ollowing the announcement of the Autumn budget Helen Hewitt, CEO, BWF, commented: “We were pleased to see some positive measures which will help smaller businesses offer apprenticeships. The £695m initiative to reduce the cost of apprenticeship training for small businesses will halve the amount they have to contribute from 10% to 5%. UK’s SMEs are pivotal to the success of the apprenticeship scheme and this should go some way to resolving the growing skills gap in our sector and to help boost productivity.

“Delivering a solution to end the UK’s housing crisis has long been on the political agenda and so we welcomed the Chancellor’s promise of a further £500m for the housing infrastructure fund to help build a further 650,000 homes. In addition, he pointed to strategic partnerships with 9 housing associations to “deliver 13,000 homes across England, up to £1bn pounds of British business bank guarantees, to support the revival of SME house builders.” On the surface, tapping into the potential of SME house builders to increase housing stock is a smart move. However, as we pointed out following the Spring statement, a successful housing strategy is not just about increasing supply. The fund now stands at £5.5bn, yet there was still no mention of an allocation to ensure that essential fire safety works required in existing social houses are paid for. So, the question still remains as to who will foot the bill. “In more good news for house building, the importance of investing in our high

streets with a £675 million Future High Streets Fund to allow councils to rejuvenate town centres could lead to benefits for members. With the Federation of Master Builders estimating last year that as many as 300,000 to 400,000 new homes alone could be created by making use of empty spaces above shops on our high streets, the Future High Streets Fund could be a further boost for residential accommodation. “The Chancellor pledged to publish a full response into the review of build out rates by Sir Oliver Letwin which concluded that large housebuilders are not engaged in ‘systematic speculative land banking’. We welcome any move to reduce bureaucracy in the planning system and look forward to the Governments response to the recommendations.

“The collapse of Carillion left many wondering what the impact on subcontractors would be and called for a review of public sector construction contracts. Some clarity came yesterday when it was announced that public private partnerships will soon be no more with PFI and PF2 contracts abolished. Existing contracts under the PFI and PF2 system

will be honoured but no new ones will be signed and a “centre of excellence” will be set up to manage the remaining contracts, worth approximately £200bn. Carmen brings ten years experience of customer services and support in the engineering industry to her new role, including working for an Alphacam distributor. Wolfgang Pöschl, Chairman of the Management Board of the Weinig Group, has asked for his resignation from his position as Chairman of the Management Board at the end of the year for personal reasons. The Supervisory Board noted this request with regret, but respects Mr. Pöschl's personal reasons. "The Supervisory Board thanks Mr. Pöschl for his excellent work. He has

guided the Weinig Group through the difficult years of the global financial crisis and created the conditions for the successful growth of the Weinig Group. A announced the appointment of Nick Corlett as CEO of BA Components and BA Clic Components with founders Brian & Kieran MacCracken moving to non-executive director roles. Nick, who joined the BA group in December 2017, brings a wealth of experience to the role having previously held senior management roles at Nobia AB and Howdens Joinery – two of Europe’s largest kitchen players. This is a key leadership appointment following the investment partnership with H2 Equity partners who took a majority shareholding in BA in August 2017. Brian McCracken officially steps down from his current role as managing director

and takes up the role of non-executive director. Kieran McCracken also steps down from his director’s active role & also takes the role of a non-executive director. Both will continue to be members of the BA board. uilding on the success of previous events, the latest AXYZ International Open House held at the company’s main UK facility in Telford was attended by a larger than expected number of existing and potential new customers. They represented a diverse range of industries in which CNC routing/cutting is an essential production requirement and for which AXYZ International remains a preferred supplier. Senior management personnel and members of the AXYZ technical team were in attendance to demonstrate the latest advances in CNC routing, cutting and engraving technology embodied in the company’s primary AXYZ and Pacer series of machines. These included the latest version of the hybrid Trident combined routing and

knife-cutting system that has enjoyed huge success by enabling AXYZ customers to diversify into new markets and create vital additional revenue streams. A particular attraction was a new waterjet cutting machine that is now being stocked and distributed in the UK by AXYZ International. It follows acquisition by the parent company in Canada of US-based WARDJet, a company that has for many years specialised in and been a pioneering influence on the evolution of waterjet cutting technology. The importance of this development was highlighted by the presence at the event of Richard Ward, cofounder of WARDJet, who provided a wealth of information on the benefits of waterjet cutting and how it complements and expands the capabilities of companies currently using traditional CNC routing/cutting systems.

alf a year before LIGNA, Weinig gave a foretaste of what’s to come at its InTech in-house exhibition. With two world premieres and many further developments, the world market leader for solid wood processing gave a highly impressive review in Tauberbischofsheim. „In Hanover, we will make another big leap with further innovations in all product areas,â€? promised CEO Wolfgang PĂśschl to over 30 trade journalists who attended the traditional Weinig press conference on the day before InTech. Automation and digitization were the main topics of the in-house exhibition. Technically, an IT cockpit demonstrated the company’s rapid expansion of its Central System Control technology. “The roll-out of this competence to the entire Group is progressing rapidly,â€? says Gregor Baumbusch, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer. In organizational terms, Weinig is further strengthening the newly created “Automa-tion & Digital Businessâ€? unit through personnel and integrative measures. In the field of planing and profiling, the 1000 visitors from 35 countries were able to experience the new Powermat 3000 for the first time at InTech. The machine sets standards with its ease of operation, new jointing technology and monitoring connectivity. The launch of the Powermat 700 Blackline at InTech also marked the start of an attractive, limited special edition. The particularly well-equipped machine is intended above all to convince customers who have not yet been able to decide to convert their production to the current Weinig generation. A world novelty that has received much attention at InTech comes from the product

