PROFILE Blum opens new state-of-the-art Experience Centre at its UK HQ in Milton Keynes Blum, the UK’s leading fittings supplier to the KBB sector, has launched a brand new immersive facility at its UK offices and warehouse in Milton Keynes. The Experience Centre is 11,500 sq ft of interactive experience: “A place where ideas and relationships are brought to life,” explains David Sanders, Blum UK sales and marketing director. “It’s a state-of-the-art facility, where our partners can experience not only Blum’s products but also its services, its people, its heritage and culture.”

environment where your senses will be awakened. The company is steeped in heritage. Blum is still a family owned business, founded by Julius Blum on 1st March 1952. Blacksmiths by trade, they started selling their first hinge in 1958 and this was the start of Blum’s entry into the furniture industry. In the new Experience Centre, visitors’ senses will be transported back to the original foundry with sights, sounds and even scents evoking the era.

Investment The Experience Centre is based around the principles of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and it’s a testament to the investment that the company is making within the industry. “We make a huge commitment every year to invest in the infrastructure of our business,” adds David Sanders. “We have 28 subsidiaries globally, export to over 120 countries and have four production plants. We invest not only in buildings but also our people. We are

extremely proud of our apprenticeship programme in Austria and the US and have 306 apprentices training this year.”

Research & Development Demonstrating their passion for research and development, the Centre also includes a virtual reality experience with a 3D movie of the manufacturing process, a fully kitted out apartment that showcases Blum’s extrawide and deep drawers that can hold up to 70kg in weight, as well as 1.8m wide bi-fold lift systems and more. “We have a passion for research and development,” says David, “and we are always pushing boundaries, innovating new products and services and exploring new technologies.”

Experience Training Facility For retailers and manufacturers, the Centre encompasses an innovative Experience Training Facility and includes a Technical Room, Retailer Room and Consumer Room. In the training centre, which can cater for up to 50 delegates, Blum offers state-of-the-art courses for the industry in technical training and retail services The consumer room includes fullsized, movable cabinets so they can testdrive their kitchen in an area that also showcases the latest products.

PEOPLE IDS Welcomes Senior Staff From Swiss Krono To The UK For An Exclusive Visit Senior executives from Swiss Krono recently visited IDS on a twoday trip to further cement their 16-year partnership. IDS has been Swiss Krono’s exclusive UK distributor since 2000. Mauro Capozzo, Chief Executive Officer, Jürg Meier, Chief Operating Officer and Paul Mullings, Export Sales Director spent time at the purpose-built 70,000 sq ft IDS Head Office at Parkhouse for the first time since it opened in 2014. They met key staff and gained a deeper understanding of the operations and logistics of the business. The trip follows a successful meeting at the Swiss Krono Headquarters in Switzerland earlier this year, to discuss the PR and marketing strategy, and see the state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, for new collections being introduced into the UK. Says John Bagshaw, Managing Director at IDS: “We were delighted to welcome Mauro, Jürg and Paul, as this visit was a significant milestone in our 16-year relationship with Swiss Krono. IDS Expands Its Senior Team With A New Regional Sales Manager North

On the 22nd of August Alistair Rattenbury joined Norbord as the new business development manager for the South West. Having previously worked for companies such as Travis Perkins and Jewson as a sales executive for branches in Dorset and Devon, the 31 year old from Chadstock brings with him Alistair Rattenbury, Norbord's a wealth of sales experience new business development manager for the South West in the merchant sector. David Webb, head of the BDM team said "We're delighted to bring Alistair into our already strong Business Development team as I'm sure he will prove to be a great asset to Norbord."

Surface materials distributor IDS has appointed Jamie Ibbetson to the new position of Regional Sales Manager North. He strengthens the Panel Products division of the business and will be responsible for three Business Development Managers, driving the panel sales strategy for the north, managing the sales team & developing new business for MFC, MF MDF and panel products for his region. Liam Martin Wins W Challenge Bristol-based woodworking apprentice, Liam Martin, 19, has been crowned the winner of W16’s very first woodworking and joinery competition, the W Challenge. Run by training provider, Didac, the talented finalist was given four-days to follow a strict brief that would see him and three further students put their skills to the test to create a curved door panel. The brief, which was kept under wraps until the first day of the competition, was designed to challenge the students and get them to use a wide range of skills that they had learnt during their apprenticeship training. The judging process, which was headed by BWF’s Dave Campbell and Didac Supervisor’s, Paul Stevenson and Shane

Stenning, looked at the whole manufacturing process and assessed the students throughout the competition. Sean explains, “Whilst the students understanding of the brief was a crucial factor, they were also marked on their house keeping skills. Safety, time management, conservation of timber and planning were all essential and marked accordingly. Each finalist had to show their efficiency in the work place and meet the brief in its entirety. It was a big ask but after seeing them in the heat stages, we knew they were more than capable.” On winning the competition, Liam adds, “Curved work is always a challenge and you have to be painstakingly accurate. If you don’t follow the measurements to the

millimeter, your design won’t work. The brief wasn’t easy but I concentrated on the job in hand and I’m so pleased I won. I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet.” Liam’s prize was £500 worth of Felder vouchers and each finalist was given a personalised plaque to mark the occasion.

