EVENTS HOMAG UK’s May Open House Spotlights The Latest Advances in CNC Machinery A wide range of entry level and volume producing CNC machinery will be amongst a host of technologically advanced equipment demonstrated by HOMAG UK at its two day Open House, running from May 11th – 12th at its Castle Donington showroom. A wide range of machinery will be demonstrated and product specialists will be available throughout to discuss and advise visitors. The equipment on show will vary from affordable entry level models to higher end products. Software experts will also be presenting the user-friendly systems including the latest versions of woodCAD/CAM, woodWOP plus software for nesting and solid wood processing. These easy to use programs improve both production performance and the manufacturing efficiency. “CNC machinery and technology have advanced hugely over recent years, which is fantastic news for our customers as they can now invest in HOMAG machines more cost effectively” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK. He continues, “We’ve worked hard to ensure that our machines stay at the top of the table in terms of both quality and technology.

Our first Open House of the year is an exciting platform to showcase the advances we have made with our CNC machines. This equipment significantly increases productivity and is testament to our continual pursuit to develop the very latest technology.”

Live demonstrations At the Open House there will be demonstrations of a variety of machines, ranging from the best-selling compact WEEKE BHX 050 machining centre to the higher end specification WEEKE Vantage 100/710 nesting router. With over 3000 sold, the WEEKE BHX 050 is one of the most popular drilling and routing CNCs in the UK market. It can process panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm up to panels sized 2500 x 850 x 60mm. However, there is also an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. The WEEKE BHX 055 is the 050’s big brother and will also be demonstrated at the Open House. It was the success of the BHX 050 that prompted WEEKE to develop a higher specified version, the BHX 055. This powerhouse has all the benefits of the original 050 but includes automatic adjustment of

work piece thickness, a maximum working length up to 3050mm and 13 vertical spindles as standard. The WEEKE BHX 200 marks the next generation of powerful CNC drilling and routing machinery. It boasts considerably faster machining speeds than the 50 or the 55, yet still maintains the same high levels of precision, despite its small size. The machine can be equipped with two individually moveable high-speed drilling heads which activate a total of 36 high-speed drilling spindles enabling, for example, rows of holes to be processed considerably faster. Two WEEKE nesting machines will be demonstrated, the 100/710 and the 43M. The WEEKE Vantage 43M is a gantry style CNC machine which ensures the highest precision over the entire working width. It has a 10ft x 4ft matrix table with the gantry travelling at a vector speed X/Y of 80m/minute, making it very fast and efficient. This machine is perfect for nesting and general machining as it comes as standard with a powerful four axis controlled router head, an impressive toolchanger capacity and a large drill block with vertical and horizontal

drills, as well as an X and Y direction grooving saw. The WEEKE Vantage 100/710 on display at the open house is for jumbo sheet nesting. It is equipped with an infeed lift table, push off and table sweep system, and an outfeed conveyor belt to provide fully a fully automatic throughfeed nesting cell. It comes with a powerful 12HP (9kW) HSK routing spindle as standard (optionally upgradeable to 16HP [12kW]) and a vertical drill block with automatic toolchanger for fast, versatile and efficient conversion of raw boards into fully machined components. Another powerful WEEKE workhorse being showcased at the Open House is the ABD 260 drilling and dowel inserting machine. This machine can be used on its own or to compliment the nesting models where horizontal drilling and dowelling is required. It delivers controlled and clear-cut results through the use of a vibrating hopper, fed from the top of the machine. Controlled with HOMAG’s user friendly woodWOP software, the ABD260 can cope with one off components as easily as high production runs. The machine drills, glues and inserts dowels horizontally at a rapid

rate and can also drill vertically lending itself nicely to ‘knock down’ products.

CNCs for solid wood processing The WEEKE BMG 211/32/12/K four axis CNC processing centre is particularly impressive thanks to its high configuration. It is ideal for machining components such as doors, door frames, solid wood components and complex furniture parts. The machine comes with HOMAG’s tubeless vacuum clamping system as standard. This means work pieces can be securely held with a mix of vacuum pods and clamps to cope with even the most complex components. Also, it is very easy to change from job to job with minimal downtime. Last but not least will be the HOMAG BMG 311/42/F/K. It is part of a range of heavy duty gantry processing centres which provides state-of-the-art CNC solutions for furniture, window, door and stair manufacturers. This five axis machine has an impressive specification including HOMAG’s LED positioning system for fast, accurate adjustment of the vacuum pods and rails, a heavy duty 5-axis router head and a large drill block for drilling vertically and horizontally. The BMG 311 will be