unit Windows. The Conturex Artis is positioned below the previous Compact entry-level model, but has added technical value. The “RePos easy� extension system for the Powergrip clamping table, for which a patent has been filed, is outstanding in this respect. “A flexible, high-performance machine for smaller companies as an answer to the consolidation process in the window market,� said Karlheinz Moldan, head of the product unit Windows, at the press conference. Another Conturex evo-lution stage will be presented at LIGNA 2019. In addition to a total of 40 exhibits, the growing Weinig project business was particularly in the spotlight of the audience. Several examples of system solutions were shown, including the component of a complex barrel stave system and the cutting area of a parquet production line

with robot integration. Representing Weinig’s expertise in timber construction was a CLT system for the production of lamel-lae. A program of lectures that changed daily rounded off the range of products presented at InTech. The mix of live demos and practiceoriented information once again convinced the expert visitors in 2018. ames Burleigh has been making furniture for over 30 years. In 2002 he set up his eponymous limited company to design and produce a signature collection of tables, benches and stools that are visually appealing, strong and durable. Based in north London, James Burleigh and his 17 employees have created a business with a turnover of around £2m from their 7,500 sq. ft. facility. “Our business really took-off about five years ago,” explains Burleigh. He continues, “The profound change in the way offices are set-up has created a demand for more versatile furniture. Companies are looking for more flexible, adaptable solutions that reflect the culture and ethos of each specific setting.”

knocking down a wall we could realise our goal of adding a CNC to our machine portfolio and I knew it was the right decision for the future development of the business. “Having had the need for a CNC in the back of my mind for some time, I had already done quite a bit of research on suitable brands in the market. Before drawing up a short list, however, we visited the UK’s major woodworking show W16, where we were able to see all the main manufacturers under one roof. Prior to the show we’d been scanning the woodworking trade press to gather as much information as possible to aid us in the decision-making process.”

Labour intensive hand routing “As our business grew, we were doing more and more hand routing which was not only time consuming, but also was demanding ever-increasing floor space. Because of this, I’d been thinking about investing in a CNC machine for at least a couple of years; the problem was that we just didn’t have the space to fit one in.

“The opportunity came when the unit next door became available. It was always going to be a tight squeeze, but by

Seeing is believing “In the end it came down to two companies, one German and the other Italian, both of which produced quality machinery. What swung it HOMAG’s way was the professional pre-sales service and the product demonstrations they arranged for us.

“Roger Wilks, HOMAG’s area sales manager at the time, had been answering all our questions over the previous two years, yet never once did he try to pressurise us into making a purchase. As our interest piqued, he arranged for us to visit a couple of manufacturing facilities in the UK which were already using a similar CNC. “The clincher for us, however, was when we were invited out to HOMAG’s manufacturing plant in Germany. They asked us to bring some of our component parts to be machined on the BMG 311 so we could judge for ourselves the performance of the machine. ”The results were amazing. I was staggered at not only how quickly the machine could process the parts, but also the superb quality of the finished items.” Price – important, but not the governing factor “Whilst price is always a significant question when investing in such advanced machinery, for us it wasn’t the governing factor. Far more important was the durable build quality of the HOMAG BMG 311 and the fact that it could reliably produce high quality, precision parts time after time.

“Once the order had been placed, HOMAG met every deadline that was promised and the machine was installed smoothly within two days. The HOMAG engineers trained our staff on site and we also sent three of them up to Castle Donington for more comprehensive training on the woodWOP software.” A production revolution “The BMG 311 has completely amazed us. It is so incredible to see what it can do; it has entirely fulfilled our expectations. I would estimate that we are benefitting from a 30 to 40 per cent increase in capacity and although the footprint of the machine is significant, it still occupies far less space than that taken up by the old manual routers. “The CNC has reduced the number of hours we have to work, significantly decreasing the need for overtime. As a consequence, our workforce is far less stressed and we have been able to move workers to more productive areas of the shop floor.”

Helping to establish the firm when it was set up in 1993 as a UK subsidiary of the Italian Biesse Group, Steve began as Sales Manager then became Sales Director, before taking up the position of Managing Director in 2009, a post he still holds today.

S

teve’s trajectory could be said to have mirrored the fortunes of the company itself; starting with just three employees, it doubled its turnover in the first two years and now Biesse UK boasts a turnover of ÂŁ30m+ and employs 100 members of staff. As Biesse UK celebrates its milestone anniversary, Steve reveals the ‘four Ps’ that have helped him to sustain a successful business – people, products, partnerships and progress. People power Behind every successful business is a team of great people and Biesse UK is no exception. As well as Steve, another of the original three employees is still at the heart of the firm; John Adamson is now the Service Manager for the glass and stone division. This commitment and loyalty is not unusual within Biesse. Despite its global reach – the Italian parent company has 40 subsidiaries – at its heart, it’s still a family firm and operates with a ‘one team’ mentality. “We describe ourselves as ‘glocal’ – a global company operating at a local level,â€? explains Steve. But like many manufacturing firms, retaining and recruiting good talent can be a struggle. “The biggest challenge facing the engineering industry today is the skills shortage,â€? acknowledges Steve. “Technician skills are in particularly high demand, not least because technology is moving at such a rapid pace – it’s now less about mechanical competence and more about software and electronics. To fill the gap, we recruit a regular stream of junior

technicians, providing them with ongoing in-house training to enhance their skills.� Developing a team is something that Steve feels passionately about. “The thing of which I’m most proud during my 25 years at Biesse is seeing the team around me grow,� he states. “The value of our company lies not in the bricks and mortar, but in our staff. People matter.� Premium products While good people are crucial, a good offering has also been central to Biesse’s success. This is no empty statement: hundreds of their machines are still in operation in the UK more than 20 years after they were first installed. In fact, the company is so certain of the reliability of its machines that in 2011 it introduced an industry first – its Total Care five-year warranty and maintenance programme, which comes as standard on all core products. “We’re still the only company in our sector to offer this,� says Steve. “It sets us apart from our competitors and provides our customers with a clear cost of ownership.� Perfect partnerships Prioritising customers’ needs has clearly paid dividends. influencers but in the early days they were small firms, just like us. Our support has enabled them to grow and likewise, their custom has been instrumental in our success.” “Over the last 25 years, our DNA has remained the same; from day one, our focus has been on building relationships, not just selling machines,” Steve adds. “It’s a small industry and word travels fast. Despite the investment required to purchase a machine, we’ve received continuous repeat business – as companies have evolved, moved into new sectors, increased their output and diversified to meet changing consumer demands, they’ve required new solutions. Being considered a consultative supplier, we find customers continually request advice and support that they may not find elsewhere.” Prioritising progress In fact, as their customers’ demands have altered, Biesse UK has not just followed suit but has in fact helped drive industry change. “The Biesse Group is known for innovation; over 300 people are involved in our R&D activities and customers often visit our UK Technical Centre in Daventry for trials and testing of the latest technology,” says Steve. “The fact that our parent