Debuting the unique product for the first time in the UK at the Elements exhibition, the prestigious award was presented to the inventor, Benjamin Halde, at today’s show. “I really didn’t expect to win the award. The competition was high. W16 & Elements – The Review With increased visitor numbers, exhibitor re-booking figures exceeding 80% and over 50% of visitors already committed to returning in 2018, this year’s woodworking machinery and materials exhibition, W16, has been hailed as a huge success. More than 200 of the industry's most influential names exhibited at the longstanding manufacturing exhibition, which took place alongside the brand new furniture components show, Elements. Spanning over 11,000 square metres – a 15% increase on W14’s blueprint - the exhibition was a hive of activity, with product launches, live demonstrations and new, interactive zones adding to the show's interest. The new exhibition format, which was headed by London-based exhibition specialist, Montgomery, saw the very first

Elements of Innovation Awards taking place live at the show and a unique, fourday competition that saw four woodworking apprentices put their skills to the test and compete for the coveted ‘W Challenge’ title and £500-worth of Felder vouchers. This, alongside an interactive Best Practice Zone and the addition of the UK’s only dedicated furniture components show, Elements, has set the bar high for future W shows. Lisa Campagnola, W16 Events Director adds, “W16 and Elements were a complete success, with many exhibitors expressing

their delight with the new show format and citing the show as their best to date, thanks to a high level of quality leads and generous footfall. The show was well attended by industry professionals and feedback on the new visitor attractions was really positive. For us, it’s these opinions from exhibitors and visitors that really count. They hold the key to the show's success and offer the best insight we could ask for. Now it’s time to look ahead to W18 and continue to be a driving force behind the UK’s furniture manufacturing industry.”

Demonstrations of Striebig vertical panel saws and Viet artisan wide belt sanders led to orders being placed, and sales director Matt Pearce said that several firm enquiries were also received and are being followed up.

Titan Automates HOMAG City At W16 W16 was by far the most innovative UK woodworking show to date. The NEC was alive with automation and HOMAG City in Hall 7 led the way, exhibiting its latest range of technology for both small and large manufacturers. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK comments, “Once again, it was a phenomenal show for HOMAG UK. Interest grew each day and by the end of the show we had smashed our ambitious sales target by over 30 per cent – a truly remarkable achievement. “The woodworking industry is certainly embracing automation as manufacturers look to make production processes quicker and more efficient to enable them to compete in what is increasingly becoming a global market.

Perfect edges with HOMAG at W16 HOMAG UK displayed its latest edgebanding technology including the most recent offerings from its popular BRANDT and HOMAG ranges. Both demonstrated several models from their ranges which started from entry-level machines for the smaller manufacturer through to large machines for industrial plants. Visitors to HOMAG City were impressed by the quality of the samples being produced by the BRANDT Ambition 1230 FC airTec model. The cost effective machine brings high quality, glueless edgbanding within the reach of the smaller manufacturer. Needless to say, a number of these impressive models were sold at the show. Making its debut at W16, the BRANDT 1440 FC Edition made a bold statement. scanning technology and gluing station. HOMAG Automation’s range of packing technology is renowned for optimally packaging fragile and top-quality products so they arrive in perfect condition. Visitors to W16 were impressed to see the innovative VKS 250 bespoke box making cell in action. Using its 3D scanner, the VKS 250 measures the dimensions of the items which need to be packaged. The scanner automatically sends the dimensions to the VKS 250 which then cuts the box to the required size from two-fold cardboard and feeds it to the operator. The operator is then able to assemble the box, position the product inside it and place it into the gluing machine which seals the box. With just-in-time production, manufacturing and stock-keeping costs can

be reduced up to an impressive 30 per cent per year. HOMAG Automation also presented its compact and easy to use MPH 410 electric carcass clamp. With adjustable pressing pressure, two pressing speeds and a timer to set the required pressing time, it is a reliable clamp. The MPH 410 is just one of many solutions from the product assembly range for flexible production.

HOMAG Cares – Raising money for Rainbows HOMAG UK continued to support its charity of the year, Rainbows, by raising money in various ways at the show. Using the demonstration machines, the company generated money for the children’s hospice by creating wooden items such as footballs, clocks and coat hooks in various designs

which were then purchased by visitors during the exhibition. HOMAG UK also donated £1.00 to Rainbows each time someone visited HOMAG City and swapped their W16 lanyard for a HOMAG UK lanyard. On top of all this, HOMAG UK made the pledge to match any money raised, generating a brilliant total of £3,500.

W16 – bigger and better than ever before Simon Brooks concludes, “Overall, W16 was a fantastic show for us and everyone at HOMAG UK would like to thank all the visitors who came to HOMAG City. We are all absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of money that was raised for Rainbows and we thank all of our visitors for their generous contributions. “The feedback and comments we received from visitors during the three day event, have left us feeling extremely positive about the future of the UK woodworking industry. “It was great to see so many of our customers at W16 and we look forward to building relationships with prospects we met at the show. Record Cabinet Vision And Alphacam Sales At W16 “Alphacam can make our machine sing.” “Cabinet Vision has transformed our business. We can very quickly and easily supply cabinetry exactly to our customers’ specifications.” Those are comments from just two of the hundreds of visitors to the Vero Software stand at W16. Over 340 strong leads were taken across the two brands, and both of them reported record sales, with Cabinet Vision and Alphacam signing orders with new customers not known to them before the show. Cabinet Vision Product Business Manager Marie Cassidy says visitors went to the stand with specific queries and looking for specific solutions. “They were interested in the number of different applications that the software can be used for…and the fact that their designs can be integrated seamlessly with virtually any machine on the market.” And Michael Pettit, Alphacam’s EMEA Sales Manager, says: “Behind every efficient CNC machine is a good CAM system – and Alphacam is that system for woodworking companies who want to exploit the full potential of their machine tools.” Alphacam works closely with a number of machinery OEMs, and W16 was the perfect venue to show manufacturers how those partnerships work in the ‘real world,’ with several joint live demonstrations. Both brands used W16 to highlight features in their forthcoming releases – with Cabinet Vision showing Material Manager and Screen to Machine links for quick and easy solutions to producing machine-ready code; and Alphacam focusing on its ability to optimise and automate CNC programming to increase a company’s productivity. “While CNC routers are now commonplace in woodworking companies, they are underutilised in a lot of cases, due to the inability to program efficiently,” says Michael Pettit. “Alphacam is a powerful and easy--to-use tool, enabling manufacturers to fully exploit the potential of their CNC investment.”

