TRAINING Operator Training At A New High Daltons Wadkin put safety in the workplace top of their agenda A PIABC quality assured centre for woodworking machine operator training, Daltons Wadkin are expanding their activities in this sector and have now opened a fully equipped training workshop and classroom at their Nottingham headquarters in order to provide an alternative to their regular ‘on-site’ training. The workshop is equipped with a range of classical machines with full extraction and tooling and is permanently available for use by students either singly or in groups. Training courses can be arranged on specific or individual machine types or across the full range of equipment, a dedicated classroom is available for further study and participants can take advantage of comprehensive and fully illustrated training manuals for each machine type. Daltons Wadkin have recently appointed two new fully qualified and experienced training personnel who will interchange between the ‘in-house’ facility and their day to day training on-site at customers’ premises. Equipped with transport and a range of tooling to suit different training requirements, and of course their by now well known ‘red tops’, the trainers cover the whole of the UK and Ireland providing certificated operator training for individuals or large groups on site using the machinery they employ on a day to day basis. Courses are individually tailored and cover a diverse range of needs with the common objective of achieving safe and best use of woodworking machinery. Training covers most types of machine from small classical models up to CNC and schemes are available both for beginners and more experienced operators as well as refresher training when required.

Trainers Nigel and Lee prepare machines for a training session

Clients range from small businesses with limited workshop facilities to high production joinery and furniture manufacturers, aerospace and automotive industries, public authorities and government departments. Francis Dalton commented, “Demand is on the increase for these services and as a major supplier of woodworking machinery we regard it as an obligation to be able to provide top class operator training wherever it is required. Our customer base is expanding and we are going to need more trainers to keep up but importantly we go to great lengths to ensure that every training session, large or small, is conducted professionally and efficiently by our own fully qualified personnel. As part of the service we also provide health and safety

information in order to help our customers keep up with the latest regulations and to ensure that their machinery is PUWER compliant and also carry out risk assessments when required. We are aiming high but whether provided as a stand-alone service or an add-on benefit to our machine sales we plan to both expand the operation and continue to drive up standards and expertise in this area.” Daltons Wadkin worked hard to ensure that their training activities meet the most professional standards and were rewarded by receiving the coveted PIABC Quality Approval in 2015. The evolution of perfection Entry level with a touch of class

CASE STUDY - SAWS From Entry Level To Industrial Production HOLZMA Saws Lead The Field German engineering company, HOLZMA, is the world’s leading beam saw manufacturer. For the engineers at HOLZMA, however, it’s not just about designing efficient saws. Their remit is to create solutions that are guaranteed to make daily manufacturing quicker, more accurate and more efficient. Their goal is to improve product quality, prevent errors and increase both flexibility and output. This approach has enabled HOLZMA to take the basic beam saw and develop it into an advanced piece of machinery which does much more than simply size panels. One of its most popular ranges is the 300 Series, designed for small to medium sized enterprises.

HOLZMA 300 Series – Compact, technically advanced beam saws The 300 Series models are technically advanced machines that have set the standard for beam saws worldwide. The HPP 300 is the base model, but its specification is anything but standard. It’s a compact and powerful saw featuring an 80 mm saw blade projection, an exceptionally smooth running saw carriage and low energy consumption. Optional extras include increased cutting

height, ascending and vertical post forming packages, pneumatic trim stops, manual angle cuts, high precision laser guide beam, kerfing, a label printer, a stress-release cut option and Magi-Cut optimisation software packages. More recently, an Easy2Feed option has been developed which offers automatic feeding at a budget price and can be retrofitted to both the HPP 300 and 250 models. The core element of Easy2Feed is a compact scissor lift table which is perfect for loading with a forklift truck. The HPL 300 model features an integrated lift table for automatic feeding to speed up production and boost throughput. At the top of the HOLZMA 300 Series range is the HKL 300 angular system which is, in effect, two saws in one, permitting simultaneous rip and cross cutting for higher output. Completing the 300 Series range is the HKL 300 combiLine. This breakthrough machine enables cutting and routing on a HOLZMA angular saw which delivers many benefits. Flexible and highly cost efficient, it virtually eliminates extra work steps for recuts, resulting in a fully automated cut-to-size operation for batchsize-1 customers at very high speed.

Borley Laminates invests in a HOLZMA HPP 300 to get a reliable, high quality saw Borley Laminates, trading as Willis Systems, provides a wide variety of washroom products from budget toilet cubicles to fully designed bespoke washroom solutions. “A reliable, high quality beam saw is the bedrock of our business,” explains Joe Borley a director of the company. He continues, “We cut, drill, rout and edge an enormous number and variety of panels to make up our washroom solutions and so we have to have machinery we can count on day in, day out. “As far as we are concerned, you can’t beat German engineering and that is why we have invested heavily in equipment from HOMAG UK. We’ve run HOLZMA beam saws for many years and, when it came to upgrading our saw, HOLZMA was again top of our list. “Our new HPP 300 has sped up our manufacturing processes by around 2530% and yet the quality and accuracy remains absolutely first class. The cuts are square with no chipping, so they don’t have to go to another machine for finishing.”

HOLZMA HPL 500 – increased capacity with reliability for high quality products at Eureka Display

HOMAG UK – a first class friendly and professional service “Our contact at HOMAG UK, Andy Potter, is very straightforward. He tells it like it is, so you know exactly where you stand and you can trust him one hundred percent. Along with the installation engineers, Andy makes the whole specifying and installation process very easy. “As a consequence, the installation of the new saw went like clockwork. HOMAG’s engineers worked alongside our team, training them to ensure they were ready to hit the ground running as soon as the installation was complete. “In terms of support, HOMAG UK are brilliant. Any issues are sorted straightaway whether it’s for our HOLZMA saws, BRANDT edgebanders or WEEKE CNCs,” concludes Joe Borley.

HOLZMA HPL 500 – a powerful industrial level beam saw with automatic feeding The HOLZMA HPL 500 is equipped with a heavy-duty lift table for automatic feeding. This significantly speeds up the manufacturing process. This machine can cut lengths of up to 6500 mm and offers a saw blade projection of up to 170 mm with

extremely accurate saw blade positioning via a ball-screw spindle. It also features improved dust extraction for a cleaner environment. The saw’s body is made of HOLZMA’s unique SORB TECH® construction, making it very robust and truly accurate, delivering up to ten times better vibration dampening, 20% higher sound absorption, 30% longer saw blade life and 40% lower consumption of primary energy during production. The HPL 500 has a rugged clamping system designed for continuous, multi-shift operation, and a precise and accurate program fence with electromagnetic measuring system that guarantees positioning accuracy of +/- 0.1 mm, therefore minimising trim and dust cuts.

HOLZMA HPL 500 delivers for Eureka Display Wakefield based Eureka Display is the UK’s foremost manufacturer of shopfitting equipment. It claims to be the choice of many leading shopfitters for three key reasons: firstly, it uses only top grade, quality materials; secondly, it offers an almost infinite range of finishes and finally, it is reliable, turning round orders quickly and delivering on time.

