Eén ding valt daarin direct op: 2013 was een uitstekend jaar voor Amsterdam als internationale congresdestinatie.

In de stad zijn meer internationale zakelijke bijeenkomsten georganiseerd dan in 2012. Er is een forse stijging waargenomen van 16 procent meer meetings dan het voorgaande jaar. Dit succes geldt zowel voor de corporate als de non-corporate meetings.

2013 proved to be an excellent year for Amsterdam as an international convention host. More international association meetings were organised in the city than in the previous year. The number of meetings held in the city increased significantly by 16% compared to 2012.

This success relates to both corporate and non-corporate meetings.

Stijging deelnemersdagen Naast de groei in bijeenkomsten is daarnaast een forse stijging van het aantal deelnemersdagen waargenomen van maar liefst 26 procent. Deze ontwikkeling is vooral toe te schrijven aan het huisvesten van enkele grote stadsbrede congressen zoals het Congress of the European Society of Cardiology met 30.000 bezoekers, European Cancer Congress met bijna 16.000 bezoekers en het International Liver Congress met bijna 10.000 deelnemers.

Het aantal deelnemersdagen is een kwantitatieve maat eenheid die rekening houdt met twee belangrijke criteria van een bijeenkomst, de duur van een meeting in dagen en het aantal deelnemers. Deze indicator is een goede graadmeter voor de economische impact die wordt gegenereerd door het faciliteren van internationale zakelijke bijeenkomsten.

Rise in ‘participant days’ Alongside the rise in the number of conventions, recent figures also indicate a notable 26% rise in the number of ‘participant days’, a quantitative unit of measurement that measures two significant conference factors: the duration of the meeting and the number of participants.

This increase can primarily be attributed to the addition of several citywide conventions, including the Congress of the European Society of Cardiology (30,000 participants), the European Cancer Congress (nearly 16,000 participants) and the International Liver Congress (nearly 10,000 participants). The measurement provides a sound indication of the economic potential generated by facilitating international association meetings.

Innovatieve en creatieve bestemming Het Amsterdamse DNA wordt gekenmerkt door innovatie, creativiteit en handelsgeest. Deze waarden zijn ook terug te zien in de congresindustrie. De stad ontvangt veel nieuwe en voor het eerst of tweede maal georganiseerde congressen, zowel corporate als non-corporate.

De thema’s van deze evenementen variëren van ICT en medisch tot techniek en veiligheid. Bovendien ontvangt Amsterdam congressen die met grote regelmaat terugkeren naar de stad. Enkele voorbeelden hiervan zijn de International Broadcasting Conference met 55.000 bezoekers en Integrated Systems Europe met 35.000 bezoekers in 2013.

Innovative and creative destination Amsterdam’s DNA is characterised by creativity, innovation and commercial spirit: three core values that also typify the city’s meetings industry. The city hosts numerous new congresses as well as events being organised for a second time – both corporate and non-corporate. The meetings address a wide range of themes, from ICT to medicine and from technology to security. Amsterdam also welcomes conventions that return to the city time and time again; for example, the IBC (55,000 participants) and Integrated Systems Europe (35,000 participants in 2013).

anleiding voor dit rapport was de behoefte aan een globaal overzicht van de meetingsector om de concurrentiepositie van Amsterdam als vergaderstad verder te kunnen versterken.

De hiervoor zorgvuldig opgebouwde databank zal in de toekomst ieder jaar worden bijgewerkt.

Doel is het creëren van een uitgebreide en zo volledig mogelijke databank met hierin stadsbrede informatie ten behoeve van de Amsterdamse meetingsector. Op dit moment bevat de databank informatie over 4.648 meetings. In 2013 vonden 749 van deze plaats.

Data voor eerdere jaren wordt als vergelijking meegenomen.

he reason for this report was the requirement for a global overview of the meetings sector in order to strengthen Amsterdam’s position as a meeting city. In the future, the database, which has been carefully constructed for this purpose, will be improved upon each year.

The aim is the creation of an extensive and as compre­hensive as possible databank, containing city-wide information for the benefit of the Amsterdam meetings sector. The databank currently contains information on 4,648 meetings, 749 of which took place in 2013. Data from previous years is included for comparison.

What information does the AM meeting databank contain?

In de AM meetingdatabank zijn alleen internationale bijeenkomsten uit de Metropool Amsterdam opgenomen die minimaal twee dagen duren en beschikken over minimaal 40 deelnemers waarvan een derde in het buitenland woonachtig is. Tot de genoemde bijeenkomsten horen uitsluitend corporate en non-corporate meetings.