Daltons Wadkin Report Positive W16 UK distributor upbeat after enquiries reach record levels In a post-Brexit business climate Daltons Wadkin were surprised and delighted by the positive nature and sheer number of enquiries received at the show for their range of high profile and high tech equipment. “A good solid show with an enquiry level we have not seen for several years”, reported MD Francis Dalton. “The secret as far as we are concerned was the variety of market leading brands which we were able to display and demonstrate on two large stands. Five different major lines were demonstrated by our technicians throughout the show focusing on leading technology designed to influence production performance and capacity at every level.” Leading the way were the by now well established Salvador crosscutting systems involving machines for both straight and angle cutting with automatic programmable cutting and optimisation. W16 was an opportunity to re-emphasise the company’s position as sole UK and Ireland distributor for these highly successful Salvador products which are proving popular with joinery and furniture manufacturers, timber importers and merchants and the timber frame industry. Cehisa edge banders are a new departure for Daltons Wadkin but three models were demonstrated including the Flexy, the PRO12 and the new Compact laser edge machine. Technicians from Cehisa were present throughout and the machines were continually a centre of interest and activity. A Kuper XL6 6-head planing and moulding machine was featured and demonstrated and this also created great interest with its advanced pre-set controls and automatic cutterhead and pressure adjustments which enable the operator to set up a job by simply using a touchscreen. Prospective customers well used to the earlier more traditional type of moulding

machine were impressed not only by the control system but also the smooth and remarkably quiet performance. As usual a range of Elcon vertical panel saws were displayed including the unique deep cutting Titan and a large capacity automatic machine with the Elcon Advance clamping system which is designed to ease operation of the machine from a materials handling point of view and provide greater accuracy. A Kimla BPF1525 CNC router seemed to have a crowd around it throughout the show and provided a focus of attention for onlookers and prospective customers alike. A CML multi-rip saw, Stenner ST100R resaw and Altendorf sliding table panel saws were amongst other machines on display and a number of orders were taken

Smart Working From Biesse The emphasis at W16 was on SMART working (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed). The challenges our customers are faced with, such as the minimum working wage, general cost of labour, cost of real estate and materials, means that we have to innovate on their behalf to help them achieve their business objectives. We have to make our machines Smarter in order to produce more for less cost. W16 was Biesse UK’s most successful W show to date, with 46% more space than W14 and exhibiting production line operations with nesting and edgebanding cells, demonstrating that SMART working

Unveiled At W16 Wood Waste Control Unveils New Shredder And Briquette Press Ranges Wood Waste Control (Engineering) Ltd has added a new range of shredders and briquettors to its product line-up. Held at the NEC in Birmingham, this was the first showing for ClicBox and has been hailed a huge success. Showcasing the ClicBox carcass to stand visitors, the team demonstrated this pioneering product range to many who were keen to find out more about this amazing product and how it could benefit their business. ClicBox is the fastest way to build a kitchen in today’s industry and to prove this the ClicBox team ran a competition amongst stand visitors to see who could construct the carcass in the quickest time. Solid Enquiries From J&C O’Meara The J & C O'Meara stand at W16 was busy throughout the show, with several machines being sold off the stand: a Genisis 512S edgebander to a company in Leicester, a Genisis P32 panel saw to a company specialising in the manufacture of kitchens and bedrooms and an E60 Super Vertical briquetter to a company in Cumbria, with the OMC press also attracting a great deal of interest. The Genisis range of machinery is exclusively available from J & C O'Meara and consists of a select number of machines 'cherry picked' from a number of the world's leading manufacturers. Products are selected are of the highest quality yet still competitively priced. The Genisis 512S edgebander comes in two variations, one with PCD tooling and one with TCT tooling to the pre milling station. This is an all new hot melt compact edgebanding machine for coil fed materials up to 2 mm in thickness. The machine comes complete with colour touch screen control, pre milling, corner rounding scrapers and buffers. Other models in the range include the 312S, a compact 'entry' level hot melt edge bander; the 412S; and the 612S, the latest model to be introduced, with all the features found on the 512S plus an additional set of top and bottom trimmers.

The key difference between the Traditional and Vertical models is that the vertical briquetter can be positioned directly under a dust extraction unit, saving space and eliminating the need to manually transfer the waste. Also available from J & C O'Meara are the Nano briquetters, a compact model, and accessories include a transport tube, taking the briquettes to waist level; an automatic bagging station; a breaker device; a water cooling tank; a refrigerator; a refiner; 'Commander', a control panel which can be situated away from the machine; and a recycling line, an example of how to turn off cuts into briquettes. There are various models of OMC press with either heated or cold platens, depending upon the application. The machine displayed was the very heavy duty 10ft x 5ft (3100mm x 1550mm), 160 ton machine with touchscreen control and 10 pressing rams. OMC, based just outside of Bergamo in Italy, is a specialist manufacturer of hot, cold and membrane pressing machines along with vertical presses for window and door production. The series of presses can be manufactured in any size and to specific requirements. The interest attracted by the press at W16 led to a number of serious enquiries that will be followed up in the weeks and months to come. Perfect Finish At W16 For Kündig The Kündig stand at W16, manned by Carl O'Meara of Kündig Ltd as well as the team of regional agents, attracted considerable interest, with a Brilliant 2 1350 REd-L widebelt sander being ordered off the stand. This machine was used to demonstrate the benefits of oblique sanding, which ensures that defects on the sanding belt are no longer transmitted to the work piece. The edge sanders also attracted considerable interest, especially the Uniq-S. The Brilliant-2 range from Kündig has two sanding heads and can be equipped for solid wood, veneer or lacquer sanding: options are also available with one sanding head (Brilliant1), three (Brilliant-3) or four (Brilliant-4) sanding heads. These are constant passline machines: the sanding group raises and lowers to the desired thickness rather than the workpiece, with a standard working height of 3-200 mm. It is available in working widths of 1,100, 1,350 and 1,600 mm. It is available in a variety of configurations, for various combinations of joinery, veneers, solid wood and lacquer. The model sold at W16 is an all rounder and includes lacquer sanding among its options. Kündig sanders are designed for ease of use: the sanding operation is selected from a clear, easy to use control panel. For operations used frequently or are particularly demanding, such as lacquer sanding, complex instructions can be stored and easily recalled when required. Various parameters can be adjusted in real time including feed speed and belt speed. The eco* energy saving mode, fitted as standard to all the latest generation wide belt sanders, permanently checks the