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

“To maintain this level of service, we have to have machinery we can rely on,” comments Ashley Littlewood, company manager at Eureka Display. He continues, “It has to be accurate, fast and yet provide quality results every time. “Our old Giben saw had performed well over the years but when it came to replacing it, we knew exactly what we wanted. As a matter of course, we carried out due diligence in the market place, but nothing came close to offering the benefits the HOLZMA saw delivers. “Dealing with John Shepherd and HOMAG UK made life very easy. There’s no toing and froing, John knows what he’s talking about, offers a fair price and gets the deal done. HOMAG UK arranged everything including the crane to install the machine and Ian Smith, the installation engineer, was extremely tidy and efficient. The result was virtually no downtime during the installation process and after four days of training we were up to full speed. “The woodWOP and Magi-Cut optimising software are easy to use. MagiCut enables us to do all the sizing work in the office, provide a quote over the phone and then send the job direct to the saw, so it’s very efficient and saves time.

CASE STUDY - SAWS

HOLZMA HPP 130 has doubled board processing capacity for Ruddy Joinery

“We cut a lot of MDF sheet material and the bigger blade diameter on the HPL 500 enables us to cut seven sheets at a time, instead of the five we used to be able to do with the old saw. So all in all, the new HOLZMA gives us the increase in capacity we need whilst maintaining the high quality and reliability that we demand,” concludes Ashley Littlewood.

Enter the world of high precision manufacturing with the HOLZMA HPP 130 The new HOLZMA HPP 130 costs little more than a conventional table circular saw, but cuts single panels to a much higher level of precision and does so far more efficiently. With a 60 mm saw blade projection, it is ideal for processing single panels and small batches. The HPP 130’s three air cushion tables, each 500 mm wide, make for easy and gentle panel handling. The machine is controlled with HOLZMA’s proven CADmatic software which is both easy to use and has been developed especially for production processes in panel dividing.

HOLZMA HPP 130 doubles board processing capacity for Ruddy Joinery “Our decision to buy a HOLZMA HPP 130 was part of a larger investment strategy to increase the capacity of the business,” explains Adrian Glover, general manager of Flitwick based Ruddy Joinery & Fit-Out Specialists. He continues, “We were looking to double the capacity of our board and veneer processing to keep pace with expansion in the bespoke joinery, as well as the high end off-site washroom market which we entered four years ago. “The washroom products require a high volume of processing of laminate, melamine and Corian boards which meant we would need a new saw and 5-axis CNC machine to cope with this increase in volume. The saw, however, didn’t need to be an all-singing, alldancing mass feeding machine. “Also, it had to have a small footprint as space in the production facility is at a premium. The HOLZMA HPP 130 fitted the bill perfectly. It uses the same software as our other HOMAG Group machinery and so using Magi-Cut can be ‘talked to’ and programmed from the office upstairs.

“We have been fans of HOMAG Group equipment for a long time; they are by some margin one of the better manufacturers. More importantly, perhaps, they have a good support structure. Machines go wrong, that’s a fact of life, so you need to buy from a company that can solve issues quickly and efficiently. HOMAG UK provide that support, it really is a complete package. “Everything from the installation of the saw, to the training and support is slick, exactly what you’d expect from the world leader in woodworking machinery. Our calculations show that the HOLZMA HPP 130 will pay for itself within 18 months. It is more accurate than the old saw and has doubled our capacity in board processing, vastly reducing the number of night shifts we have to run to avoid bottlenecks. “The people at HOMAG UK are a pleasure to deal with. They are professional, they know their business inside out and do not give you the hard sell because they know they’ve got great products,” concludes Adrian Glover. William Hughes Shares Spring Making Secrets On YouTube Ever wondered how springs are made? William Hughes Ltd, one of the UK’s foremost spring makers, has produced a video demonstrating the manufacturing processes involved in producing the hundreds of thousands of bespoke springs delivered to customers each week. The considerations that go into the manufacture of even the simplest spring are legion but when you’re producing high quality springs to order for such industries as aerospace, automotive, medical and food processing, it’s easy to understand why so much care and attention is vested in a seemingly simple component. To see the video, just go to YouTube and enter “William Hughes – A Better Spring”. The video follows the evolution of a small compression spring from concept and design through coil winding and high

temperature stress relief. Each spring is then ground flat at both ends before being subjected to shot peening in order to achieve the ten million cycles required for its working life. Next comes an inorganic finishing treatment called Delta Tone where colour is added to the spring for identification purposes. Finally, the springs are subjected to scragging – a pre-stressing process that compresses the spring to near solid and then load tests each and every one to ensure that they meet the tight tolerances required. To gain a better understanding of the intricacies of spring making, check out www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBW__XijPsQ& feature=youtu.be and enjoy every stage of the process in action. A Helping Hand from Felder Back in November of last year Woodworkx2Composite’s purpose built workshop full of Felder machinery was burnt to the ground in an arson attack that left nothing standing. Fortunately like a phoenix from the flame they have managed to rebuild and move on from the tragic incident and are beginning to grow again. Owner Mark Dabner said “We had invested in a huge amount of machinery, cutting equipment for timber and furniture making. We also had two offices kitted out with the latest design equipment and CAD drawings. Everything went up in the fire and we had nothing left” and continued to say “After the fire Felder Group UK helped us to get back on our feet, helping us to source machines we could use to get the business up and running again and always being on hand to help when we needed it”. Woodworkx2Composite now provide a complete CNC routing and joinery service with in-house design and finishing facilities. Their slogan is “Where technology meets tradition” and using modern technology such as the profit H200 from Felder’s Format-4 range and a number of traditional methods of woodworking they truly are able to make anything! Button-Fix Secret Panel Fixing Innovation Acknowledged Invisible panel fixing Button-fix has been granted a patent, acknowledging its innovative design. Offering a secret, secure, removable fixing option for architects and fitters, all of its components are designed and manufactured in the UK. Designed with both fitters and architects in mind, Button-fix fasteners are extremely versatile, suitable for parallel and 90o connections, horizontal and vertical applications as well as being rebatable for applications where panel-to-panel contact is necessary. A key design feature of the fixings is that the panels are easily removable. This provides essential access to often hard-toreach areas, for example, underneath a bath or boxed-in pipework. This is also extremely beneficial for busy commercial environments in the case of accidental damage, as a single panel can simply be removed and replaced. Furthermore, the durable nylon Buttons

that are attached to each panel are intuitively coloured to denote application, with the lime green Button for use with CSK wood screws and orange Buttons to be used with Varianta Euro screws. Button-fix fixtures also offer the required structural strength for use in the commercial environment. For example, a vertical panel weighing 200kg can be safely secured and supported with just four Type 1 Fixes. Julie Freedman, Head of Sales and Marketing, said: “The design of Button-fix is truly unique and we’re excited that this has now been recognised with a patent. “We understand that fitters are increasingly under pressures of time and expectation when it comes to delivering projects to exact architectural plans. “Consequently, Button-fix was designed to allow for panel fixings to be the truest representation of the architects plans, enabling complicated panel arrangements

with precise intersections to be aligned and fitted quickly and efficiently, significantly reducing the time required on site.”

