NEWS Weinig Group Makes Major Investment In Holz-Her Production Facility The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on the Holz-Her production facility in Voitsberg, Austria, signaled the start of an ambitious forward-looking project. The 22,000 m2 site of the specialist in machines and systems for panel processing is being developed with a 1,000 m2 extension specifically designed for the planned new CNC milling machine for framework processing. The new hall will exclusive-ly accommodate new and pioneering machine technology for the machining of large steel structural components. Holz-Her's intention is to make its production even more efficient and flexible. The project was approved by Weinig's Supervisory Board as part of a series of planned investments. “Our decision is a deliberate response to the growing importance and huge potential of the Business Unit Panel Processing,” says Chairman of the Supervisory Board Thomas Bach. HolzHer has been part of the Weinig Group since 2010. The innovative company can look back on an ex-tremely successful last few years. Turnover has risen by 20 percent over the last two years alone. Just recently, Holz-Her

attracted massive attention at the world's leading trade fair LIGNA with its Nextec technology for furniture produc-tion. As a result of the strong growth, production capacity in Voitsberg has al-ready doubled over the last two years. The investment of 4.5 million euros is part of a group-wide investment package of more than 15 million euros and will secure the future, long-term growth of the company. To reflect the significance of the project for the future of the company, the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by both Weinig's Supervisory Board, led by Chairman Thomas Bach, and Weinig’s Management Board, represented by CEO Wolfgang Pöschl, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Gregor Baumbusch and Chief Financial Officer Gerald Schmidt. Together with Holz-Her Managing Director Frank Epple and the Managing Director of the Voitsberg production facil-ity Harald Steiner, the start of the construction project was marked with a small ceremony attended by all personnel. The investment will also have a positive impact on the employment situation at the

Holz-Her production site. Currently, 300 personnel are employed in Austria. Thanks to the further expansion of sales activities, the extension of the product portfolio with regard to CNC processing centers, the development of the saw/storage combination segment, the further evolution of edge banders for in-dustrial applications and the extension of the factory, Frank Epple anticipates further requirements for qualified personnel. “Holz-Her, like the entire Weinig Group, is on a strong trajectory,” says Wolfgang Pöschl. Group orders to the end of April showed 17% growth while revenues rose by as much as 21%. The Wei-nig Group is very confident of achieving the order inflow of 471 million euros tar-geted for 2017. Owing to the excellent business growth, the group’s global per-sonnel will increase to more than 2,100 in 2017.

Happy Torx Samac is adding a whole new range of Performance Plus TORX head screws to its Performance Range offering improved drive, reduced cam out and stripping, and easier driving alignment. Samac’s Performance Plus TORX screws are the ultimate in fast, precision fastening with six points of contact to maximise transmission of torque when driving the screw. Easy to align, more precise, and with less cam-out, they have been designed to combine fast and easy use with improved drive. Like all of Samac’s Performance Range screws, the new Torx head version has been designed from tip to head with features that make it easy, quick, and reliable to use on site. A specially-designed milling thread positioned above the standard course thread will help prevent wood splitting while six self-countersinking ribs on the underside of the head ensures a consistently neat, flush finish. The thread is partially serrated, giving the screw a combined sawing and cutting action for

smooth and efficient driving, while the type 17 cut point improves drive and reduces splitting without the need for pre-drilling The high contact Torx head design means that less pressure is required to keep the screwdriver tip in the head recess, drastically reducing the chances of cam out. Because the transmission of the driving force is radial rather than axial, less driving force is needed, making them easier to drive by hand or giving more fixings per battery charge. The new Performance Plus TORX head screws will be available in a wide variety of sizes up to 300mm in 8mm gauge to tackle even the most demanding jobs like structural timber projects, roofing and timber frame building. Every box comes with a free Torx bit. The Samac Performance Plus TORX Head Screw is available from builders, timber & roofing merchants. Users can call Samac on 01268 764488 to find their nearest stockist.

Samac is a specialist nails, screws and fixings distributor based in Essex with one of the widest ranges of products in the trade, most on 48 hour delivery. Established since 2004, Samac supplies builders, timber, roofing & fencing merchants with a comprehensive range of products that is now so much more than the nails for which the company first became known.

IDS Unveils A New £1m Distribution Centre For London and The South East A £1million+ investment in a new, purposebuilt distribution centre in Thurrock is the first phase of a strategic development plan from International Decorative Surfaces (IDS), to further strengthen the company’s position in south east England. The new depot, which opened in June, is situated at Logistics City in Thurrock, enabling the surface materials distribution specialist to better support growing markets in London and surrounding areas with an impressive 792,000 cubic feet of warehousing space. The Thurrock site represents an 82% increase in stockholding space and a 54% increase in the number of SKUs with over £1million worth of key products in worktops, laminates, solid surface, panel products, flooring and wall panelling. Says John Bagshaw, Managing Director of IDS: “This strategic undertaking in the south east demonstrates our ongoing

commitment to growing by helping our customers and suppliers grow. Our surface portfolio is constantly developing, bringing the latest product innovations to market, and it’s really important to us that we continue to meet and exceed customer expectations. “This new facility at Thurrock is key to providing the high level of service our customers expect, with a wider depth and breadth of products than we’ve ever been able to stock before to service the south east.” The new Thurrock warehouse investment comes on the back of a £1million spend to increase capacity at its Woodford, Manchester, Ely and Nuneaton branches, to expand the Leeds and Stoke branches, and with work also planned for the Gateshead site. In addition, IDS has recently invested £100,000 into upgrading the showrooms and offices at Rosyth and Gateshead, and

Daltons Wadkin Report Open Day Success Daltons Wadkin Wood & Panel Machinery Show held 3 to 5 October in Nottingham was “the biggest and most successful” according to director and show organiser Alex Dalton. “I believe we have the strongest machinery portfolio of any woodworking machinery suppliers in the UK and Ireland. Our regular in-house shows are an excellent opportunity to showcase our range of panel and solid wood processing machines. This year we had more visitors and more orders taken than at any of our previous shows”, said Alex. With some twenty-five machines available for display and demonstration in their Nottingham showrooms the exhibition represented wide coverage of their extensive product range from classical machines to CNC. Visitors travelled from all parts of the UK and were able to view live demonstrations on Salvador straight and angle programmable crosscutting systems, CEHISA edgebanders, Kuper planer/moulders, Kimla CNC routers, Elcon vertical and Altendorf sliding table panel saws, a selection of Wadkin classical machines and a new Stenner ST100RS band resaw. By the end of the show the company had chalked up significant orders for a number

of their major brands including Kimla, CEHISA, Stenner, Altendorf, Kuper and Wadkin, providing a major boost to their autumn sales pitch. Alex Dalton was pleased with both the results and the effort put in by the sales and demonstration teams. “We really pushed the boat out this year”, said Alex. “The display, the extensive range of machines on show and the opportunity to meet so many

existing and new customers was everything we had hoped for. I would like to thank all visitors to the show in making it such a success. For anyone that did not manage to make it, our showroom doors remain open for working demonstrations and expert advice.”