required electrical energy. After a short period of time, if no workpieces are being processed, the machine starts an energy saving function. The work performance is not at all affected. For an average workshop the savings on electrical energy are about 10-15%. A particular feature of the Brilliant sander range is the oblique sanding function: at least one of the heads (normally the last) can be set up this way, and demonstrations of this function proved particularly popular at W16. In the same way that tiny flaws can be transmitted from roller to page in a printer, so tiny defects on a sanding belt can be transmitted to the workpiece, if the belt is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the workpiece. Manufacturers always ensure that their belts are provided in the best possible condition, but this does not prevent tiny defects accumulating over time. If the belt is set at an angle other than perpendicular to the direction of travel of the workpiece, these defects cannot be transmitted to the workpiece. The difference in angle need only be slight. Demonstrations of this technique proved popular at W16: there is nothing like being able to see the evidence for yourself and touch it, not simply read about it or watch a video. sanders attracted considerable interest, especially the Uniq-S, the automated model. The Uniq range features a heavy cast iron working table, set up on one side for solid wood sanding and veneer sanding on the other. The height adjustment and the tilting of the abrasive belt is motorised and the oscillation is adjustable to allow full use of the abrasive. The Uniq-S includes an integrated automatic variable speed feed system on the fine sanding side, and again is suitable both for solid wood and veneered edges. The sanding pad device of the Uniq-S includes adjustment for the differing thickness in abrasive grits, and there are two guide-pulleys on the front structure for long workpieces. The table size is 1,180 mm x 325 mm, including a bevelling fence with a scale. Mandrel protection is included. Options include an extra table with mandrel and abrasive bobbins for external and internal shapes; a semi-round table for sanding curved pieces against the rubber covered driving roller; and a 90 mm optionally available semiround table with extraction outlets. The integrated feed belt system allows the machine to handle the throughfeed sanding of both small and large workpieces, with pressure rollers holding the workpieces against the feed belt, or in the case of the machine displayed, the optional upper pressure belt was fitted.

Offering a secret, secure, removable fixing option for architects and fitters, all of its components are designed and manufactured in the UK. David Clouting at the Gherkin In a world with a constantly changing landscape, it is time to apply today's technologies for tomorrow's society. Everything about ourselves today is different to that of ourselves 50 years ago, and yet we still build using the same 50 year old materials. We are all becoming more savvy on our social responsibility and good design. On Thursday 21st April David Clouting to support this movement, held a design and innovation seminar for Interior Film and Deco Foil on the two top floors of the Gherkin, by flying over one of the top designers for LG Hausys to share his inspirations and vision! The audience was a mixture of some of the best architectural practices, interior designers and fitout companies in London. These events are successful at triggering the thought process through the whole design team, architect, contractor and end user staff etc to a more collaborative approach to occupied space! We spoke of new organic textures inspired by Nature, and how refacing in place of replacing can suit all expectations of finish, seeing the revival of PVC demonstrating new technologies for Super Matt and Gloss with finger free finishes, not forgetting airfree self adhesive systems. The event was a huge success and the credit goes to the attendees of whom without their commitment to their careers wouldn't be possible. Some of the feedback is reported below!

NEJ Stevenson Creates Finely Crafted Crozier For Pope Francis Bespoke furniture company N.E.J Stevenson has been commissioned by John McCaffrey of the Galileo Foundation, on behalf of Pope Francis, to design and create a crozier - an intricately carved hooked staff and emblematic Christian symbol - as a gift to the Archbishop of Canterbury. This gift was presented by Pope Francis to Archbishop Welby in an official visit to celebrate vespers at the historic church San Gregorio al Celio in Rome on the 5th October, marking a 50-year old Anglican and Catholic gift giving tradition. The tradition began in 1966 when Pope Paul VI met with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Michael Ramsey and famously gave him the episcopal ring he had worn as Archbishop of Milan. This was a hugely significant gesture as Catholics had never before officially recognised Anglican orders. Fifty years on, this newly created crozier gift, mirrors the significance of Paul VI’s episcopal ring. The crozier has been carefully designed to divide into three individual pieces which fit neatly inside the finely crafted accompanying box. NEJ Stevenson has created the crozier using polished oak to craft the length and body of the curved staff (traditionally inspired by the shape of a shepherd's crook) and is finished with brass fittings including a ferule inscribed with the meeting venue and the date. The crozier features a detailed carving of a serpent's head and a ram, symbolising Jesus the Risen Lamb, which was carved by QEST scholar, talented carver Amelia Crowley-Roth. Neil Stevenson, founder of NEJ Stevenson is a trustee of QEST, The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, an organisation founded to support and sustain excellence in traditional British craftsmanship. During Neil’s work with QEST, he became acquainted with Amelia’s exceptional work and approached her to collaborate on this special project. The design of this hugely symbolic crozier was inspired by the historic crozier of sixth century pope St Gregory the Great, which he presented to St Augustine when he sent him to convert the pagan English in 597. This significant crozier was famously present during a challenging meeting between Archbishop Welby and Primates of the Anglican Communion, where its presence is

said to have represented a common heritage between those attending, which helped them unite at a crucial moment. “We are honoured to have been commissioned to create a gift of such religious significance and to be a part of this important tradition,” says Neil Stevenson, Managing Director of NEJ Stevenson. “We took great care and time in the design stage for this crozier, ensuring it closely resembles the symbolic St Gregory staff. This has been an extremely interesting and unusual project to work on and we do hope the Archbishop of Canterbury enjoys the piece.” NEJ Stevenson has designed and

manufactured religious furniture for many years; this has included lecterns, celebrant's chairs and altars. Ecclesiastical commissions have included the Chapel Royal at St James Palace, the Private Chapel at Buckingham Palace and the creation of 6 bespoke pieces of furniture for the Apostolic Nunciature in Wimbledon, to be used personally by Pope Benedict XVI on his historic visit to Britain in September 2010.

