AWARDS

BA Components Celebrate 25th Year On Thursday November 19th 2015 BA Components crowned their 25th incredible year in business with a glittering celebration, with over 300 staff, suppliers, customers, family and guests attending a black tie gala awards night at the Glenavon House Hotel in Cookstown. The statistics were impressive; 332 attendees, a 6-piece band, 1000 plates of food, 11 awards and 6 block-booked hotels making it an unforgettable evening. BA Cookstown staff were joined by colleagues from the Doncaster factory, suppliers from as far away as Japan and customers from over 23 countries serviced by BA. The evening followed earlier guided tours of the Cookstown factory, led by business owners Brian and Kieran McCracken; and was filled with some reminiscing on times past, inspiration for the future, and plenty of laughs in between. Ste Thornley from Thornleys, and winner of both the Best Kitchen Under £15k and Overall award said “The factory tour this morning was brilliant. We were given a great insight into the company and the creation of the products we purchase. Being led through the factory by Brian & Kieran themselves was an honour; being able to absorb their knowledge and experience first-hand.” Following the afternoon’s busy tour schedule, comedian William Caulfield entertained (and sometimes shocked!) guests as he navigated through the black tie dinner and awards presentations with his witty humour, while David Caulfield (Sales & Marketing Director at BA Components) cohosted to oversee every detail of the spectacular night. Sponsors and winners made their way to stage to the accompaniment of live music from The Liberals throughout the evening and to round everything off, a humorous and entertaining tribute leading to a standing ovation was paid to the twin brothers who have taken the business forward for the past 25 years, Brian and Kieran McCracken. The awards winners were as follows: Best Bathroom: Wittering West Ltd Best Bedroom: Drawers N Doors Best Dealer Use of Social Media: J Sheppard &

The quality of the night reflects their attitude to business – striving for the best they can possibly produce. We have had an incredible time tonight – BA have set the bar HIGH. I can’t imagine I’ll ever be at an event of this quality again any time soon.” Brian and Kieran McCracken, Directors of BA Components said “Tonight has been incredible. We are blown away by the level of detail David and his army of helpers have gone to in order to deliver this event. We can’t thank him and all who attended enough for the most memorable and glamorous night BA has had

to date. (jokingly) We’re looking forward to seeing how the 50 year anniversary celebration will top it!” David Caulfield, Sales & Marketing Director at BA Components said “This has truly been a night to remember. A night when customers, staff, suppliers, friends and family all came together for one great party and celebration. All the hard work, stress and sleepless nights have been worthwhile just to see the pleasure and enjoyment everyone experienced tonight.” If you weren’t able to attend on the night, or catch a glimpse of the live stream; fear not! The evening was also recorded and will soon be made available to watch for the first time, or to re-live if you were there. EVENTS Combilift Wins Irish Exporter of the Year Award for a Second Time The Irish Exporters Association (IEA), announced Combilift as the Exporter of the Year 2015 at the Export Industry Awards which were held recently in Dublin. In their 15th year, the Awards are the premier event to recognise the remarkable achievements of companies working in the export industry in Ireland. Combilift took home the overall Exporter of the Year Award 2015 after also winning the hotly contested Multinational Exporter of the Year Award category earlier in the evening. This is the second time the award was scooped by Combilift as it won the same accolade in 2008 as an SME. Combilift developed the world's first IC engine-powered all-wheel-drive multidirectional forklift and today exports

its wide range of handling products to over 75 countries. Sales in the period from 2012 to 2014 rose by 48%, underlining the company’s almost unprecedented success in its industry sector. Speaking at the Awards Ceremony, Hugh Kelly, President of the Irish Exporters Association said: “We are delighted to announce Combilift as the winner of the overall Exporter of the Year 2015. Since it was established in 1998 by Martin McVicar and Robert Moffett, Combilift has grown to become a global leader in its field. The standard of Award entrants this year was higher than ever before but our judges were struck by the energy, ability and ambition of Combilift’s management and employees to deliver strong results, year after year. They commended the continuous innovation evident in the company’s product range, its

standards of excellence in manufacturing and its contribution as a substantial employer in the Monaghan region. We wish Combilift every success in the years to come.” Combilift MD Martin McVicar commented: “We are very honoured to have our achievements recognised by the IEA with the overall Exporter Award. We are also particularly proud to have come out on top in the Multinational Category where we were up against some very tough competition from major concerns such as Irish Distillers, Valeo Vision Systems and ABP Food Group.” For further information: Tel: + 353 (0) 47 80500 Email: info@combilift.com www.combilift.com

EVENTS 2016 Will be a Turning Point! “We really feel that the next Xylexpo will be an essential stage in the success story of our exhibition: we are doing all we can to create a big event, an excellent review of innovative technology featuring all the leading actors of this industry. And I am proud to say that all Italian companies will be there!”. This is the comment by Lorenzo Primultini – president of the exhibition – about what we can expect at the next edition of the international biennial trade fair scheduled at FieraMilano-Rho from 24 to 28 May 2016. Primultini spoke at the end of the board meeting held by Acimall the Confindustria member association that organizes the exhibition to discuss projects and initiatives for Xylexpo 2016.

FIGURES Here are a few figures. So far, 300 exhibitors have registered, with a 22 percent share of international companies. If we take a closer look, besides several registrations already submitted, there is a huge number of first-time exhibitors in Milan, which suggests

that the figures of 2014 will probably be exceeded next May. “We expect at least 500 exhibitors, largely above the 440 result of 2014, while the exhibition area will be much wider than the 26, 176 square meters we covered two years ago. We are even more optimistic on the visitor side: in 2014 we recorded more than 44 thousand accesses in five days, corresponding to 15,250 “unique visitors”: this year, everything seems to suggest that we will do even better”. An exhibition is not just figures, but most of all ideas, challenges, capacity to “handle” situations, preserving the role despite the problems of recent editions and thanks to the professional approach by Cepra of an exhaustive showcase of "made in Italy" technology and the best solutions offered by manufacturers from all over the world. “Our optimism is supported by several factors Primultini added . First of all, our exhibition will represent the entire industry: all the leading actors of the industry will be in Milan, with no exception, and this is a major achievement, especially for our industry that in Milan one of its traditional global capitals will find all those who offer technology and

innovation, make research and work to find new solutions to new problems, day after day. I am not referring only to big groups, to the fact that Barberan, Biesse, Cefla, Homag, Ima, Scm and Weinig are finally back to Milan, all together, but also to so many small and medium businesses from all over the world, which have been able to overcome these tough years with their innovative strength, their capacity to find creative solutions. They will all be in Milan, an exhibition where technology is at home, both process technology for big production volumes and “tailor-made” solutions for very specific needs”. “If you don’t take this chance, you will miss a great opportunity, I’m sure… Large, medium and small business from all around the world will be exhibiting in Milan, together with all Italian manufacturers. I repeat: no one will be missing! I really believe it’s going to be a great event and a great business opportunity”. For further information: Email: info@xylexpo.com www.xylexpo.com

