In 2002 I spent six months playing cricket in South Africa. Those 26 weeks remain the most amazing experience of my life so far! I got to play my favourite sport in a fantastic country where I enjoyed great weather, beautiful beaches and an extremely warm welcome. When I wasn’t playing and training, I travelled all over the country and at the end of the season I did an overland tour. During my six-month adventure, I not only improved my cricket beyond belief but I also trekked, lounged on stunning palm-fringed beaches and saw a side of the world that changed my life forever. When I returned from South Africa, I was inspired by my recent adventure, so I set up Sport Lived to help other people have the same kind of amazing, life changing experience. I honestly believe that travelling overseas to play and coach sport is one the best things you’ll ever do.
We offer sporting programmes in five fabulous countries – Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and South Africa. In each country, we’ve handpicked the best sports clubs, coaching placements and accommodation providers. I know they’re the best, because in most cases I’ve been out there and chosen them myself! By signing up for the full season you will get the most complete experience possible of playing and training overseas. You’ll train, play and socialise all season long – from your first match all the way through to the Grand Final!
How it works
You will attend training sessions with your club during the week and take part in competitive fixtures at the weekends, so you’ll get a chance to put all that training and expert coaching into practice. It’ll be an amazing experience, and you may be lucky enough to head out on tour with your club or play in a Grand Final!

Our academies give you access to elite coaching and world class training facilities. You’ll play and train with a local club, so you’ll be able to put all that training and expert coaching into practice. The academies are the most intense programmes offered because you’ll be playing and training virtually every day of the week.

Coaching programmes Share your knowledge So, you’re passionate about sport and want to share your knowledge and experience with youngsters whilst travelling overseas? Get involved with a Sport Lived coaching programme and you’ll do just that. You’ll also develop as a coach, enhance your CV and help the next generation learn new skills.
Paid coaching in Australia From 9 to 26 weeks
You’ll be paid up to £10-£12 an hour to coach youngsters in some of Brisbane and Melbourne’s top schools. On average you can expect 5 to 10 hours of paid work a week. (The exact hours and pay will be confirmed after you book). It is also possible to supplement this with additional umpiring and refereeing work. While coaching a whole class of mini Aussies can be a little challenging, working with youngsters over the course of a school term is highly rewarding. The leadership and communication skills you will develop will also look great on your CV.

Volunteer coaching From 4 to 12 weeks
We run rewarding voluntary coaching placements in Argentina, South Africa and Sri Lanka. For our Argentine coaching programmes, you will work with young players at local schools and sports clubs in one of Latin America’s top sporting nations, and have the option to take Spanish lessons to help you understand and explain things in the local language! In South Africa and Sri Lanka, you’ll have the chance to pass on your knowledge, experience and passion to underprivileged children from local townships and disadvantaged areas. You’ll lead regular training sessions, organise competitive matches and inspire youngsters by building their confidence and improving their sports and life skills.
A real challenge
The structure of our programmes allow you to bond with your team and make a difference to their development. As well as being highly rewarding, our coaching placements are a fantastic addition to your CV because you’ll develop excellent organisational, leadership and communication skills. If you can coach a team of disadvantaged youngsters in Argentina, South Africa and Sri Lanka, you’ll be ready for anything!

As with all Sport Lived programmes, you’ll live in centrally located accommodation with other Sport Lived coaches and players. Your coaching placement will be easily accessible by public transport and a local mentor will be on hand throughout your programme. We can also organise for you to join a local sports club if you would like to play as well as coach during your time overseas.