WHAT’S NEW Makita Introduce New A-Mode LowSpeed Start For Latest Impact Driver Makita has introduced a new operating mode with the launch of the latest 18v Brushless motor impact driver. The new Makita DTD170 impact driver is technically a 6-function impact driver, with four speeds and matched impact power: then T-Mode is used for tightening self-drilling Tek screws and the new A-Mode (Assist mode) which, when selected starts the rotation slowly allowing maximum control of the screw as it starts to bite into the material. Once the impact driver detects the screw tightening it switches to full speed and full impact power to complete the tightening sequence. The A-Mode is designed to eliminate ‘screw cam-out’ and ‘cross threading’ caused by high speed rotation before the screw bites in the material. The New WEEKE Venture BMG 110 Series - CNC Processing Made Easy WEEKE’s new Venture BMG 110 Series has raised the bar for technically advanced compact CNC machines. The 110 Series offers 3, 4 and 5-axis solutions in a compact design which provides real operational convenience with state-of-the-art technology. Each of the Venture BMG 110 models, the Venture 113, 114 and 115, shares the same small but heavy machine frame made of a welded steel construction with a solid carriage design to ensure precise processing. The WEEKE design team has focused on making the operation of each model as convenient as possible. Gone are the traditional safety protection mats and protection grids which created a safety zone around the machine; the operator can now access each of the BMG 110 Series CNCs from all sides making it faster and easier to

set up and operate them. This innovation has resulted in a 15% reduction in the footprint of the machines. The 360 degree access has been achieved thanks to a new ‘Bumper Safety’ technology system. With this system, the BMG 110s stop automatically if anyone or anything comes into contact with the bumper. Adding further to the flexibility of the machines, the operator terminal with the powerTouch screen is now a mobile unit which can be positioned in the most convenient location around the machine dependent on the job being processed. WEEKE has also added an optional ‘Convenience Package’ featuring buttons on the machine that enable the operator to control three functions directly: start/pause, relieve and hood adjustment. In addition, the package has a laser scanner which scans the positioning range

in the X-direction in front of the gantry. If there is a person within an area of 600mm left or right from the active bumper surface, the machine automatically stops without waiting for the person or object to come into contact with the bumper. When the person leaves the scanning area, the machine stop can be cancelled by means of the start button. “The new WEEKE Venture BMG 110 Series machines are superbly engineered,” enthuses Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at HOMAG UK. He continues, “The designers have thought long and hard about the machines’ working environment and made life much easier for the operator. Everything from the large inspection window to the 360 degree access and the mobile powerTouch terminal is designed to make it a simple, efficient and cost effective CNC to run.”

Unique console table design Unlike other models on the market, the Venture BMG 110 Series’ consoles do not overhang at the front. This means that not only do all work pieces have good support, but also the waste material from them falls into the centre of the machine and not onto the floor in front of it. Ultimately, using this construction technique, the machine frame itself is much more rigid and heavier than other comparable machines. This provides a solid foundation from which the substantial gantry can be mounted without loss of surface finish quality on the end product. To further enhance their performance, the Venture BMG 110 models can be fitted with an optional waste removal conveyor belt. This wide conveyor runs the length of the machine under the console table, efficiently removing waste as it is produced. The machine has scales and pointer clamps as standard. Venture BMG 113 & 114 – compact technology for furniture manufacturers The 3 and 4-axis models, the WEEKE BMG 113 and 114, are highly efficient processing centres designed for such things as profiling furniture fronts, panel processing, cutting mitres or recesses for connecting fittings to name but a few. Both models feature an efficient, proven air-cooled routing spindle with 9kW capacity which can be increased to a 13.2kW option. CASE STUDY Advanced Approval For SCM Accord Norfolk-based company Advanced Joinery have nothing but praise for their new SCM Accord 25 FX. Installation of the 5-axis CNC machining centre was completed towards the end of 2015 and today, after mastering some of the infinite possibilities achievable with the Accord 25 FX, Advanced Joinery are utilising its full potential in production of high quality, bespoke architectural windows and doors. Lee Ellis, managing director at Advanced Joinery, began his career in the woodworking industry as a classically trained furniture maker, and his knowledge of timber and timber processing gained in these early years, together with a natural eye for detail, have been the foundation for his success with the business he has created and manages ‘hands-on’ today. In the early 1990s, Lee recognised that there was a growing market for high-performance timber windows and doors and, turning his focus from furniture making to bespoke joinery, he established The Joinery Shop based in a garage workshop in the village of Aylsham. During the following two decades the business evolved from a small, one-man band operation to become a successful commercial enterprise with an efficient and enthusiastic team of joiners, sprayers, fitters and office staff. The company has a strong client base of both trade and private customers throughout eastern England, and

is ideally located in proximity to conservation areas where traditional wooden joinery is an essential requirement for building improvement, restoration and new build. The expanding business was outgrowing the small workshop and, in 2014, Lee made the decision to make a move to larger premises; the planned move also precipitated a change in the company name to Advanced Joinery (East) Ltd, and the business was relocated to a 7000sq ft industrial unit in nearby Marsham. Following the move to new premises, demand for the company’s