company is Italian is also a benefit for our customers. Italian kitchen and home design is a few years in front of the UK, which means that we’re ahead of the curve domestically in terms of upcoming design trends and manufacturing methods. Over the 25 years, these insights have made an impact on the industry thanks to early adopters.” Biesse’s product range has expanded significantly in recent years. Although originally a manufacturer of Rover machining centres, Techno drilling machines and Selco beam saws that are still synonymous with Biesse today, the portfolio now includes innovations such as: Skipper, the first machine to offer simultaneous machining and drilling of two panels; a twin pusher solution available on the current range of Selco saws which delivers payback within just one year; Viet Opera R, a robotised sanding machine; and Nextstep, a flexible cutting centre which offers ‘batch one’ just in time production. No discussion around progress would be complete without mention of the 4th Industrial Revolution, however. The digital revolution has been the biggest change to happen in manufacturing during Biesse UK’s lifetime but the company has kept pace. “Our IoT platform SOPHIA connects

us to our customer’s machines 24/7 so we can proactively monitor their condition, check component parts, and take preventative action as necessary to minimise downtime and faults,” explains Steve. “It also allows customers to monitor OEE and machine performance from their smartphone or tablet, and receive an alert if anything unexpected occurs. It includes an e-parts online portal too, and we’re continually expanding its functionality. We’re only at the start of the digital journey but technology is already making things easier for our customers.” Promising plans So, what do the coming years hold for Biesse UK? “Brexit may bring some challenges, but overall, I feel the market will remain buoyant,” states Steve. “Following our acquisition of boutique advanced material machine manufacturer Uniteam, we’ve industrialised their product range and now have a great offering for composite materials, such as carbon fibres and resin – this has the potential to be an even bigger market for us than wood. With 9,200 people attending the UK’s only woodworking machinery and materials exhibition and dedicated furniture components show, organizers have seen a 4% increase in visitor numbers this year. This, along with a large number of overseas visitors from Europe and further afield, has confirmed the show’s status as being a must-attend event for the furniture design and manufacturing industry. The four-day event, which will move to hall 18, 19 and 20 in 2020, due to increased demand in stand space, saw a plethora of new products being introduced at the show.

fter many months of hard work and organisation the 2018 W Exhibition has been and gone for another 24 months. Featured on the stand was a Project 485L, a full 5 axis pod and rail CNC which was producing a “Masterwood Trophy� with intricate carvings of the world engraved along with a dedication to Birmingham. This showed the delicate and smooth movements of the 5 axis to its full potential and drew in a good crowd of viewers each time it was running.

Accompanying the 5 axis CNC was a MW1538M, a heavy duty “nesting� machine, which was running a nested “dinosaur�. The finished product became the centre of attraction, once our technicians found the correct way to assemble it, and was in great demand. The machining showed how intricate and small parts could be machined to high accuracy so that each piece slid together with the correct fix. Finally we had a Project TF100-2 CNC drilling

machine on the stand, this was fitted with a full vertical & horizontal drilling head, plus a router with automatic tool changing. Various demonstrations were run on this machine showing the full range of possible operations of drilling and routering. The most popular demonstration was the picture panels that were vee carved to look like famous landmarks or film stars, these were taken from photos and generated into machine programmes in a matter of minutes. All the demonstrations were programmed with Master 3D, Masterwood’s own software for 3, 4, and 5 axis machining, showing how quick and easy it is to turn complicated work into programmes for todays, and yesterday’s, CNC’s. With so much demand for our “dinosaurs� we decided to donate them to “Help For Heroes� who took donations and drew a winner each day. Great interest has also been placed on the Gabbiani S beam saw with Maestro Optimizer, FlexCut panel handling solution and SawSet rapid set up device for scorer alignment. ver the last 2 years the DCS Group has continued to expand production at both its Dewsbury headquarters and at the Group’s manufacturing facility at Thorp Arch, near Wetherby. In 2016, Gallito announced the launch of its FastClip Ductwork System and production of this high-quality clip-fit ductwork, and associated accessories, now occupies around half of the 3,000 sq. metres of manufacturing space; alongside the company’s facilities for fabrication of dry filter and water wash spray booths, conveying systems, drying and curing ovens, as well as design and installation of bespoke turnkey finishing systems.

scaled-down replica filter unit. Recentlyappointed Sales Director for DCS, Andy Hives, remarked: “Being able to view firsthand the advanced technologies at work inside a Schuko filter unit was quite enlightening for our potential customers at the show… not easy to achieve with a telephone enquiry, or even on a site visit.” Also on display for the first time in the UK was the new Schuko VALDI which, with a footprint of just 2m x 2m and multiple build and waste collection options, is raising the bar for compact filter design and construction. Ecogate Ltd provided W18 visitors with another practical demonstration of the