FIMMA 2016 Incorporates Global Giants in Machinery and Technology The event will take place on 2nd. to 5th. February together with Maderalia, Cevisama and Hábitat • Homag, Holzer- Weinig, Biesse, SCM Group, Felder and Barberán commit their participation to the fair. • FIMMA exhibitors will be located in Hall 7 of Feria Valencia in order to gain in size, reaching more than 10.000 sq. mts. in exhibition surface The International trade show for machinery and tooling for the furniture and joinery industries, commits the participation of major global players in technology and solutions to the next FIMMA show, due to take place from 2nd. to 5th. February next concurring with Maderalia, Cevisama (and its new Kitchen Corner sector) and Feria Hábitat Valencia. Companies such as the Homag Group, from Germany, the largest manufacturer of special machinery for furniture manufacture or Holzer-Weinig, a specialist in solid wood working and machining of boards, will be present, the latter steeply returning to the Valencia show. We will additionally have the attendance of the high-powered company group Felder, with their extensive catalogue in circular saws, surface planing and thicknessing machines, molding machines, CNC edge

banding and sanding machines. Together with the German market, Italy is also a global pole of leader manufacturers in this industry and top Trans-Alpine companies are also going to choose FIMMA. This is the case with the Grupo Biesse, specialist in numerical control machines and in the machining of different materials that choose again the Feria Valencia event as their showcase in our country and with Italian giant SCM Group, which has since positioned itself as an important referent in technologically advanced solutions for materials whose characteristics are as different as those of wood, glass, plastics, marble, metal or composite. FIMMA will also showcase Spanish companies having a strong global vocation such as Barberán, which is internationally recognized, for their solutions in varnishing systems, printing, coating, sanding, laminate and postforming. “We are proud that we have in our show major global players of the industry, who have placed their trust in FIMMA as one of the main European shows”, explains Miguel Bixquert, director of the fair, who confirms that “with less than five months left for the start of the fair, the marketing process shows a better performance than expected”.

Larger exhibition area Due to the size of the event, a new location has been chosen, for the machinery section specifically, that will be transferred to Hall 7 of Feria Valencia. This is an exhibition space adding up to this show that includes all the events belonging to the initiative “See you in Valencia”, providing answers to the specific needs of the machinery sector, such as large spaces and corridors and logistics facilities for the assembly, loading and unloading of the complex systems and processes required by this type of exhibitors. Specifically, FIMMA’s exhibition area will be located in an area of more than 10.000 square meters of exhibition at the level of the floor in Hall 7. This will connect this area both with Maderalia and with Habitat and Cevisama, facilitating a constant flow of visitors and professionals among the different shows.

SAWS

Striebig takes control at busy furniture maker An extremely successful London-based furniture designer and manufacturer specialising in high quality tables and benches is benefitting from the considerable versatility of a Striebig Control vertical panel saw. James Burleigh has been designing and making furniture for over 20 years. In 2012 he moved from a small design studio to an industrial unit in north west London to harmonise the design and manufacturing processes. The operation is soon to expand still further into an adjoining unit which will more than double the available space. Now employing 12 men in the workshop, the range of tables and benches produced by hand are highly distinctive with their hardwood edges capped by laminate. They are supplied for use in bars, boardrooms, break-out spaces, museums, offices, restaurants, schools and universities. Said workshop supervisor Chris Price: “We had two flat bed saws but because a lot of the work we do requires the cutting of 3m x 1.5m laminate panels, it was a twoman job to load the panels onto the saws. As we needed another saw to keep up with an increasing workload, it was decided that a labour-saving model would be a better option.” As the staff had worked with a variety of saws at different companies over the years they agreed that a Striebig offered the best quality. In order to see the latest models in action company owner James Burleigh, together with production manager Nick Robinson and Chris Price, visited Striebig’s stand at the W14 exhibition at Birmingham. “The trip reinforced our initial decision that a Striebig represented the best option for us,” said Chris Price. “When you looked at all the different makes of saw on show, the high quality build of the Striebig really stood out.” Because of the large dimensions of the 3mm thick laminate panels they need to size, a Control 5168 model with its maximum cut size of 4300 x 1680mm coupled with a maximum depth of cut of 80mm was chosen. To everyone’s delight they soon

discovered a valuable added bonus. The Control could trim the 40mm thick sections of the laminate-faced solid wood frames – mainly oak or walnut – used in the construction of the tables and benches. This task was previously carried out manually. “Although we bought the Striebig for laminate sizing in order to take the pressure off our two flat bed saws, we thought we would try it out with a frame component and to our great surprise we found it did the job perfectly,” said Chris Price. “As with laminate panel sizing – we can put up to eight 3mm panels on at a time - trimming the frames has now become a one-man job, freeing up someone for other work. It’s a fantastic piece of kit which is totally accurate every time we use it.” The Striebig Control represents the cutting edge in vertical panel saw technology. It sets itself apart from other makes with its high degree of automation and user-friendly operations that delivers risk-free operation. Features include an electronic position system (EPS) which is fully integrated into the touch screen panel. It allows the simple positioning of both horizontal and vertical cutting axes with 1/10 mm precision. It also has a fully automatic roller locking function, an auxiliary stop section with its own tape measure, three additional auxiliary stops for repeat cuts and small work piece support, and automatic moving backing support. An invaluable accessory specified by James Burleigh is the unique 4SB foursided trimming unit. This enables the bottom trim cut to be carried out automatically without having to lift or turn the panel, eliminating manual handling, damaged edges and lost time. Striebig’s sole UK supplier T.M. Machinery, who provided full operating training, also installed a stand-alone Al-Ko dust extraction unit for use with the Control. panel saws, with more than 30 years’ technical expertise. It’s the quality of their construction, innovative technology andoutstanding accuracy of 0.1 mm that have made the company the undisputed market leaders for the sizing of wood, plastic and other panel materials. With models for all sizes of businesses and a large number of accessories available, a Striebig saw can be supplied to suit every production requirement.

PROFILE A Complete Manufacturing Work Cell for Less Than £12.50 an Hour from HOMAG UK With the advent of high performance automated woodworking machinery, smaller woodworking shops have found it increasingly difficult to compete. The speed, quality and versatility of the equipment have given larger companies an even bigger competitive advantage, even with bespoke or batch size one items. The HOMAG Group has been conscious of this situation for some time and has been working hard to develop a solution that will benefit the niche workshops. The latest machinery from the Group has achieved this goal and now you can invest in a complete manufacturing cell, including a high quality beam saw, a zero-joint edgebander and a CNC drilling machine for under £12.50 an hour*. If you are looking to consistently produce premium quality panel based products, whether for furniture, kitchens, bedrooms, shop fitting or other items, this package from HOMAG will revolutionise your business. “These three machines really do offer a complete panel manufacturing cell for small companies,” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK. He continues, “The introduction of the new HOLZMA HPP 130 beam saw and the BRANDT Ambition 1230 airTec edgebander, alongside the proven WEEKE BHX 050/055 CNC drilling and routing machines, provides incredible value for a complete panel processing cell at an extremely affordable price.”