products has increased exponentially and, although the well-organised workshop was already equipped with an impressive array of SCM machinery including a T130 spindle moulder, Sandya 300 belt sander, F41 Nova planer moulder and a Compact NTE 5-head moulder, which all contributed to the company’s core production, there was a clear need for investment in machinery that could cope with the increase in business volume. Lee Ellis comments: “Advanced Joinery is renowned for its quality products, so a key criterion for any investment in new machinery, to increase production speed and capacity, was that our finished product quality would not be compromised.” Because of Lee’s longstanding relationship with SCM Group UK, he had no hesitation in contacting industrial sales manager Ian McCarthy to discuss the company’s requirements for a production machine that could take Advanced Machinery’s capabilities to a new level. This was going to represent a major step forward for Advanced Joinery and Lee spent several months exploring the various machine options available from SCM. Finally, following a visit to the Group’s headquarters and demonstration centre in Rimini, Italy, the decision was made to proceed with the investment in a new 5-axis Accord 25 FX CNC machining centre. However, this was just the start of a journey for Lee and the team: “Acquiring a

new set of IT skills was a daunting prospect” admits Lee, “but the hard work and effort is really paying dividends. We now have a wide range of standard profiles and designs that can be re-sized to suit any dimensional requirements, or readily customised for bespoke projects.” SCM have a close working relationship with leading CAD-CAM software provider Kosmosoft who specialise in custom solutions for the window and door manufacturing sector. “Installing the Kosmosoft software was an obvious choice for Advanced Joinery” says Lee, “and, although the learning curve was a steep one, we were supported all the way by SCM, and Kosmosoft have been very helpful.” The Accord 25 FX provides excellent performance and is designed specifically to fulfill the demanding requirements of small to medium-sized workshops. Combining high-tech performance with intuitive, userfriendly operation, the Accord 25 FX has the flexibility and capability for high quality machining of panels, doors, windows, stairs, and complex solid wood components, as well as machining a variety of other materials such as composites, plastics and light alloys. The Accord 25 FX can be specified in a wide range of standard sizes and the mobile gantry allows precision machining across the entire bed. Advanced Joinery opted for an ‘XY’ machining area of 5020 x 1680mm, with the capacity for machining large workpieces up to 250mm high in the ‘Z’ axis. The Accord 25 FX is ergonomicallydesigned and combines high speed operation

with total operator safety, whilst allowing maximum access to the worktable; during machining operations the gantry travels the length of the bed at a top speed of 60m/min but contact with the advanced patented safety bumpers instantly reduces travel to 25m/min. Where installation space allows, horizontal photocells can also be specified as an option to cut machine speed if the operator steps within a metre of the machine. The air-conditioned electrical control box is integrated into the machine bed which enables a compact overall machine size – particularly important for the smaller workshop where installation space is often limited. The Accord 25 FX can be specified with either automatic, semi-automatic or manual positioning of workpiece support bars, and switching between clamps or suction cups is achieved quickly and easily with accessories being released at the press of a button. Alternatively, the machining centre can be supplied with a multi-function aluminium worktable with a sophisticated suction system allowing optimum hold-down for production of nested components, and equally efficient positioning and removal of suction cups and other jigs or fixing devices. At Advanced Joinery the machine specification included 8 automatic bars, which are all independently driven by a rack and pinion direct transmission system, and each of the 8 bars are fitted with 3 motorised bases for support clamps and suction cups – all of which are equipped with cleaning

blowers to clear chips and dust during machining. The Prisma KT machining head, with 5 interpolating axes, is equipped with an 11kW electrospindle capable of rotation speeds from 600 to 18,000 rpm, and is fixed directly to the mobile gantry to guarantee maximum strength and torque during routing; facilitating high levels of stock removal, when necessary, and achieving the highest quality finish. The geometry of the Prisma head also allows machining up to 10 degrees below the workpiece support level. For tooling, Lee Ellis has worked closely with Oertli UK who have assisted the company with the manufacture of a complex range of cutting tools, specifically designed to accomplish Advanced Joinery’s requirements for production of both traditional and contemporary windows and doors. “We have a total of 44 individual tools available to us,” explains Lee, “and many of the individual tools incorporate several discreet cutting profiles which provides us with almost infinite flexibility to create intricate designs or replicate historical features for architectural restoration projects.” The tools are arranged in two banks: one to the right hand side of the machine, where 12 regular tools are stored, and a further 32 tools stored in the automatic tool-changer which travels in tandem with the moving gantry for rapid tool changes on the fly. “We are delighted with the new Accord;” says Lee, “the combination of the machining technology, the software, and our own creativity, allows us to create stunning windows, doors, arches and, more importantly, we can reproduce the same pieces, exactly matching, and in a fraction of the time it would take using traditional joinery methods. Now we are up to speed with operating knowledge and tooling, we conservatively predict that this investment could enable us to double current turnover.” Ian McCarthy concludes: “It has been a pleasure dealing with Advanced Joinery; Lee’s outlook is progressive and forwardlooking and he has, without doubt, maximised the benefits afforded by the investment in CNC technology.”