Bij evenementen die een congres en een beurs combineren, zoals de International Broadcast Conference (IBC), zijn alleen congresdeelnemers meegenomen. De beursbezoekers zijn buiten beschouwing gelaten, omdat beurzen niet tot de categorie meetings behoren. Uiteraard trekken zij wel internationale bezoekers. Om deze reden worden deze separaat in dit rapport weergegeven.

De databank bevat alle relevante data van een zakelijke bijeenkomst. Hierbij horen naast algemene gegevens zoals naam, datum en website ook specifieke data, zoals het aantal verwachte en daadwerkelijke deelnemers, de duur van de meeting in dagen, het aantal deelnemersdagen, de naam van de associatie/PCO en het vakgebied van de meeting. Alleen meetings waarover bij AM volledige informatie bekend is, zijn in de databank opgenomen. Bovendien bevat de databank belangrijke gegevens over de locatie, zoals naam, adres, type, hotelclassificatie en geocode. Uiteindelijk kunnen deze gegevens gecategoriseerd worden en met elkaar vergeleken en gecombineerd worden. Op die manier is het mogelijk om variabele informatie uit de databank te halen en hieruit de meest interessante data te selecteren voor nader onderzoek.

Wie heeft de informatie uit de AM meetingdatabank verzameld?

Voor de dataverzameling heeft AM de belangrijkste meetinglocaties (zowel vergaderlocaties als hotels met vergaderruimte), congresorganisatoren (PCO’s en DMC’s) in Amsterdam en omgeving direct benaderd. Om een zo breed mogelijk beeld te scheppen zijn er ook bedrijven benaderd die geen partner zijn van AM. De aangeleverde informatie is vervolgens door AM gecontroleerd, getoetst op correctheid en verwerkt in de database. De gecontroleerde databank is tevens vergeleken met de ICCA databank.

Welke andere bronnen zijn in dit rapport geraadpleegd?

Naast de statistieken uit de meetingdatabank van AM zijn ook de ontvangen leads van de afdeling Business Marketing en de databank van het bezoekersonderzoek Metropool Amsterdam 2011 gebruikt. Alle overige bronnen staan duidelijk aangegeven in dit rapport. Indien een externe bron wordt geraadpleegd, wordt deze vermeld.

Only international meetings in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area taking place over a minimum of two days, with at least 40 participants, of which a third are resident abroad are included in the AM databank. The aforementioned meetings include corporate and non-corporate meetings. For events combining a conference and a trade show, such as the IBC, only the conference delegates are taken into consideration.

Trade show visitors are excluded. Because trade shows do not belong in the category of meetings, yet they do attract international visitors, they are published separately in this report.

The databank contains all of the relevant data for a business meeting. In addition to general information such as name, date and website, it also contains specific data such as the number of anticipated and actual participants, the duration of the meeting in days, the number of participant days, the name of the association/PCO and the trade sector of the meeting. Only meetings about which full information is known to AM are included in the databank. Furthermore, the databank contains important information regarding the location, such as name, address, type, hotel classification and geocode. These details can ultimately be categorised and compared and combined together. This method means it is possible to retrieve variable information from the databank and to select the most interesting data for further research.

Who has collected the information from the AM meeting databank?

For the data collection itself, AM approached directly the most important meeting locations (both meeting locations and hotels with meeting facilities), congress organisers (PCOs and DMCs) in Amsterdam and the surrounding area. In order to paint as broad a picture as possible, businesses which are not partners of AM were also approached. The information supplied was subsequently checked by AM, tested for accuracy and entered into the database. The databank was also compared to the ICCA databank.

Which other sources were consulted for this report?

In addition to the statistics from the AM meeting databank, leads received from the department of Business Marketing and the databank of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area Visitor Survey 2011 were also used. All other sources are clearly stated within the report. In the event that an external source was consulted, this is also stated.

n 2013 telde Amsterdam 799.442 inwoners. In de totale Metropool Amsterdam wonen 2.349.870 inwoners. De regio maakt daarmee 14% van de totale Nederlandse bevolking uit.

n 2013 Amsterdam was home to 799,442 inhabitants. There are 2,349,870 inhabitants in the total Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.

The area constitutes 14% of the total population of the Netherlands.

Binnen de gemeente zijn personen tussen de 20 en de 39 jaar duidelijk oververtegenwoordigd t.o.v. de rest van Nederland (36% t.o.v. 25%). Personen ouder dan 45 jaar zijn in Amsterdam minder vertegenwoordigd dan het landelijke cijfer (36% t.o.v. 45%).