The South Island’s second largest city has a compact centre and laidback atmosphere. It’s packed with beautiful Victorian buildings, the oldest university in the country and you’ll find plenty of pubs, clubs and restaurants in which to unwind. Dunedin is a gateway to all the attractions this part of the world is famous for, including long sandy beaches, ski resorts and world-class vineyards. The city has a great sporting heritage, with the Otago Highlanders being one of the most successful rugby union teams in the country. Otago’s hockey and cricket teams also excel in their respective leagues.
Top things to do in Dunedin Watch The Otago Highlanders
No trip to New Zealand would be complete without watching a rugby match. There are few better venues than the Forsyth Barr Stadium, home to the Highlanders, whose world-class squad features some of the biggest names in the game. If you’re lucky enough to be in the city for the big game between the Highlanders and the Canterbury Crusaders, you’ll be in for a real treat!
Do a jump in Queenstown
Queenstown is New Zealand’s unofficial capital of extreme sports. There are three bungee sites to choose from, but if you want our advice, take the 120-foot leap off the Kawarau Bridge. If you get your head wet in the river, tell them to shorten the cable the next time round!
Hanmer Springs
The laid back town of Hanmer Springs sits up in the mountains and is home to a vast - and very relaxing - hot springs complex. It’s a great way to relax after training and matches. If you’re there during the winter, you can do some skiing too!

EXPERIENCE THE LATIN SPIRIT Argentina is home to El Diego, the mighty Bombanera Stadium and some of the finest sporting facilities and coaches in Latin America. It’s also one of the most exciting and diverse countries on the continent: stretching from the mystical frozen landscapes of Tierra del Fuego in the south, to the mighty rivers and lush green jungles of the north. The Mini Season programme provides you with a unique opportunity to play cricket in Sri Lanka and experience life in an idyllic island paradise. You will join a welcoming cricket club in Colombo where you’ll take part in regular training sessions, play in competitive matches and get involved with all the club’s social events. Your accommodation is close to the beach and is shared with other Sport Lived participants, providing you with a ready-made group of friends as soon as you arrive. The length of the Mini Season programme also means that you have time before and after the programme to travel around Sri Lanka.
Our Sri Lankan cricket coaching programmes last from 4 to 12 weeks and involve teaching either underprivileged children from the local community or pupils in the top sporting schools in Colombo. You’ll run drills, improve their technique and organise competitive matches. On average, you’ll coach 10-20 hours a week and work with children aged 6-18. The youngsters you’ll be coaching will be keen to emulate their cricketing heroes, radiating a tangible and irrepressible enthusiasm for the sport. It is a great opportunity to coach passionate youngsters and enhance your coaching and leadership skills whilst spending time in one of Asia’s most beautiful countries.

Along the way there have been some great stories, some funny moments and some really amazing sporting achievements. Here are a few we thought might inspire you…
Out for a duck in the Grand Final!
Rick Moore played cricket in Melbourne and his team reached the Grand Final. He was playing in the same side as the local Sport Lived mentor’s brother, Bradley. Rick came to the crease, Bradley hit one to mid-off, chose to go for a quick single and Rick got run out for a duck without facing a single ball! Luckily, Rick was something of an all-rounder, so when his chance came to bowl he took a couple of wickets and helped his team to win the Grand Final.
A glorious return to Melbourne
Vicky Hewett travelled to Melbourne with Sport Lived to play hockey. Everything was going well - Vicky had secured her place as the team’s first choice goalie and the team looked like they had a pretty good chance of winning the league. Unfortunately, she had to fly home for a family emergency and couldn’t afford to fly back. Her Aussie teammates

were devastated, so they all chipped in and booked her a return flight to Melbourne! She flew back, reclaimed her place in goal and the team went on to win the league with Vicky making some vital saves in the Grand Final.

We do everything we can to ensure that everyone who travels with us gets top quality coaching. Nonetheless it was still a bit of a surprise when former Australian cricket coach John Buchanan turned up at the University of Queensland and decided to put our academy players through their paces! Buchanan is involved with the University of Queensland where we hold our academies and when he heard there were a group of ‘pommie’ cricketers training on the campus, he just couldn’t resist checking out the competition!
Train in Melbourne, row in the Olympics!
George Nash travelled to Melbourne to get some expert coaching and row for a local club. It seems like all that training and all those hours on the water really paid off because George returned home to row for the victorious Cambridge team in the 2010 Varsity Boat Race and then competed in the London 2012 Olympics, where he won bronze in the coxless pairs!