SOFTWARE - CASE STUDY Cabinet Vision “Costs Money, But Saves A Lot More,” Says Bespoke Carcass Pioneer A company which pioneered both bespoke carcasses and nesting in the Irish Republic says the Cabinet Vision software which designs their products and drives their two CNC nesters, beam saw and boring machine, means they can produce exactly what customers want, and it saves on waste. Donal Walshe saw an opening in the Irish furniture market for bespoke carcasses in 2008, and established Turin Components to begin manufacturing them. “At the time there were a lot of imported carcasses, but we were the first to manufacture curved units of any shape and size that the customer required. And having seen how efficient nesting could be on a visit to a company in England, he decided to focus on nesting as the most cost effective way of cutting MFC and MDF carcasses for kitchens, bedrooms, offices, bathrooms and student accommodation. The company also produces hospital cabinets manufactured in the revolutionary waterproof and anti-bacterial material, Sealwise. Today they have two Andi nesters programmed by Cabinet Vision’s Screen-ToMachine module, and are considering investing in a third next year. Padraig Mullin is Project Manager and programmer for the nesting process. “I input every job into Cabinet Vision, and finalise the design, and type and colour of material, along with drawers and hinges. I have a database of existing units in the Cabinet Vision library, and it’s so easy to manipulate one of those to come up with what the customer requires. If I move a shelf, Cabinet Vision automatically moves the shelf studs…if I change a door size it moves all the associated fixtures and fittings. For instance, if it’s a base unit I simply edit the size, depth and height, and then optimise it in

Screen-To-Machine and send the NC code to whichever Andi has been assigned to the job.” As an example of how easy Cabinet Vision handles Turin Components’ bespoke speciality, he cites a recent case where 18 cabinets for a customer’s showroom were all different off-standard sizes, and one of the display units required a full line of 2mm centred holes to fasten dividers in place. The former hands-on chippy says it was simple to edit a unit to provide the holes in their unique positioning. Another Cabinet Vision benefit is optimising material usage. “The average nest has between 20 and 30 components, and once I’ve designed them all I nest them on to our standard 2800 x 2700 chipboard sheets, and it keeps waste to an absolute minimum. Reducing waste is another important factor for Donal Walshe when it comes to their Prima EVO beam saw, and he says Cabinet Vision makes best use of the sheet by planning out cut patterns more efficiently than proprietary software, and is especially useful if there is a requirement for the grain to go a particular way. It also measures out and pre-plans the boring pattern, on their REM boring machine. It’s Brendan Sheridan’s role to program both the beam saw and the REM. He says: “It’s so simple to set up both processes from information about each panel that’s in the Cabinet Vision program. Previously, we had to program everything at the machines themselves, which was a matter of breaking every cabinet down size by size and programming it individually, which was far more time consuming.” Overall, Cabinet Vision’s optimisation and ability to reduce waste are major benefits for both Turin Components’ nesting and beam saw operations, along with speeding up the design process. Donal Walshe says: “If we had to manually work out all the cuts, turns, cams and hole positions, and pre-plan every gable, we’d never produce anything. The software does cost money – but it saves us an awful lot more.” His design and programming team are mainly former kitchen retailers or fitters, so are readily able to solve any issues regarding customer requests for something that may be particularly difficult to achieve. “We have a first class reputation throughout Ireland for

producing bespoke cabinets, and Cabinet Vision is a vital part of our service in giving people the exact kitchen they ask for.” And it’s not just the actual CAD/CAM suite from Vero Software that he is impressed with. “You can have the best and most powerful software on the market, but if it doesn’t have the right support behind it, it’s no good to you. Alphacam – EMP’s Gateway To Impossible Projects EMP Furniture Ltd is a bespoke fitted furniture specialist offering a complete service from design through to the full turnkey solution. Alphacam software allows them to undertake projects they could not have attempted previously. Not only is it allowing us to save materials giving cost savings, we are also undertaking projects which we would otherwise be unable to do.” Three examples of projects completed which he says would be impossible to manufacture without utilising Alphacam: Galway County Council Chamber (Oval desk): "This large desk was manufactured utilising various materials, delivered to site in several sections which were either fixed or movable, and contained integrated services such as cable management for microphone and data points. The project required pinpoint accuracy during manufacture so that all components fitted in a seamless fashion when they were assembled on site, which would not be possible by traditional means." Allergan Biologics 2 (Trespa units): "We manufactured a large number of clinical units entirely from Trespa. Due to the compact nature of the material and jointing methods to be utilised we knew from the outset that this project must be manufactured using Alphacam. Machining included operations such as countersinking, drilling holes, pocketing, grooving, jointing, chamfering and nesting - all of which were viewed in a simulation prior to manufacture.”

Waste was reduced and joints were seamless when installed.” Noel Mullarkey says the vast majority of their products are processed on the CNC machine at some stage of the manufacturing process for routing, drilling and nesting operations. “It’s so easy to import a drawing from Autocad into Alphacam. We find the simulation feature is particularly valuable as it shows the finished component in a real-life environment before we commence machining. We also use the nesting functionality to quantify materials and show the products on the sheet material.” On occasion the Alphacam support portal has helped them with queries about the software, as well as advising on machining strategies, tools, feeds and speeds for specific projects. “Updates in the last couple of years have focused on automation, making it even easier and quicker to use, therefore we always keep up to date with the latest twiceyearly releases.” This philosophy is in line

Introducing Combilift’s New Combi-CS Pedestrian Stacker Combilift’s new Counterbalanced Stacker the Combi-CS - represents a further move by the multidirectional forklift specialist into the pedestrian operated truck sector. With a load capacity of 1000kg @ 500mm, this walk behind stacker can work in the smallest operating aisles for a machine of its type and lift capacity. DCS Maximise Broadley Group’s Investment Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has recently completed the installation and commissioning of a new energy-saving dust extraction system for the Leeds-based Broadley Group. DCS conservatively predict that the installation, for the Group’s joinery shop, will realise power savings of over 50%. From its roots as a small family decorating business, founded in 1963 by Arthur Broadley, the business now provides building construction, maintenance and refurbishment services. Although Broadley’s now operates with around 200 employees, the business still exudes family values; Gary Broadley is joint chairman, and the workforce now includes many second generation employees. Combining modern methods of working with traditional craftsmanship, the Joinery division offers bespoke and general manufacture, including shop fronts, reception counters, and kitchen & bedroom furniture, as well as providing commercial joinery services to other Broadley divisions. At Broadley Group, DCS engineers undertook a full site survey which also included a free energy-saving appraisal. The workshop was well-equipped with a range of classical machinery, various saws, and a 4-sided planer moulder but, in addition, the new extraction system had to be designed to accommodate a recently installed wide belt sander, and also provide capacity for planned future investment in production machinery; almost doubling the current extraction requirement. Although the anticipated total extraction capacity