EVENTS

One Year To Go With over 80% of exhibition space already sold, a whole host of new exhibitors signed up and a fresh new look to boot, Elements and the W Exhibition (formerly known as W18) are back for 2018 and stronger than ever. Following last year’s record breaking show, which saw more than 8,800 people attend the UK’s only woodworking and machinery event, the W Exhibition and dedicated components show, Elements, will once again open its doors at the NEC from the 30th September – 3rd October 2018. With only 12 months to go, event organisers, Montgomery, are continuing to strengthen partnerships and develop the W Exhibition and Elements further by exploring new avenues in a bid to represent the whole industry and emulate the success of 2016. Lisa Campagnola, Event Director of the W Exhibition and Elements says, “We’ve listened to what the industry want and in return, stand numbers have increased for 2018. Elements has seen the biggest number of new exhibitors sign up following its debut last year, with the likes of Alpi, Quick Sharp, Pro

Box Systems and Awuko Abrasives confirming their attendance. The W Exhibition has also seen an influx of new companies take stands, reasoning the dedicated components show running alongside it and widening visitor pool, as major factors for exhibiting next year.” The focus will also remain on the importance of apprenticeships and education within the furniture manufacturing industry, with the W Challenge making a return for 2018. Lisa explains, “We introduced three interactive features to the show last year: The Innovation Zone, Best Practice Zone and the W Challenge. Each feature offered visitors a unique insight into different areas of the industry. The live competition; the W Challenge saw four college students from across the UK compete to be crowned the winner which helped to raise awareness of the importance of young talent in the industry and the growing skills gap this sector is facing. We are once again working with Didac Training College to run a similar competition and continuing to work with the

BWF and our official charity partner, Help for Heroes for the 2018 event.” Lisa adds, “By working with the industry to create the W Exhibition and Elements, we have the ability to create a show that holds real value. As a combined force, both shows offer visitors an opportunity to see a wide range of products, whilst offering a platform to witness first-hand the innovations and advances the industry has to offer. We want to create a lasting legacy and by working closely with industry professionals and our visitors, we’re confident the W Exhibition and Elements will continue to be a driving force in the furniture industry.” The W Exhibition and Elements will be taking place from the 30th September – 3rd October at the NEC Birmingham.

PROFILE Combilift Unveils New Electric Multi-Directional Counterbalance 4,000 Kg Capacity Forklift Truck Combilift has unveiled a new all-wheel drive, electric, multi-directional counterbalance forklift truck, with a lift capacity of 4,000 kg. The Combi-CBE 4t forklift was launched by Managing Director Martin McVicar at the recent GIS show at the Piacenza Expo centre in Italy. The innovative Combi-CBE 4t is based on the original and very successful CombiCB which Combilift launched in 2008, and until now the electric models in the range have been available with a maximum lift capacity of 3,000kg. The all-wheel drive Combi-CBE 4t, coupled with large rubber tyres, allows the truck to work effortlessly indoors and out and on all types of terrains. Its versatility enables it to offload from HGVs, bring product directly to racking or free stacking areas, as well as to feed production lines. Combined with load sensing steering and no fumes, this makes it ideal for indoor warehouse operations. Driver convenience and comfort was a priority during the design phase. Side shift comes as standard and an integrated hydraulic fork positioner is an option to facilitate the handling of various sized

loads, without operators having to leave the cab to manually adjust the forks. Quick service and maintenance procedures with easy access to the tried and tested components avoid any inconvenience for

the end user. Speaking at the launch, Martin McVicar revealed that the new model was developed in response to a specific customer request for heavier lift capacities on electric forklift trucks. “As a customer focused company, Combilift strives to provide our dealers and customers with machines that not only do the job but also save them money. This forklift is particularly interesting for the Italian market where 93% of forklifts are electric. The initial enquiry came to us in 2015 and this week we are delighted to launch the Combi-CBE 4t in Italy. The launch of this forklift also underlines the continued expansion of our product range.” After the exhibition, Combilift’s Italian dealer Euro Assistance will deliver the Combi-CBE to the customer, Mirrione Legnami, a leading timber supplier in Sicily and a new customer for Combilift.

INSTALLATION Kimla For Formica Formica Group Invest in CNC Router from Daltons Wadkin Formica Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of High Pressure Laminate (HPL), has invested in a Kimla CNC router as part the expansion of the groups fabrication support unit (FSU) in North Shields. Launched in 1955, the FSU is still expanding and recent investment with Daltons Wadkin has created a state of the art facility for testing, trouble shooting and training on Formicas extensive range of innovative surfacing products. FSU Manager, Paul Sisterson, has been at Formica Group Europe for almost 20 years and headed up the CNC project. Paul has helped countless customers around Europe with training and product support, continually pushing the boundaries with Formica® laminate. ‘The Kimla gives us the ability to be on the same level as our customers who purchase and use our products on similar CNC machines. We needed a versatile and reliable machine that would fit within our workshop space’, comments Paul. ‘Daltons Wadkin took time to understand our requirements and carried out demonstrations at existing Kimla customers and in their showroom. We

could buy with confidence knowing that it was the right machine for the job’. Daltons Wadkin has seen considerable growth in Kimla CNC router sales. Company director, Alex Dalton, worked closely with Formica on the project. ‘Formica Group are typical of the type of customer we see investing in Kimla CNC machines, demanding well engineered technology that is reliable and easy to use. Kimla delivers on every level. We have expanded our service team with dedicated CNC engineers and technical support staff to give customers immediate response when required’. The Kimla BPF2131 CNC router supplied included a working area of 2100 x 3100mm to accommodate Formica’s largest standard panel size, a 9 kW router head, automatic tool changer and PC-CAM software suite including CAD, CAM and nesting functions. ‘This is a very popular specification for us’, comments Alex. ‘Crucially the Kimla has a compact working foot print to deliver large working capacities without taking valuable workshop space. The software is powerful, but easy to use and can integrate into existing workflows if customers are already using third party

CAD/CAM products such as Cabinet Vision, AutoCAD or Solid Works etc’. Equipped with Dynamic Vector Analysis Control (DVA), the Kimla processes up to 15,000 lines of NC code per second for smooth regulation of the feed speed. This, in combination with Kimla’s exceptional build quality, delivers high performance results not only on wood based products, but also on more unforgiving materials such as laminates, plastics, composites and non-ferrous metals. FSU are now in a position to have enduser fabricators of all levels attend training courses. One day beginner courses look at various Formica® products including HPL, ColorCore®, DecoMetal® and Formica Ligna® focusing on handling, storage, fabrication, substrates, adhesives and maintenance. Advanced two day courses are aimed at more experienced fabricators covering preconditioning, fire performance and troubleshooting. The addition of the Kimla CNC enables Paul and his team to replicate customers workshop conditions. ‘We can now talk to fabricators on issues they may have when using our products,’ says Paul. ‘It helps us with fault finding and problem solving. It also gives us the ability to produce repetitive works such as sample requirements which go out to customers on a daily basis. Using the Kimla we have been able to produce unique art work projects which are now on display in our new European HQ at North Shields. It has opened our eyes to how we can use our products for future projects’.