David Clouting New Decofoil Stock Items David Clouting starts off 2017 by introducing five new Decofoil stock items. The new decors are a mixture of two solid concrete textured vinyls and three woods. Woods, solid colours and natural materials are being used across the different surfaces of kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, and the new vinyl foils enable style to be added to the MDF door. The combination of pressing foil to shaped MDF panels is a key stylistic differential to the flat look of many furniture ranges, and provides greater design options. Natural materials are being replicated in vinyl with new texture developments that progress in quality and authenticity. A new K9 Concrete texture has been created by LG Hausys, and has been manufactured in conjunction with a solid colour vinyl to produce an on-trend solid coloured concrete. Two colours have been developed with the new K9 Concrete texture – light grey (item reference KADR4-K9) and cashmere (item reference NCAB4-K9). Both colours are highly popular across door décor ranges, and combined with the new Concrete texture, will be commercial for consumers to design into their new kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. Three new woods have been brought into the extensive stock range that David Clouting invests in and supplies from the UK. The trend for solid colours over recent years is still popular, but there is a move towards mixing some woods into product ranges to provide a wider variety of style. The combination of solid colour and wood within a kitchen is enabling designers to provide a

contemporary and stylish traditional look, and break up the uniformity of a single coloured display. The three new woods have been developed in conjunction with Pfleiderer, who supply the matching MFC and MDF, using papers supplied by Schattdecor. Two of the woods have the same print and are contrasting colour tones called Light and Dark Springfield Oak. Light Springfield Oak (item reference Y2109-Q3) is a natural looking straight-grained oak, which will be easy to introduce and mix into the neutral tones currently being used. Dark Springfield Oak (item reference Y2110-Q3) is a lovely dark brown oak, which highlights the Mirain printing technique that LG Hausys uses, to enhance vinyl in replicating the look of wood veneer. Natural Chalet Oak (item reference Y1610-Q5) has some character to the print and is a natural mid tone, which lends itself to a traditional look, but as you’d expect from LG, with the style and quality that consumers and designers want from their surface materials. DECORATIVE SURFACES Swiss Krono’s One World Collection Offers The Realistic Look Of Timber In An Easy Maintenance Material The warmth, depth of colour and tactile properties of timber have made it the material of the moment in interior design. It is ideal for applications including kitchen cabinetry, shelving and bedroom and bathroom furniture and has emerged as a strong trend for furniture in commercial, retail, hotel and leisure projects. Advances in print and surface technology mean that furniture manufacturers get the ‘best of both worlds’ with woodgrain finishes. Laminates and MFC mirror the natural beauty and warmth of timber yet offer the benefits of UV fade-resistant hard-wearing materials that are easy to maintain. The products are very easy to machine and work with compared to natural timber, with no need for sanding, sealing or re-sealing. Swiss Krono, with its expertise in wood based materials, is at the vanguard of advanced decorative printing and perfectly matched inline embossed surface textures. Reflecting the trend for timbers, the company’s new One World collection of decorative panels features a choice of over 30 woodgrain finishes in six realistic textures that each offer a different tactile look and feel. One World woodgrains include popular sellers such ash, elm, beech, walnut, marron and hickory, timeless golden oaks. Recognising that grey is the design colour of the moment, woodgrains with a complementary grey base tone are highly sought after by designers and One World designs such as Barcelona Walnut and Dublin Oak have been developed to meet this demand. The beauty of woodgrains is that they combine readily with a wide range of colours from pure white to more organic hues, giving furniture manufacturers and designers the flexibility to take any piece of furniture and create very different looks depending on what they are combined with. Says Paul Mullings, Export Sales Director for Swiss Krono: “Our One World décors and perfectly matched textures emulate

natures finest elements in a product that’s easy to work with and is also easy to maintain. Our fashionable woodgrains have been developed with such an attention to detail that they are hard to tell from the real thing. With the flexibility to choose from different substrates to suit manufacturing needs, One World decorative panels are ideal for both domestic and commercial settings.” The comprehensive collection includes a creative choice of 253 options in total, with a wide selection of new designs and surface textures in metallics, abstracts, concretes and plain colours in addition to woodgrains. All the One World woodgrains are available as a melamine or a laminate, including all registered embossed décors, with matching ABS edging as standard. They can all be combined with a variety of different substrates including chipboard, MDF of all types (including both fire and water resistant) and compact density fibreboard (CDF). The One World Collection is exclusively available through International Decorative Surfaces who have 13 branches nationwide. Each décor is available in five working days from order and has no minimum order quantity, offering unrivalled flexibility. IDS is also holding the most popular-selling decors, plus a selection of bespoke designs, ex-stock which can be delivered to a customer’s door in just 24-48 hours. A premium quality Design Box is available for the collection. This includes three distinct swatch fans for woodgrains, colours and metallics to see and appreciate every décor, plus a lifestyle brochure and fold out swatch chart offering the full range to view. First Glimpse Of The New EGGER KBB Decorative Collection EGGER UK is offering customers a sneak online-only preview of its new 2017 decorative collection – featuring its biggest-ever portfolio of decors for the KBB sector. Specifically compiled for the UK and Ireland furniture manufacturing industry, the EGGER Decorative Collection features 170 decors, 114 of them with matching laminates available from stock. There are 44 new designs and two new textures. It aims to raise the bar in wood-based panels, MDF and laminates with amazing new woodgrains and uni combination colours. It will also introduce a range of services including a new App and room visualisation software. Although EGGER is keeping full details of the new collection under wraps until launch time in January, it is providing a sneak preview www.egger.com/furniture-collection. Elliott Fairlie, head of décor development, said: “The EGGER 2017 Decorative Collection is the most comprehensive we have ever launched on the market and has a new approach based around customer needs. “This is our answer to fast trends, the increasing complexity of product ranges, and the shortening shelf-life of products. It replaces what was previously known as the company’s Zoom collection. “Although we are continuing to expand our range of innovative reproductions such as concrete and metal, the emphasis continues to be on woodgrains – with oak still the unchallenged number one trend.” One decor direction Elliott predicts as being particularly strong over the next few years is 'handcrafted' style oaks that continue EGGER’s quest to produce woodgrain reproductions that are warm, tactile and visually indistinguishable from the real thing. Accent edging is also attracting interest – with striking new

visual effects on offer, and he predicts that contrast edging is going to be huge in the KBB market these create that certain attention to detail that is currently so popular in the market. Featured in the preview is Davos Oak, that gives a white oiled oak surface effect whilst maintaining the natural features of oak. The knots, light highlights, dark colour interplay and white pore all contribute to achieving natural colour accents that allows for combinations with neutral solid colours from white to grey. The second Davos Oak colour is Truffle Brown, that is more of a warm brown tone but which also displays a multitude of colour variations. Dark, almost black elements can be found, as well as light pore variants. Graphite Denver Oak corresponds to the classic style of a natural oak with smaller knots and a lightly planked effect. This oak displays a lot of colour interplay and is perfectly suited for combinations with a variety of uni colours.