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

producing various 5-axis machined work pieces throughout the event demonstrating its complete versatility. With programming software now recognised as perhaps more important than the machine itself, HOMAG UK will be demonstrating its array of software systems for nesting, solid wood processing, furniture design and production. “If you’re considering investing in CNC technology, this Open House is a must,” enthuses Simon Brooks. He continues, “To enable customers to afford brand new equipment, our HOMAG Finance team will be available throughout the Open House to give advice on investment plans and provide solutions tailored to individual needs. Cash flow is crucial in order for a business to thrive, but there’s no reason to let it impede expansion plans,” concludes Brooks. CASE STUDY WEEKE Compact BHX CNC Drilling Centres Range Pack A Powerful Punch The WEEKE BHX range of compact CNC drilling centres includes three vertical processing centres – the BHX 050, 055 and 200 models – and a gantry processing centre, the BHX 500. For their size, all the machines punch well above their weight and have proved to be highly productive and reliable machines. Launched in 2009, the WEEKE BHX 050 set the ball rolling. It was an instant success and has been incredibly popular with total BHX machine sales of over 3000. It caught the imagination of the market because not only does this state-of-the-art drilling and routing CNC centre have an incredibly small footprint and an equally trim price tag, but it can also match the rapid processing times of much larger machines. With these credentials, it’s no surprise it soon became the benchmark as the ideal drilling solution for all businesses whether small, medium or large. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK comments, “Since its introduction, sales of the BHX 050 have

consistently out-performed expectations. With over 3000 BHX machines sold, the market has clearly given it its seal of approval. And, when you see what this machine is capable of, you begin to understand why it has become the favourite CNC machining centre, particularly for kitchen, bedroom or office furniture manufacturers.” The BHX 050 is a reliable 3-axis processing centre which can drill on five sides and is capable of grooving and routing at fast throughput rates whilst, at the same time, keeping energy bills down due to its low energy consumption. This versatile workhorse is capable of processing panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm up to panels as big as 2500 x 850 x 60mm as standard. There is also an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. Simon continues, “The BHX 050 can process any type of wood panel and is most commonly used for MFC and MDF. We have had situations, however, where even demanding materials such as Trespa and

solid wood components are being handled by this robust machine.”

A real time-saver that offers true value “Once the programming has been done, the set-up takes just seconds; it only requires the push of a pedal and press of a button to get it started. A really productive feature on the BHX 050 is the panel holding system. There are no vacuum pods or beam positions to think about, the machine automatically positions the panel clamp correctly to suit each panel. “The BHX 050 is great for one-off production due to its immense flexibility and we have many customers using the machine for make to order ‘cabinet by cabinet’ production. All the operator has to do is load the parts – it’s simple and efficient.”

competition. It is so much quicker than anything else; we use it for mass production rather than bespoke pieces, as we can drill pairs of carcase end panels at the same time. “The BHX 500 guarantees that when drilling pairs of panels they are perfectly matched which is vitally important to ensure we achieve squared up carcases every time. Although the machine can be used for routing shaped parts, we focus its use on drilling and shallow grooving (5 7mm deep) as this gives us the best productivity for our processes. “It has been a real workhorse for us. We have never had any major issues with the machine and it has paid for itself several times over,” concludes Russell.

Control and consistent drilling accuracy Two CNC-controlled clamping devices ensure permanently firm and precise positioning of the work pieces, regardless of the speed. Even a work piece thickness of up to 80 mm (2 x 40 mm) is easy to handle. Thickness control and length measuring ensure safe process cycles whilst the patented spindle clamping provides a permanently exact drilling depth for all drilling operations. The closed straight guiding system is protected against dust and dirt and is therefore very durable. The machine also features a Smooth-Pressure System© which provides a protective air cushion below the work piece, ensuring high-quality work piece handling. “WEEKE’s BHX range continues to be incredibly popular and our flexible finance solutions put this versatile CNC technology within the reach of customers at all levels of business. Those wishing to arrange a demonstration of any of the WEEKE BHX range can call Karen Payen at HOMAG UK on 01332 856500,” concludes Simon Brooks.

They offer a choice of three machine options, ranging from the 4008 with a processing area of 1524 x 2438mm to the top-of-the-range 6010 with a processing area of 2159 x 3048mm. All of the routers are built on a single-piece and stress-relieved heavy-duty steel frame incorporating a fully-zoned aluminium vacuum bed with either manual or automatic switching. The steel gantry runs on high-quality linear bearings and is driven on both sides of the router by servomotors coupled via planetary gearboxes together with the latest helical rack and pinion drive system. Mindful of how important

selection of the correct tooling is to the performance of a chosen router for specific applications, AXYZ International also offers the 24/7 online CNCRoutershop facility. This recently expanded technical support facility provides a wide range of tooling options, including collets and cones, special-purpose routing/engraving tools, oscillating and tangential knifecutting blades, accessories, software and spare parts, all of which are compatible not only with AXYZ and Pacer routers but also virtually any other make of machine regardless of type or country of origin. Lending further support to this facility are wall charts and product literature to assist tooling specification and to determine the correct cutting speeds for different materials and breakdown cover and on-site training for AXYZ International machine owners. This can be carried out either at the customer’s own premises or at the new facility in Telford where selected machine options can be viewed and demonstrated.