The Benefits Of HOMAG’s Invisible Joint Edge Banding Technology Are Clear To See Advancements in technology have driven the level of expectation of manufacturing quality, higher and higher. The furniture industry is no exception and one technology in particular leading the way for finish excellence is the now well-known edge banding technology which is ‘zerojoints’. Representing high quality, premium value and a modern finish, ‘invisible joint’ is the revolutionary edge banding solution that's taken the market by storm. With over 55 years’ experience in pioneering edge banding technology, HOMAG is well placed to explain the core values of ‘zero-joints’ and the technology behind it. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing Director at HOMAG UK explains, “The immense knowledge and experience that the HOMAG Group has accumulated over the decades, enables us to provide the right edge banding solution for all levels of manufacturing.”

airTec Technology – invisible joints HOMAG were the first to introduce airTec technology to the industry. Since its initial debut in 2012, this invisible innovation is now available throughout HOMAG’s full range of edge banders, bringing high end, top quality edges within reach of even the smallest of manufacturer. The company’s airTec technology is a clean, cost-effective bonding method which results in perfectly crafted products where joints are no longer visible. The airTec system uses a combination of technically engineered hot air and special edge material to produce the ultimate invisible joint. The special edge material consists of a hard décor layer backed with a meltable functional layer. This layer is activated by the hot air and then securely pressed onto the panel edge without the need for glue. HOMAG has made this

technology available across its full range of edge banders meaning that businesses of any manufacturing size can benefit from ‘zero-joint’ technology. For example, Ambition 1220 and 1230 airTec models are the perfect entry level edge banders that offer an ideal solution for the bespoke craftsman. These affordable models provide a high degree of automation and come equipped with a premilling unit for optimum edge joint quality, HOMAG’s in-house manufactured airTec system, end snipping saws front and rear, a trimming unit with DFC tool technology for maximum dust extraction, a contour trimming unit for optimum corner rounding as well as scraping and buffering units for the perfect finish. The machine is also supplied with a conventional glue pot making it a great all round model. For small to medium sized businesses, the Ambition 1440 airTec offers a higher

degree of flexibility and can be optimised according to customers’ requirements. The basic model has a joint trimming unit, an exact gluing unit, an end trimming unit, a trimming unit and a twomotor corner rounding unit. It also offers lower energy costs with ecoPlus and is controlled with powerTouch using the 21.5” widescreen multi-touch monitor. Alternatively, for higher outputs the Ambition 1650 offers both airTec and Quickmelt gluing (EVA & PUR). In standard trim, the 1650 offers a variable feed speed from 8 - 18m/min, with an option to increase feed rates up to 20m/min. As well as a heavy duty premilling unit for panels up to 60mm in thickness, the Ambition 1650 airTec boasts a two-motor end-snipping unit, top and bottom trimming units, a servo controlled corner rounding unit, with automatically selectable profile and surface scraping units for the perfect finish. The Ambition 1650 FC provides versatile, high quality edge banding on a consistent basis. For the larger manufacturers, HOMAG offers its top of the range Ambition 2000 series of edge banders. Designed especially for the demands of industrial level manufacturing, this collection of high speed workhorses can achieve feed speeds between 16 – 32 m/min. Available with either airTec’s ‘zero-joint’ technology for invisible joints or PUR adhesive for high performance

applications, the Ambition 2000 series offer enormous flexibility. With its energysaving and environmentally friendly benefits, the range offers an impressive array of features to enhance the efficiency of the production facility.

laserTec - high volume invisible edging at high speed Laser technology enables manufacturers to produce invisible joints at high volumes. Instead of the afore mentioned airTec process, a laser fuses the edging tape to the panel at speeds of up to 60m/min and delivers perfect quality every time. Compared to conventional glue based methods, HOMAG laserTec offers immense benefits and enormously simplifies the edging process. It is a highly effective solution that eliminates unproductive waiting periods and set-up work for colour changes, thus delivering more parts per unit of time. Separate settings for glue quantity and temperature are no longer required, nor are entries for different materials such as chipboard or MDF. The laserTec system not only produces an invisible surface-to-edge transition, but the bond achieved between the edge and the panel is considerably stronger and more robust than conventional techniques. Laser technology allows you to achieve consistent production quality and to

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

reduce the staff costs associated with postprocessing and finishing. In comparison to conventional hot-melt glue technology on throughfeed machines, laserTec delivers energy savings of over 40 per cent, as there is no longer any heating up period required, so no energy is used without productivity. Simon Brooks concludes, “HOMAG offers a comprehensive range of edge banding machinery. From entry level models all the way through to high end volume production lines, there is really no question that we have a solution for every need. If you’re looking for consistently high edge banding quality day-in, day-out, there is no better place to start than with HOMAG UK. Our experienced team is always on hand to provide answers to your questions and to discuss our flexible finance packages, if required.”

PROFILE Maestro - The High Level Complete Solution For Coating Door And Window Frames The frame production market demands ever increasing flexibility. The introduction of a versatile, reliable robotised system like Maestro from Superfici simplifies small batch management. It also guarantees the continuity typical of robotised solutions. Add to this the possibility of fast colour changes with reduced coating wastage, and it is clear how a robotised system is perfectly suited even for production with custom finishes, managing numerous different small orders. The robot can be used with pneumatic or electrostatic application systems and easily adapts to any coating requirements. Main benefits of a Maestro anthropomorphic robot spraying line: - reduced production times - uniform and continuous application quality, which is difficult to achieve manually. - improved control of product quantity and, therefore, savings in terms of paint/coating consumption. - easy, flexible robot control. The spraying robot fits perfectly in coating lines that can, for example, include rotation of workpieces on the conveyor system to allow spraying of both faces, or the use of two opposite robots, where this is justified by the capacity required. The robot is often used in lines complete with drying systems, even sophisticated ones with microwave technology that considerably shorten production cycles, further extending the flexibility of the entire plant. Maestro, Technology Highlights:

WIDE SPRAYING AREA The system was specially designed for spraying large items, typically door and window frames. Working area size: 3000 x 3000 mm. If necessary extendable by adding a 7th axis.

KAWASAKI ANTHROPOMORPHIC ROBOT The Kawasaki high-performance anthropomorphic robot is perfectly integrated in the system, guaranteeing build quality and reliability. The robot has 6 axes, which can be extended up to 11 if necessary.

OPTIMISED SPRAY GUN HOLDER TOOL The spray gun holder tool is designed for fast gun positioning that is always precise, allowing uniform application in the various areas of the frames to be coated.

PRECISION WORKPIECE SCANNING DEVICE The frames are scanned using a reading bar, to adapt the movement of the spraying arm accordingly.

FLEXIBLE, USER-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE The control software easily manages recipes and colour changes: defining distances, angles and spraying speeds is possible for any operator, using an intuitive program interface to save and retrieve the types of processing.

Matrix Led UV Systems The New Frontier In Superfici UV Polymerisation In the sector of development of UV driers towards the use of LED systems in place of conventional lamps, Superfici has devised its own LED UV solutions, with performance perfectly suited to the most innovative UV coating cycles. Thanks to intensive work with leading coating manufacturers, Superfici has optimised the various systems in its range to meet the applied energy, emission wavelength and efficiency requirements for the different coating products.