dp - Limitless, the Final Piece of the Jigsaw The Decorative Panels Group have always been innovators in the latest materials and technologies and 2017 will see this tradition continue with the launch of the new dp-limitless range by Decorative Panels Lamination. Commissioning of the brand new laminating line is well underway within dp-lamination’s 140,000ft2 manufacturing facility which is located in Elland, West Yorkshire, with the first trial materials due for lamination imminently. The laminator will utilise a high bond strength PUR glue line which will ensure a superb overall finish on sheet sizes up to 3660 x 1430mm, (although 2440mm x 1220mm and 3050mm x 1220mm will make up the majority of the offer) in quantities from one sheet upwards. The range of surface finishes currently available from Decorative Panels Lamination under the banners of dp-decor and dp-specialist is already one of the largest and most diverse in the UK. Comprising over 100 woodgrain and solid colour designs within dp-decor and exceeding 200 surfaces designs within dp-specialist including; high gloss and matt acrylics, PVCs and PPs, it could be argued that Decorative Panels already have all the bases covered – so why launch dp-limitless? Group Managing Director Guy Metcalfe takes up the story “…dplimitless is a logical extension of our offer and one that we have been researching for some time now. Decorative Panels Lamination has always been known as a business that offers a wide range of products on very quick lead times to a very wide market place. We have been innovators in terms of substrate as well as surface materials, being the first people in the UK to offer a sheet light

weight hollowcore board solution and surface finishes such as BioCote Quartz, the first commercially available anti-microbial sheet material. We wanted to continue this innovative approach and address an area of the market that we had never been near before – that is the manufacture and supply of a range of specialised decorative and high performance products available without commitment to bulk quantities and deliverable from single sheets up to full load quantities – from stock. It is our intention to offer exactly what the brand says, a limitless offer of surface finishes bonded to the substrate of choice, available in quantities as low as one sheet. We will of course have some products that will form a core range within the dp-limitless offer including; High Pressure Laminates from two of the worlds most recognised producers, the full range of Senoplast Acrylics, 2mm Senoplast Acrylglass, Real Stone Veneer, Faux Leather, Wood Veneer, Technical surfaces, and of course, one off, one of a kind surfaces. It has always been our intention to be able to offer absolutely everything within the field of lamination, dp-limitless along with our existing brands gives us the final piece in the jigsaw." HOMAG’s 5-Axis CNC Machines – More Affordable Than Ever Historically there has been a perception in the market, particularly amongst smaller manufacturers, that 5-axis processing centres could only be afforded by the larger companies. As the need for faster production times and more bespoke and complex production increased, however, technological advances have meant that price levels have fallen, so now even the smaller manufacturers can invest in 5-axis CNC machinery. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at HOMAG UK explains, “Over the last three to four years, the HOMAG Group has been working on making 5-axis technology more affordable for all levels of manufacturing. The result has been a range of machines with a variety of functions, including routing, sawing, drilling and edgebanding units which are customisable for each level of the market. With the added ability to provide complete cycle production, these CNC machines can reduce the amount of equipment needed, keep running costs low and yet maintain

high quality production with fast output rates.”

Customisable processing with optional table solutions HOMAG’s range of 5-axis processing centres is available with three different table options. The popular pod and rail table consists of vacuum suction pods attached to a moving rail system. This securely holds the work piece in place, preventing it from moving whilst eliminating damage to the table or tools during processing. This table can be used with a large variety of size and material types. With quick set up times, the pod and rail table is an ideal system for companies, such as bespoke manufacturers, who change work piece material and size regularly or only produce small batches. The pod and rail table is also available with clamps instead of vacuum pods for more precise and detailed wood processing. The second table option, the flat matrix

table, holds larger components in place using a large surface vacuum system. For smaller, individual parts the flat table lends itself nicely to holding jig fixtures or specific clamps to allow intricate 5-axis machining to take place. The final table option, a twin tabled router, splits the pod and rail tables into two machines in effect allowing them to operate independently. This means one table can be carrying out a process such as drilling or routing whilst the other table’s work pieces are exchanged. The dual function of HOMAG’s twin tabled routers means manufacturing downtime is significantly reduced due to the intelligent software that drives the machine. Not only does this produce faster and more efficiently than conventional routers, it can also accommodate up to four tool heads to be used synchronously. This is extremely beneficial to manufacturers as it allows complete cycle production using just one machine.

The highly versatile 5-axis processing centres available with a large range of tools

Flexible axis options for swift tool multi-tasking with the HOMAG 500 series CNCs The 500 series is freely configurable allowing users to choose from several different combinations including 5-axis alone, 3+5-axis, 4+5-axis and 5+5 axis. This offers increased flexibility, including multiple head changes with the large range of tools available. The machine operator can therefore save time during the manufacturing process with faster tool changes which shorten the cycle time. The variety of tools available for HOMAG’s 5-axis processing centres provides tailored solutions for each company’s needs. With capabilities including sawing, routing and drilling, the highly versatile machines can have up to three processing units individually mounted for fast tool exchange. The HOMAG Group also has additional tools available which equip the 5-axis with edgebanding capabilities. The 500 series can be fitted with either PowerEdge, which uses tape and glue or the technically advanced laserTec unit for premium quality zero-joint edgebanding.

Fast and simple programming with woodWOP software For increased simplicity, HOMAG’s CNC processing centres operate with its woodWOP software as standard. This reduces the need for complex third party software. Using 3D graphics, this fast and intuitive software system offers operators flexible machine programming with simple navigation on HOMAG’s powerTouch operating screens. The full multi-touch HD monitor adds to the simplicity of HOMAG CNC processing centres.

Success with UK Installations With the HOMAG Group producing around 1,500 processing centres a year, the flexibility of the range makes them a perfect solution for the joinery or panel market. A large number of these 5-axis installations have been in the UK, creating specialist solutions for both entry level and larger sized manufacturers. The HOMAG Venture 316 5-axis machine has brought huge productivity gains to Terry Smiths who manufacture coffins and caskets for the funeral services

market. Not only has the machine delivered reduced production times, but also a significant saving to its bottom line, resulting in a faster return on investment. Andrew Ryan Furniture, a high end, bespoke kitchen and joinery specialist in Ireland installed the new HOMAG BMG 611 when looking to update its production facilities and capabilities. Saving time and money, the 5-axis BMG 611 allowed it to easily create bespoke, complex carvings without any restrictions on woodworking capabilities. Simon Brooks concludes, “HOMAG’s CNC processing centres are essential powerhouses which consistently produce high quality results. If you would like to see a demonstration of any of the HOMAG Group CNC processing centres, call Adele Hunt at our HOMAG UK offices on 01332 856424.”