In 2013 telde Amsterdam 178 nationaliteiten. De helft van de Amsterdammers komt uit het buitenland en/of is van buitenlandse afkomst. Ter vergelijking: in heel Nederland is het aandeel buitenlanders 21%. Amsterdam is dus bij uitstek een multi­culturele destinatie. Vooral het aandeel niet-Westerse allochtonen in Amsterdam is met 35% meer dan drie keer zo hoog dan in heel Nederland (12%).

A msterdam heeft een hoog opgeleide beroepsbevolking. In totaal heeft 59% van de werkende bevolking een opleiding in het hoger onderwijs gevolgd. Vergeleken met heel Nederland (35%) is dit erg hoog. Het verschil zit niet alleen in het hogere onderwijsniveau, ook het aandeel van werknemers met een laag onderwijsniveau (12%) is significant lager dan in heel Nederland (22%).

Amsterdam counted 178 nationalities in 2013. Around half of Amsterdam’s inhabitants come from abroad and/or are of foreign descent. Compare this with the national average of 21%. This makes Amsterdam an ideal multicultural destination.

In particular, at 35%, the percentage of non-Western ethnic minorities in Amsterdam is more than three times higher than the Dutch national average (12%).

Amsterdam has a highly educated working population. In total, 59% of the working population has undertaken a course in higher education. Compared to the national figure for the Netherlands (35%), this is very high. The difference is not only in higher education. Even the share of employees with only a low level of education (12%) is significantly lower than across the whole of the Netherlands (22%).

msterdam maakt onderdeel uit van het kloppende hart van de Nederlandse economie, de Randstad. Het Amsterdamse bruto binnenlandse product (BBP) per hoofd is met € 57,963 bijna 60% hoger dan het landelijke BBP per hoofd van € 34.551. egin 2013 waren er in de gemeente Amsterdam 112.802 bedrijven geregistreerd.

B Dit is een stijging van 5% ten opzichte van het voorgaande jaar. In Metropool Amsterdam waren er 237.455 bedrijven gevestigd (4% meer dan in 2012) De ontwikkeling van het aantal nieuwe bedrijven in Amsterdam c.q. Metropool Amsterdam loopt evenwijdig met het Nederlandse gemiddelde (2%).

Het Amsterdamse aandeel binnen de totale Nederlandse bedrijvensector blijft stabiel. Metropool Amsterdam huisvest nog steeds 18% van alle bedrijven die in Nederland geregistreerd zijn.

Als gevolg van de economische recessie is de werkloosheid in Amsterdam opgelopen van 6% in 2009 naar 8% in 2012.

msterdam is part of the beating heart of the Dutch economy, the Randstad. At € 57,963 Amsterdam’s gross domestic product (GDP) per person is almost 60% higher than the national GDP per person of € 34,551. s of early 2013, there were 112,802 businesses registered in Amsterdam.

A This shows an increase of 5% over the previous year. The number of businesses across the entire Metropolitan Area rose to 237,455 (+4% over 2012).

Amsterdam leads the way when it comes to the development of new businesses compared to the Dutch national average (+2%). Amsterdam’s share in the total Dutch business sector remains very stable. Currently the Metropolitan Area is still home to 18% of all registered businesses in the Netherlands.

As a result of the economic recession, unemployment in Amsterdam has increased from 6% in 2009 to 8% in 2012.

msterdam Airport Schiphol is een internationaal knooppunt met directe luchtverbindingen naar 323 verschillende destinaties wereldwijd. Via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is Amsterdam vanuit de meeste Europese steden binnen 2 uur met een directe vlucht te bereiken. et ruim 52 miljoen vervoerde passagiers groeide Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in M 2013 naar een nieuw record en handhaafde zich daarmee als 4e op de ranglijst van de grootste Europese luchthavens. In vergelijking met 2012 is dat een stijging van 3%.

Van deze 10 luchthavens heeft Istanboel (+14,2%) in 2013 de grootste ontwikkeling doorgemaakt en is daarmee de grootste concurrent van Amsterdam geworden. De top drie luchthavens Londen (+3,4%), Parijs (+0,8%) en Frankfurt (+1,1%) zijn echter langzamer gegroeid. Voor het tweede jaar op rij heeft Madrid een forse daling geregistreerd (-12,1%).

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is an international hub with direct flight connections to 317 different destinations worldwide.

Via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Amsterdam is accessible within 2 hours from most European cities by direct flight.

By carrying more than 52 million passengers, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is now ranked 4th among the 10 largest European airports. This is an increase of 3% compared to 2012.

Of these 10 airports, Istanbul (+14.2%) experienced the greatest developments in the fields of passenger transport in 2013 and became Amsterdam’s main competitor.

