Hello and welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court and this performance of Haunted Scouse When you work in a big, old theatre like the Royal Court one of the things that you need to get used to are the theatre ghosts. We’ve got spectres in the stalls, phantoms in the foyer and banshees behind the bars. Now we can finally give them their moment in the limelight thanks to Haunted Scouse! Gerry Linford came up with the idea of a dearly departed husband who wouldn’t depart. As usual, his script is full of big laughs and some really touching moments. It’s great to have him back for 2024. The main roles were made for Mickey Starke and Lynn Francis who are both great Liverpool actors. A married couple in real life, they certainly enjoyed the bickering and name calling that was required in the script. There were real tears in the rehearsal room in parts as well. We are blessed with a fantastic cast throughout. You will all know Helen and Paul from plenty of past shows here and Julie is back for her second run out on the main stage. They are all experts in getting every last bit of comedy out of a script that is overflowing with it.

I’ve said before that Liverpool is a city full of stories and storytellers and since we announced this show we have been approached by actors, staff and members of the public who all have a ghost story to tell. I don’t know if there is anything out there but plenty believe in ghosties and ghoulies. I hope you get through the show without getting snatched up by the ghosties or grabbed by the… never mind. Liverpool’s Royal Court continues on its journey to work towards talent development across the city

There is no doubt Liverpool is renowned for its wealth of talent but we, along with the rest of our city’s theatre organisations and institutions, recognise we need to do more to ensure we are accessible, engaging and aspirational if we are to be truly representative and inclusive of the communities we serve. It is a long-term continuing process and funding is key as is working together with the theatres across the region. Over the past three years we have laid down the foundations, initiating our plans for meaningful and real change. This includes the theatre’s programming, engagement, accessibility and relationships with artistes, communities, creatives, individuals, institutions, organisations, Schools/FE. We are working towards ensuring our talent development programmes are applicable, realistic and robust. Listening and engaging in the first instance to a wide cross section of creatives and communities – recognising and taking ownership of our failure to be fully inclusive and to take a proactive approach to ensure there is inclusivity and diversity across the sector A brief look at a few of our talent development projects so far:

Community Music AAA (Access All Areas) is a partnership project together with three grassroots organisations: Positive Impact, Capoeira For All, and Catalyst performing arts supported by funding from Youth Music. Children and young people aged 6 – 25 can access free musical instruments, musical theatre, hip hop, dance, singing, drama and performance

Raw Talent Young people from our youth theatre continue to have access to auditions and employment opportunities – during the past 3 years, 6 young people have been cast in Terriers, written by Maurice Bessman touring to schools and venues across the country. More recently working with Fury films, 120 young people aged 15 – 25 from across the city took part in audition workshops for the film of Terriers at Fire Fit in South Liverpool, MYA’s Space in Bootle and The Vibe in Huyton. 8 young people will be working with the Director to support the script development.

Mentoring This is a pilot programme supported by PH Holt Trust and Curious Minds – eight mentors from the creative industries have been paired with mentees – providing support, guidance and shadowing opportunities in acting, marketing, production, directing, writing, set design, and music skills. This talent development initiative will support eight young black, asian and minority artistes and creatives develop their skills as they progress through the industry.

Programming Our Boisterous Theatre strand of programming brought us a main house production of Bouncers, in August and September introducing four new actors to the main house stage – and new audiences to the theatre. The Alternative Black Cabaret Showcase – now a regular bi-monthly show presenting some of the best black comedians and singers on the circuit and with a platform to showcase emerging and existing local talent. Co-production with Red Ladder in September/October, with a cast of professional actors and 20 members of our community choir. Stagewrite – our new writing classes/workshops to encourage and support new writers to develop their work to full production. We continue on our journey with a number of other talent development initiatives in progress as a matter of priority to ensure we remain accessible, adaptable and continually listen and learn. It will take time and investment and with your continuing support for all we do. We will make a difference.


Royal Court Ghost Stories

The Royal Court is an old building with many spirits, phantoms and phantasmagoria! Here are just some of the scariest and most definitely real ethereal encounters from over the years

We have, in order of appearance: 1. Les

Les Joynson caretaker who died on the roof in the early 1970s. Cat called Napoleon. Friendly, opens and closes doors. Smell of cat wee whenever he appears. He is a friendly ghost but if anything goes missing backstage then it is always down to Les!

2. Lady In Red

One of our staff saw an old woman in a red cardigan in the downstairs bar. After the Liverpool Echo put the story in a piece about theatre ghosts a man phoned up the next day. He was the licensee here in the 1980s and after a Motorhead gig he saw an old lady in a red cardigan appear at the back of the stalls, walk the length of the room and then disappear. He had never told a soul!

3. Woman In Smock

After a teachers’ event in the basement one of the teachers went to the ladies. She came out asking where the woman in the smock had gone. She had been talking to her in the mirror about the theatre before she walked out of the door. A member of staff had been waiting outside the door the whole time and nobody had come out!

4. The Grim Reaper

On Debbie the cleaner’s first day she was in the circle with Christine the cleaner when she saw the Grim Reaper himself! She went to say something to Christine but thought better of it. Christine asked her if she had seen something because she had seen the Grim Reaper too!

5. Cavalier On The Fly Floor

Tommy the stagehand and his big mate were up on the fly floor working on a show in the 1970s when they saw a man dressed in a Cavalier costume come through the wall, walk towards them then turn and walk through the same wall further up. They got very frightened and ran away!