INSTALLATION SCM Accord Nesting at Alderwood In 2016, Alderwood Joinery relocated production to larger 550m2 workshop premises, situated just 5 miles northwest of Newcastle city centre – a move that was precipitated by the need for additional space following the company’s decision to invest in a new CNC machining centre from SCM Group UK. Alderwood Joinery began trading in early 2014, initially specialising in bespoke joinery for the construction industry, including custom-designed staircases, doors, and other architectural joinery. During the intervening years, however, the company has broadened its customer base, and established a reputation for supplying quality joinery for the shopfitting sector, including work for a major high street coffee brand, as well as manufacturing bespoke reception desks for customerfacing office environments, and for production of furniture used in care and residential homes. However, as business owner Wendy Cronin explains: “Much of the work being undertaken for this newer clientele often necessitates the production of multiples of the same components and, in order to service this market effectively, it soon became apparent that some investment in automated machinery was required to increase production speed and repeatability.” A key factor in the decision to

proceed with investment in a CNC production unit was the timely appointment of workshop manager Mark Clennan. Having previously worked with CNC machinery, Mark was ideally placed to advise on the production capabilities of a CNC machine, and to put together an

outline brief for the machining facilities Alderwood now needed. Having had experience of working with SCM machines in the past, Mark was aware of the wide range of CNC models and options available from SCM Group, and had discussions with SCM’s area sales manager, Lee Gibson, to assess the company’s requirements. After meeting with Alderwood, Lee had no hesitation in recommending the SCM Accord 25 FX-M CNC machining centre, with specifications tailored to handle the variety of work Alderwood Joinery was now regularly undertaking. “We did have discussions with other CNC manufacturers,” says Mark Clennan, “but the proposal from SCM Group ticked all the boxes for us, and the machine has continued to meet our expectations in the months since it was commissioned.” The Accord 25 FX-M CNC installed at Alderwood is a 5-axis machine, and is equipped with the high-performance SCM multi-function extruded aluminium worktable. It is capable of highly flexible production and provides exceptional precision and finish quality regardless of component shape and dimensions. The aluminium worktable is fixed directly to the

machine’s steel base; ensuring maximum stability and rigidity, and preventing vibration during machining. Holes in the worktable, spaced 120mm apart, provide suction from the integrated vacuum circuit, and the provision of two independent vacuum pumps allows the use of two discreet working areas when required. A matrix of T-shaped grooves, at 40mm spacing, allows optimum positioning of rubber seals and locking of support fixtures, such as suction cups or jigs. To meet Alderwood’s production requirements, Lee proposed a worktable with ‘X-Y’ machining area of 3650 x

2120mm – this represents the shortest and widest machining area available with the Accord 25 FX-M, which can be specified with a maximum worktable length up to 6170mm, and a minimum width of just 1320mm. In the ‘Z’ axis, this model allows passage of components up to 250mm in height. The Prisma KS machining head is equipped with a 12kW high-speed electrospindle, capable of rotation speeds from 600 to 24,000rpm, and features a quick release tool holder. To guarantee maximum strength and torque during routing, the head is fixed directly to the

mobile gantry; facilitating high levels of stock removal, when necessary, and achieving the highest quality finish. During machining operations, the gantry travels the length of the bed at a top speed of 60m/min, and operator safety at Alderwood is ensured by the installation of horizontal photocells, fitted around the machine perimeter, which cut machine speed to 25m/min if the operator steps within a metre of the machine. In addition to the standard mobile console control unit, the machine specification for Alderwood also included a ‘TecPad’ – a handheld 7” touch screen remote control unit which provides truly mobile control of electrospindle rotation speed and speed of axes adjustment, and allows the operator to constantly monitor progress throughout machining operations. Lee Gibson commented: “During initial discussions with Mark Clennan, it was clear that Alderwood needed to carry out nesting

operations as well as machining individual workpieces, and switching between the different tasks needed to be fast and efficient.” Installation of the SCM Accord has also provided Alderwood with another diversification opportunity – as well as machining wood and timber, the company now machines Corian®, and is manufacturing reception area desking and storage systems destined for customers such as Nuffield Hospitals. In conclusion, Lee added: “The SCM Accord 25 FX-M provides Mark with all the flexibility he needs to meet the challenging demands of Alderwood’s diverse production schedule.”

CASE STUDY Increased Piece Part Activity With Cabinet Vision Boosts Fitzgerald Kitchens’ Margins “Without Cabinet Vision we might as well be using a hatchet.” Those are the words of Fitzgerald Kitchens Managing Director Eamonn Fitzgerald, who invested in the specialist woodwork CAD/CAM software in 2015, and says it was only when he started using it that he realised how indispensable it really is. Initially installing Cabinet Vision Solid Essential, the company – based in County Wicklow, in the Irish Republic – quickly upgraded to Solid Ultimate, along with the Screen-To-Machine Ultimate module for sending accurate NC code to their two Homag Weeke nesting machine tools; a DHP 210 with 9 x 7 bed, and BHP 200 with 9 x 5 bed. He says Cabinet Vision has been instrumental in expanding their trade operation, particularly repeat business from housing developers. For example, a recent

four week 500,000-Euro job for a developer in Limerick, saw ¤145,000 worth of furniture leaving the factory each week, with only two fully-qualified cabinet makers and eight semi-skilled workers involved with the manufacture. “A couple of years ago we were barely turning over 500,000-Euro a year. Now, in the first six months of 2016, the businessto-business side of the company turned over almost 2m-Euro.” He says the fact that Cabinet Vision does what skilled workers used to, is not simply a question of them setting out to save money. “Skilled people just aren’t out there anymore. A lot of them went abroad during the difficult economic times of a few years ago, and haven’t returned to Ireland.” The company incorporated a number of the different construction methods they use, into a drop-down menu in Cabinet

Vision. These include Briarconnect, face frame, groove back, inframe, onefix, robes, standard, and standard dowel. And for manufacturing four different styles of kitchen – Painted, In-Frames, Contemporary and Shaker – they use four different production processes with different hardware. “We just scroll down to whichever dialog we want and open it to edit the cabinet. Because of Cabinet Vision’s parametric capabilities, everything changes in proportion, ensuring we get a perfect assembly that will fit together on site, and it means we can change things like going from a cheaper hinge to a dearer hinge, immediately, at the click of a button.” Producing something ‘off-standard’ was difficult in their pre-Cabinet Vision days. “If we were using the beam saw to make a number of kitchens with units of 720 mm