STORAGE

Discover why automated storage solutions provide the perfect foundations for efficient production If your business uses large flat panels which are processed to produce furniture for kitchens, bedrooms, offices and the like, you understand the challenges of storing, tracking and handling these unwieldy boards. They are the cornerstone of your business, but the storage, retrieval and handling of them is no easy matter. “Whether you’re cutting 20 panels a day or 20 per hour, the storage and handling of these panels is critical to the success of your business,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at HOMAG UK. He continues, “Keeping track of exactly what boards you have in stock, the volumes you are using and the space required to store them is hard enough, but ensuring you deliver the right quantity of the right board to the required machine at precisely the right moment it is needed, adds another level of complexity to the challenge. On top of this, there are the health and safety issues for your staff of handling large, heavy boards and the financial losses due to damaged boards through mishandling.

Homag’s automated storage solutions – accurate and efficient raw board storage and retrieval

“This is where an automated storage system comes into its own. With over 25 years’ experience and knowledge in designing and producing such systems, the HOMAG Group is ideally placed to provide

the perfect solution for both small and large manufacturers.”

A truly integrated system “Unlike some of the competitive systems in the market, the HOMAG Automation division’s automated storage solutions are totally designed and manufactured inhouse. This enables the storage systems to be fully compatible with other machinery produced by the HOMAG Group. “The HOMAG Automation products are truly intelligent systems which communicate with HOLZMA saws or HOMAG and WEEKE CNC nesting machines to create efficient working cells in your manufacturing process. TLF storage systems can be used in conjunction with a beam saw, with a nesting CNC or, with a combination of both. Alternatively, they can be used as a standalone system to handle stock then create rainbows stacks on demand and distribute them to subsequent processes or to different factories.”

STORAGE

The storage systems communicate with saws and CNC machines to create efficient manufacturing.

Size isn’t important “There is a perception in the market that automated storage systems are expensive and only for the big boys, but that is no longer the case. Even small start-up companies will not only benefit from, but also can afford to invest in an automated storage system. “What’s more, the benefits they bring to a business in terms of efficiencies, cost savings, stock control and safety far outweigh any short-term cash-flow issues which can easily be overcome with backing from our specialist financial team. “The efficiency gains come from many areas, but the main driver is that it is the automated system which governs the output rather than the operator, thus delivering a more controlled and consistent workflow.”

Automated stock control “There is a seamless link from the software to the storage system which provides far more accurate stock control. The system notifies the user when boards and even part-boards have been used. It knows where all the boards, whether full or part-used, are in the system and alerts the user when stocks are running low.

“The system knows which boards are needed at which machines and delivers the correct quantity just in time, so production is optimised. The system can also generate barcode labels so that once the boards are cut into parts, those parts can easily be identified as they progress through the factory. “The very nature of the boards makes handling of them difficult and even when fork lift trucks are used they are unwieldy and very easily damaged. The storage system puts an end to all these problems. “Once the boards have been unloaded off the delivery vehicle and placed in the storage system’s in-bay, the system’s robot takes control lifting the board and storing it in the right location. When required for production, the same robot arm picks the board and delivers it to the in-feed of the machine where it is wanted. “If required, HOMAG Automation can also supply robots that will take the machined parts off the saw or CNC and place them on a conveyor system to be transported to the next work cell. “This means that your workforce are no longer at risk of sustaining injury through mishandling of the large boards, And, from a wastage standpoint, damaged boards are

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

virtually a thing of the past, saving significant sums of money in the production process.”

Advice on which system is best for your business “HOMAG UK is the leading supplier of automated storage systems is in British Isles and the most popular models are the TLF 211 for small to medium sized businesses and the TLF 411 for larger volume manufacturers. The TLF storage systems are surprisingly affordable and have a very short return on investment. “If you are a kitchen, bedroom or office furniture manufacturer and you haven’t already considered an automated storage system, then I would strongly recommend you at least talk to us. You will be amazed at the difference it will make to both your production processes and your bottom line,” concludes Simon Brooks.