PROFILE The BRANDT Ambition1230 airTec – first class edgebanding every time

easyTouch control The appeal of BRANDT's new easyTouch control system lies in its intuitive operation and user oriented menu structure. It features a clearly arranged 7" graphic display with simple touch screen operation. These days, the ever increasing diversity of edge materials requires a highly flexible machine with rapid edge-changing capabilities. The easyTouch control system makes it possible to adapt the range of operations to meet customers' specific requirements and save the programs for instant call up. The new easyTouch controller has supporting functions that are simple and easy to access. The logging of production data, the selection of programmes or the glue temperature can be quickly checked on the 7" display.

High performance with cost efficiency Simon Brooks again, “The main economic benefits of the BRANDT Ambition 1230 airTec are time saving and an excellent price/efficiency ratio. It offers complete panel processing with its pneumatic adjustments of the pressure zone, end trimming unit, trimming unit and scraping unit all contributing to this performance. “It can handle edge thicknesses from 0.4mm to 6mm, along with a panel thickness capability of 8 – 60mm. It’s a real work horse which will deliver first class results day after day at a cost of under £5.00 per hour*.”

WEEKE BHX 050/055 – Vertical CNC drilling and routing Launched at Ligna in 2009, the WEEKE BHX 050 set a new benchmark for throughfeed machining centres with a cost

per hour of just over £3.50*. This ultra-compact model, with a footprint of less than 5m2, has an equally trim price and more than 3000 have been sold worldwide. A reliable 3-axis processing centre, the BHX 050 can drill on five sides. It is capable of grooving and routing at fast throughput rates whilst, at the same time, keeping energy bills down due to its low energy usage. The versatile BHX 050 is capable of processing panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm up to panels as big as 2500 x 850 x 60mm as standard. There is also an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. It can process any type of wood based panel such as MFC, MDF, HDF and plywood, however, this robust machine can even handle demanding materials such as Trespa and solid wood components.

High praise “The WEEKE BHX 050 is a great little machine,” enthuses HOMAG UK customer, Steve Payne of S R Furniture. He continues, “Compact and highly efficient, the 050 has enabled us to almost double our production capacity of doors. It has also enabled us to free up time on our main CNC machine and is the perfect backup for it, as it runs on the same operating software and is very easy to use.” “It speaks volumes for the BHX 050 that, given the choice, our operators would rather use that machine over the larger one. It does exactly what it says on the tin and even has an eco-friendly setting which puts the machine into energy saving mode when it is not being used. “We are delighted with the little WEEKE CNC; it has not only significantly improved our productivity, but also given us peace of mind as a backup CNC,” adds Steve.

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

The next step up The success of the BHX 050 prompted WEEKE to develop a higher specified version, the BHX 055. This powerhouse has all the benefits of the original 050 but includes automatic adjustment of work piece thickness, a maximum working length up to 3050mm and 13 vertical spindles as standard. “The BHX 055 is a great little machine,” claims Richard Meakin of Contour Furnishings. As a specialist manufacturer of bespoke bedroom furniture, we have a lot of panel drilling and routing to do. We’ve had a pod and rail CNC from WEEKE for many years, but we needed a more flexible back up to the Venture 3 that would give us high throughput. “The 055 is perfect. It is quick and easy to set up which means most of the team in the factory can operate it with ease. Being an upright CNC, it only occupies a small footprint and so was simple to fit into our facility without causing disruption.”

A new dawn “This entry level package form HOMAG represents a new dawn for the smaller manufacturer,” concludes Simon Brooks. “It brings them on par with larger producers, opening up new markets and delivering new levels of professionalism to the niche operators.”

SOFTWARE

New Alphacam Reduces Users’ Cad/Cam Time A number of new and enhanced items in the latest release of Alphacam software focus on automation, reducing users’ CAD/CAM time. The new Automation Manager means 2D and 3D Cad files, along with solid models from third party software, can now be batch processed, from file preparation right through to applying toolpaths, with NC code being generated automatically. In addition, the files create a full report structure, along with labels and bar coding. EMEA Sales Manager Michael Pettit says: “In a standard CAD/CAM system each file would have to be processed individually by inserting the file, extracting the features, applying tool directions and toolpaths, saving the file and NC code, then generating the required reports. But Alphacam takes a group, or batch, of files and automates the complete processing of the parts. “Overall, this will save the end user days and weeks, potentially even months

10 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

of programming time in a year.” Three additional enhancements – Parametric Sketcher, File Inserter, and 2D Transform – combine to make further operations quicker and easier: Parametric Sketcher provides a simple way of parametrically generating geometries for files that are used regularly, without the need for

complicated constraints or routines. “Common CAD geometry is created automatically, regenerating the file with any required variables, meaning there is no need to redraw similar components or families of parts. They are built using standard geometry commands and parts with the same form but different sizes are created by simply modifying the

values of one or more variables.” File Inserter, the new geometry creation tool, allows pre-defined elements such as hinges and locks on a door to be inserted easily onto a newly created drawing from the parametric sketcher. And the new geometry modification tool, 2D Transform, combines a number of commands, making it simpler to manipulate operations such as distort, scale, move and rotate. Michael Pettit says with machine time becoming increasingly more expensive, Alphacam 2016 R1’s new Auto-Update Material function is critical, giving the option to associate a material to autoupdate after each cutting operation. “It optimises time on the CNC machine by automatically updating stock, ensuring that subsequent toolpaths are only relevant to the residual material “ Enhanced sawing options for wood and stone make it easier to cut intricate shapes such as internal arcs, while also providing a scratch cut for laminates, removing pockets with a sawing blade, and support for canned cycles. As CNC machinery becomes more sophisticated Alphacam continues to develop automating the movement of pods, rails and clamps. “Again, this speeds up the machining process even

more, giving the user full control directly from the CAM station.” A new function has been added to Alphacam’s powerful nesting module – Roll-Split. “Certain manufacturers need to nest shapes onto rolled sheets, so the nest can be quite long. In 2016 R1 they can now split the roll to the required dimensions for a specific machine bed. The parts are nested on a sheet which represents the length of the roll required as a long rectangle. Maximum and minimum distances are set, and Alphacam determines the best position for the sheet ends.” He says because of increasing complexity, both of modern parts and CNC machines, accurate simulation covering all aspects of machining is vital before sending the component to the machine. Further enhancements have been added to the simulation function, which now supports solid tool holders of any type – Solid, STL, extrusions and rotations – for collision detection. Alphacam continues to develop its GUI with 2016 R1. “There’ve been significant changes to the interface in recent releases, and we always make it as easy and as modern as possible. Users now have the option to use a tab format or wizard when using the machining dialog.”