Eamonn Fitzgerald states “There is no doubt that Cabinet Vision has transformed the company in the short time we have been using it

high by 300 deep, they would then go on to point-to-point for standard drilling for shelf holes and locations for the hinges...after which, the fabricator assembled the units. If someone wanted units of a different size it was very time consuming. “But using Cabinet Vision, if a unit needs to be a metre high, instead of 720 or 900 mm we can do it by simply editing an existing cabinet in our library.” Working mainly with 2.8 x 2.1 metre boards of MDF and chipboard a typical nest comprises between 15 and 20 panels. “It’s absolutely vital that every component is cut to an accurate, perfect shape with all holes in the right place.” Which was something the beam saw could not always produce, as he says the components would often move off-square. “We had to create a program on the pointto-point so it would go round the parts and square them.” He says there is no doubt that Cabinet Vision has transformed the company in the short time they have been using it. “The

nesters run on the early shift from 6 a.m., driving both machines, and do the same for the late shift from 12 noon to 8 pm. All programs are generated in Cabinet Vision, cutting everything we make, ensuring we can ship around 40 completed kitchens and 250 bedrooms each month.” Eamonn Fitzgerald, who runs the company with his brother, Des, designs his initial cabinet drawings, then transfers them into Cabinet Vision for editing and manipulation to ensure that the NC code enables the machines to cut exactly what the customer requires. “This is vital for cases where the back of a unit has to be cut to fit around a pillar, or to create a wine rack in the unit. Also, a lot of developers need oven and microwave configurations, which need to be customised. That’s all done in Cabinet Vision, and is cut in the workshop instead of the fitter having to cut it to fit, when it gets on site.” And he says whenever a design is completed it is stored in Cabinet Vision for use as a possible starting point

when a customer wants something similar. Overall, the combination of Cabinet Vision’s ability to quickly produce accurate components and then nest them, with the Screen-To-Machine module generating NC code for perfect cutting, means that in addition to their standard turnaround time of six to eight weeks, they can always meet some housing developers’ demands for getting the units to site within a fortnight. “Cabinet Vision has been vital in increasing our piece part activity, which is the only way to increase margins, as the jobs we’re getting are being cut to the bone all the time. To get a profitable margin we have to make our furniture faster, cheaper and better, while ensuring high quality.”

SOFTWARE

Alphacam 2017 R1 Enhances Simulation and Automation The latest edition of Alphacam, from Vero Software – the world’s number one CAM developer – is rich with new features ranging across the modules, making it easier to use and improve productivity. Amongst the new and enhanced functionality: • User interface improvements • New 3D Machining command • Updates to Machining cycles • Sawing enhancements • Simulation updates • Automation Manager improvements • New CAD files and versions The overall user experience has been augmented in a number of ways, including restyled dialogs to provide a more intuitive layout, with images and tooltips included to help the user. An example is the new 3D Machining dialog which provides the interface to multiple machining strategies in a consistent

32 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017

manner. Strategies available in the 3D Machining command are: Along Intersection; Constant Cusp; Cylindrical Parallel; Cylindrical Profiling; Drive Curves; and Z Contour Roughing. The Work Plane Properties option in the Project Manager displays a window with a grid containing details of the work planes in the active drawing, such as the name and offset number, which can also be edited in the grid. Additionally, it is now possible to rename the move clamp/fixture operation in the Quick Edit window. A new option in Drawing Notes means the Add-ins dialog will only be displayed if the opened drawing file already contains notes. In Machining, the Cylindrical Parallel strategy now gives the option of setting the width of cut as a distance, and when editing settings, the Drawing Area will

update with a preview of the tool and holder, if applicable. The machining area is indicated by a transparent shaded region around the part that is automatically updated when settings are changed in the dialog, allowing the user to visualise the effect that a change has on the operation. Alphacam Router now includes improved foul avoidance for sawing. Previously when using a saw to cut parts, the risk of fouling other parts was increased due to the size of the blade. Alphacam 2017 R1 sawing operations now checks for fouling against all geometries selected for the same operation, resulting in toolpaths being trimmed, if necessary. This means that parts can be laid out on a sheet and all sawn as the same operation, using the automatic fouling check. The operator can use the new path extensions tool with options for extending saw paths

by either, Distance, to Boundary or Pick Point, with reversing options. For Simulator, the new release sees XY configurations supported on both the head and table. The transfer of 5-axis toolpaths between Alphacam and the simulator has been optimised, meaning that complex operations containing toolpaths comprising thousands of individual elements are much faster. Furthermore, if program stops are included in the operation, they will now be recognised. All these improvements make the user experience more realistic and speed up the simulation process. Automation Manager sees several new options that provide flexibility and performance improvements, these include: • Feature Extraction - From Faces: An option that enables the user to extract the solid body outline of the part. • For non-nested job files the ‘From Job’ option is now available in the Machining Order drop-down menu in the Processing Tab. This is now set as the default selection for non-nested job

files. • Alphacam 2017 R1 gives the ability to copy and paste styles in the layer mapping setup tree by right-clicking and selecting Copy or Paste on the menu. Settings are retained when copying, which enhances efficiency by removing the need to re-apply settings each time a style is applied to a layer. It is also possible to copy and paste a complete setup, if required. General Enhancements Work Volume support has been added for the Parametric Sketcher – useful with many post processors that require the work volume dimensions for the NC controller. User configurable Default Layer Setting – useful when creating designs with set layer configurations. Improved Solid Model Assembly Splitting Support for SolidWorks and Solid Edge assemblies. The Area Estimate routine has been improved to take account of drilled holes. Alphacam’s Network License Profiles allow users to save their own selection of system and module licenses as a single

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

profile, making it quick and easy to select pre-defined license options. For example, all network licensing users can create their own set of License Profiles and copy them to a shared folder on a nominated network PC, ensuring that all users can access the same ones. A particular profile can be specified when Profiles are being configured, or an option can be checked to select one from the list displayed when the licensed application is run.

SOFTWARE Alphacam: Felder’s “Preferred CAD/CAM Solution” For Complex Programming Woodworking machinery specialists Felder UK are partnering with Alphacam software and cutting tool specialists to give customers a preferred one-stop solution for all CNC machining needs. Chief Executive Matthew Applegarth says their Format 4 branded CNC machines are supplied with proprietary Woodflash software which is an ideal introduction to CNC machining, for creating simple programs and basic cabinet panels. “But as we’ve expanded our CNC range, we’ve seen the need for more advanced software to provide our customers’ complex programming and nesting solutions. And this is done through Alphacam. We consider ourselves to be an industry leader for CNC machining centres, and as Alphacam is part of the world’s number one CAM vendor, Vero Software, we know it’s a proven CAD/CAM solution used extensively in the UK woodworking market, so the partnership works very well.” Felder also collaborates with cutting tool suppliers Leitz UK and Cruing. “As Leitz tools are of the highest quality they’re ideal for our machines. And Cruing’s Aerotech tool is perfect for nesting, providing a good solution for panel production. Overall, this three-way combination of machine tool,