The top three airports London (+3.4%), Paris (+0.8%) and Frankfurt (+1.1%) saw slower development. For the second year in a row, Madrid registered a vast decrease (-12.1%).

e treinstations Amsterdam Centraal en Amsterdam Airport Schiphol zijn goed aangesloten op het internationale netwerk voor hogesnelheidstreinen.

I n 2013 heeft de hogesnelheidstrein Thalys 46% meer reizigers tussen Nederland en België vervoerd. Op de lijn Amsterdam – Brussel is het aantal verbindingen uitgebreid van 9 naar 13 om aan de vraag van de reizigers te voldoen. Dit verklaart grotendeels de toename van 46,3% in reizigers op dit traject. Op het traject tussen Parijs-Amsterdam heeft Thalys een stijging gerealiseerd van 0,6%. De meeste Thalys-reizigers reizen nog steeds tussen Nederland en Parijs. De markt Nederland-België per Thalys is fors gegroeid maar blijft wel klein.

Mede debet aan de grote stijging van het aantal Thalys reizigers op het traject Amsterdam-Brussel is het uit de roulatie nemen van de Fyra. Begin december 2012 had de NS de hogesnelheidslijn Fyra tussen Amsterdam en Brussel over de HSL-zuid in gebruik genomen. In januari 2013 nam zij de Fyra, om technische redenen weer uit dienst. Deze is toen weer vervangen door de gewone Intercity, die voor de invoering van de Fyra al reed.

In het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Duitsland maakten in 2013 elke dag 1,1 miljoen passagiers gebruik van trein- en busdiensten van NS dochter Albellio.

D

oor de twee grote aanleglocaties voor cruiseschepen, de Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) en de Felison Terminal in Velsen/ IJmuiden aan Zee, is de Metropool Amsterdam uitstekend bereikbaar via het water. eze terminals ontvingen in 2013 in totaal 1.242.509 passagiers, van wie 355.687 D riviercruisepassagiers, 343.669 zeecruisepassagiers en 543.153 cruiseferrypassagiers. Voor de riviercruise betekent dit een stijging van bijna 11%. Het totaal aantal passagiers in de haven van Amsterdam is in 2013 met 3% gestegen.

De Fast Flying Ferry tussen Amsterdam Centraal Station en IJmuiden heeft van 2008 tot en met 2013 gevaren. Per januari 2014 is deze veerdienst opgeheven. Als reden werd gegeven dat er geen rendabele toekomst meer was wegens teruglopende reizigersaantallen. Met 255.000 passagiers heeft de Fast Flying Ferry in het laatste jaar een daling genoteerd van 3,8% ten opzichte van vorig jaar.

T

he railway stations Amsterdam Central and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol are well connected to the international high-speed train network.

I n 2013, the high-speed Thalys train carried 46% more passengers between the Netherlands and Belgium than in prevois years. On the Amsterdam-Brussels route, the number of connections increased from 9 to 13 in order to satisfy travellers’ demand. This explains for the most part the increase of 46.3% on this route. On the long-distance route between Paris and Amsterdam, Thalys registered an increase of 0.6%. Most Thalys passengers still travel between the Netherlands and Paris. The market Netherlands-Belgium has significantly increased but remains small.

One of the reasons accounting for the increase of Thalys passengers is the fact that the high-speed Fyra train was taken out of circulation. In early December 2012, the Fyra, on the HSL-South route, connecting Amsterdam and Brussels took it’s first journey. In January 2013 NS took the Fyra out of service due to various technical reasons.

It was then replaced again by the regular Intercity, which ran before the introduction of the Fyra.

s a result of the two large mooring locations for cruise ships, the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) and the Felison Terminal in Velsen/IJmuiden aan Zee, the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area is extremely accessible via the water.

I n 2012, these terminals received a total of 1,242,509 passengers, including 355,687 river cruise passengers, 343,669 sea cruise passengers and 543,153 cruise ferry passengers. This means an increase of almost 11% for the river cruise. The total number of passengers in the port of Amsterdam increased by 3% in 2013.

The Fast Flying Ferry ran between Amsterdam Central Station and IJmuiden from 2008 to 2013. The service was cancelled in January 2014 owing to declining passenger numbers. With 255,000 passengers in 2013, the hydrofoil service recorded a decrease of 3.8% compared to the previous year’s figures.

In total, Amsterdam registered a record 11,262,000 hotel overnight stays during 2013 (+6.6%). If we consider the distribution of overnight stays between the leisure and business sectors we can clearly see that both increased in 2013, the business segment slightly more (+7.0%) than the leisure segment (+6.3%).