A Lesson Learned with BioCote School classrooms present the classic factors important for the efficient spread of microbes; close contact of people for prolonged periods, numerous commonly touched, communal surfaces and isolated cleaning. Hygiene in these environments is therefore important in order to reduce the risk and consequences of microbial cross contamination. Developments in antimicrobial technology now offer the ability to create indoor environments composed of materials that act continuously by reducing the presence of microbes contaminating them. In 2015, Decorative Panels Lamination reported how the world’s first ever antimicrobial classroom saw a huge 96% reduction in bacteria. The study aim was to measure and compare the numbers of bacteria in two classrooms in the same primary school after antimicrobial technology has been extensively applied to one whilst the second is unchanged. Following on from the initial study, working together with BioCote, the antimicrobial classroom and the untreated equivalent have been monitored continually throughout the academic calendar. Our findings continue to show the positive impact antimicrobial surfaces and products have on reducing the levels of bacterial contamination. As predicted, the study continues to show that the treated classroom has less bacteria than its standard counterpart. In contrast, in the untreated classroom, pathogenic bacteria were identified and recovered. These bacteria have the potential to cause sickness which can quickly spread around the classroom and beyond - affecting both pupils and staff. In comparison, the dpBioCote Quartz protected products in the treated classroom did not have any pathogenic bacteria contaminating them. It is clear to most that less contaminated and more hygienic

schools are a pleasant concept, but how can dp-BioCote Quartz protected products really benefit the environment or the people that occupy them – in this instance could it mean a reduction in absenteeism? This would be good news for everyone including staff, parents, and to go even further, perhaps the economy? With regards to absenteeism, we are pleased to report that we found positive results. When absenteeism figures for the two environments are compared, the number of children reported absent due to illness in the dp-BioCote Quartz protected classroom was less, in fact some 20% less. We are still collecting data and the numbers of children absent from the school are continuing to be monitored to give a further understanding of the correlation between the use of dp-BioCote Quartz protected products, less bacterial contamination and a reduction of absenteeism. School absenteeism can have a huge negative effect on the economy, for instance, parents having to take time off work to look after sick children impact many businesses (absence from work costs the UK economy £100 billion a year) and the increased use of supply teachers to replace absent staff not only costs our schools dearly but also reportedly hinders children’s learning. The use of antimicrobial products, such as dp-BioCote Quartz, could transform learning environments and be a breakthrough for the education sector. This could also of course be true of other environments such as offices, shopping centres, health establishments or public transport. Dr. Richard Hastings, leader of the study, comments: “A cleaner, more hygienic learning environment ultimately creates a safer environment for both pupils and teachers. The more hygienic the environment, the less chance of catching an infection or passing it on to others.” We will be continuing this study to monitor the number of children absent from the school classroom, so keep checking our website www.decorativepanels.co.uk/pages/dp-biocote for regular updates.

Always keen to maintain the highest quality, Neville Johnson recently invested in a Kündig Brilliant sander. “The product that we work with now had changed greatly since we bought our original sander,” Neville Johnson's Dave Pearson told PW&SS. “We had had our previous sander for nine years and, at the time we bought it, it did what we needed it to do: at that time we had been working a lot with veneers, particularly oak veneers and more solid timber doors, but the veneers have dropped off quite a bit in our market and MDF has become more prevalent. The previous sander was not able to work with painted MDF: the Kündig system can work both with the MDF and the solid wood. And the oblique sanding system results in a much better finish on the solid timber doors than the previous sander ever did.” The sander puchased by Neville Johnson

was a Kündig Brilliant-3 1350 RedBk system, with the first contact roller for calibration, the second segmental pad for veneers and the third carousel brush unit for sanding into a profiled or routed surface. This combination allows the sander to produce excellent results on the painted MDF, the solid timber doors and the raised and fielded panels in MDF: in other words, on the full range of products manufactured by Neville Johnson, from the most affordable product to the most expensive. Particularly helpful in this regard is the oblique sanding system, which Dave Pearson credits with minimising scratching for example on the cross rails on solid timber doors. This effect is achieved by setting the last sanding head at a slightly different angle to the previous sanding head. While the manufacturer of the sanding belts will take every care to ensure that the belt is delivered to the end user in the best possible condition, tiny flaws that develop over time can result in track lines, known as oscillation marks, being transferred to the workpiece during sanding, in much the same way that damaged rollers can lead to flawed printouts from photocopiers and fax machines. The resulting damage can be expensive both in time and materials, if new pieces need to be manufactured, especially where high-end products are being used.