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

As well as the major updates, there are a number of minor enhancements, including further improvements to Alphacam’s advanced 5-axis toolpath creation; one of which is to Machining Styles, which now remembers the selection criteria without showing the dialog box. Also, layer assignment has been added to the drive surface. “Alphacam 2016 R1 has been geared to assist users in their everyday bread and butter task of generating quick, accurate, NC code, by automating their processes to save considerable amounts of time,” concludes Michael Pettit.

CASE STUDY HOMAG Venture 316 Delivers New Opportunities and Productivity Gains Over 150 years ago, Gordon Ellis & Company started making wooden window frames for buildings. Since then, it has grown into a business making a wide variety of products and components from beautiful wooden furniture to jar lids and hardwood planters. “It’s been an incredible journey,” explains Colin Doyle, product development engineer for Gordon Ellis. He continues, “When the company started it was all done with hand tools and horses; now, we have the latest CNC precision woodworking machinery as we continually strive to improve the quality of our products and services. “Our latest investment has been the HOMAG Venture 316 5-axis CNC processing centre. We have seen a lot of growth recently which has really pushed the capacity on our six 3-axis CNC routers. A 5axis machine gives us more capacity, but also gives us new opportunities to be creative.”

Outstanding Value “We evaluated machines from three leading CNC manufacturers. One of the brands just didn’t match up to our requirements and, of the other two, we felt that the HOMAG model offered us much better value for money. “From the very start, the team at HOMAG UK were really responsive and professional. We went to the Castle Donington showroom for a product demonstration and they made us feel very welcome. During the course of the decision-making process, we visited HOMAG UK at least three times. Their insights and recommendations were a great help in finalising the specification of the machine and gave us complete confidence that we were making the right decision.”

5-Axis Flexibility “Many of the components we manufacture have to go through a number of different processes such as sawing, tenoning, drilling and grooving. With the 3-

axis machines we had to move the components from one machine to the next to perform each individual activity. Now, the 5-axis machine does the lot and has increased our productivity. “The old machines were mostly two head models, whereas the Venture 316 holds 14 different tools. This gives it the capability to carry out a wide number of different tasks, reducing the amount of time we have to spend moving components around the shop floor.”

Speed of Processing “The Venture 316 enables us to get jobs through the factory much quicker; we are really impressed with how fast it processes components and with the quality of the finished items. Although it is early days, it has already helped to reduce some of the waste and scrap parts that we saw with the older machines. “The other big time-saver is in set-up. Once the programme has been set-up, the repeat process is so fast; I have to say, it was

one of the key drivers in our decision to purchase the machine.”

5-Star Service “Throughout every stage of the purchasing process, HOMAG has been very professional. Once we’d ordered the machine, the delivery and installation went like clockwork. The machine was delivered on time and the installation was completed within the week. “The initial training of the operators was carried out by the HOMAG engineers during the installation week. They were not only very good, but also very patient and flexible. They were able to help employees

with very different skillsets to gain a solid grounding on the machine. “Following this, we sent operators on a four day training programme at HOMAG UK to gain more experience of the machine and the woodWOP software. This again, was very successful and gave our operators real confidence to get the most out of the machine.”

“Because it enables us to undertake more complex components we can attract new and different customers. Jobs with difficult angles and unusual shapes can be done with ease on the Venture 316. This gives us the potential to offer more to our customers,” concludes Colin Doyle.

The Future’s Bright “So far, we feel we’ve only scratched the surface of what can be achieved with Venture 316. The increase in both capacity and capability is already opening new avenues for our business.

‘Comeback Classics’ Make A Welcome Return A new take on timeless classics forms the centerpiece of EGGER’s latest décor introductions – with the emphasis on highly-realistic woodgrain finishes. Available in laminate, melamine-faced chipboard and ABS edging, seven new woodgrain decors complement the company’s recently revamped worktop range to create a timeless look that is right on trend. EGGER’s head of décor development Elliott Fairlie believes traditional woodgrains have fallen out of favour recently as kitchen manufacturers opt instead for matt and gloss unicolours – particularly in European-inspired designs. “But as print and texture development improves, we see the popularity of classic species returning, which is why we have added some exciting new designs in our range with what we call our ‘comeback classics’ – a modern twist on some old favourites,” he said. “A look finding favour in many new designs is an increase in the use of solid colour as frontals, with woodgrains being used as more of an accent. This might be in the form of worktops, splashbacks, end panels or open shelving. “Our new oak and walnut decors have become much more interesting, and we have even seen a return of hickory – where the imperfections and subtle interplay of colours produce a stunning look reminiscent of crown-cut oak.” Included in the ten new introductions is a new versatile solid colour that is neither white nor grey – but instead a cool new blue called Fjord that EGGER expects to have long-lasting appeal when used as a combination colour. It features an ST 9 finish that adds a modern tactile feel. For further information: Tel: 01434 613359 www.egger.co.uk

Evola collection wins German Iconic Award! The German Iconic Awards have been presented for more than 60 years and are the leading accolades in areas such as architecture, interior & product design. Each year, the Iconic Awards recognise the most innovative products, both in terms of design and functionality. UNILIN Panels Division has won this award in the “product > special” category that recognises the amazing functionality of the entire Evola collection.

Evola: the high-end collection from UNILIN Panels Division The Evola collection captures trends in interior decorating by paying attention to even the smallest details. The designs meticulously imitate every single feature of the original materials. UNILIN not only expanded its existing range of wood designs, but also extended it with eight different solid colours in addition to a line of highly realistic-looking metallic and concrete designs. Through the Evola collection, UNILIN is able to provide the perfect answer to the demand from interior architects and designers for high-quality, durable and affordable products. Evola is fully designed inhouse by UNILIN and consists of a collection of exclusive, unique designs and surface structures. Evola designs are always as close as possible to the original material, while also offering the many advantages of HPL and melamine faced boards. This means that Evola decorative panels not only look beautiful and lifelike, but they also feel particularly authentic. They are also extremely durable, scratch-resistant, colourfast and easy to care for and maintain.

Synchrone surface textures, even in HPL The greatest advantage offered by the revamped collection is without a doubt that UNILIN now offers synchrone surface textures — which until now could only be produced on melamine-faced board — on HPL. Each design also has matching edge-banding. The result is a sustainable, ecologically-friendly, low-maintenance and affordable product that can be installed quickly and easily for use in a wide range of interior and furniture applications.