B esides the fact that there were significantly more Dutch overnight stays registered in Amsterdam (+18.6%), overnight stays generated by other markets also increased, including Belgium (+17.2 %), Germany (+17.9%), Great Britain (+8.6%) and France (+8.6%). American overnight stays showed a decrease of 4.1%. Due to the economic crisis in Spain, the number of overnight stays generated

by Spaniards in Amsterdam dropped by 14.4%.

For the first time in several years overnight stays from the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) displayed different trends. Whereas overnight stays from Russia (+20%), China (+9.8%) and to a lesser extent Brazil (+3.8%) displayed significant growth rates in 2013, the overnight stays from India showed a decrease of 11.7%.

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area also underwent important changes in the past year. With a growth of 6.9%, the amount of overnight stays in hotels in the region has increased slightly more than in the city of Amsterdam itself. The amount of overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 8.6% (compared to 4.1% in Amsterdam).

RevPAR (revenue per available room) is the key performance indicator in the hotel industry. In 2013, Amsterdam’s RevPAR was €93.30. This means that in spite of the increase in the number of hotel rooms, the RevPAR grew by 3% compared to the previous year.

n addition to the Dutch market, Great Britain and the United States form the largest markets for Amsterdam hotels. From this it can be concluded that English is the native language and official language of about 30% of the foreign visitors to Amsterdam.

Voor het eerst sinds jaren vertonen de bezoekersaantallen uit de BRIC-landen (Brazilië, Rusland, India en China) verschillende trends. Waar de hotelovernachtingen uit Rusland (+20,0%), China (+9,8%) en Brazilië (+3,8%) in 2013 significant groeiden, lieten de overnachtingen uit India juist een daling zien van 11,7%.

Ook in Metropool Amsterdam heeft zich afgelopen jaar een belangrijke ontwikkeling voorgedaan. Met een groei van 6,9% is het aantal hotelovernachtingen in de regio namelijk iets sneller gestegen dan in de stad Amsterdam. Het aantal overnachtingen van buitenlandse gasten is met 8,6% gestegen (in vergelijking met 4,1% in Amsterdam).

De RevPar is het meest volledige meetinstrument binnen de hotellerie. Voor de Amsterdamse hotels lag de RevPar in 2013 op € 93,50. Dat betekent dat ondanks de groei van het aantal hotelkamers, de RevPAR met 3% is gestegen t.o.v. vorig jaar.

Only a part of these trade shows is international. ost trade shows in Amsterdam take place annually and strengthen the long M term attraction of the city of Amsterdam by their recurring nature.

The list includes exhibitions with more than 20,000 visitors. These exhibitions can either be public exhibitions, trade shows or exhibitions that appeal to a mixed public. The largest public trade shows in Amsterdam take place in the Amsterdam RAI. In addition to the Amsterdam RAI there are also a number of exhibition locations in the city, i.e. the Westergasfabriek, the Beurs van Berlage and the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam. Smaller trade shows take place here (Chocoa Trade Fair and Conference, Sieraad Art Fair, Unseen Photo Fair) together with exhibition and conference side events such as symposia.

Amsterdam also hosts other important events of a comparable nature. For example, each year the opening of the cultural season, the Uitmarkt, takes place in Amsterdam. During this event some 500,000 national visitors get a taste of the new cultural programme and tickets for cultural events are sold. n Amsterdam vonden in 2013 in totaal 749 meetings plaats die voldeden aan de gestelde criteria. Hieronder vallen zowel corporate als non-corporate meetings.

Bijna een kwart van deze meetings is non-corporate. Toch zijn deze meetings verantwoordelijk voor 58% van het totaal aantal congresdeelnemers in Amsterdam.

Gemiddeld worden non-corporate meetings door 777 deelnemers bezocht, dat zijn 57 deelnemers meer dan in 2012. De corporate meetings zijn met gemiddeld 167 deelnemers beduidend kleiner dan non-corporate meetings.

n 2013, medical meetings remained the most frequently organ­ ized type of meeting. Contrary to previous years there were more meetings related to industry and finance than to ICT and techonology.

n 2013 duurden meetings in Amsterdam gemiddeld 3,5 dagen. Het verschil tussen corporate en non-corporate meetings was hierbij miniem. De afdeling Business Marketing heeft bij het verzamelen van de gegevens erop gelet dat hotels puur de duur van het congres aangeven en niet de data van vooraf gereserveerde kamerblokken.

Hierdoor weerspiegelt het resultaat ook daadwerkelijk de duur van een meeting, deze is per definitie ‘het aantal dagen met inhoudelijk programma’.

n 2013, the average length for meetings in Amsterdam was 3.5 days.