6. The Stairs On The Far Side Of The Circle

None of the staff like going down these stairs. They will take a long diversion to go around them but when you ask them why, they don’t remember doing it. They don’t know why they are scared!

7. Crying Usher

In the balcony several people have seen a figure in a 1920s dress sitting in seat D12 crying. We believe it to be an ex usher from the 1920s who haunts the area where she previously worked. Nobody books that seat, even when they are booking online!

8. The Backstage Lift

One night in 2006 the burglar alarm went off and Andy the building manager came in to check it out with one of the techs. They couldn’t see anything wrong until they realised that the lift had moved up from the 3rd to the 4th floor. There was no power going to the lift! A picture of a real ghost, yesterday

9. Ghostly Time Stop

When a member of staff took a bunch of students around the theatre on a ghost tour his watch stopped about 20 minutes in. It started up again about 10 minutes after the tour had finished, some 2 hours later. The watch has not lost any time before or since!

10. Marie’s Phone

Marie the wardrobe mistress was watching from the side of stage. She took her phone out to film some of the show but didn’t get much footage. When she played it back there was silence then a voice hissed “Maarrrieeeeee”. There was nobody else on that side of the stage!

Julie Glover Linda Julie has worked with the Royal Court in Hey Bunny Get Loose, Masquerade, My Fairfield Lady and Stage Write Nights. She is delighted to be back playing Linda and feels so lucky to be involved with such a great creative team. Julie has worked in theatre, film and television for over twenty years. Michael Starke Charlie Michael began his professional career at Liverpool Playhouse in the 1984 production of Cavern of Dreams by Carol Ann Duffy. The next few years saw him appearing almost exclusively at the Everyman in Liverpool, where he appeared in such shows as The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui, Hamlet, The Winter’s Tale, The Taming of the Shrew, She Stoops to Conquer, Three Sisters, and No Holds Bard. Michael was the first ‘guest star’ in the Olivier Award winning The Play What I Wrote, directed by Kenneth Branagh. Other theatre work includes Be Bop A Lula, Blood Brothers (Leicester Haymarket) Anything Goes (National Tour). Film work includes: No Surrender by Alan Bleasdale, Distant Voices, written and directed by Terrence Davies, The 51st State directed by Ronny Yu and starring Samuel L Jackson. Michael is probably best known to TV viewers as Sinbad, a role he played for fifteen years in Channel 4’s Brookside. He then spent six years playing Ken Hopkirk in Yorkshire TV’s The Royal and Jerry Morton in Coronation Street. Michael was in the Christmas episode of Casualty. Michael also featured in the Channel 4 series The Virtues. In 2010 Michael was one of the three Edna Turnblads in the national tour of Hairspray with Michael Ball and Brian Conley. He followed that with the role of Monsignor O’Hara in the Whoopi Goldberg produced national tour of Sister Act. His recent roles here have included A Nightmare On Lime Street, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To Fazakerley, Scouse Of The Antarctic, Special Measures and Shed. He has also completed two films: Jack Ryan directed by Kenneth Branagh and a British film, Longtails, produced and directed by Elizabeth Arends.

Since making his debut at the Royal Court with the acclaimed comedy drama Miracle of Great Homer Street in 2018, Gerry has become a regular here. Plays such as Ellen & Rigby, Yellow Breck Road, The Menlove Avenue Murder Mystery and Macca & Beth have proven to be big hits with critics and audiences alike.

Ellie is a designer for theatre and screen, based in Liverpool and trained at LIPA. Emma Bird Director Emma has directed critically acclaimed productions at Brighton, Manchester and Liverpool Fringe Festivals. Notable recent productions are New Dawn Fades: A Play about Joy Division and Manchester by Brian Gorman, (Dancehouse Theatre, Manchester 2018); King of the World by Brian Coyle (Liverpool & Manchester Fringe Festivals, 2018); Two by Jim Cartwright (Manchester Fringe Festival 2018); Bleeding with Mother by Sarah Cassidy (53Two, Manchester 2017); We Apologise for the Inconvenience by Mark Griffiths, (3MT, Manchester, 2017); A Passion for Rationals (Sara Harris, Brighton Fringe Festival 2014); Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo; Hey Bunny Get Loose and Stocking Fillers (Liverpool’s Royal Court Studio).. Jamie is the in-house graphic and video designer at Liverpool’s Royal Court. Starting as marketing assistant at the theatre in 2005, he has been part of the Royal Court since it’s rebirth as a theatre in 2006. He now designs artwork for all Royal Court productions alongside working on video content for the Royal Court stage and beyond.

Company Biographies

Marie Jones Wardrobe Supervisor Marie studied fashion and then moved on to theatre costume interpretation at Mabel Fletcher College. Marie’s work as a freelance costumier has included costumes for Oldham Coliseum, The Royal Exchange, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Jimmy McGovern’s film Liam, Beyond Friendship for Mersey Television and the many pantomime dames who have appeared on the Everyman stage. She has worked extensively at the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and has recently been employed as full time Wardrobe Supervisor at the Royal Court. Most recently Marie’s work at the Everyman and Playhouse has included: Much Ado About Nothing, The Electric Hills, The Flint Street Nativity, The Tempest, Unprotected, Billy Liar, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolfe, Urban Legend, Fly, Breezeblock Park, The Entertainer, Still Life And The Astonished Heart, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Anniversary, Dr Faustus, The May Queen, Cruel Sea and All My Sons.