14 Panel & Joinery Production NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

LED UV system applications, widespread in particular in the digital printing sector and graphics industry, are now available to use in the coating of wood, partly thanks to the increasingly strong development of suitable coating products at increasingly attractive prices. Advantages obtainable with LED UV systems: • significant energy saving • No more heating the workpiece during processing, thanks to LED emission, without infrared, allowing considerable benefits in terms of finished product quality, energy savings and lower investment. With LED UV technology there is no need for the expensive workpiece cooling systems that are often necessary above all for heat-sensitive materials • No more expensive and noisy extraction systems because LEDs do not produce ozone gas • solves the problem of disposing of mercury UV lamps. The Superfici range of solutions includes both low-/medium-powered systems used mainly in pinning stations, and highpowered systems for total polymerisation. The LED UV system can be used on its own or with hybrid systems in combination with other UV sources. Such combinations are often an excellent compromise for entering the new era in order to benefit from the major energy saving and reduced temperature build up on the workpiece treated, highly specialised chemicals for paints. Superfici’s team of specialists designs modular, customised solutions for every need and application. They use advanced know-how gained concerning every aspect of the LED system, from perfecting cooling devices to control drivers, feed, control software and its graphical interface.

time. We do a lot of sheet work and it reduces the noise by about 50%, that is something to shout about.” Going on to say “The Sander is second to none! Saves us on average, one week per month in sanding and the pad facility for the finish is absolutely brilliant!”. Mark also said “The panel saw is more than just repeatability, the fact we can program in every function for our v cutters, all the different size blades and once it is set it goes exactly to that and because it is all

CASE STUDY Hill’s Panel Products invests in game changing production solution from HOMAG Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) was formed in 1991 with the sole aim of supplying components to the furniture industry. Since that time, the company and its product range have expanded greatly. The business offers a huge range of full and processed sheet material, vinyl wrapped furniture doors and furniture fittings. “The panel business is extremely competitive and to be successful you have to have a highly efficient manufacturing facility,” explains Martin Hill, operations director at HPP. He continues, “Compared to our formative years in business, the range of boards, finishes and colours has skyrocketed. This put enormous pressure on the traditional method of storage and retrieval of raw boards. “We had to pick the sheets using a forklift truck from cantilever racking in the warehouse and then manually load them onto the machines. Not only was picking raw boards in ‘rainbow packs’ (different colours and sheet sizes) for nesting a timeconsuming and laborious task, but also it made the boards very susceptible to damage through miss-handling. Additionally, it caused a logistics issue because, due to space limitations in the warehouse, we couldn’t pick full sheets for customers when the forklift was picking sheets for our panel production.”

Two Homag Venture BHP 200 CNC’s for part of HPP’s nesting capacity

The search for the ideal solution “The investment for the right solution was going to be significant and so we looked at a number of options that would achieve our goals for the business. A major factor, however, was time. It was vitally important for us to have the system in place by July 2016, but we weren’t ready to place the order until December 2015. “Only HOMAG was able to guarantee this time-frame and its area sales manager, Jon

Lawman, worked tirelessly to ensure they won the business by giving us exactly what we needed. “It was complex, because we weren’t just looking for a storage and retrieval system in isolation. We wanted a complete package of machinery including two high-performance nesting CNC routers and two fast, but highquality edgebanders with return systems. “This new equipment was required for integration with existing machinery to form a new, highly automated production cell which we refer to as ‘Board Production 2’. The HOMAG Automation TLF 411 storage and retrieval system is the heart of this new cell. It picks batches of raw boards throughout the night, building up a buffer of work for the four CNC nesting routers in the cell.”

One of the two HOMAG Ambition 2270 edgebanders installed at Hill’s Panel Products

18 Panel & Joinery Production NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

“All our work is bespoke, therefore, from an efficiency stand-point, the best production option is the nesting route. We manufacture in live batches where a nest could contain 30 or 40 different orders, so selecting the right machines for our business was critically important. “As part of our due diligence we visited another company that was running a HOMAG Vantage 200/710 CNC nesting

machine. In addition, we went out to the HOMAG factory in Germany where we were able to take our own material samples to run through the machine to see how well it would process them. We were incredibly impressed with the build quality of the HOMAG product and it’s clear to see why it is the market leader. The processing speed and cutting accuracy of the machine was amazing, it was an easy decision to order two machines. “All the HOMAG machines use the MagiCut software, so the logic is the same whether you’re operating a CNC or an edgebander. That makes it easy for the machine operators to move from machine to machine.”

HOMAG edgebanders with PU gluing system “We already had a HOMAG edgebander for doing the PVC edges on doors, but for our new cell we wanted to move up a level or two. It was important that the new machines used a PU gluing system because we were wanted to produce a higher specification product that offered a higher heat resistance against delamination and a more water resistant bond.”

The HOMAG Ambition 2274 edgebanders give a superb clean finish with an almost invisible glue line. There are a number of factors which contribute to this high-quality edge: firstly, the panels are firmly held in place as they pass through the machine, with a belt track at the top and a chain with pads at the bottom – this minimises panel movement therefore giving a better bond. The PU gluing system also requires less glue than the traditional hot melt systems and so the bond is much tighter. Martin Hill again, “We specified an automatic return system for each of the HOMAG edgebanders to make each machine a one-man operation. This allows us to run the machines at 20 metres per minute with corner rounding, a 33 percent increase in speed over our old machine and all this whilst providing a much better finish to the product.”

themselves within four years. But more importantly, the new system has given us around 50 percent more capacity to provide cut, edged and drilled components. This has enabled us to not only keep up with customer demands whilst producing high-quality products, but also to service additional customers. We have only had the system running for a few months, but it is already doing exactly what we expected and there is still considerable potential to be realised as we get to fully understand the parameters of the system,” concludes Martin Hill. INSTALATION Kündig: A Sander For Every Season Whatever your sanding needs, Kündig has a sander to meet them from its range of widebelt sanders and edge sanders, including its bespoke division, Kündig Technic. Technic machines created so far include top/bottom sanding systems with two to six units; extra large machines for the panel industry, with special machines for plywood and sanders with cutterheads; and machines for working with very thin material in the laminate industry. If you have a requirement that you feel cannot be met by a standard machine, have a word with Kundig: the solution may be closer than you think. Here are just some of the companies who have purchased Kündig sanders in recent years: Michael Northcroft is a British furniture designer and maker with an international reputation for excellence. Founded by managing director, Michael Northcroft, in 1982, the company purchased a Kündig Brilliant-2 1600 REd sander in 2016 from Kündig Ltd’s authorised agent, A12 Machinery of Essex. Michael says: ““The Kündig is an expensive beast, but you do get a high quality job out of it. We make very high quality furniture. Our client base includes many international stars, performers, sports people around the world so we need high quality sanding. The furniture is tailored to their homes and the quality has to be really good. “We use a lot of exotic veneers and woods in our furniture. The Kündig minimises ripples and defects in high class lacquers. “We also sand our solid wood components on it. A multitude of solid wood components go into our furniture. The Kündig is highly accurate: you get the dimension out that you set the machine to. There is no burning, you get a very clear finish and it is wonderfully trouble free. “It is a really good machine, I am really pleased with it.“ Roland Tagg and Bob Underwood of TAGG Furniture, established in 1979, purchased a Premium-2 1350 RE for sanding both solid wood and veneered boards, as well as a Uniq-S edge sander for the sanding of edges to MDF panels. TAGG furniture already had a wide belt sander which had served the company

20 Panel & Joinery Production NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

faithfully for many years, but it was reaching the end of its useful life. And once the decision had been made to replace the wide-belt sander, it was natural for Roland to buy the edge sander at the same time. Kündig Ltd was approached because “After a lot of research and talking to friends and fellow furniture makers Kündig sanders came out top and they were very highly rated. That is a good advertisement!” Roland said. He continues, “It is a very compact machine and we are very tight for space, so not having a lot of extra bits stuck on the side was very useful. The old machine had a 1,100 mm capacity; this one has a 1,350 mm capacity with a smaller footprint. “The quality of the finish is really, really good. Before we didn’t put veneered panels through the old machine in case it sanded through the veneer. “It gets used a lot as we are manufacturing different items all the time. We have lots of different people using the machine on various projects and because of the simplicity of use any of our workforce can go up to it and use it after just 10 minutes of training without worrying about messing it up, and will get a good result.” deVOL purchased a Kündig Premium-3 1100 RRP sander, delivered and commissioned in September 2015. Managing director, Robin McLellan, added: “In the search for a new sander, we worked through Markfield Woodworking Machinery (MWM), with whom we have a long standing relationship. We have bought a lot of machinery from them in the past, and they introduced us to Kündig Ltd and to Carl O’Meara.” Carl went with Robin and Gavin Cooper of MWM to Wreak Valley Craftsman to see a Premium-2 1100 RE with vacuum belt in action, carrying out various demonstrations using different grit configurations on a selection of kitchen doors and components Robin had brought for testing purposes. Robin says, “We tried a variety of machines, and the Kündig sander was the one we had the best experience with finishing wise. We were aware of their reputation, and wanted to get the best machine on the market. The advantages of the Kündig were all very subtle things, and that is often the case