ECOGATE® ‘on-demand’ extraction optimisation technology; clearly showing how this worldwide-proven system can drastically reduce electricity consumed by an extraction system. Ecogate was first seen in the UK at W10, but the 2018 demo featured the new generation Ecogate greenBOX NXT controller which allows control of up to 32 Ecogates from a smartphone or other internet-connected device. Chris Oldfield, Ecogate’s Managing Director, commented: “As well as being able to explain the significant benefits of the Ecogate system to potential end users, W18 also gave us the chance to meet with likeminded established business owners, from allied trades, to discuss the ongoing

development of our network of authorised Ecogate ‘introducers’, resellers and installers.” The general consensus from DCS Group company directors was that W18 had lived up to all their expectations. “W18 had been a much-anticipated show,” says Andy Hives, “and we were not disappointed; it was a well-attended show, with a reassuringly positive vibe around the halls, and we were pleased with the flow of visitors to our stand – UK-based in the main, but also a significant representation from Irish woodworking manufacturers. The level of enquiries for the Group was up on 2016 – in quality as well as numbers – and we are currently in the process of contacting everyone who took the trouble

to come and chat with us.” In conclusion, DCS Managing Director, Philip Oldfield, commented: “I thought our stand looked great – a very professional presentation and a credit to our design and installation team who have worked tirelessly on this over recent months. he W18 exhibition proved to be highly successful for J & C O'Meara Woodworking Machinery Ltd. The constant stream of visitors to the stand included both existing customers and new potential customers, with a significant number of quality enquiries received during the four day show. The new CNC range from AES proved particularly popular with visitors. On show was an example of the heavy duty, high speed nesting machine the AES Extreme 1632 with a working area of 3200mm x 1,600 mm. This machine was also fitted with the HSD boring unit having 10 drills, a 12-position rotary tool changer and automatic bed cleaning. The Extreme series is available with different bed sizes and as a fully automated ‘Line’ machine. On display next to the Extreme was one of the AES Vega Evo machines which is ideal for both furniture makers and joinery companies alike. This machine is of pod and rail design, has an 8-position linear tool changer and has a dedicated double ended horizontal router head to allow mortising for door locks and recessing for hinges. Again, the machine comes complete with Alphacam CAD/CAM software along with easy to use macros written by AES for easy ‘one off’ programming for processing cabinets and doors. The AES Extreme and Vega CNC machines are designed for optimum precision, productivity and reliability. All machines come complete with Osai CNC with 17” colour TFT screen and centralised lubrication. All axes are controlled by state of the art servo motors and the machines come with automatic tool offset. Easy referencing is available with reference pistons, and all machines come equipped with Alphacam CAD/CAM operating software (Alphacam Essential 2D). The x-axis speed and y-axis speed are both 70 m/min for rapid positioning. The z-axis speed is 20 m/min and the z-axis travel is 200 mm. The router motor is 9 kW (12 hp) and the router speed is 24,000 rpm maximum. Options include increased vacuum; rotary tool changer; auto labelling system with alignment; aggregate heads; and C 18

axis head. “We knew the AES products would be well received but were still very surprised by the level of interest. On hand, we had technical representatives from AES along with our Software and Applications Engineer to discuss customer requirements. We believe there is quite a gap in the market where AES fit perfectly,” said Carl O'Meara, managing director of J & C O'Meara. The established Genisis machines also attracted attention. As always, the panel saw range proved popular, especially the Genisis XC compact machine which has a sliding table length of 1,900 mm, offers saw blade tilt of 45°, a cutting width of 1,000 mm, a powerful 7.5Hp motor and a maximum saw diameter of 400mm. The raise and lower of the blade is motorised and this machine is also available as a full size panel saw with 3200mm sliding table and 1300mm rip. Next to the Genisis XC was an example of the Genisis X2 which is a heavy-duty full-size machine having all motorised movements to the main blade and scorer and fitted with the optional digital displays to both cross cut fence and rip fence. This machine was also equipped with the control panel mounted at eye level and additional start/stop on the end of the sliding table. “The sliding table panel saw has always been one of our best-selling machines with around 150 installations of the Genisis machines throughout the UK. The machines are constructed to give long term accuracy and durability even in the busiest of workshops,” said Carl O'Meara. Also popular and on display was an example of the traditional style briquette machine. “We introduced this series of briquetting machines over 10 years ago and have many installations throughout the UK,” said Carl. “There are 15 models in the range and from our experience, we can offer good sound advice to ensure the correct model is supplied for the correct application. Briquetters can be considered an essential for any workshop looking to manage the volume of its wood waste. They convert what is otherwise a waste product into a useable

product reducing heating costs as well as landfill costs and can of course provide the source for an additional income.” Installations have included a number of machines which have been sited directly below dust extraction units hence eliminating the handling of the waste. Other installations have included shop fit companies who were looking to compact MDF dust, recycling companies processing paper, cardboard as well as shavings and even a shoe maker who wanted to compact leather dust. All the machines are equipped with a Siemens colour touch screen and have sensor in the hopper to allow the machines to work in automatic mode. “The briquette machines have always been a steady selling machine and as with all machines, it is important to match the correct machine to the correct application. A number of points to consider including volume of waste being produced, the type of material to be processed, how the waste will be introduced into a machine and how the briquettes will be used,” said Carl. Summing up, Carl added, “The W18 exhibition was by far our busiest exhibition to date. We took orders at the show and have sold machines since the show. he range of wide belt and edge sanding machines from KĂźndig UK Ltd on display at W18 proved to be exceptionally popular with visitors. Wide belt sanders were represented by both the Premium and Brilliant ranges. All KĂźndig wide belt sanders are constant passline machines, with the sanding group raising and lowering to the desired thickness rather than the workpiece. The sanders are available in working widths of 1,100 mm, 1,350 mm and 1,600 mm. The Premium range can be supplied with one to three sanding belts. The first head is a calibration roller, and in a two-head machine, such as that on display at W18, the second head was a sanding pad for joinery, with an electronic sanding pad for joinery and veneers available as an option. The KĂźndig Premium sanders have a host of options to offer even more versatility, including combinations of rollers and pads as well as the option of a cutterblock, for jointed panels where there are strong glue lines. The Brilliant range of KĂźndig sanders offer even more options. In addition to the head configurations available for the Premium range, there are additional options for electronic sanding pads for the sanding of veneers and higher sensitivity electronic sanding pads for the sanding of lacquers. Machines can be provided with multiple sanding heads as well as top and bottom sanding line. At least one of the sanding heads in a Brilliant machine is positioned at an oblique angle, usually the last one. Oblique sanding, developed by KĂźndig, has been shown by KĂźndig to produce an exceptionally high quality finish, and this is again reflected in the comments that companies using these sanders have provided to this magazine. Sanding belts are of course always supplied to end users in perfect condition, but over time tiny flaws may develop. These can be transferred to the workpiece in the same way that track lines used to appear on fax machines. By orienting the oblique sanding head at a slight angle to the other heads, so it is not perpendicular to the direction of travel, the oblique sanding method obviates 20