requirement would be over 30,000m3, DCS were able to recommend a new filter unit with a capacity of just 18,500m3. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at DCS, explains: “The existing extraction system was already working at capacity, operating 10 hours a day, 5 days a week, and planned investment in new machinery had precipitated a comprehensive upgrade of the extraction system. However, the nature of the work produced at Broadley means that much of the specialist machinery is only used infrequently, and a significant percentage of the 70,000kWh currently consumed every year by the fan was wasted energy. DCS were able to demonstrate conclusively that a new, high-performance filter, combined with an ECOGATE® extraction optimisation system, would provide the required extraction from all machines – but only when they were in use.” DCS have installed and commissioned an externally-sited NFSZ3000 2HJLR modular filter with pressure-free discharge of collected waste, via a rotary valve, into an enclosed skip. The filter construction includes two explosion relief panels to comply with ATEX requirements and, as recommended by ATEX regulations, a CARZ explosion isolation flap valve is also included between the fan outlet and the filter inlet; preventing the effect of pressure wave and flames, in the event of an explosion, from travelling upstream in the ductwork in which it is mounted. In the workshop, all machines are fitted with Ecogate motorised gates which open and close automatically when an individual machine comes on or offline. The Ecogate signals a change in extraction requirement to the Ecogate greenBOX® 12+ controller, which in turn instructs the Ecogate PowerMASTER variable speed drive inverter unit to adjust the fan speed accordingly. The 30kW fan is precisely regulated to optimise power usage and the net result is a system that will be saving Broadley Group at least 52% on electric bills in the coming year, and will give a return on the investment within 4 years.

Extraction ducting was redesigned throughout the workshop and several machines were fitted with new machine hoods fabricated from fully-welded, heavy gauge mild steel. Return air ductwork allows cleaned warm air to be returned to the building in winter and discharged to atmosphere in summer by the manual operation of summer/winter dampers. The filter unit is fitted with patented antistatic Superbag filter media, and the system also features a reverse air filter regeneration fan. Keith Abbott, Joinery Manager at Broadley Group, had nothing but praise for DCS: “We were highly delighted with the service we received from Melvyn and the team of engineers and, as an added bonus, we now have a much quieter office environment… the difference this installation has made is something of a step change for Broadley; on both production and financial fronts.”

WOODWASTE Joinery Company Uses Waste Wood To Save Or Make Money A joinery company in Tunbridge Wells has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs. Phase One Joinery has been established 29 years, and provides a bespoke joinery service manufacturing items such as doors, windows, staircases, cupboards and furniture as well as architectural joinery projects such as decking, conservatories and fireplaces. Based on a farm, with limited options for heating, the business had been used to spending about £1500 a year on oil for its warm air heating system – but when the company moved to a larger workshop on the same location, the team found themselves without any heating source at all, so had to start looking for heating solutions. The owner of another joinery company recommended he speak with Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology. Nigel was impressed with the range of heaters manufactured by Wood Waste Technology at its headquarters in Staffordshire, and especially liked the ability to add a summer heat dump, to allow waste wood to continue to be burnt throughout the hotter months, by sending the heat direct to atmosphere. After a quote and site survey, Phase One Joinery ordered a WT10 heater, to provide much needed heating for the workshop in winter, but also to provide free disposal of the large amount

of waste wood generated from the manufacturing process. The WT10 was installed at Phase One Joinery’s new 5000 sq ft unit by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, who even managed to utilise some existing trunking to vent the heat around the workshop area and mezzanine floor. Having previously invested in a briquetting machine, Phase One Joinery also has the ability to recycle some of its wood waste into briquettes, which, depending on the time of year, can be sold or used in the wood waste heater. Nigel says: “The team at Wood Waste Technology helped us tremendously, and we’ve definitely made the right decision for our business by buying the WT10 - it’s marvellous. Our waste disposal bills have reduced tremendously, saving us over ÂŁ2000 a year, plus we no longer have the ÂŁ1500 annual cost that we were previously spending on heating. In addition, we can now use any unsold briquettes ourselves, as they burn really well in the wood waste heater!â€? Dustraction Goes To Hospital (Metalcraft) Hospital Metalcraft, whose registered trading name is Bristol Maid, has retained Dustraction to handle expansion by the Wessex company at their factory in Blandford Forum, in Dorset, and replacement of their existing dust extraction layout. The hospital network serviced by HM continues to expand and the range of cabinets and sick-room furniture products by the Dorset company is increasing within a buoyant replacement and refurbishment hospital sector marketplace. Those of us unfortunate enough to have been hospitalised may well have encountered the specialist bedside cabinet furniture by Hospital Metalcraft. Cabinets and support furniture are all part of an innovative range of tables, trolleys, roomdividers and specialist cabinet furniture produced by HM and supplied through the hospital network under the Bristol Maid brand name. The new dust filter at HM is powered by a ruggedly constructed Dustrax No. 40PB heavy duty, vee-belt driven fan-set especially designed to handle the woodwaste loads now being generated by Hospital Metalcraft. The filter delivers 20,000m /hour and is equipped with two automatic shaker mechanisms for periodic removal of surplus cake dust build-up on the filter sleeves during the course of a working day and again on plant shut down. Waste is transferred into the end of a hopper section via the main floor-mounted extraction fan-set and is discharged through a heavy duty, ruggedly constructed rotary valve airseal which has been specially designed to handle HM’s increasing woodwaste loads. The two shaker mechanisms are powered by 0.37kW unidirectional electric motors and are housed in a secure cabinet with protective doors for easy access to the filter media for periodic inspection and maintenance; the assembly overall is guaranteed maintenance-free and sealed for life.