Create a uniform finish with PerfectSense The wood-based material manufacturer is closing the product gap to existing MDF lacquered boards with PerfectSense Matt on laminate. As such, vertical and horizontal furniture applications, as well as curved surfaces, become possible in the EGGER set of matching decors and materials. Matching ABS and PMMA edging is available in gloss and matt for uniform designs. The 2.800 x 2.070 mm format is suitable for cutting and therefore allows for utilisation, low wastage and cost effectiveness, making projects affordable.

with PerfectSense Matt due to its anti-fingerprint properties. The smooth surface and 3D finish means that PerfectSense Gloss stands out from other high-gloss surfaces. The high quality look and durability, is due to the melamine-faced MDF decor board being sanded repeatedly and then coated via a highly technical procedure. TIMBER

Red Grandis™ Lands At Lathams The UK’s biggest independent timber and panel products distributor, James Latham, is now offering Red Grandis™ directly from stock through all eight of its nationwide timber depots. Ethically sourced and plantation grown in Uruguay by forestry and logging giant Urufor, Red Grandis is one hundred percent FSC® certified and fully complaint with EUTR legislation. Offering exceptional durability and stability, this high-performing, versatile hardwood timber - which comes from the Eucalyptus family - is also easy to machine and stain, plus, because it is plantation grown, it offers continuity of supply. James Latham’s Technical Timber Sales Development Manager, Justin Hayward explained, “We are really excited to be able to offer this product and I am confident that it will quickly become a popular choice with our customers. Red Grandis is ethically sourced; environmentally friendly and readily available and this, coupled with outstanding levels of performance in stability and durability, ensures that it ticks all of the boxes not only for us, but for our customers.” Typical uses for Red Grandis include all

BOARDS & PANELS Furniture Remains the Most Important Market For European MDF Producers The UK market for wood panel products is dominated by the construction industry, which uses all varieties of panel products for structural, aesthetic and fitting-out purposes. However, the second most important market for panel producers is furniture. The growth of flat-pack DIY products during the latter part of the 20th century created a demand for both particleboard and MDF that continues to grow strongly. Its consistent and reliable physical characteristics and the ease with which it can be machined also lend MDF to manufacturing and it is used widely in the manufacturing sector for carcassing and framing. Norbord produced the world’s first MDF (in 1966 at its factory in New York State) and in 1979 its Cowie factory became the first to produce MDF in the UK. Today the company manufactures a full range of MDF products for a variety of applications, including light and standard grades and moisture-resistant versions. Its top-quality grade, CaberWood MDF Industrial, is designed specifically for the production of high-grade furniture and fittings. Its consistent close-grained texture ensures clean edges and surfaces that will take a smooth finish. While the furniture industry is an important consumer of all types of wood product (including expensive high quality hardwoods) the bulk of its production relies on sheet materials and in particular, products like Norbord’s CaberWood MDF. According to the Wood Panel Products Federation, the UK furniture industry consumes around 28 per cent of all domestically-produced wood panel products, a similar proportion to the total amount of all roundwood products consumed in the UK (the Timber Trades Federation estimates that furniture production accounts for 30% of all imported and domestically produced wood). The industry is especially important for MDF producers, half of whose total

production is consumed by furniture manufacturers. Only 40 per cent of UK MDF goes to the construction industry in stark contrast to particleboard and OSB where construction accounts for 55 per cent and 80 per cent of annual production respectively (source: WPIF). As a proportion of the UK total, WPIF estimates that MDF accounts for 29% of annual UK consumption of domestically produced panel products (compared to particleboard, 64 per cent, and OSB, 7 per cent). In 2016, UK MDF production reached 950,000 cu m compared with 320,000 cu m of OSB and 2,310,000 cu m of particleboard. Demand for the product currently exceeds supply and imports remain steady at around 25 per cent. Last year, total UK consumption of MDF reached 1,245,980 cu m. Demand for MDF is currently growing throughout the UK and Europe. The European Panel Federation reports that

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

MDF production throughout the region grew by 2.7 per cent in 2015 from 11.5 million cu m to 11.8 million cu m. At the same time, the value of wood furniture production increased 4.4 per cent to ¤31.2b across the Euro 28 while, in the UK, the market grew by 1.1 per cent. Norbord is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of engineered wood-based panel products. All products are FSC®certified and used extensively in the construction, DIY and furniture sectors. Norbord’s brands, SterlingOSB, CaberBoard, CaberWood MDF and ContiBoard are well known and are commonly specified by architects, national housebuilders and specifiers.

SOFTWARE

Dominic Ash Ltd Look To The Future With Cabinet Vision A “brilliant and very clever tool” is how Dominic Ash, Owner of Dominic Ash Ltd., describes Cabinet Vision, as the business looks to the future with new Draughtsman, Ed Muir. Dominic Ash Ltd are an internal architectural joinery company operating from an 8,000 square foot manufacturing facility, based near the village of Yanworth in the Cotswolds. The company, which has been established for over 20 years, is owned by Dominic Ash and his wife Kate, who work with six employees to create high-quality, impressively designed

furnishings for interiors. Their vast range of bespoke creations includes; kitchens, wardrobes, staircases, tables, chairs, free-standing pieces of furniture, built-in book cases, and internal doors. Their client-base include professionals such as architects and interior designers, as well as individuals looking for beautiful bespoke furnishings for their home. Dominic Ash says “While we do focus on high end cabinetry, we also offer some basic products. A couple recently wanted some very high end products such as a high end kitchen and fireplace

surround, but more basic items for their utility room, so I can cover both aspects.” Within the manufacturing process, Dominic Ash Ltd use Cabinet Vision and Screen To Machine to produce all cabinetry from plywood, MDF and veneered MDFs. They chose to invest in Cabinet Vision a year ago to make their processes more efficient and remove human error. He says: “It’s very important to us that each component is high precision so they can assemble perfectly.” Before implementing Cabinet Vision, the many processes involved for each job were