this problem. With surfaces such as veneers and lacquers, this can be a significant advantage. “We were joined by Mr Thomas Tenburg from KĂźndig (Germany) who performed a number of demonstrations throughout the show,â€? said KĂźndig UK's Carl O'Meara. “The part where we have a purposely damaged sanding belt and show the difference between traditional ‘straight line’ sanding which shows the defect as opposed to oblique sanding giving a perfect finish always amazes people, especially those that have a constant struggle with their existing straight line sanders.â€? Also popular were the edge sanders, represented on the stand by the Uniq model. These edge sanding machines are used both for solid wood and veneered edges. The oscillation of the abrasive is programmable to optimise the use of the sanding belt and the whole sanding unit can tilt allowing the sanding of a bevel edge whilst keeping the workpiece flat on the cast iron table. The Uniq model comes with many advantages. A heavy cast iron work table is provided on one side for solid wood sanding, and a similar table is provided for veneer sanding on the other side, the two tables being stepped in height to allow both sides to be worked simultaneously whilst using different parts of the abrasive. Motorised height adjustment and tilting of the abrasive belt is provided as standard,

therefore no adjustment of the working table is required. Mechanical inclination of up to 45° without resetting of the tables, a patented feature, is included as standard. The oscillation stroke is programmable from 10 mm to 90 mm. Dust extraction is provided by two suction caps. The belt width is 150200 mm, and the belt length is 2,000 mm. The working level is approximately 830 mm on the solid sanding side and 900 mm on the veneer sanding side. The floor space required for the Uniq model is 1,150 x 800 mm. “The edge sanders have always been met with a warm welcome into any workshop with a common report being that it ends up being one of the most used machines,â€? said Carl. “In particular, we are seeing an increase of sales of the Uniq-S which has an integrated feed system and therefore brings automation to what is otherwise a time consuming and somewhat tedious process.â€? eading woodworking machinery manufacturer, Biesse UK, has won an Elements of Innovation Award for its unique Opera R sanding machine at this year’s W Exhibition and Elements. Part of the company’s new ‘Automaction’ concept, which brings automated, interconnected production manufacturing processes to the woodworking industry, the new Opera R has been designed to offer a greater sanding consistency and a higher continuity of output on flat panels and shaker doors. Controlled via a 15-inch touch screen, the new Opera R has succeeded in reproducing sanding processes that were previously only achievable through manual methods. This has resulted in the elimination of human error, reduced production costs and increased efficiency, leading to greater productivity. he W18 show emphasised that 2018 has been a strong year for innovation within the woodworking industry. HOMAG certainly echoed this theme as it demonstrated its latest innovations in the heart of the exhibition at the NEC. Visitors to W18 witnessed the SAWTEQ B300 in action with intelliGuide, HOMAG’s interactive LED guidance system. The machine was fully operational on the stand, showcasing its impressive features as it received cutting patterns live from HOMAG’s optimiser software. Additionally, the system demonstrated its unique label generator for each panel which ensures parts are handled correctly and not lost within the production process. With complete user guidance, the machine also uses offcut management software to keep track of reusable parts as well as destacking software to tell the operator where to place each part.

Perfect edge solutions with HOMAG HOMAG’s edge banding technology is renowned for its production efficiencies and reliability. With a range that caters for all facility sizes, HOMAG presented several machines ranging from its compact EDGETEQ S-200 all the way through to its industrial EDGETEQ S-500. All machines were continuously running throughout the show, with visitors benefiting from professional demonstrations. In addition, HOMAG showcased all its edge banding sealants with EVA, P.O. and PUR glue systems as well as its airTec invisible joint system. A UK launch at W18 - MOULDTEQ M-300 Live at W18, HOMAG launched its new MOULDTEQ M-300 four-sided planer moulder to the UK market. The launch proved successful as the model received positive feedback with a high volume of enquiries. HOMAG has taken what is considered a very traditional piece of machinery and created a solution that combines state-ofthe-art technology with solid mechanical engineering. It joins HOMAG’s range of moulders which are available with 5-8 heads as required. Feedback from the show was that visitors were impressed with HOMAG’s strengthened joinery production portfolio. fantastic show and I’d like to thank everyone who placed an order with us or enquired about a product during the event. It was great to see so many first time buyers, ranging from entry level through to high end production, at the show.

Several edgebanding machines and sealants were on show including airTec for invisible joining

the SPRAYTEQ S-100, an entry level, costeffective automatic throughfeed spraying machine. The machine proved extremely popular with visitors who were looking for a way to automate their spraying processes at a very affordable price point. A high number of enquiries were taken for the spray machine which is one of many models available from HOMAG for automated painting and lacquering. Virtual autonomous production – a first at W18 A world first at W18, HOMAG presented its autonomous production capabilities with a Virtual Reality (VR) presentation. Using a VR headset, visitors were able to immerse themselves into the world of high tech production.

Providing real time updates across the whole facility, it allows manufacturers to maximise machine performance. In addition to its impressive machinery, HOMAG demonstrated its latest software which simplifies the production process. W18 operatives showcased its range of products including woodWOP 7.1 and woodWOP CAM plugin for efficient CNC production. Visitors also explored woodCAD|CAM 2018 for furnishing presentation and MagiCut optimisation software for panel processing.