A sanded surface can, at a microscopic level, resemble a valley full of peaks and troughs. With oblique sanding, the second belt travels in a different direction to the first and is therefore a lot more effective in shearing off the peaks and sanding evenly into the troughs, resulting in a better quality finish. Neville Johnson had investigated the market thoroughly before selecting the Kündig machine, and Dave Pearson described some of the reasons behind the decision: “They came over as a very good price: price was one of the main things we were looking at. It also did what we needed it to do. The quality of the machine was also impressive. We sent samples out to the sander manufacturers, and the samples returned by Kündig were just as good or much better than those sanded on much more expensive machines.” The Kündig sander has brought a number of advantages to Neville Johnson: the ability to work on both MDF and solid wood being a key one, as well as the ability to work to very fine tolerances, and the minimising of scratching that the oblique sander brings. Dave continues, “It is also quite an easy machine to maintain compared to others we have had in the past. It is easy to get to the parts and clean them, and easy to make adjustments: all in all, it is a very user friendly machine. It is also quite a speed machine, which is one of the main things we were looking for.” When asked if he would recommend it, Dave replied, “Definitely!”

PROFILE Easystop from Weinig – The Only Tape Measure You’ll Ever Need EasyStop is the new automatic length stop from Weinig. Used in combination with virtually any machine for cutting, drilling or milling of any material, the automatic length stop provides faster, more comfortable, and more precise processing. For any process that repeatedly requires a tape measure, the EasyStop provides fast, repeatable measurement which is accurate to +/- 0.1 mm. Malcolm Cuthbertson, managing director of Weinig UK said, “Careful measuring is necessary, but if you have an operator doing it regularly, it’s inefficient, slow and expensive in time and, when the measurements aren’t quite right, wasted material. EasyStop is a very simple, precise and easy to use solution that fits with almost any machine to process almost any material.” The OptiCom Assist user interface could not be simpler for set up or use. Absolute position of the positioning stop is actively monitored by the software and extreme loads are compensated by the integrated intelligent drive control; the hydraulic buffer means if you knock the stop the measurement will still be accurate. As the "brains" of the EasyStop, the Opticom Assist user interface is intuitive

INSTALLATION Two More Striebig Saws for Sign Industry Supplier Pyramid Display Materials, the UK’s leading supplier to the sign and display industry, has bought a Striebig Evolution vertical panel saw for its newly-opened depot in Castleford, as well as investing in a second machine to replace a 10-year-old model at its Manchester site. Both saws are used to size a variety of plastic sheet materials including foam PVC, a range of composites, including aluminium, and acrylics. They arrive in sheets of up to 3m x 2m in size and ranging in thickness from 3mm to 10mm, before being converted to the sizes specified by customers. The Swiss-made Striebig Evolution features numerous automated functions making it the most efficient manually operated saw available. The model 5224 model chosen by Pyramid is one of nine different sized versions in the Evolution series. It has a maximum cutting size of 4300 x 2240mm and a maximum depth of cut of 80mm. Featured as standard is Striebig’s user-friendly “touch and saw” operating system which delivers easy and convenient machine control through a touch screen panel that operates all of the machine’s functions. Features that are optional extras in other saws are included as standard. They include a digital measuring system, accurate to 0.1

mm, and an adjustable precision display that can be set to an accuracy of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.1 mm, according to the thickness of the panels being sized. The Evolution has a fully automatic roller locking function, an auxiliary stop section with its own tape measure, three additional auxiliary stops for repeat cuts and small work piece support, and automatic moving backing support. Striebig’s highly effective TRK extraction keeps users well ahead of all European legislation, with the panel support system offering support for the

thinnest of panels. Said Pyramid’s group logistics manager Peter Richardson: “Because we were totally satisfied with the Striebig saw we had been using in Manchester for the last 10 years we had no hesitation in replacing it with the latest version, as well buying one for our new Castleford operation. “It’s been a totally reliable saw which always gives us a perfect quality of cut, which is why we didn’t see the need to look for an alternative. When you know something’s good, why change it?” Striebig’s sole UK supplier T.M. Machinery provided full operating training at both sites as well as supplying a standalone Al-Ko dust extraction unit for use with the Evolution at Castleford. Pyramid Display Materials’ new Yorkshire site brings to four the number of depots operated by the company, which was set-up in 2002 and now employs more than 100 people. A third Striebig saw, a Standard TRK model, is used at the company’s Gateshead depot.

