband and wife Nick and Lee Bennett, IPTS produces around 20,000 pallets per week with large quantities of pallets always held in stock. Over 500 cubic metres of FSC certified, home grown British timber goes into producing their high quality pallets every week, and the firm holds the coveted international ISPM 15 quality standard for production of heat treated pallets. “Recent investment in a new automated pallet manufacturing line meant we had outgrown our existing extraction plant,” explains managing director Nick Bennett. "DCS had supplied us with dust plant in the past and we brought them in to discuss our changing needs. This system would satisfy our extraction needs and cut electricity bills by providing the optimum amount of power to meet demand.” For the contract, DCS installed an externally-sited NFSZ modular unit, fitted with high-performance ‘Superbag’ polyester filter bags. It has an airflow capacity of 14,500m3/hr and is capable of efficiently coping with varying loads of wood dust and chips. Incorporated into the main ducting system is an ATEX-approved CARZ backpressure flap valve which prevents the effects of a dust explosion from travelling back along ductwork. The compact filter plant is fitted with a rotary valve which discharges waste ‘pressure-free’ into a closed loop conveying system that transfers the waste directly into a box cart. Additionally, an emergency bulk bag discharge system is included. Energy saving measures involved the installation of an integrated ECOGATE greenBOX12 controller, in conjunction with an ECOGATE PowerMaster variable speed drive, which automatically adjusts the speed of the main extraction fan as machines come on line or shut down – resulting in significant power savings over a traditional fixed-speed system. The result is a highly-efficient dust extraction system, which provides precise extraction volumes only when needed. It is expected that the