N

ew owners, The Marmalade Pub Company wanted to retain the character of the original pub while developing it into a more stylish and contempory cocktail bar. Specialist contractor T6 used Interior Film, an architectural film manufactured by LG Hausys and supplied in the UK by David Clouting, to ‘wrap’ around PVC board which had been cut into strips and used to frame the mirrored areas which featured throughout the bar and seating areas. Interior Film’s flexibility ensured that even the rebated edges of the PVC frames did not present a problem, creating a seamless smooth finish. This unique self-adhesive film is quick to

40% increase in enquiries when compared with W16, a very positive customer response and a number of significant sales ensured a major success for Daltons Wadkin. In fact ‘the best show for some years’ according to sales director Andy Walsh. With colourful ‘forestry’ backdrops and trees within their stands Daltons Wadkin presented a new and unique style in order to further raise their profile as one of the leading suppliers of machinery and services within the timber sector. A selection of top brands from European and UK manufacturers were on display and being demonstrated within the ‘forest’ area which covered 324 square metres over two stands. chelling UK Ltd enjoyed yet another successful year at W18: on display were the Schelling fh4 cut-to-size saw complete with a Barbaric LCV feeding system, a Votecs shredder with industrial inline Magnet for metal, ducting by Norduct and a filter by Modesta. Visitors to the Schelling UK stand were left impressed by the Barbaric LCV feeding system, which displayed smooth, fast & easy feeding directly into the Schelling fh4. The Barbaric feeder demonstrated how it can load either single sheets in longitudinal or head cut positions straight onto the roller table of the fh4, then push the book or single sheet up against the aligners in the rollertable to then proceed automatically with the cutting pattern. The number of boards and their loading direction are easily selected from the cutting patterns created by Schelling HPO optimisation on the Schelling FH4 saw control of the machine.

The Barbaric LCV feeding system, which is renowned for offering custom-made systems built with simple yet high-quality components, also showed off simple operation and seamless linking to the Schelling Software. Other benefits of this system include low-space requirements for those with restricted space, and physical relief on production workers due to the automated nature of the feeder. How can your products make my business more productive and efficient?” “How can your software tools help me to fully exploit my significant investment in CNC equipment?” Those were just two of the questions woodworking companies asked Vero Software at the W18 trade fair. And casework manufacturers wanted to know how to bridge the gap between design and manufacture, which have been separate from each other in the past. eter Sefton runs the Peter Sefton Furniture School, which offers a wide range of woodworking and furniture making courses. The main course is 35 weeks long and covers hand skills, machining and a lot more, they also offer specialist short courses and three day machining courses on using bandsaws, planer thicknessers, table saws and spindle moulders all carried out on a range of machinery from the FELDER GROUP. For the last 15 years Peter has been using machines from the FELDER GROUP and is still using three of his original machines today. We swap the blade 2 or 3 times a day: A little narrow blade for tight curved work, a wider blade for ripping, a medium blade for making tenons and dovetails. As the school became more popular, a queue for the A3-41 started to develop so I decided to add another planer, taking the step up to the FELDER A 741. The quick change knives on both the planers are easy to set up; I can teach someone in 15 minutes and be confident that they could go back to their own workshop and set it up. Regarding his panel saw, Peter said, “The Hammer K3 did well and I had that for 12 years but we were ready for an upgrade. The bigger and more robust FELDER K 700 has allowed us to do such accurate work - fine cutting for inlays/veneers and a selection of different tasks that I can show the students, but most importantly is the increased safety.” Peter then went on to say, “I wouldn’t have

ounded in 1978, Daval Furniture is an innovator in the creation of luxury fitted furniture for homes. Located in the picturesque landscape of Yorkshire, Daval is a family owned business with British furniture design and manufacture at its heart.

“We were handling raw materials with a standard forklift truck, placing full size panels onto the bed of a CNC. When you multiply this activity by the number of machines we have, it’s clear to see that this process is incredibly time consuming and error prone.

The business has enjoyed considerable success, however future growth was being threatened by the changing cost base for the industry as Daval’s managing director, Simon Bodsworth explains, “Over the last few years we have seen costs such as labour, raw materials, transport and energy rise dramatically.

“The technology from a cut, edge, drill scenario has changed significantly. You can now produce made to order products on a much more volume orientated scale and this led us to the decision to invest in machinery and software that would help us achieve our future plans.”

“These costs are mainly out of our control and have become disproportionate within our business model. Consequently, we have had to look at changing our approach to adapt to these significant cost rises.” Thirty per cent rise in sales “At the same time, rapid growth in our sales – 30 per cent in the last twelve months alone – put pressure on our production capacity. Our process of cellular based manufacturing on CNCs just didn’t have the capacity to grow at the necessary pace.

Finding the right partner “We’ve been a fan of HOMAG machinery for over 20 years. With such a major investment, however, we decided it was vitally important to carry out a thorough evaluation to ensure we partnered with the company that was right for the future of our business. “So in 2016 we began the process of seeing what equipment was out in the market. Our first port of call was Ligna where we were able to get a good overview of the market. Following this, we visited a number of

A

woodworking company wasn’t phased when an intricate eight-metre part was too big for its machine tool – it simply built a door in the side of the machining centre and supported the piece outside by mounting it on a cradle. Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri programmed its CMS Ares 6018 with Alphacam to cut authentic motifs into carved pillars for a Viking museum at Lejre, near the city of Roskilde in Denmark. The Land of the Legends is a 106-acre archaeological open-air museum, recreating typical Viking buildings showing how the warriors lived between 900 and 1,300 years ago. A project is underway to rebuild one of those buildings, the King’s Hall, measuring 60 metres x 12 metres, and ten metres high, containing four solid oak pillars to hold the roof. The pillars are

each eight-metres tall, decorated with intricate and complex motifs from Nordic mythology, showing the Nordic Gods Thor, Odin, Frej and Freja, depicting how the Vikings saw and adored their Gods. The contract to cut the motifs into the pillars was awarded to Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri, a small company with just two employees, based at Svendborg in Denmark. Managing Director Niels Bystrup knew that even though the designs were extremely intricate, he would be able to program his machine tool with Alphacam to easily and successfully cut the solid Oak. But there was an initial physical hurdle to overcome before the Alphacam programs could start cutting wood. While each pillar weighs 1000 kg and has a diameter of 450 mm, it was the eight-metre length that caused an issue, as the 5-axis CMS Ares with its Fanuc 31B controller is only