Two Further Colours Added To The Decofoil Range David Clouting is celebrating thirty years of business, having been established in 1985. In that period of time, David Clouting has developed from an edging supplier to a multi product distributor. Concentrating on selling decorative surfaces, David Clouting is a leading supplier of interior and exterior decorative films to both the domestic furniture and commercial interior sectors. For pressed panels, which allow a softer emphasis to break up a completely flat look on furniture panels, the most recent décor introductions focus on gloss solid colour and metallic gloss. Metallic gloss has been a feature of the Decofoil stock range for several years and now two further colours have been added to this range at the back end of 2015. These colours are metallic blue and champagne. Both colours are suitable for kitchen and bathrooms in particular. The three original metallic gloss colours have long been specified on furniture, both for pressed and flat panels, with anthracite metallic being a key colour in recent product ranges. The full colour range in metallic colours is: • Silver • Anthracite • Black • Blue • Champagne Solid colour gloss Decofoil continues to lead the way in sales for high gloss doors, and there is no sign of the consumers’ enthusiasm waning for the gloss look, even as the LG Matt Hard Coat finish starts to establish itself. Dust Grey gloss is being launched, and this complements the appetite for grey tones across all interior decorative ranges. Graphite Gloss has been introduced in 2015 to add to the 2014 introductions of Light Grey, Stone Grey, Cashmere and Dakar.

BOARDS & PANELS SterlingOSB – A Name That Means Value for Money SterlingOSB, Norbord’s market-leading oriented-strand board product, not only enjoys a reputation among builders and their suppliers for quality and reliability; it is also considered excellent value, according to recent research. A study carried out on behalf of Norbord has found that 74% of builders and 60% of builders’ merchants agree that the SterlingOSB name represents good value. Made at Norbord’s factory in Inverness using wood fibre sourced from local forests, SterlingOSB represents an extremely efficient use of raw materials. Because the basic raw material is sourced locally, transport and fuel costs are very low. Furthermore, the wood used to make SterlingOSB comes from forest ‘thinnings’ – the spindly trees thinned from the timber plantations to give the bigger trees space to grow. Thinnings are abundant and cheap, meaning that the price of SterlingOSB is always competitive. Low material and transport costs mean fewer costs to pass on to the customer. Even

the energy used to make the board is largely generated by Norbord’s own on-site biomass plant, burning process residues – a waste byproduct. While efficient production and delivery means better value for the customer,

INSTALLATION

Kündig Sanders for Halstock High class furniture and interior design company, Halstock, designs, manufactures and installs luxury bespoke interiors. Working with architects, interior designers, project managers, quantity surveyors and private clients, the company demands the best in all that it does. The combination of the team's knowledge and experience delivers unique and imaginative solutions, often exceeding expectations. The type of work covered includes bathrooms; doors & panelling; dressing rooms; free standing furniture; gun rooms; kitchens; intricate boxes described on the website as 'Little Halstock'; media rooms; studies & libraries; and wine cellars. The team of 50 includes a dedicated veneering team as well as 12 cabinet makers and a dedicated installation team. In order to help maintain the highest standards, Halstock purchased a Kündig Brilliant-2 1350 REd sander in 2010, which is still giving excellent service today. “We had an existing Kündig Enorm-Primo sander we had purchased about 15 years ago, which we needed to upgrade,” said production director Jasper Heinrich. “The old sander is still perfectly useable, and in fact is still in use today: but it only had a single head, while the Kündig Brilliant sander is fitted with two, so we can do two processes in one go thus achieving a better finish but also productivity improvements. “The new Kündig technology also means

26 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

less sand-throughs, when veneer gets sanded too thin: the new sander eradicates this problem with segmented pad sanding” Halstock has also purchased a Kündig edge sander, bringing the number of Kündig sanders it owns at time of writing to three. While researching his choice of sander in 2010, Jasper visited a number of different manufacturers, including Kündig. As part of his research, he was taken by Carl O'Meara of Kündig Ltd to the visit the company's head office in Switzerland, where Kündig has possibly the largest display of wide belt sanding machines on display, all running for demonstration purposes and of different specifications, so any trials can be made from solid wood sanding through to high gloss. The visit left Jasper enthusiastic about the Kündig range: “They are the absolutely premium brand on the market. All they do is sanders. By visiting the factory in Switzerland you know you are dealing with a quality brand: the way they work, the way they assemble, the way they communicate convinced me I am dealing with a class leader. And Jasper is equally as enthusiastic about the service he has received from Carl O'Meara: “The way Carl is set up is particularly good for machinery. He has a great knowledge and he was never pushy. He gave us information, took us to Switzerland, and allowed us the space to make up our own minds. We had a few teething problems that were down to a lack of knowledge on our part rather than any problem with the machine: and Carl was always on the phone to assist us.” The sander selected by Halstock was

specified to cater for both solid wood and veneer sanding requirements. It has a dedicated calibration roller followed by a segmental pad which can be placed at a 10° angle to offer a 'shear cut' across the surface: the well-known oblique sanding feature. The machine was also fitted with the optional infeed and outfeed tables along with variable speed control to the second head, to allow higher grade abrasives to be used. All flat panelled and timber sections used by Halstock in its manufacturing pass through the Kündig sander, which is used particularly for calibration of boards pre veneering, for the sanding of solid components and for the de-nibbing of polyester finishes. Senior cabinet maker, David Higgins, believes that the oblique sanding option is a real benefit particularly when high gloss polyester coatings are being processed, with even sticky polyester belt-clogging being greatly reduced by the oblique sanding head. “You get an outstandingly even and smooth surface with oblique sanding,” he says. When asked if he would recommend Kündig, Jasper replied, “yes and very highly. The next machinery upgrade here will probably be the bringing in of another Kündig machine. A sander other than another Kündig will not enter the equation.”

EDGEBANDERS

Laser Edging Without the Laser Price Tag Holz-Her unveils Accura and Lumina edgebanding solutions with two visual zero glue systems Holz-Her's state-ofthe-art range of panel processing machines have real-world production management at their heart. You might expect the hundred year heritage, world class engineering and reputation for quality and innovation, but it’s Holz-Her’s understanding of customer production issues, commitment to making manufacturing easier, removing aggravation and providing solutions which really set the company apart. This dedication to solving production problems and providing managed systems has most recently resulted in two new edgebanding models and two ultra-thin glue line systems, including the patented Holz-Her Glu Jet system.