There was a marginal difference between the corporate and non-corporate sectors. While collecting this data, the department of Business Marketing asked hotels to solely report the duration of the meetings, leaving out any data relating to reservations in advance. The result therefore reflects the actual duration of the meeting itself, as defined by “the number of days spent on a topic-driven agenda”, rather than the duration of the stay.

4% of the meetings that were related to industry were organised by a corporate 8 organisation. This is also the case for 90% of meetings related to technology.

Medical conferences were also commonly organised by the corporate sector. However, the share of meetings organised by an association remains significant (43%).

In 2013, meetings took place across 25 different disciplines. Amsterdam appears to be in a position to attract conferences in very varied disciplines.

Door een groei in het totale aantal meetings en een hoger aantal deelnemers aan non-corporate meetings, is het aantal deelnemersdagen in 2013 met 26% gestegen. rote meetings genereerden in 2013 significant meer deelnemersdagen G dan in 2012 (+81%). articipant days are the best way to measure the volume of the meeting sector. Due to an increase in the total number of meetings and to a higher number of participants at noncorporate meetings, the total number of participant days grew by 26% in 2013.

I n 2013, large meetings generated significantly more participant days than in 2012 (+81%) due to an increase in the number of meetings and in the number of participants. Since 2008, the number of participant days generated by large meetings increased by 845%.

After a slight decrease in 2012, the number of small meetings increased strongly in 2013 (+18%). The number of participant days follows the same trend (+21%). Since 2008, the number of participant days generated by small meetings has increased by 45%.

The number of participant days generated by medium-sized meetings decreased by 35%, and the number of meetings by 21%. Since 2008, the number of participant days for this category has dropped by 23%.

Between 2008 and 2013, the total number of participant days doubled.

Bovendien worden meetings het gehele jaar door gehouden en leveren zij een maandelijkse bijdrage. Vanwege het 35ste congres van de European Society of Cardiology was het aandeel binnen het totaal aantal zakelijke overnachtingen het grootst in augustus (38%).

I n the global ICCA cities ranking for 2013, Amsterdam is in 12th place with 120 meetings.

Compared to the ICCA rankings for 2012, the number of meetings decreased by 1.6%. By contrast, most of the other cities in the top 10 increased.

Most cities in the top 10 have a greater capacity of meeting and hotel accommodation. Amsterdam’s ambition is to achieve 6th place in the ICCA ranking in 2018.

UIA counted 114 meetings in Amsterdam in 2013. This equates to 13th place in their global rankings. The difference between competitors to Amsterdam such as Hong Kong (112), Sydney (124) and Geneva (126) is relatively small.

I n 2013 was het gemiddeld aantal deelnemers 8% hoger dan in 2012. In april, augustus, september en oktober lag het boven de 1000.

In augustus was het gemiddeld aantal deelnemers het hoogst, met 3.480 (in plaats van 632 in 2012).

Dit werd veroorzaakt door het 35e congres van de European Society of Cardiology en haar 30.000 deelnemers.

Ruim de helft (53%) van de aanvragen komt vier tot twaalf maanden voor aanvang van de bijeenkomst binnen. Bij 16% van de aanvragen is dit ĂŠĂŠn jaar. De afdeling Business Marketing ontvangt aanvragen gedurende het hele jaar. In 2013 waren de aanvragen goed verspreid gedurende het jaar, met uitzondering van een kleine piek in juli en een lager activiteitenniveau in augustus.

Choice of season and lead time

I

n 2013 Business Marketing received 283 leads with a lead time of between one month and five years. Compared to 2012 this is a decrease of 8%. Only a small proportion (3%) came as a last-minute enquiry. Almost a quarter (24%) of the enquiries have a lead time of 2 to 3 months prior to the start of the meeting. More than half (53%) of the requests are received 4 to 12 months prior to the start of the meeting. For 16% of the enquiries this is 1 year. And only 5% are requested 2 to 5 years prior to the event. he lead time for a non-corporate meeting is significantly T longer than that for corporate meetings. 43% of noncorporate meetings have a lead time of over one year, compared to 13% of corporate meetings.

Business Marketing receives enquiries during the entire year. In 2013, the enquiries were well spread over the year, with a small peak in July and a lower level of activity in August.

The enquiries received by Business Marketing primarily relate to the months in the high season for business meetings: April to June and September to November.

he enquiry and lead time differ for the various conference sectors and depend on the sector and service required by the meeting planner in order to organise the meeting. On the one hand there are services required well ahead of the event: 40% of enquiries for Professional Conference Organisers are received by the department Business Marketing more than one year in advance of the event. On the other hand some services are requested at shorter notice: for instance, 77% of enquiries with respect to restaurants are made no earlier than six months in advance.