6000 mm long. He made a door on the left side of the machine, and the part rests on a cradle outside. Without the door, the part could not have been loaded. “The machining area in X was sufficient to have the area to be worked on inside in one go,” says Niels Bystrup. “But as our CMS Ares doesn’t have a rotary table, the upper half of the pillar was machined first, then it was turned 180 degrees to machine the other half.” Prior to the job beginning, Neil Bystrup was in close contact with Alphacam’s Danish reseller, Østjydsk CAD-CAM. Karl Erik Andersen, from Østjydsk CAD-CAM, says: “We worked extensively with Niels Bystrup on test programs, and loading the ‘heavy’ solids, as the program file size for just half a pillar was 250 Mb. Jobs like this must be considered carefully, as there couldn’t be any trials. It had to be right first time, as there were only four pieces of material for the finished pillars. We couldn’t afford any mistakes.” The pillars are made of “’Navy Oak,’ from trees planted 200 years ago, when Britain took over the Danish Navy. “At that time, the King of Denmark ordered new trees to be planted, so they could build a new Navy. Now the trees are ready, but, of course, ships aren’t built of Oak any more. So the trees are used for other purposes.” The decorations were created by the museum, based on original designs found in graves and excavations in Denmark and Norway. Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri received them as STEP files, which were imported into Alphacam. The designs sank into the wood to a depth of 25 mm, and were machined with small ball nose

two and a half years ago, Niels Bystrup works with it on wood, plastic and Sika Block. As well as the CMS Ares, the company also programs a recently acquired Fanuc Robodrill with Alphacam, mainly for machining smaller components. sers of Alphacam 2019 R1 will find that a completely redesigned and compact nesting interface provides a streamlined way to quickly create and deploy nest projects, giving greater flexibility and productivity. Drag-and-drop support for manually nested parts means it is easier for programmers to begin the process of manual nesting. “This is just one of many features throughout the latest release which provides greater control with fewer clicks,” says Brand Manager Hector Henry. “Again, it enhances productivity.” Another process which reduces the number of steps, is the ability to automatically align a part to a neighbouring angled part on the nest. Parts are matched in this way by simply selecting which elements must be aligned.

An update to the Automation Manager does away with the need to create a CSV file when producing assemblies, which he says is a major plus for any manufacturer. “Given a part thickness, the Auto Associate Material function automatically assigns a material from the database. It compares the thickness…solid or otherwise…and

selects an appropriate material within a set tolerance.” When importing CSV files for subcomponents, the main parametric job can now pass detailed information to subcomponents in an assembly. This means complex and parametric objects can now be fully controlled with complete selection of parameters, static and dynamic hardware, fittings and other data. Automation jobs now benefit from the new Tool Ordering utility. “This allows the user to completely re-assign the tool sequence in a job, giving freedom of execution, optimisation and better control. When importing a part to a job in Automation Manager, the system interrogates the geometries – including solid – to find the part sizes (X, Y, Z), which can then be used throughout the interface, leading to greater clarity, better reporting,

and enhanced automation. Reporting is enhanced with the ability to query and display additional part information. “This is managed by interrogating the incoming CAD file to determine parameters such as the X, Y and Z dimensions.” The User Interface includes two powerful enhancements: the first allows a selection window to be created, selecting anything it touches or includes; and users can now resize the preview window in their NC code, to fully show the posted code, regardless of how long or complex it is. Moving on to two enhancements for 3D Machining – firstly, Hector Henry says a much-improved Automatic Collision Detection algorithm avoids gouging nonmachined faces and surfaces in the Select Solid Faces function. “It also allows for full control over which faces should stay untouched. This intelligent algorithm can even automatically create 2D boundaries for the end user. Overall, this enhancement improves machining functionality and gives greater productivity through intelligent boundary creation.”

Secondly, he says Cylindrical-Parallel Machining has been improved to the extent that optimised toolpaths can now be created for parts under conditions which were previously impossible. “This update greatly enhances functionality in previous releases, by including complex geometries, opening new possibilities for 4-axis machining.” Enhancing the interface in the Sawing module now allows users to efficiently select solid faces for sawing, from a solid model. “Applying a sawing strategy directly to a solid face considerably improves productivity, with greater reliability.” Parametric Rules now have a new ‘Else’ condition, which provides a complete ‘If… Then…Else’ structure. “It means complex rules can be synthesized into significantly shorter statements, providing four major benefits: ease of use, ease of maintenance, reliability and productivity.”