Holz-Her Edgebander Accura Series Designed for the highest standards of quality and flexibility, the Accura series covers the complete processing of modern edging and panel materials, and it comes

Glue-Jet

with Holz-Her’s Glu Jet application system for standard use of PUR glue. Program selection allows the machine to be set up without even opening the hood, so it’s ready for production immediately. The new Accura series was developed by Holz-Her for high quality workshops and industrial manufacturers. Its modular system is flexible and can be adapted to customer requirements and future needs. Key to its development was 100% repetition

accuracy, fully automatic and flexible setting, and perfect appearance of the parts produced. New servo-axes use state-of-theart, play-free, mechanical components. The Accura 1558 is a future-oriented milestone for edgebanders designed for absolute maximum performance.

Holz-Her Edgebander Lumina Series The Lumina series provides absolute quality, flexibility and productivity. It offers everything required for professional edgebanding. Up to 30 NC servo-axes enable maximum automation of all processes with exact repetition at the touch of a button. Even the pressure and glue quantity settings can be made fully automatically and adapted to the specific requirement. The new Lumina series offers two systems for perfectly invisible joints. The Glu Jet and the LTronic - the new laser edging unit from Holz-Her - are unbeatable in terms of speed and cost efficiency. The Lumina 1588 performance remains highly flexible, allowing adaptation to your specific requirements.

Holz-Her patented Glu Jet System Invisible joints with thin film technology and a three year warranty Coming as standard with all Holz-Her Edgebanders, Holz-Her’s patented Glu Jet System delivers one-of-a-kind edging results with

ultra-thin glue joints, easily equivalent to industrial laser edges. The hybrid technology combined with Holz-Her thin film technology enables visual zero joints with PUR glue, perfect for wet areas including bathrooms, student accommodation and kitchen environments. From high gloss through to solid wood edging, the system is both flexible and versatile. Such is its build quality and reliability, the Glu Jet system comes with a three-year warranty as standard. This is industrial technology for small workshops – you can now process PUR glue on a standard basis, but without the hassle. As the standard for professional cabinet makers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with the demands of the polymer reaction which forms such strong and thin waterproof, temperature tolerant bonds. PUR is difficult to manage with a standard glue pot and molecular cross-linking becomes a problem. With the Glu Jet ready to use in under four minutes with EVA or PUR,

Holz-Her’s unique system is the right solution for any edgebanding requirements. LTronic for Perfect Invisible Joints with Laser Edging The LTronic laser edgebander was developed especially for the Lumina series and processes all co-extruded and subsequently coated Laser Edging on the market. The NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) module in our LTronic unit transfers heat energy quickly and precisely to the specific point required making it ideal for activation of function layers on laser edging. Two different NIR modules are available: the standard module for edge heights up to 23mm, or the optional NIR+ module for edge heights up to 45 mm. It’s ready to use as soon as you switch it on there is no heatup time or any heat-up phases during the machining process. In addition, the complete system operates absolutely silently which is a clear advantage for the user compared to other systems. Cleaning

costs are minimal, with the integrated protective plate on the NIR module only needing to be briefly cleaned just once a week, the system is a pioneer in terms of energy efficiency.

Why not have both? With the Lumina series, you can switch from glue to laser in minutes. Using the high precision HSK interface from our CNC technology, at the push of a button and serial bus connectors, two dedicated carriages facilitate the sliding off and on of units. Changing from laser to PUR or EVA could not be easier, and Holz-Her’s solution was designed to ensure the gluing station is always as close as possible to the pressing station, eliminating the chance of glue shock and subsequent production problems. This simple change-over also enables any preventative maintenance or service to the system not in use with zero down time. The Lumina has an automatic unit recognition feature and is ready for use immediately after changing over to the

Accura 1558

LTronic. The change over time from edge to edge is under 5 minutes. Holz-Her, offering choice without compromise. Holz-Her is a company of the Weinig Group. For further information: Tel: 01235 557600 Email: sales-uk@weinig.com www.holzher.com

BIESSE AirForce System. The “Zero-Glue-Line” evolution Have you ever had the opportunity of seeing a panel edgebanded on four sides with a bonded edge, without using glue? The quality can’t be questioned. No argument. It beats any aesthetic standard. The colour continuity between the edge and surface gives a finish more akin to a painted panel than a plastic edge. This kind of appearance has been described as a “zeroglue-line” and should be the goal for any manufacturer producing kitchen cabinet doors or any visible component for a top quality piece of furniture. The “zero-glue-line” can only be achieved utilizing a special edgebanding tape produced with a co-extrusion of different polymers. This special edge has a functional layer made of Polypropylene (PP 0.2mm thick). This layer is fused to the substrate during the

30 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016

edgebanding process by means of different techniques so the edge is applied to the panel by interpenetration of the polymer into the

panel fibres. PP is today co-extruded and available onto materials such as: PP, PVC, Acrylic, and ABS.

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

EDGEBANDERS

Now we have AirForce System It uses the very simple principle of compressed hot air (400-500° C) to perform the melting of the functional layer. Results are excellent! The maximum working speeds are up to 25 m/min using the most common 18 mm panels. The simplicity and the cost of the AirForce System is far lower than Laser systems, it’s maintenance and operating costs are not even comparable. The quality of the panels processed with an AirForce System is even slightly better than that achieved with other systems. Its resistance to water, humidity and peel provide the same standard as that of laser processes. AirForce Systems also have unbeatable advantages in that they can be installed on small to large machines, making the top quality standard of the welded edge accessible to everyone now. It is no longer restricted to large companies with higher capital budgets. AirForce System also has minimal impact

on machine mechanics, meaning it can easily co-exist with the glue system (EVA or PUR). A BIESSE edgebander equipped with AirForce can have the capability of using any kind of glue. This represents a significant advantage as we should consider that over the next few years all machines will be equipped with both systems. Another very important aspect of the new AirForce technology is that coextruded edgebanding tape may become much simpler. The PP functional layer of the Laser edge needs specific “absorber” components in order to react to Laser Light. The absorbers react to a specific wave length (mostly used 980nm wave length frequency) and melts the functional 0.2mm PP. Laser technique is also very sensitive to edge colour. Dark and light colours have a dramatically different reaction to Laser light so the settings need to be properly adjusted. If not, there is a risk of the edge not adhering to the panel, or melting too much that it burns the edge. If you’re using PP coextruded on

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

PVC, an imprecise Laser tune-up may cause unnecessary risks to the environment and people’s health safety. AirForce System is a very promising and will allow any manufacturer to supply top quality furniture to their customers. BIESSE AirForce System is available in two versions: STEP1 and STEP2. STEP1 is an option for medium size machines such as the AKRON 1400, which achieves a working speed up to 15 m/min on most common 18mm panel thickness. Running consumption is about 5 KW. STEP2 is for medium to high range machines such as our STREAM range, which achieves a working speed up to 20 m/min on most common 18mm panel thickness. Running consumption about 9.5 KW.