I n general the demand for hotels, special venues, Destination Management Companies and meeting locations is higher than for other services.

Just as the city receives more corporate conferences, there are also more enquiries for corporate meetings (76%) than non-corporate meetings (20%).

Er zijn congresgangers van ongeveer 40 verschillende nationaliteiten geïnterviewd, waarbij de grootste markten de VS, Groot-Brittannië en Duitsland zijn.

Travel companions Around 47% of convention visitors travel alone, while 34% come in the company of colleagues.

Particularly significant is the fact that 18% come with a family member or partner.

n totaal zijn de congres bezoekers in Amsterdam heel tevreden over hun bezoek. Zij geven net als de toeristische bezoekers gemiddeld een algemeen oordeel van een 8,1 op een schaal van 10. e meest positieve bezoekers zijn de Amerikanen en de Britten, terwijl de D Nederlanders iets kritischer oordelen over hun eigen land.

Bezoekers uit andere, niet-gespecificeerde landen gaven het hoogste totaal oordeel (8,2).

De aspecten met de hoogste tevredenheidscore zijn bereikbaarheid met het openbaar vervoer, sfeer, veiligheid en het winkelaanbod (deze aspecten scoorden respectievelijk een 8,3, 8,2 en tweemaal een 7,9).

De ‘vriendelijke mensen’ zijn in totaal door 42% als positief aspect genoemd en de ‘mooie, oude historische stad’ in totaal door 35%. De sfeer was dus duidelijk top of mind bij de respondenten. Het aspect ‘cultuur-historie, geschiedenis en cultureel erfgoed’ werd in totaal ook goed gewaardeerd, maar slechts 2% noemde dat aspect als eerste.

42% heeft niets als negatief ervaren. ‘Het weer’ was het tweede aspect wat in totaal het meest genoemd is (15%). ‘Duur’ kwam op de derde plaats (13%). Niet top of mind, maar wel veel genoemd waren de aspecten ‘vuil, vies’ en ‘veel fietsers, last van fietsers’.

The ‘friendly people’ was named by 42% of respondents as a positive aspect, while the ‘beautiful, old historical city’ was named by 35%. The atmosphere is therefore clearly on top with respondents. The aspect ‘cultural history, history and cultural heritage’ was also greatly appreciated but only 2% rated it as number one.

42% did not experience anything as negative. ‘The weather’ came second (15%) and ‘cost’ was third (13%). ‘Litter, dirty’ and ‘many bicyclists, annoyance with bicyclists’ were also cited but not as a chief complaint.

De congres verblijfsbezoeker bekijkt vrijwel geen informatie ter voorbereiding van zijn bezoek, indien dat wel wordt gedaan zoekt men informatie op het internet. De boeking van de accommodatie wordt voor 50% geregeld door de werkgever, de rest boekt hoofdzakelijk via internet en gebruikt dan specifiek boekingssites, de website van de accommodatie zelf of een online reisbureau/ touroperator.

Tijdens het verblijf

De gemiddelde zakelijke verblijfsbezoeker blijft iets meer dan vier nachten in de stad en verblijft in een vier- of vijf-sterrenhotel. Naast zijn congresactiviteiten gaat hij ook wandelen door de stad, uit eten, winkelen, musea bezoeken en de traditionele architectuur bekijken. Meestal verplaatst hij zich per tram of te voet. Hij maakt meer dan gemiddeld gebruik van de taxi.

Eindindruk

In Amsterdam is hij vooral tevreden over de bereikbaarheid per OV, het winkelaanbod en de sfeer. Hij houdt minder van het feit dat alles duur is en van het weer. Gevraagd naar een algemeen cijfer voor Amsterdam geeft hij net als de toeristische bezoekers een gemiddeld cijfer van een 8,13 op schaal van 1 tot 10.

The average convention visitor is a foreign man in his early forties. He arrives by plane and then gets around by train or taxi. Half of these visitors are coming to Amsterdam for the first time. He is usually travelling alone or with one companion (usually a colleague or family/ partner).

Early bookers make up 72% of this group – meaning they decide to come to Amsterdam at least two months beforehand. The convention visitor hardly ever seeks information to prepare for the trip, and if they do they use the internet. The booking of accommodation is done by the employer in 50% of the cases. The rest book online, usually via a booking site, the hotel’s website or a travel agency/tour operator.

During the visit

The average business traveller stays slightly more than four nights and stays at a four- or five-star hotel. Besides their convention activities, they also wander the town, go out to eat, shop, visit museums and look at traditional architecture. They usually travel by tram or foot.