allito Limited, a member of the DCS Group of companies, has recently installed a comprehensive product finishing facility for the UK’s premier manufacturer and supplier of themed props and accessories. Based at Thorp Arch Estate, near Wetherby in West Yorkshire, Event Prop Hire provides a (literally) incredible range of goods on hire for any kind of themed event; ranging from indulgent private parties, to glamorous corporate events, new product launches, and have even adorned the sets of ‘Strictly’ and ‘XFactor’. Event Prop Hire was founded 15 years ago by co-directors Matthew East and Rosie Ellis – the duo had studied together through university, graduating in 2002 with degrees in Entertainment Design and dreams of setting up in business designing, building and selling props. Within a couple of years, those dreams had become reality and the business, originally called Scenecraft, was operating from a 150 sq. metre workshop and selling props ranging from alien costumes to giant sets of teeth. with the events industry and, from early on, it became apparent that the themed props they were being commissioned to build would generally be used just once… and then scrapped. It occurred to Matt and Rosie that it would be much more cost-effective for their clients if they were able to hire the props, certainly much less wasteful, and potentially a much more lucrative business model. of the business to larger premises, employment for an extra pair of hands, a company van… and a reincarnation of the business as Event Prop Hire. Event Prop Hire rapidly acquired a reputation for exceptional quality and service within the industry and, over the next few years, as the company’s client base grew exponentially, Event Prop Hire grew to meet the demand. In 2014, with its head office and manufacturing facility located on the outskirts of York, the company had accumulated tens of thousands of stock items which were now being stored in rented warehouse buildings at Thorp Arch Estate. With around 60 employees operating across the two Yorkshire sites, the company took another giant step forward by opening a showroom in The City of London, close to Aldgate Tube Station; giving Event Prop Hire a shop window on the doorstep of three quarters of the company’s expanding clientele. In 2017, with turnover now exceeding £3 million, this continued growth had in no small way been due to the company’s commitment to quality and service, and in order to sustain this ethos the decision was taken to streamline the business by bringing admin, manufacturing and storage under one roof.

The availability of one vast space at Thorp Arch provided the obvious solution, and the company’s new headquarters is spread across some 13,500 sq. metres, storing thousands of props and housing a brand new, custom-built manufacturing facility. Before this major step could be accomplished successfully, a plan to deliver a smooth transition of production from York to Thorp Arch had to be put in place, with the assurance that the new manufacturing facility was fit and ready from the get go to create new bespoke props, repair and maintain existing stock, and to constantly prepare items for dispatch to an event in ‘as good as new’ condition. Event Prop Hire now has state-of-the art production facilities including 3-D scanning, 3 and 4-axis CNC machining, as well as a design and print studio – and all of these facilities are enjoyed to the full by a team of passionate professionals, each skilled in different areas of expertise. In setting up the new production facility, the directors recognised that investment in the best available plant and equipment was a major contributory factor in their quest for unrivalled quality of finish. And, when it came to procuring design and construction of new enclosures for the finishing department, a

Google search for prospective suppliers turned up an ace within half a mile of their new premises, on the same industrial estate… Gallito Limited has been involved with the design, manufacture, and installation of quality spray booths and paint finishing systems for over 40 years, and has itself expanded rapidly since becoming part of the DCS Group of companies. a capability that extends from standard spray booths and ovens, through to turnkey finishing systems. Gallito’s Sales Manager, Mike Lodge, handled the initial enquiry and, following site visits and discussions with Matt to assess the requirements, was able to present a proposal to Event Prop Hire which fully met the company’s needs for a range of different sized enclosures; providing a series of clean, safe areas for carrying out a multiplicity of manufacturing and maintenance tasks – but all with the same common requirement for efficient and effective extraction of potentially harmful fumes and particulates. “Matthew knew what he wanted to achieve from the installation of new spray booths and enclosures, and it was then our job to interpret those requirements and come up with a design that fulfilled all his needs, and provided an extraction capacity that would cope effectively and easily with the many and varied demands of the manufacturing and maintenance departments,” Mike Lodge explained. Before commencing on any design work for the new facility Gallito undertook 3-dimensional scanning at the warehouse and, utilising this scanned data within their professional engineering design software, the team’s designers created a virtual 3D environment in which to develop a

design layout for the structure – ensuring precision in manufacture and guaranteeing a perfect fit when the enclosures were installed on site.

sq. metres; with one entire wall fitted with filter media, and extraction being provided by four separate 7.5kW fans – capable of extracting over 90,000m3 of air per hour from this large open space.

The result is an imposing two-storey construction, providing a total floor space of around 800 sq. metres, with 9 individual enclosures, utilising 12 separate belt-driven axial fans, sized at 710mm and 813mm diameter, from 5.5kW to 7.5kW, and capable of extracting a combined total of over 280,000m3 of air per hour. In addition to a ventilated paint storeroom, there are 7 enclosures on the ground floor; including four identical enclosures, used primarily for sanding operations, sized at 4.5m x 4.5m x 3m high, each with a dedicated extraction fan, double-width sliding access doors, and a series of interconnecting personnel doors to permit unrestricted access from one room to another. On the opposite side of a 20m long covered access corridor are two further enclosures; each with a floor area of around 40 sq. metres and vertical filtration area of approximately 12 sq. metres, again serviced by independent extraction fans – one 5.5kW and the other 7.5kW, and capable of extracting over 50, 000m3 per hour.

“This has been an interesting and novel project for our team at Gallito,” commented Mike Lodge, "and you can't help but smile when you walk through the warehouse at Event Prop Hire. The close geographical location of the two businesses ensured excellent communication and collaboration throughout the design and construction process and, with our manufacturing plant on-hand just round the corner, any minor design modifications requested by EPH were executed swiftly and efficiently.”

With a personnel access door directly into the paint store, and two further doublewidth sliding doors providing access to 112 sq. metres of workable floor space, this enclosure provides filtration across an area of around 45

The business now occupies almost 3,000 sq. metres of manufacturing space at Thorp Arch, and traditional metalworking skills are supported by a plethora of automated machinery, including advanced laser cutting technology. Gallito has the capacity to manufacture high quality bespoke spray booths and enclosures, in a range of materials, to just about any shape and size, employing dry filter or water wash filtration systems, along with a standard range of booths, paint kitchens, drying ovens, associated conveying equipment and ancillaries. The machines all feature automatic thickness adjustment from 3 to 200mm and a constant working height (900mm) via adjustment of the upper frame of the machine. Workpieces are fed into the machine on a variable speed (3-15m/min), high quality multi-ply conveyor belt. The parts are guided through the machine with spring-loaded rubberised pressure rollers positioned close to the sanding heads. The SANDTEQ 200/300 models offer a choice of four heads which can be specified in single and twin head configurations to give seven different machine combinations.