SOFTWARE time consuming and repetitive. “We were trying to eliminate some of those processes and the human error. Previously we would draw everything in CAD, break it into the components for the CNC machine, put those into a DFX file and load that into the proprietary software as individual pieces, and then through into the CNC to create nests. Cabinet Vision speeds up the process and does away with the need for manual cutting lists.” Now their CAD designs are imported into Cabinet Vision where the cabinets are created, and then Screen To Machine sends the NC code to their 3-axis Biesse Skill CNC router. The company had been seeing time benefits and were enjoying a streamlined manufacturing process until recently when their trained Cabinet Vision user left the business. They are now eager to evaluate the situation and get up to speed again with the support of their new employee, Draughtsman, Ed Muir. Although Cabinet Vision is an extensive system with wideranging functionality, Ed Muir is finding it easy to learn with no prior experience of using the software, although, he says, there is a steep learning curve. “Cabinet Vision’s best feature for me, is keeping everything within the master template. It’s very quick to

be able to adapt the template to work on a particular job. You can change any element of a cabinet, which makes creating new cabinets so much faster. You can easily adapt and change any part of an existing cabinet using the parametric function. ”This ensures that once a panel or cabinet is created in ‘Job A’, if ‘Job B’ involves a similar cabinet, the parametric function allows us to take the item from ‘Job A’ and move it to ‘Job B,’ adapt the size, and everything else will follow suit.” Due to the many bespoke items that Dominic Ash Ltd produce, Ed Muir says:

“We have different templates of different materials for construction as well, so it’s really simple to drag and drop.” The company are now setting the foundations to take them forward with Cabinet Vision, and possibly utilise more of what the software has to offer. They are aware that investing time up front will pay dividends later, as previously they had been more focused on using it, rather than on how they were going to use it in the future. Dominic Ash envisages that Cabinet Vision will be an integral part of their processes in the years to come as they continue to explore new functions of the software. “It’s a brilliant and very clever tool. I can see a lot of benefits in it and it’s probably everything I thought it was going to be. For us, we’re not a factory producing the same item time and time again. We’re creating new items and new methods all the time, so we’re probably exploring Cabinet Vision a lot more than the average user would.” He has also been impressed by the speed of the software when converting designs into CAM and accurately sending NC code to the router, as well as the “superb” support they have received.

SOFTWARE Cabinet Vision’s Parametric Function And Labelling For The Deluxe Group Parametric capability was the main reason a company focusing on high end bespoke joinery invested in Cabinet Vision…and quickly realised its customised labelling system also made life easier on the shop floor. The Deluxe Group manufacture and install bespoke joinery and provide interior fit-out services to the luxury hospitality, high end residential, education, healthcare and workplace markets all over Britain and Ireland. The company also have a theme set build division that provide themed “wow” features for visitor attractions internationally, namely at Motiongate Dubai, Euro Disney in Paris, and recently Tayto Park in Ireland (www.thedeluxegroup.com). The company headquarters, in Portadown, Northern Ireland, runs Cabinet Vision’s flagship system, Solid Ultimate, which can design and detail all jobs using

32 Panel & Joinery Production NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

advanced solid modeling technology. It automatically generates shop drawings, 3D customer renderings, cutting lists, material requirements and estimating. And the job can be graphically laid out, or the built-in Order Entry function quickly creates cutting lists. Production Manager Jeff Love says all box and cabinetry-based components go through Cabinet Vision. “We were getting high volume repetitive work where we just needed to make tweaks to sizes. But it meant having to draw each wardrobe or cabinet in a CAD system and then manually create cutting lists which was not ideal. “But now, for instance, I can draw a wardrobe a metre wide and two metres high in Cabinet Vision, and for new jobs where the height and width need to change, I can use that existing cabinet and simply amend the details. Everything changes

parametrically, including ironmongery and all drill and hinge holes, along with the positioning of cams and dowels. And the automatic cutting lists ensure everything is ready for accurate machining. The NC code is sent to our CNC machines using Cabinet Vision’s powerful Screen To Machine module.” He says the parametric function is particularly important for hotel bedrooms which vary in size. “We may have one style of unit, but 20 different types with changes to the width, depth and height. We simply adjust those figures and the rest follows automatically. Cabinet Vision puts them all into the one job, so we could be putting 300 sheets of material through the CNC nester, and know that even though the panels are different sizes everything will be cut exactly as shown on the design.” Having started with one Cabinet Vision

license and one Screen To Machine License for generating the NC code and sending it to the shop floor in 2014, due to the demand for the company’s services they have since added a further two design licenses, and three schedulers currently use Cabinet Vision regularly, with a further four trained on it. It drives three Biesse CNC machine tools – a flatbed 3-axis nester, a Skipper boring machine, and a recently commissioned Selco beam saw. Shop floor operatives find that the Label I.T. system reduces the chances of

misdirecting panels, and ensures a quick and smooth process through the workshop. Parts are selected by simply touching the screen and the labels are then printed instantly. The screen is updated automatically to show exactly which parts and panels have been completed. The user has complete control over what data is presented on the label. Scheduler Richard Dawson says the labels clearly show which job every panel belongs to, what has to be done to it next, and if it needs to go to another machine. As one of

the team using the software on a daily basis he turns drawings into cutting lists and programs for the CNC nester, beam saw and boring machine. “I set up the material schedule for the board we’re using, and create the units, import cams, dowels and ironmongery from Cabinet Vision’s library, and line everything up, including pre-bore holes, shelf pins, sockets, hanging rails and hinge holes. Once that’s all set up we make a sample unit for approval, and then edit if necessary, which is such a simple process. “Once the initial cabinet has been set up, the parametric function makes it so quick and easy to produce different-sized cabinets for the whole room.” The company recently made a huge investment and expanded by building a new state of the art facility on a neighboring site, which has increased manufacturing floor space from 1,000 square metres to 5,000 square metres.

SOFTWARE WorkPLAN Solutions - a New Version Dedicated to Woodworkers A new version of WorkPLAN, the ERP and Production Management solution from Vero Software, is now available, dedicated to the woodworking industry. WorkPLAN is already widely acclaimed in the automotive and aeronautics sectors, and this new version has been specifically designed for the carpentry, woodworking and fittings sector. Vero has drawn on the vast experience gained through its Cabinet Vision CAD/CAM and Alphacam CAM software solutions, which have been leaders in this sector for over 20 years, to create a fully integrated CAD/CAM/ERP system for the woodworking industry’s specific requirements. The development came after Cabinet Vision wanted to expand its range of services to over 10,000 active clients in North America, and it was agreed to offer a completely integrated solution by incorporating the Sales Activity and Production Control Management modules from the WorkPLAN software. Within a period of just a few months, the Sales and Technical teams developed the interfaces that were required to allow technical data synchronization and the creation of quotations in WorkPLAN from information generated in the Quotations menu (Design and Price Calculations in Cabinet Vision).

Design information originating from Cabinet Vision is automatically fed into WorkPLAN. The list of panels to be cut is clearly identified, along with – for each of them – the list of produced parts and the CNC programs generated by Cabinet Vision’s Screen-To-Machine module or Alphacam. Panel supply management is simplified by using purchase orders or the stock, with prior reservation if necessary. Labels generated by Cabinet Vision monitors production at each stage of the cutting process by reading the panels’ barcode. WorkPLAN Business Manager Christophe Mas says: "The seamless integration of the two software applications

will allow users to improve their productivity by optimising project job tracking, supply management and stock control, along with production monitoring." New functions have been developed for this dedicated woodworking-focused version of WorkPLAN, including Packing Management. "This will be available in the 2018 R1 release, and all users will be able to benefit, whatever their sector of activity." The woodworking version of WorkPLAN was previewed at the AWFS trade fair in Las Vegas in the summer, which led to the signature of a large number of projects on Vero’s stand there, and over 30 concrete projects have now been finalised.

