n 2013 Amsterdam was home to 799,442 inhabitants. There are 2,349,870 inhabitants in the total Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. The area constitutes 14% of the total population of the Netherlands.
Binnen de gemeente zijn personen tussen de 20 en de 39 jaar duidelijk oververtegenwoordigd t.o.v. de rest van Nederland (36% t.o.v. 25%). Personen ouder dan 45 jaar zijn in Amsterdam minder vertegenwoordigd dan het landelijke cijfer (36% t.o.v. 45%). In 2013 telde Amsterdam 178 nationaliteiten. De helft van de Amsterdammers komt uit het buitenland en/of is van buitenlandse afkomst. Ter vergelijking: in heel Nederland is het aandeel buitenlanders 21%. Amsterdam is dus bij uitstek een multiculturele destinatie. Vooral het aandeel niet-Westerse allochtonen in Amsterdam is met 35% meer dan drie keer zo hoog dan in heel Nederland (12%). A msterdam heeft een hoog opgeleide beroepsbevolking. In totaal heeft 59% van de werkende bevolking een opleiding in het hoger onderwijs gevolgd. Vergeleken met heel Nederland (35%) is dit erg hoog. Het verschil zit niet alleen in het hogere onderwijsniveau, ook het aandeel van werknemers met een laag onderwijsniveau (12%) is significant lager dan in heel Nederland (22%).

Compared to the national figure for the Netherlands (35%), this is very high. The difference is not only in higher education. Even the share of employees with only a low level of education (12%) is significantly lower than across the whole of the Netherlands (22%).

msterdam maakt onderdeel uit van het kloppende hart van de Nederlandse economie, de Randstad. Het Amsterdamse bruto binnenlandse product (BBP) per hoofd is met € 57,963 bijna 60% hoger dan het landelijke BBP per hoofd van € 34.551. egin 2013 waren er in de gemeente Amsterdam 112.802 bedrijven geregistreerd. B Dit is een stijging van 5% ten opzichte van het voorgaande jaar. In Metropool Amsterdam waren er 237.455 bedrijven gevestigd (4% meer dan in 2012) De ontwikkeling van het aantal nieuwe bedrijven in Amsterdam c.q. Metropool Amsterdam loopt evenwijdig met het Nederlandse gemiddelde (2%). Het Amsterdamse aandeel binnen de totale Nederlandse bedrijvensector blijft stabiel. Metropool Amsterdam huisvest nog steeds 18% van alle bedrijven die in Nederland geregistreerd zijn. Als gevolg van de economische recessie is de werkloosheid in Amsterdam opgelopen van 6% in 2009 naar 8% in 2012.

A This shows an increase of 5% over the previous year. The number of businesses across the entire Metropolitan Area rose to 237,455 (+4% over 2012). Amsterdam leads the way when it comes to the development of new businesses compared to the Dutch national average (+2%). Amsterdam’s share in the total Dutch business sector remains very stable. Currently the Metropolitan Area is still home to 18% of all registered businesses in the Netherlands. As a result of the economic recession, unemployment in Amsterdam has increased from 6% in 2009 to 8% in 2012.