SOFTWARE

Alphacam Gets Postural Care Products to Market Faster Keeping up with the latest releases of Alphacam software, ensures new postural care products for special needs children throughout the Western world, can be brought to market within three months. Working in partnership with individuals, clinicians and carers to create products with a clinical and emotional focus, James Leckey Design have around 20 brands in their portfolio, including Mygo, Squiggles, Comfee Seat and Pal. “We’re constantly developing our range of products, and Alphacam gives us the ability to control our own designs and manufacture them in-house for prototyping and testing,” says Engineering Manager

Wesley Henderson. Operating out of 100,000 square foot premises with a total of 200 employees in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, the company have around 60,000 components on their MRP system for assembling 4,000 individual products in over 30 lines of mobility, standing, sitting and sleeping aids. “They’re designed to assist children and young adults in their daily lives to do things that most of us take for granted. Our users don’t have the physical tone to sit or stand unaided, and our products support them by maintaining good posture.” The products are manufactured from a wide variety of materials, including plastic

injection mouldings, aluminium extrusions, die castings, formed steel and aluminium, wood and plastic. Alphacam is used specifically for cutting woods and plastics on their two SCM CNC routers. “In particular we have a range of seats where the wooden components are cut with Alphacam, but many of our metal products also have some wood or plastic components which are cut on the routers and programmed in Alphacam.” Wesley Henderson heads the manufacturing engineering facility’s team of six, which is part of the overall product development department. High precision of their wood and plastic components is

paramount, as he says many products contain sliding parts which are adjustable to fit individual users, and need to work consistently. They have five seats of Alphacam, and he says it is simple to import 3D geometry from their SolidWorks CAD system and apply the appropriate tools. “Once the piece part is created we nest it and feed it directly to the router where we start the production cuts. “Without Alphacam, one of the main challenges of manufacturing our components on the woodwork routers would be to machine both sides. But Alphacam easily handles reverse side machining, which is invaluable in helping us bring extra features to our products.” He says new employees also produce consistent results extremely quickly on Alphacam, as it is so easy to use. “And keeping up with the twice-yearly releases

every time, is especially important, as there are new and enhanced functions in each update that save us more time and keep productivity high.” In particular, the new Automation Manager in Alphacam 2016 R1 is proving especially useful. With a standard CAD/CAM system each file has to be processed individually by inserting the file, extracting the features, applying tool directions and toolpaths, saving the file and NC code, then generating the required reports. But Alphacam can now take a group, or batch, of files and automate the complete processing of the parts. “This new function means our 2D and 3D CAD files, and solid models from SolidWorks, can be batch processed from file preparation right through to applying toolpaths and generating NC code.” Since James Leckey Design was founded in 1983 the company has grown into a

globally recognised pioneer in the research, design and development of clinically focused, posturally supportive products. Wesley Henderson concludes: “Our R&D process identifies the clinical needs and provides practical solutions while respecting the emotional needs of these youngsters, and with Alphacam we can readily design and produce products to meet those requirements. “Our prototypes combine the clinical and the practical, and give us working examples to trial with clinicians and end users in order to refine and improve the final product.”

SOFTWARE woodCAD|CAM: The HOMAG Group’s Design-to-Machine Software Solution Developed for the furniture and furniture supply industries, the HOMAG Group’s woodCAD|CAM software optimises production processes from initial design concept through to the finished product. This software is specifically configured for HOMAG Group machines to create efficient order processing and production. “The furniture industry is under huge pressure to reduce manufacturing time and costs in order to meet ever tougher market demands,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at HOMAG UK. He continues, “These days we all expect quality products at value for money prices and, in this instant society, long delivery times are just not acceptable. On top of all this, we want to own something which is that little bit different, something more bespoke. It’s not a good feeling to walk into someone else’s house and see exactly the same furniture as we have at home. “These demands dictate that not only do manufacturers have to be extremely flexible and in tune with the market, but they also have to be able to change designs and put them into production quickly, all in the most cost efficient work flow. These drivers were the very inspiration behind HOMAG’s design-tomachine woodCAD |CAM software concept.”

From Design Direct to Machine “This software delivers parametric furniture design in 3D and provides a direct link to the manufacturing machines. This means that whether for standalone furniture or complex room plans, the path from the first concepts to production on the machine is as simple as it is impressive. “Immediately following the design process, production drawings and bills of material can be created at the click of a mouse, with design data automatically forwarded to the saw, edgebander and CNC machines. This ensures perfect integration of production machines into the overall process,” enthuses Simon.

Design in 3D with Customer Visualisations Regardless of whether you are working with dimensionally variable carcass furniture or complex furnishing items, such as counters,

bars or reception desks, assemblies are generated in 3D complete with all their connections, processing operations and hardware. Operation is simple and intuitive with every design change immediately calculated and depicted. When it comes to visualising prototypes, planning and design results are photorealistically depicted so that customers can easily see or visualise how the finished furniture will look. At the same time, woodCAD|CAM creates drawings in a two or three-dimensional view. This includes all cross-sections and details for easy communication with architects and developers.