(Inter)nationale corporate meetings

(Inter)national corporate meetings

Corporate meetings zijn (inter)nationale bijeenkomsten met een zakelijk doel (meetings, productlanceringen, klanten evenementen, trainingen, incentives etc.) waarbij het initiatief altijd wordt genomen vanuit het bedrijfsleven en de boeking is georganiseerd door een bedrijf.

(Inter)nationale non-corporate meetings

Non-corporate meetings onderscheiden zich van corporatemeetings doordat de bijeenkomst georganiseerd wordt door een (branche)vereniging c.q. associatie. Er bestaan twee varianten, te weten:

I. Associatiecongressen

Associatiecongressen brengen mensen samen met gemeenschappelijke professionele, wetenschappelijke of sociale interesses. Een associatie is een (inter)nationale vereniging van mensen met eenzelfde interesse of vakgebied. Door hen georganiseerde congressen hebben als kenmerk dat het veelal gaat om terugkerende evenementen met een lange aanvraagtijd die zelden binnen een korte tijdsduur in hetzelfde land georganiseerd worden. Associatiecongressen rouleren veelal tussen verschillende landen. De organisatie van dit soort congressen is veelal in handen van een groep van initiatiefnemers die een ‘local organizing committee’ (l.o.c.) vormen. Deze lokale organisatie nodigt de internationale vereniging uit om het congres te houden in het thuisland van de l.o.c.

In Amsterdam bestaat het grootste aandeel binnen de non-corporate sector uit associatiecongressen. Wanneer in dit rapport gesproken wordt over non-corporate congressen, worden daarmee associatiecongressen bedoeld.

II. Gouvernementele meetings

Gouvernementele non-corporate meetings bestaan uit mensen die samenkomen om ministeriële of gouvernementele onderwerpen met elkaar uit te wisselen, kennis te delen of te vergaderen. De deelnemers van deze bijeenkomsten kunnen een nationale of internationale origine hebben. Bij deze gedefinieerde doelgroep gaat het om bijeenkomsten op nationaal, Europees of internationaal niveau. In Amsterdam vinden deze bijeenkomsten in mindere mate plaats, het grootste gedeelte van gouvernementele meetings wordt in de regeringsstad Den Haag gehouden.

Corporate meetings are (inter)national meetings with a commercial aim (meetings, product launches, client events, training sessions, incentives etc.) in which the initiative is always taken by the business sector and the booking is organised by a company.

(Inter)national non-corporate meetings

Non-corporate meetings are distinguished from corporate-meetings because the meeting is organised by a (trade) association or body. There are two variants, i.e:

I. Association conferences

Association conferences bring people with common professional, scientific or social interests together. An association is an (inter)national association of people with the same interest or discipline. One feature of conferences organised by associations is that they are often recurring events with a long lead time which are seldom organised within a short time in the same country. Association conferences often rotate between various countries. The organisation of this type of conference is often in the hands of a group of initiative takers who form a ‘local organising committee’ (l.o.c.). This local organisation invites the international association to hold the conference in the home country of the l.o.c. In Amsterdam the largest share within the non-corporate sector consists of association conferences. Any reference to non-corporate conferences within this report is also understood to refer to association conferences.

II. Governmental meetings

Governmental non-corporate meetings consist of people who come together to exchange ministerial or governmental themes, to share expertise or to assemble.

Participants in these meetings may be of national or international origin. For this defined target group, this involves meetings at a national, European or international level. These meetings take place to a lesser extent in Amsterdam, with most government meetings held in the governing city of The Hague.

Venues

Conference venues are meeting locations which are not established within a hotel.

These can be special conference centres but also exhibition and/or meeting rooms of cultural or educational facilities.

De duur van een meeting wordt in dagen aangegeven. Hierbij worden alleen de dagen met een inhoudelijk programma meegeteld. Dagen voor bijvoorbeeld op- en afbouw van een meeting worden hierin niet meegeteld.

The number of participant days is a quantitative measure which takes into account two important criteria of a meeting: the duration of a meeting in days and the number of participants. Both of these criteria are multiplied together in order to be able to compare meetings to each other.

Lead

Beurs

Lead

A lead is an enquiry from a meeting planner who is organising (a part of) a conference or meeting.

Lead time

The lead time is the time from the enquiry of a lead until the actual date of the meeting.

Trade show

A trade show is an exhibition which is organised so that businesses from a specific industry can exhibit and demonstrate their latest products and services.

If only people from the relevant business sector are admitted we refer to this as a trade show.

RevPAR

The RevPAR (Revenue per available room) is an indicator which is used in the hotel trade. This figure expresses the occupation per room, whereby the total room revenue is divided by the total available rooms.