Alphacam is the preferred CAD/CAM solution for Felder UK

cutting tool and software, gives our customers the best overall package from just one supplier.” Operating out of recently refurbished 20,000 square foot premises in Milton Keynes, Felder UK provides a wide range of machinery in addition to CNC, including bandsaws, panel saws, spindle moulders, edgebanders, planer-thicknessers and material handling solutions. Their customer base is predominantly involved in furniture and panel production – fitted furniture and kitchen suppliers, through to cabinet makers for intricate and fine furniture, and general joinery companies making staircases, doors and windows. The CNC range starts with the small H08 1325 8x4 flatbed router for 3-axis machining, going up to the H10 heavy industrial machines with automatic loading, offloading and through-feed production, along with 3, 4 and 5-axis pod and rail machining centres. And they offer Alphacam as the preferred CAD/CAM solution across all levels. Matthew Applegarth says they have had “a great deal of success” with providing each of the three Alphacam modules – Essential, Advanced and Ultimate – as part of a complete package which also includes

tooling, giving the customer a one-stopshop solution. “It means furniture companies can really hit the ground running when investing in a CNC machine from us, rather than having to go to the CAD/CAM and tooling vendors separately.” CNC Product Manager Richard Hird says customers who are new to Alphacam undertake training on both the software and the machine, and quickly learn the simple technique for importing different file types and getting them ready for machining. “Then, on a day-to-day basis, many of our customers will have a concept or idea from their own customers as what they need to design, create and manufacture for them. Once the file is imported into Alphacam they simply put the toolpaths on, along with all the information needed for machining, and it then goes straight through as a TCN file all ready to run on the Format 4.”

HANDLING

Combilift Is A Good Machine For Scott+Sargeant Combilift multidirectional forklifts are a popular choice in the timber sector for enabling the safe and space saving handling and storage of long and bulky loads such as packs of timber, roof trusses, sheet materials, mouldings and so on. At Scott+Sargeant’s base in Horsham a C4000 Combilift is prized for its ability to offer very stable handling of machinery which comes in all shapes and dimensions, often with an offset centre of gravity. Woodworking machinery and spare parts experts Scott+Sargeant’s stock comprises new and used machines, tooling, spares and parts and hand tools and the company is also an official dealership for the German made Martin range of machinery. The LPG powered 4t capacity Combilift that it acquired from Andover Forktruck Services earlier this year solved a number of issues in one: the need for better and rationalised storage in one part of the premises and the requirement for secure

handling of irregular sized machines such as dust extractors, power saws and edgebanders. “Space is understandably costly in his part of the country,” said Director Paul Charnaud, “and we saw an opportunity to

make much better use of a previously underutilised area if we could find the right combination of handling & storage. We had seen a Combilift working in a plastics factory across the road and due to the nature of the products we handle we realised that this would work for us.” By installing racking that was configured according to the dimensions and working aisle-widths of the Combilift, 4000 ft has been freed up where incoming new machinery is now stored prior to despatch. The truck’s ability to work in tight confines avoided the need for large areas to be set aside for manoevering, allowing maximum use of space. Paul Charnaud also adds that the racking has enabled much more organised – and therefore quicker - stock location as it was often necessary to remove a number of items before accessing the one in question. Protecting stock from damage was a further consideration and even the most irregular loads can be securely moved around: resting them on the Combilift’s platform offers a much more stable base than balancing on forks. Paul Charnaud sums up: “Compared to our counterbalance forklift which had very limited mobility the Combilift has been very beneficial. Investment costs will be quickly recouped as we have reclaimed the idle space which was badly needed due to our ongoing growth.” For further information: www.combilift.com www.scosarg.com

INSTALLATION

A Brilliant Sander From Kündig Murray & Murray Ltd is recognised as one of the leading Scottish designers and manufacturers of high quality handmade bespoke kitchens and interiors with a reputation for excellent workmanship and customer service. The design portfolio is diverse covering all styles from period country houses to contemporary city apartments and everything in between. To enhance this reputation, the company completed the purchase of a Kündig Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L sander at W16. “The new sander was needed to improve the quality of the finish of our product and to speed up production,” workshop manager, Adam Cleghorn said. “We already had a wide-belt sander, but it was about 15 years old and we greatly needed to improve the quality of finish that we were achieving. “I chose a Kündig sander because everybody told me that they were the best,” Adam continued. “I will be 40 next year and have been doing this since I was 15: and when I spoke to the reps and engineers, they all said that Kündig was the best. I had also seen the advert in trade magazines over the years, and the company always seemed to be getting good write-ups. “We did get another company in to quote, but they could not understand what we wanted to achieve. In a 15 minute conversation with Carl O'Meara of Kündig

Ltd he got exactly what we wanted: he understood completely what we needed to do.” Adam said that the machine had basically been sold on the phone, but the company did want to see the machine in action before making a final decision. Murray & Murray Ltd were purchasing the machine that was on display at W16 and paid a deposit before the show, on the understanding that if demonstrations at the show did not meet with their approval they would not buy it. “Carl provided veneered boards for us at the show which we sanded: the boards were similar to those which we use, so we could see the quality of the sander without having to carry boards around ourselves. He put one board through the sander and it was sold! You could see the quality straight away from that one compared to what we were achieving in the workshop.” Adam emphasised that the quality that is achieved by the sander is “way beyond expectations.” He continued, “We were running proper jobs straight away, we had so much confidence in it. The first week we put over 1,000 metres of material through the sander. Both Carl and the engineer who installed it said it would be wise to try a couple of test panels first, but we saw the quality when the engineer installed it and felt test pieces were unnecessary even with lacquers and veneers. I was sanding lacquered panels today: you can sand off a layer of lacquer, it is that accurate, without going into the wood.” The Kündig sander is used across the full range of Murray & Murray products. Adam has seen significant time savings since installing the Kündig sander. “Work that took the boys four to five days to sand by hand, can be done on the machine in four hours, saving us 5,500 hours a year.” And the reduction in hand sanding to just the edges of panels has improved health and safety, reports Adam, as the “boys on the benches” are not exposed to so much dust. “We are getting the sandpaper for the machine off Carl as well: the quality of the sandpaper he supplies is exceptional and is

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

lasting way beyond what was being achieved on the previous machine.” Adam selected a machine with oblique sanding, and has it permanently set up with the oblique sanding option as “it totally gets rid of the marks”. Where all sanding heads are in line with the direction of travel of the workpiece, tiny flaws that develop over time on the abrasive belts can be transferred to the workpiece. In oblique sanding one head, often the last one, is set at a slight angle to the direction of travel: marks are not transferred to the workpiece, a definite asset when expensive materials are being processed. When asked if he would recommend Kündig, Adam replied: “Certainly, without a doubt. I wouldn't even hesitate. My only regret is that I did not buy one of these years ago: I cannot believe how good this machine is.”