Total Production Control at the Click of a Mouse The system encompasses an integrated order and project management capability. This means planning and design data is calculated directly with material and production costs which can be read out in various forms, such as a manufacturing cost calculation or a quotation template. The system automatically generates dimensioned component drawings directly from the 3D design. In addition, all the necessary cutting lists, bills of material, bar codes, labels and CNC programmes are automatically generated, saving time and eliminating errors. From here, HOMAG Group machinery such as panel sizing saws, throughfeed machines and CNC processing centres can be

directly actuated with all the necessary parameters such as tool selection, drilling pattern, speed feed rate or approach strategy.

The Competitive Edge “This software gives furniture manufacturers a real edge,” claims Simon. “Not only is it the most efficient way to produce furniture, but it is also the only real alternative if you want to remain competitive. WoodCAD|CAM is an extremely cost effective product and due to its modular design, customers only need purchase the parts relevant to their business. “The HOMAG Group prides itself on its innovation and has recently enhanced the woodCAD|CAM software by adding further modules to it. These modules give it the ability to work with both nesting and five axis machines ensuring that the technology is truly versatile. “Companies that have invested in the woodCAD|CAM software are enjoying a sea change in their production processes as well as a significant uplift in their bottom line. This recent development from Group is really exciting and a superb edition to our already comprehensive range of software solutions for the woodworking and plastics industries,” concludes Simon Brooks. WOODWASTE Wood Waste Technology Heater Installed In New Centre For Innovation In Home-Grown Wood Registered charity, The Sylva Foundation, has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology, for its new Wood Centre in the heart of Oxfordshire. Sylva works across Britain caring for forests, to ensure they thrive for people and for nature. Having been gifted 20 acres of land and several large farm buildings a few years ago, the charity has used this to develop a centre for innovation in home-grown wood, to provide an enterprise hub for new and innovative wood-using businesses. The charity knew it wanted to install a flexible biomass heating solution into the centre. An old 12,000 square foot potato store had been redesigned and rebuilt to support a number of separate small to medium enterprise wood-using businesses, as well as a teaching classroom. The team didn’t want anything too complex in there, as their main aim was to supply tenants of the Wood Centre with warm workshops that would be costeffective to run by being fuelled with waste wood and wood offcuts. A number of possible solutions were evaluated, but the team eventually purchased a WT15 heater from Wood Waste Technology, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers.

Paul Orsi, Director for Forestry & Rural Enterprise at Sylva explains: “Wood Waste Technology gave us the perfect solution to our heating problem. We were struggling to find something that fitted our budget and was easy to use, but that would provide a comfortable environment for our tenants. It was also extremely important to us that it could be run on wood waste. We’re delighted with our purchase and the service we’ve received. It’s been a completely smooth process, from purchase to installation. Whilst the wood waste heater is situated in a central area, the engineers were able to duct the hot air to provide heat into each of the tenant’s individual workshops. The tenants’ love that it provides them with free heating and reduces their waste disposal bills.” Paul continues, “Our wider vision for the Sylva Wood Centre is to develop the whole site – which includes several more buildings and the surrounding landscape. We wouldn’t hesitate in contacting Wood Waste Technology again should we have any further biomass heating needs.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’ve been delighted to be involved in such an exciting and innovative project, and look forward to

seeing how the developments at the Wood Centre continue.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

DUST EXTRACTION Meticulous Planning Pays Dividends for Dustraction at GP Cases When Dave Waldron, MD of GP Cases Ltd. in Wiltshire, began researching new dust extraction for their wooden packaging business to upgrade an old and “rather tired” system at their 20,000 sq. ft. factory in Royal Wootton Bassett, they knew they needed specialist help. They had been running the old, labour-intensive layout for years and towards the end of 2015 wanted to combine a new dust filter and extractor with the installation of a biomass heating system. So Steve Matuska made a number of visits from Dustraction to assess the requirements on a site where dust extraction and waste wood fuel needed to be chipped, integrated and conveyed into a purpose built storage silo to feed the biomass boiler manufactured and supplied by Wood Waste Technology. Heat is generated from wood fuel and used to supply hot water to radiators throughout the factory buildings and offices. “The old extraction system was inefficient and very labour intensive,” says David Waldron. “Filtered waste was discharged into plastic bags which, as they were filled, were taken off outflows manually, the bags replaced and the waste then taken outside to a skip for dumping to landfill. This, together with the disposal of offcuts, represented at least five man-hours per week so the new automatic layout brings a significant reduction in man power that can now be redeployed more productively”. Waste is now converted into fuel by a chipper and transported along Dustraction’s ductwork runs to their filter system and up the inclined conveyor to a new purpose-built storage silo. GP Cases have a very good website – www.gpcases – explaining the range and extent of bespoke timber packaging they design, manufacture and supply. It is a successful family business which has been based in Royal Wootton Bassett for the last 50 Years. Dustraction replaced all ducting mains throughout the GP Cases factory for the fully automatic transportation of dust and woodchip fuel from all existing drops serving band, panel and cross-cut saws, plus the