CNC PROCESSING

WEEKE’s BHX CNC Drilling Centres Range Proves a Success With Record Sales Since its inception in 1945, WEEKE has always strived to push the technological boundaries, producing state of the art machinery for the woodworking industry. From humble beginnings, WEEKE soon became established as a world market leading manufacturer of CNC machinery and equipment for panel processing and solid wood machining. It was WEEKE’s passion for engineering excellence, attention to detail and, most of all, its ability to understand the needs of its customers that has led it to consistently develop revolutionary technology for the woodworking industry.

Whilst technology has always been one of the cornerstones of the business, so too has WEEKES’s attention to the market’s needs. The increasing move towards batch-size one production and the need for smaller footprint machinery were instrumental in the development of the BHX 050, a state-ofthe-art drilling and routing CNC centre. Launched in 2009, it was an instant success and has been incredibly popular with total machine sales of over 3000.

WEEKE’s ground-breaking BHX 050 ultra-compact drilling centre The WEEKE BHX 050 Optimat is an ultra-compact throughfeed drilling centre with an equally trim price tag from the

HOMAG Group. It is considered the ideal drilling solution for all businesses whether small, medium or large. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK comments, “Sales of the BHX 050 have been amazing. With over 3000 machines sold, clearly, it’s proved to be a real winner. It is an ideal CNC machining centre particularly for kitchen, bedroom or office furniture producers. “The unique advantage of the BHX 050 is that it is packed with all the features of a conventional CNC, but, with a footprint of less than 5m2, it’s small enough to fit comfortably in any production facility. What’s more, the icing on the cake is the

CNC PROCESSING price tag which is easily within reach of most manufacturers. We have been hugely successful with the BHX 050 in the UK and demand for this versatile CNC machine continues to grow. “It is a reliable 3-axis processing centre equipped for all drilling needs. It can drill on five sides and is capable of grooving and routing at fast throughput rates whilst, at the same time, keeping energy bills down due to its low energy usage.”

Highly flexible The versatile BHX 050 is capable of processing panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm up to panels as big as 2500 x 850 x 60mm as standard. There is also an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. Simon continues, “The BHX 050 can process any type of wood panel and is most commonly used for MFC, MDF. We have had situations, however, where even demanding materials such as Trespa and solid wood components are being handled by this robust machine.”

A real time-saver that offers true value

Fast and simple controls with powerTouch

“Generally, smaller machines mean processing times are extended. The WEEKE BHX 050, however, can match the rapid processing times of much larger machines. Customers that have seen the BHX 050 put through its paces, have been nothing but impressed by its capability. “Once the programming has been done, the set-up takes just seconds; it only requires the push of a pedal and press of a button to get it started. A really productive feature on the BHX 050 is the panel holding system. There are no vacuum pod or beam positions to worry about, the machine automatically positions the panel clamp correctly to suit each panel. “The BHX 050 is great for one-off production due to its immense flexibility and we have many customers using the machine for make to order ‘cabinet by cabinet’ production. All the operator has to do is load the parts – it’s simple and efficient. “Although it is classed as an entry level machine, no compromises have been made on build quality or safety. The BHX 050 has the features you’d expect from a WEEKE machine, all at a real value for money price.”

The new powerTouch system unites design with functionality in a totally new user interface. Central to the new system is a large wide-screen multi-touch monitor which enables the operator to control the machine’s functions by simply touching the screen. The ultra-modern user interface offers an array of help and assistance functions designed to radically simplify the work experience. Standardised control elements and software modules ensure that all HOMAG Group machines can be operated with the same familiar look and feel using powerTouch. This not only simplifies the operation of different machines, but also makes for greater efficiency by significantly reducing time for servicing and training.

WEEKE’s BHX 200 – The next generation WEEKE unveiled its BHX 200 CNC processing centre, the next generation of small footprint vertical CNC technology, at Ligna 2013. changer as well as a tiltable grooving saw. It is the big brother to the BHX 050/055 series and utilises the same vertical machining style. The BHX 200, however, boasts considerably faster machining speeds whilst maintaining high levels of precision, despite its small size. The machine is equipped with two individually moveable high-speed drilling heads which activate a total of 36 highspeed drilling spindles enabling, for example, rows of holes to be processed considerably faster. As standard, the BHX 200 is equipped with two CNC-controlled no-vacuum clamping devices to precisely position and fix the work pieces during operation, so no setting times are required. The adjustable clamping system allows for larger work piece loads as well as a motorised work piece thickness adjustment. “We expect demand for the BHX 050, the 055 and the new 200 to continue to be very high in the UK. Our flexible finance solutions certainly put this amazing CNC technology within the reach of customers at all levels of business. Those wishing to arrange a demonstration of any of the WEEKE BHX range can call Karen Payen at HOMAG UK on 01332 856500”, concludes Simon.

SAFETY Report Into Current and Alternative Flame Retardant Technologies for Furniture and Furnishings

Cause for concern over the potential toxicity of some flame retardant chemicals has prompted the UK’s largest furniture association to investigate further. Findings from research into current and alternative flame retardant technologies used in furniture and furnishings has been released in a report entitled ‘Current and alternative flame retardants for use in upholstered furniture’ by FIRA International on behalf of the Furniture Industry Research Association. The Furniture Industry Research Association provides invaluable technical support to the entire furniture supply chain and funds projects for the benefit of the industry. “The use of flame retardants in furniture and furnishings is of great significance, especially in the UK, where fire safety of upholstery is governed by national legislation. Failure to comply with these requirements could result in prosecution, fines, and potential recall of non-compliant product already placed on the market. The potential toxicity of some flame retardants has been cause for concern which prompted the Association to investigate situation with current flame retardants and to look at possible alternatives,” explains Phil Reynolds, Director at the Furniture Industry Research Association. Consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of the presence of, and necessity for, chemicals in goods and the effects that these chemicals might have on human health and the environment. However, the same consumers would also expect that the products that they purchase are safe in terms of fire safety. The research aims to address a knowledge gap in which FR chemicals are currently used in products sold in the UK and to look for alternative technologies for when chemicals are reviewed for the

potential environmental impacts, which can result in their restriction. It answers the following key questions being asked by the furniture industry: • Why and how do we use flame retardant chemicals? • What types of flame retardant chemicals are available for use? • What flame retardant chemicals have been banned or restricted in use? • What alternative flame retardant technologies are available? Phil continued: “The flame retardant chemical industry is working hard to look for alternative chemicals and is actively involved in updating the furniture industry with progress through forums such as FRETWORK which work together with all

sectors of the supply chain to keep abreast of issues. We hope that this research and our continuing work in this area will assist the furniture and chemical industries to work together to find solutions to issues as they arise.” A summary of the findings from the project is available to download from www.fira.co.uk/publications/research. The document can be accessed free of charge by members of the Furniture Industry Research Association.