INSTALLATION Reface Scotland Gain An Edge On The Competition With New BRANDT Highflex 1230 From HOMAG UK Reface Scotland has more than 25 years of skills and experience in bedroom and kitchen transformations. Initially the company specialised in making quality custom-made kitchen cabinets. When fitting kitchens it became apparent that fitters were constantly forced to throw away perfectly serviceable existing units, most of them high quality items with many years of life left in them. This is when the idea of recycling these units was thought of and the ‘refacing’ focus was established for the business. Since then, the world has become more eco-conscious and, as a company, Reface evaluates the waste produced at its manufacturing plant to insure it is, if at all possible, recycled. Today, Reface Scotland has grown to become the market leader in kitchen refacing. The company manufactures in its own facility, allowing it to keep a close eye on quality as well as offer unrivalled flexibility. Reface’s carcasses are handmade and engineered to the highest quality with a thickness of 18mm rather than the common 15mm. “Our old edgebander was costing us time and money,” explains Malcolm Graham, production manager for Reface Scotland. He continues, “We used it for eight hours a day and it kept breaking down. It wasn’t delivering the standard of results the

business needed and we felt that given the cost of repairs and downtime, a new machine would be more cost effective and quickly pay for itself. “Many members of staff at Reface have been in the industry for over 40 years and during that time German engineering has always been second to none in terms of quality and excellence. So when it came to drawing up a shortlist of companies to talk to about a replacement, HOMAG was top of our list. “In terms of what we needed the new edgebander to do, corner rounding was essential. We also wanted a machine that we could set up quickly and do fast edge changeovers to improve productivity.” BRANDT Highflex 1230 – Impressive speed with excellent quality and reliability “Although we looked at other brands, nothing came close to the all-round superiority of the BRANDT Highflex 1230 which we saw demonstrated at AWMS Engineering, the official agents for the Homag Group in Scotland. “Once we’d ordered the machine, everything went very smoothly. The delivery was spot on time and the machine was installed in less than a day. The installation engineer, Andrew Carson, also trained our team on the BRANDT, doing an excellent job here in our factory. “Since the Highflex 1230 has been

commissioned, I can’t speak too highly about its performance. The machine is absolutely reliable and does everything we had hoped it would. As a consequence of installing the edgebander, there has been a significant improvement in both quality and productivity. With the Highflex we can easily produce all our flat doors in-house, including high gloss finish styles.” Quick payback “The BRANDT Highflex 1230 is the first machine the company has bought from HOMAG, but I’m sure it won’t be the last. We’ve had the edgebander for just over six months now and it has been totally reliable and truly cost effective. “Unlike its predecessor, we can run the BRANDT for seven or eight hours a day, with absolutely no issues or concerns. Given this level of productivity, our expectation is that the Highflex 1230 will have easily paid for itself within two years,” concludes Malcolm Graham. If you would like more information or a demonstration of any of the BRANDT range of edgebanders, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

WOODWASTE Wood Waste Technology Heater Installed In New State-Of-The-Art Joinery Premises Wood Waste Technology has recently installed a new wood waste heater into a high quality joinery company in West Molesey, London that manufactures and installs bespoke windows and doors. Directors, Ben Stanbrook and Simon Nicholson started a business partnership many years ago, providing bespoke joinery and carpentry services together after they met whilst studying joinery at school. Working originally from a small workshop on a farm in Surrey, the business continued to grow and became a limited company called Stanbrook & Nicholson in 2006. Celebrating its 10th year of trading this year, the business recently relocated to a larger purpose-built, state-of-the-art factory, in order to upscale operations and meet increased demand. The directors knew they wanted to install a wood waste heater into the new factory, enhancing the company’s environmental policy by using waste wood and sawdust to heat the building, whilst also helping to reduce the company’s operating expenses. Director of Stanbrook and Nicholson, Ben Stanbrook says: “We were recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology by one of our suppliers, as the company has an excellent reputation for providing durable, reliable and

DUST EXTRACTION DCS Cyclone Clone For Arbor Forest Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has recently completed installation and commissioning of a second dust extraction system for Arbor Forest Products’ MDF mouldings facility at the company’s New Holland headquarters in North Lincolnshire. DCS installed the extraction plant for Arbor Forest Products’ first MDF mouldings unit, which started production in early 2014, and the addition of this new £2.8m mill will double production capacity – furthering the company’s aim of become a leading supplier of MDF mouldings to the UK market. The state-of-the-art, high throughput manufacturing plant inevitably produces high levels of MDF waste and the success of the previous extraction installation was a key factor in the decision to award the contract for a second system to DCS Ltd. At the heart of the new system is a ‘clean side’ inverter driven 75kW main fan which extracts to a DCS cyclonic filter with the capacity to clean up to 45,000m3 of air per hour. Standing 10 metres high and around 4 metres in diameter, its robust welded steel construction and six ATEX-certified explosion relief panels ensure the DCS cyclonic filter can safely handle potentially explosive dusts. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at Dust Control Systems, explains: “Cyclonic filtration is highly-suited to continuous operation processes where large volumes of heavily dust-laden air are produced. The model installed at Arbor Forest is capable of collecting up to 1000kg of dust per hour,

75kW main fan extracts to a 45,000m3 capacity DCS Cyclonic filter, delivering MDF waste to a 50m3 silo or directly to a sealed bulk collection trailer.

The DCS installation provides a virtually dust-free environment at Arbor Forest Products’ MDF mouldings facility.

with the initial cyclonic separation removing over 95% of the waste, which drops into the conical hopper.” The remaining dust is filtered from the circulating air by a patented array of tubular filter bags. The efficiency of the polyester anti-static needle felt bags is maintained by a powerful reverse jet cleaning system, with automatic online management of cleaning cycles. This 2-stage collection process enables very high filtration efficiency and the cleaned air, which can be either diverted back into the factory or discharged to atmosphere, contains a maximum of 0.1mg of dust per cubic metre. All waste collected at the bottom of the hopper section is discharged pressure-free, via a rotary valve, from where a closed-loop transfer system feeds the waste directly to a bulk collection trailer or, when required, waste is manually diverted to an adjacent 50m3 capacity storage silo. Mirroring the previous installation, the silo is 4 metres in diameter, with a conical base, and features twin rotary valves; the main valve feeding a closed-loop transfer system directing waste to the collection trailer, and the second discharging to an emergency screw conveyor. Commenting further on the installation, Melvyn Bathgate added: “DCS will never

compromise on safety and always incorporate a CARZ back-pressure flap valve before the filter inlet. CARZ valves are ATEX-approved and, in the event of an explosion, are designed to prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames from travelling back along the ductwork in which it is mounted and into the factory.” Arbor Forest Products’ MDF Manager, Gwyn Tuxford, who has been with the company for 20 years, commented: "The extraction system that DCS installed for MDF Mill 1 has been trouble-free since the day it was commissioned and provides us with a virtually dust-free environment – we’re now looking forward to the same working conditions in the new mill.” In conclusion, Mr. Tuxford added: “Melvyn and the team at DCS deliver a first class service – from specification through to commissioning – installation of the extraction system for MDF Mill 2, including the complete ducting system, was completed in just 10 days.”
