Texas Christian University Recreation Center The Recreation Center placed in the center of the Texas Christian University campus comprehends the remodeling of an existing 1970 facility and an addition of over 10.000 m². The program called for a 1,100 m² weight and fitness center, a five-court, multi-use sports hall, racquetball and squash courts, multi-purpose rooms, a climbing wall, a running track, an outdoor swimming pool, sand volleyball courts and passive recreational facilities. The architect responded to this extensive program by expanding, remodeling and reconfiguring the building's windowless precast concrete structure in inventive ways so that the recreational center better suits student life and the campus setting. The 22,000 m² project added 10,600 m² of new construction and 11,200 m² of renovated and reconfigured space to double the size of the existing 1970 building. The majority of new space is located to the east of the existing building nearest the center of the campus. At the center of the building, the old sports hall was refurbished and expanded vertically to create a venue for competition volleyball with spectator seats. On the south side of the building, the indoor swimming pool was completely remodelled, and to the west, a wing of sports laboratories, classrooms and offices was modernized. Between the new wing and the refurbished indoor pool, a courtyard was designed to unite a new outdoor leisure pool and landscaped areas for cookouts, pool parties and other social events. Inside, old and new wings are unified around a large, two-story lobby and a central, L-shaped corridor that serves as a pathway through the campus. The reaction of users to the new center has been extremely good, the location has proved to be a real plus for the student life at Campus.