WOODWASTE Joinery Company Shaves Money Off Its Business Bills Another joinery company is saying goodbye to unnecessary heating and waste disposal bills after buying a new wood waste heater, plus a shredder, from Wood Waste Technology. Plumline Bespoke Joinery Ltd offers supplies of joinery components for both retail, domestic and convenience business sectors from its 48,000 square foot factory in Nottingham. Established over 30 years ago, Plumline Joinery is benefitting from biomass technology already, as it purchased some wood waste heaters from another manufacturer many years ago to free the business from the shackles of heating bills and waste removal costs. When one of its wood waste heaters broke recently, the management of Plumline needed to replace it, and contacted Wood Waste Technology for details about their range of heaters, as they’d heard about the quality and reliability of their products.

Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT15 wood waste heater earlier this year, to heat the far side of Plumline’s factory. Then three weeks later, the team at Plumline contacted the company again, due to Wood Waste Technology being the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. Plumline purchased a GAZ62 shredder, to help break down some of the waste wood for one of their older heaters, which struggled to burn some of the larger items of waste. MD of Plumline, Richard Beasley says: “Although we’ve had wood waste heaters in the past, this product is our first from Wood Waste Technology. We’ve been really impressed with the WT15 along with matching service level we’ve received. Moving forward we will definitely be in

touch with them regarding any further requirements for commercial heating.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’ve been delighted to help Plumline start to update their biomass heaters. We’re proud of the good reputation our heaters have developed, as every wood waste heater we’ve ever sold is still in operation today.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. DUST EXTRACTION

Energy-Saving Extraction for Routec GB Dust extraction specialists Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has recently completed a major energysaving dust extraction installation for Routec GB Ltd. Routec, based in Beverley, East Yorkshire, focuses on the development and manufacture of products for three diverse industry sectors. Working closely with many of the leading shopfitting design agencies, it produces high quality Point-ofSale retail display systems, many of which feature in internationally recognised outlets. For major producers of caravan and holiday homes, Routec manufactures a wide range of components such as worktops and frontals. And, under the Minster Doors brand, the firm manufactures a unique and popular style of

3-piece, melamine-faced kitchen doors and carcasses. Employing 50 people and operating from a 93,000 sq ft factory site, the company has a policy of constantly looking at new technologies and methods to improve efficiency. Paul Moxon, Operations Manager, says: “With the recent addition of a high-performance Biesse CNC Beam Saw, and with further new machinery planned, it was decided to replace the various individual dust extraction bag units which serve our beam saw, CNCs, edgebanders and panel saws with an externally-sited energy efficient plant, capable of extracting to a single point from all our current and future machines. The solution provided by DCS was for a dust extraction system comprising an

75kW direct-drive fanset with CARZ backpressure valve incorporated into ductwork.

Routec recently added a state-of-the-art Biesse Selco WNT 6 CNC beam saw.

DUST EXTRACTION externally-sited Schuko EcoVar 2030 modular chain filter, controlled by an ECOGATE® energy saving system. The EcoVar filter has a total airflow volume of 52,000m3/hour, with filter cleaning carried out by a dual system which employs a cleaning fan housed at the top of the filter, and mechanical shaker system at the base. Collected waste is discharged into a 15kW fan-powered closed-loop waste transfer system, which delivers directly into a large capacity boxcart. The energy-efficient system employs a 75kW direct-drive main fan unit, extracting from a total of 8 processing machines, and the main ducting system incorporates an ATEX-approved CARZ back-pressure flap valve which is designed to prevent the effect of a pressure wave and flames caused by an explosion from travelling upstream in the ductwork in which it is mounted. Installing an ECOGATE system meant that the overall dust extraction system could be designed much smaller than with conventional technology; resulting in an average volume reduction of at least 22%, and providing power savings of more than 50%. The ECOGATE system installed for Routec comprises a series of Ecogate

Dustraction Helps AJB Move On Steve Matuska reports that his nearest customer has moved away from the factory next door, seeking a bigger and better equipped one down in Corby. Steve and AJB Woodworking MD Amarjit Binji go back a long way; Dustraction have supplied all his waste extraction and disposal needs down the years as part of his building solid financial growth and a loyal and efficient workforce. However, as Amarjit explains: “We needed more space - and we also needed to change our attitude towards wood waste and to start using it properly, instead of burying it in the ground. We needed to reclassify waste as fuel instead of garbage, which we were previously hauling to landfill sites and paying to dump. So now we no longer contribute towards an environmental problem, we make use of it!” AJB have tripled the size of their factory now to a bit under 50,000 sq.ft. and at the same time reduced the actual area of the machine shop floor by about half with new digitally controlled technology and smaller footprint machines with bigger and broader capabilities. And Dustraction have replaced AJB’s cyclo filter with their latest model which while still the largest capacity in the

range is both physically smaller than their existing unit and generates an even bigger margin of spare capacity for the future. The new 4x10 cyclo filter is more environmentally efficient with emissions of only 0.2mg/m3, well within te latest Euromodel limits and now sited outside the new factory instead of inside; this move eliminates all the attendant noise problems inside the building, of course. Dustraction are unique among UK dust specialists in manufacturing their own cyclo filters plus all the support elements of today’s new installation hardware. Dustraction have been specialist dust and fume extraction engineers and manufacturers for more than 60 years. “This is all such a relief!” says Amarjit. “We now have a new 980Kw biomass boiler in an out-house alongside our new cyclofilter. This is generating all of our factory heating and hot water needs, so those costs have been eliminated from our manufacturing overhead and our reliance on gas, bottles of which were also kept inside at Oadby because of lack of space, has now been eliminated altogether. We are also now self sufficient for all our waste disposal needs - and boy, does that feel good!” says Amarjit.

AJB have tripled the size of their factory floor at the impressive new Corby site.

Building and construction, he reports, is now the principal source of AJB’s growth and so is the focus of Amarjit’s on-going expansion plans. Window and door sets together with a wide range of architectural mouldings, as well as panel-based fittings, are now the focus going forward and while waste generation has increased significantly to around 15 tonnes per week, Dustraction’s latest cyclo filter feeds the new boiler fully automatically and is easily handling the increase. The new cyclo is physically smaller than AJB’s old one, and is also the same in terms of air pressure at around 47m /sec (100,000cfm). But it is much more efficient and also now better suited to AJB’s latest environmental needs; and of course, it’s now much quieter inside the new Corby factory, according to Amarjit. He says: “I have been to Dustraction for all my extraction gear and advice for more than a decade now, ever since we started in business. I have bought not just systems but also bits and pieces of ducting and safety equipment as needed down the years and I have consulted Steve Matuska for technology advice along the way. I’m going to miss not being next door ... but I’m taking Dustraction with me to Corby as far as I’m able. “They are only a phone call away - or a mouse click on Dustraction.co.uk. And that makes me feel very much better!”, he concludes.