heat from fuel waste burned compared with 68% by Wood Waste Technology’s 150kW model that it supersedes. Dustraction’s filter system comprises more than 1,000 sq ft of cloth with a filtration velocity of around 2.38m/min and an automatic shaker system which is designed for periodic removal of cake dust from the filter areas during manufacturing and also on shut-down. “I must give all credit to the men from Dustraction for their help, expertise and sensitivity in providing us with what is to us a revolutionary new extraction and conveyor system,” says David Waldron. The was a difficult job for various reasons, Steve Matuska added, but the planning and attention to detail was meticulous from the outset and that made a major difference when it came to the Installation. “We had very little margin for error because of constraints on height and length but it all came together in the end; we are very pleased with the new system and, more importantly, so is Mr Waldron!” For further information: Tel: 0116 271 3212 Email: steve@dustraction.co.uk

Cades Saves the Day with Ecogate Kelvin KBB, Scotland’s leading manufacturer of Kitchens, Vanity Furniture and Wardrobe Doors, has avoided the need to replace its existing dust extraction system, and significantly reduced its electricity bills, by retrofitting ECOGATE® energy-saving technology from Cades Ltd. Established in 1986, Kelvin KBB employs more than 300 people at its modern 106,000 sq ft facility at Cumbernauld, Glasgow, from where it provides leading house builders and developers with an integrated capability in design, manufacture and installation of kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Kelvin KBB is a long-standing customer of Cades Ltd and, when Cades were appointed as an authorised ECOGATE® installer, they were keen to explore the potential of the acclaimed computerised extraction optimisation system. Kevin Lumb, Facility & Maintenance Manager at Kelvin KBB, explains: “When the company decided to invest in a new Biesse ‘Stream’ edgebander, we called in Steve Rhodes of Cades to discuss the changes in our dust extraction requirements. The existing dust

existing extraction system which meant we were faced with the prospect of having to purchase a whole new system.” As is the case with most workshops, the four fans had been installed to run continuously, at full load, all day long. However, following a thorough site survey and energy appraisal, Cades were able to determine the extraction demand for every single machine in the workshop, and from this they identified how the four fans could be adjusted for volume and duty cycle, with the aim of lowering the average total volume and, therefore, reducing the overall power consumption of the system. Steve Rhodes, Sales Director at Cades, says: “All machines in the workshop are now fitted with motorised Ecogate® damper gates, which automatically open and close as machines are turned on or off. By installing Ecogate® Power MASTER variable speed drive units, with integral greenBOX 12+ controllers, the speed of each fan is continually adjusted as the individual machines come on or off line. Retrofitting the Ecogate® ‘extraction-ondemand’ system means that the existing

filter and fans can now cope easily with the demands of the new edgebander and, in addition, Kelvin KBB is saving around £20,000 a year in electricity costs.” Kevin Lumb adds: “Installing Ecogate obviously made sound business sense and Cades’ engineers carried out the work with little or no disruption to production. We now have a much more efficient, automated extraction system and, as well as the economic advantages, we are also benefitting from having a very much quieter workshop.”

Stage One delivers projects internationally, many of which require set manufacture and construction on an extremely large scale. An important part of the company’s manufacturing capability is its modern, well-equipped woodworking shop which has recently seen the installation of a new dust extraction system from Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS). When it was decided to invest in a new dust extraction system,

Stage One had no hesitation in calling in DCS who have installed several extraction systems at the site, and have provided ongoing servicing for a number of years. Following a thorough evaluation of Stage One’s needs, DCS put forward a proposal centred around a compact yet powerful filter system to be mounted on steelwork outside the wood shop. The new extraction system was sized on a duty of 14,000 m3 per hour, and comprises a high-efficiency NFSZ modular filter unit, fitted with highperformance ‘Superbag’ polyester filter bags, and features pressure-free discharge of waste, via a rotary valve, into a bulk bag. The installation also incorporates safety systems designed to protect the extraction system against the dangers of explosion and/or fire. A BS&B spark detection and extinguishing system comprises a detection zone within the ductwork which triggers a fast acting water extinguisher if a spark is detected. Furthermore, the main ducting system incorporates an ATEX approved

A section of Stage One’s well-equipped wood shop.

CARZ back-pressure flap valve which prevents the effects of a dust explosion from travelling from the filter, back along ductwork, and into the workshop. Nick O’Brien, Wood Shop Supervisor at Stage One, says: “As always, we were pleased with the level of service provided by DCS and the net result is that we now have an extremely safe and efficient system which provides us with a comfortable dustfree working environment.”