CASE STUDY Derg Joinery Leaps Ahead Of Competition With New HOMAG Venture BMG 311 With over forty years’ experience of both the window and joinery trades, Damian Balfry and Greg Carey continued to form Derg Joinery in 2015. Their high level of expertise and knowledge they brought to the company has led to Derg Joinery becoming the leading manufacturer of timber window frames, casings, doors and screens in Ireland. With its continuous drive to produce high quality bespoke joinery products and its desire to remain competitive, the company looked to purchase an advanced CNC router. Damian Balfry, managing director of Derg Joinery explains, “We were looking to automate our processes to increase production efficiency. It was essential to us that our bespoke products would still be produced to the same high standards and with the level of accuracy that have become the bedrock for the business.”

HOMAG – highly recommended within the industry “We initially evaluated the three market leaders, including HOMAG. We already knew of its strong reputation for first class

machinery and reliability within the woodworking industry. However, it was the recommendation from another company in the trade, who we work with and trust, that really convinced us. Having an endorsement from someone who has had considerable experience with HOMAG really made the difference. “Once we had spoken to HOMAG, it was clear that a HOMAG Venture BMG 311 CNC router would be the best fit for us. I had worked with CNC routers in previous roles but I had never seen or used a HOMAG CNC myself. “HOMAG invited us to the UK to visit two companies who were operating HOMAG Venture 5-axis CNC routers at their facilities. We visited both Mumford & Wood in London and Arden Windows in Coventry. Being able to see the machines and witness their capabilities in action really impressed us. Seeing how satisfied the two companies were, and speaking with them about their experiences, really sold HOMAG to us. After the visits, we made the decision to purchase a HOMAG Venture BMG 311 CNC.”

The HOMAG Venture BMG 311 CNC – advanced machining at high speeds “After much discussion with HOMAG UK, we chose a 6175 x 1550 metre worktable for our HOMAG Venture BMG 311. This format would ensure we were able to produce both windows and large doors with as little manual labour as possible. Its LED pod and rail positioning system allows for highly visible, quick and reliable set ups, ensuring that production speed is not compromised between projects. “The main selling points of the HOMAG machine were the 15kw 5-axis router which is programmable from 0-24,000 RPM, and the gantry system. This has a strong reputation in the industry for its ability to speed up production and increase accuracy – a vitally important factor for us. The BMG’s tool changer has 27 tool places with a 13 position drill block for both vertical and horizontal drilling. This means we are able to save time between jobs, as we don’t need to manually change the tools for different tasks.

CASE STUDY

HOMAG’s pneumatic power clamps provide extreme flexibility for solid wood processing

“The CNC has heavy duty pneumatic power clamps for solid wood production which is especially important when producing windows. The power clamps can hold multiple window components at once which again speeds up production. The suction cups allow the machine to hold and process large and heavy doors. This not only reduces the amount of labour needed, but also minimises possible damage to the panels. “When choosing which operating software to use, we had the option of using external companies. However, we felt that HOMAG’s own woodWOP software was the best fit with its simplicity and ease of use. Coupled with woodMotion, the software is able to simulate the program before machining to check for accuracy, as well as provide collision control. This protects the machine from any crashes during production. Additionally, it includes woodScout which is an on board intelligent software system, allowing the BMG 311 to self-diagnose any system errors and faults for fast rectification.”

New opportunities as Ireland’s leading joinery company “As HOMAG stipulated, it only took a few days for the machine to be installed and we completed our training at HOMAG UK. Naturally, there were some teething issues getting to grips with the machine and starting to produce windows. “It was a steep learning curve, especially as we had never used a CNC router as advanced as the BMG 311 before. Those issues, however, were quickly put behind us and now we could not be without this impressive CNC machine. The benefits are already greater than we expected and we have not yet exploited its full capabilities. “Not only has the machine immensely improved efficiency and accuracy for us, but it has also streamlined the production flow by replacing the work of 12 machines. It really is a one-stop shop and now the only manual labour needed is for gluing and painting. This has meant we were able to upskill three existing members of staff for other roles within the company. “The Venture BMG 311 has opened up

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

new and exciting opportunities for us with both the trade and general public. It has given us exclusivity by becoming one of few companies in Ireland with the capabilities of a 5-axis CNC machine. We can take on advanced projects which we would never have been considered for previously. The machine has more than met our expectations and has given us a real advantage within the market,” concludes Damian Balfry.

PROFILE Determining The Value Of Investment In Customised CNC Routers Is it more advantageous to invest in a fully customised CNC router or will a standard off-the-shelf machine be sufficient to meet production requirements? This is a question that sign and graphics companies will inevitably ask. The decision is not an easy one and a number of factors have to be considered before determining which of the two options is the most appropriate in relation to individual requirements. Leading global manufacturer and distributor of high-performance CNC routing, engraving and cutting machines, AXYZ International examines some of these factors and offers advice on how to avoid pitfalls that can occur during the purchasing process. Every company endeavours to demonstrate due diligence when deciding between a fully customised CNC machine and an off-the-shelf one. The evaluation process can be quite complex, given the fact that customised CNC routers have evolved rapidly over the past decade to offer considerably more functionality. The focus of potential buyers has to be on both the present and future requirements of their businesses in the context of a router’s capabilities, the required quality of the finished output, production volumes, the effective use of time and labour and the contribution the machine will make to the future growth and prosperity of the business. Traditional methods of sign and graphics production have existed for years. However, the drawback has always been the commitment of time and labour, particularly when it came to the more specialised and complex sign and graphics applications. With the emergence and evolvement of CNC routers, traditional and time-consuming manual processes have rapidly been replaced to enable huge savings in time and labour costs, increased production levels and a superior quality of output. For small and/or start-up companies that may have either considered customised CNC routers as too expensive in the context of the bottom line of the business or failed

40 Panel & Joinery Production NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

to appreciate the potential that existed with customised machines in terms of business growth and profitability, an off-the-shelf machine would at first glance appear to be a logical choice. To a certain extent, such thinking still exists today within these companies, primarily due to the lower initial investment requirement on off-theshelf machines. However, the continually expanding capabilities of CNC customised routers has now changed this perception, with the availability of a plethora of additional and highly advanced machine enhancements that enable engagement with highly complex and/or industrial-grade applications for which off-the-shelf routers would be totally unsuited in view of their limited capabilities. This would explain the growing interest in NBM (Nested-Based Manufacturing) by small or start-up companies which now view fully customised CNC routers as an opportunity for expansion, business growth, divergence into new markets and increased profitability. In stark contrast, off-the-shelf routers are very restricted in their use. They are invariably sourced via the internet from a third-party reseller or distributor, resulting in no direct access to the manufacturer when technical support or necessary spare parts are required and with little or no operator training provided. They also incorporate only the basic of standard production tools (invariably just a single routing head as one example), provide only a standard bed size, cannot use different production tools and controllers and have insufficient torque to undertake heavier and more complex work as well as being unable to carry out vital machine upgrades. Whilst there is an understandable reason for small or start-up business owners to

initially opt for an off-the-shelf machine in spite of the foregoing, the dramatically enhanced capabilities of fully customised CNC routers can now be harnessed without impacting unduly on the bottom line of any business, regardless of size and financial status. Some key considerations to be made before arriving at a decision to purchase either an off-the-shelf or fully customised CNC machine are as follows: *If a lower-cost off-the-shelf machine is opted for, make sure it will deliver precisely what is required for the work being undertaken and the need for future business growth *Do not misjudge the type of tooling required to process widely differing materials, particularly since some tools have been designed for highly specialised routing, cutting and shaping applications *Be aware of the parts and accessories required to maximise production in order not to incur additional costs later *Check the level of support that would be available (it is more efficient in terms of cost and maintenance when the supplier of the machine is also the technical support advisor, particularly since third-party providers are invariably more expensive and less reliable) *Define supplier responsibilities by making sure the supplier offers comprehensive training programmes and can maintain spare parts availability *Make sure the machine purchased is capable of future upgrades in order to take advantage of new technological advances and their capabilities

