ENVIRONMENTAL/LANDSCAPE EXPERIENCE

North Wales Wildlife Trust - Conservation Assistant 04/2011 - 05/2011 Month long full time work placement as part of postgraduate studies. Practical work included wide range of conservation tasks and supporting volunteers. Office based work included desktop research, producing publicity material and administration. Carbon Descent – Education & Advice Volunteer 09/2008 – 03/2009 6 month part time placement with Carbon Descent, an independent social enterprise and environmental trust which aims to create strategies and deliver solutions that measurably reduce carbon footprints. Desktop research, assisted with energy surveys, produced publicity material, helped at public events e.g. Bike Doctor. British Trust for Conservation Volunteers 2006 – 2008 Volunteered on a regular basis for various conservation/habitat management projects e.g. scrub clearance, coppicing, path construction and tree planting. Gained a range of practical conservation skills. Acted as Volunteer Officer with responsibility for planning tasks, route planning, liaison with site manager, health and safety of volunteers. Certificate in Landscape Design Greenwich University (part completed) 09/2005 – 07/2007 Gained design skills and understanding of landscape design process. Art Director: ‘Art of Living’ magazine, SGI-UK 06/2003 – 09/2009 Responsible for design and production of flagship publication for SGI-UK, a worldwide Buddhist organisation. Managed a team of designers, volunteer contributors, photographers and illustrators. Led a successful magazine re-launch in 2007. Integral member of the wider editorial team, assisting in creative planning, and member of the Editorial Board. Senior Designer: Gullane Children’s Books, London 07/2000 – 06/2003 Specialised in children’s book design across all age ranges and formats including educational, fiction, and non-fiction. Responsible for project managing several lead titles and working closely with award winning authors and illustrators. Also produced marketing and publicity material, annual catalogues and international book fair stands. Art Director: ‘MOUTH’ magazine, London 01/2001 – 09/2001 Designed brand new lifestyle magazine. Responsibilities included layout design, house styles, photographic commissioning, page planning, schedule planning, print production liaison. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT I have been a member of Soka Gakkai International (SGI-UK) since 1998, an world-wide Buddhist organisation. Nichiren Buddhism encourages the development of the individual’s greatest potential and the establishment of world peace. I have played an active role locally as a volunteer to organise and lead training courses, public talks, youth groups, conferences, accounts, and as a manager at visitor centres. Nationally, I was employed as Art Director for SGI-UK’s monthly magazine. I have gained many valuable practical and interpersonal skills including moderating meetings, group facilitation, public speaking and presentation, and one-to-one mentoring. I have a deep commitment to engaging with individuals and local communities to encourage self improvement and community development.