Daltons Wadkin Install Altendorf at R & S Tonks As a family business, R & S Tonks have remained faithful to their critical value of ensuring product quality. Following many trusted years’ service from their Wadkin CP32 sliding table panel saw, it was time to upgrade. After considerable research and deliberation, Andy Eardley, R & S Tonks’ Workshop Manager, soon realised that there was only one name capable of meeting the precision and bespoke machine requirements, an Altendorf from Daltons Wadkin. From humble beginnings over 65 years ago operating from a rented stable behind a hotel, to their purpose-built factory and office unit, R & S Tonks have undoubtedly developed into an industry leader offering an unrivalled building refurbishment and maintenance service to blue chip and independent businesses throughout the hospitality sector. Many elements from within have aided the company to grow, such as the very best manufacturing equipment and an exceptional team of experienced joiners and tradesmen – many of which have more than 20 years’ service within the business. Daltons Wadkin have previously supplied R & S Tonks with machinery, servicing and training. Daltons Wadkin, also a family business, and R & S Tonks share similar core values, an important factor for Robert Tonks, the current Managing Director of R & S Tonks. Andy Eardley’s comments on their requirements and reasons for choosing an Altendorf, “Our customers are demanding even shorter turnaround times and we must be able to offer 100% product quality and repeatability. Whilst needing to improve the core functions of our sliding table panel saw, we need a machine with the flexibility that will enable us to open up new markets. We need perfection and we need it right first time. Having searched the market, an Altendorf panel saw is the only answer”. After discussing the almost limitless combination of options available for an Altendorf saw, it became apparent that the versatile F45 ProDrive tailored exactly to R

& S Tonks’s production requirements. To cater for large panel material, the Altendorf F45 was equipped with a 3200mm sliding table and a 300mm-wide infeed support roller, which Is particularly useful when cutting longer pieces against the extended 1600mm rip fence. The convenient on/ off switches on the sliding table improve safety and operating ergonomics, allowing large workpiece’s to be loaded before switching the machine on. In addition to panel work, crosscutting timber material needed to be catered for. Increased cutting depth to 204mm was included, paired with a VARIO drive motor allowing a vast array of material and sizes to be cut with ease. “The quick, fine digital adjustments we can now make on the crosscut-mitre fence reduces at least 50% operator time opposed to our previous cutting method”, comments Andy. “The rip fence is CNC controlled, we store programs in the ProDrive’ s memory function. This again saves a significant amount of set-up time, whilst eliminating any chance of operator error thanks to the machines accuracy.” Daltons Wadkin’ factory trained engineers delivered and commissioned the machine, providing familiarisation training

to maximise the efficiency of the Altendorf. “This is only one example of many growing businesses making the transition to CNC-assisted technology”, comments Daltons Wadkin Director, Alex Dalton. “Automated processes and more intelligent machines are a necessity to improve accuracy, efficiency and labour saving. Repetitive work which would normally be done by hand, and guess-work such as length compensation can be minimised to make workflow processes smoother.” The Altendorf F45 ProDrive has now been with R & S Tonks for 12 months, and has served each and every purpose to the full. Andy Eardley’s words of advice for anyone in the market for a new sliding table saw are clear, “Speak to the right suppliers, and existing machine owners who have first-hand experience using the saws. The time we have taken researching, and making the informed decision has paid the business back in dividends”.

INSTALLATION Wood Waste Heater Delivers Everything Promised The owner of a Leicestershire joinery company is delighted with his purchase of a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology, as it delivers everything promised regarding its provision of free heating. Steve Bower Joinery & Manufacturing Ltd specialises in producing traditional doors, windows, bi-fold doors and stairs. Its 7000 sq ft joinery workshop in Loughborough was freezing in winter as the workshop’s existing diesel heater was unpleasant, inefficient and expensive to use. Someone recommended to MD, Steve Bower that the business should think about investing in a wood waste heater to warm the workshop for its 5 employees. A quick search on the internet led to Wood Waste Technology, and a realisation that a wood waste heater could be the ideal solution. Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT15 wood waste heater into the joinery workshop in February this year.

MD, Steve Bower says: “Once the heater was installed the difference was obvious, as the workshop went from freezing cold to beautifully warm. We’re delighted with our purchase, it does everything we were told it would and more than fulfils our business requirements. It’s been a great investment.” Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology says: “Businesses with a significant amount of wood waste can get payback on their investment in a wood waste heater in as little as 12 months because of the savings that can made by reducing heating and skip hire bills.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-

going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. DUST EXTRACTION New Survey From Festool Shows Awareness Of Benefits Of Dust Extraction According to the latest survey of UK tradespeople conducted by Festool, a leading supplier of power tools and accessories, 49% of respondents believe the main benefit of using dust extraction is healthy lungs. To highlight World COPD Day, which took place on November 15, Festool commissioned the survey to find out how people in the trade felt about the benefits of dust extraction. COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, describes a group of lung conditions that make it difficult to empty air out of the lungs because airways have been narrowed. Those living with COPD may find it difficult to breathe, and can also find everyday tasks a real challenge. Findings from Festool’s survey also highlighted that some 20% of respondents believed that cleanliness is the main benefit to using dust extraction, ensuring customers’ properties are less impacted by the dust and fewer hours are taken up at the end of the job cleaning up. The majority of tradespeople that responded – 70% – said they use a dust extractor while working. Up to 20% of the length on any project was spent cleaning up after completion, according to one in five of those that didn’t use any form of dust extraction. Jon Burcham, Marketing Manager at Festool, said: “The tradespeople that answered our survey were primarily made up of carpenters, joiners, furniture makers and kitchen fitters. “They said using a dust extractor drastically reduced the time they spent having to clear up after projects, because the dust is cleaned up as you go, creating a more pleasant and safe working environment. “As part of our Breathe Easy campaign, we’ve been working with the British Lung Foundation over the past year to raise awareness of lung conditions like COPD, which sadly can be particularly prevalent amongst people working in dusty environments.” Dr Penny Woods, Chief Executive of the British Lung Foundation, said: “As part of World COPD Day this year, we are keen to dispel the common misconception that COPD is an older person’s disease, solely caused by

46 Panel & Joinery Production NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

smoking, with our ‘many faces of COPD’ campaign. About 15–20% of COPD cases are due to occupational exposures to pollutants at the workplace. We’ll continue working with Festool to ensure people are aware of this link.” Festool’s survey concluded that 97% of people would recommend the use of a dust extractor to help with the time efficiency of jobs, together with many health benefits. Nine people out of 10 believe that using a dust extractor can increase the longevity and lifespan of tools and 99% of respondents said using a dust extractor is beneficial to their health. Ideal for mobile use and assembly, the

Festool range of safe and robust dust extractors are low in weight and compact, ideal to transport from job to job, again saving time for the tradesperson. Festool dust extractors are suitable for any job, from the small mobile dust extractor CLEANTEC CTL MINI (CTL MINI GB 240V or 110V) to the larger mobile dust extractor CLEANTEC CTM 36 AC HD (CTM 36 E AC HD GB 240V). What’s more, all come with strong suction power thanks to the compact highperformance turbine and conical suction hose.
