The IAFP: who are we, and what do we do?

T

he International Alliance of Furnishing Publications (IAFP) was founded in 1997, and began bringing together the most important B2B publications in the sector to offer a global perspective of the furniture world, and contribute to its general improvement – as well as their own promotion. The alliance enhances communication between global and local markets by encouraging the exchange of information, enriching editorial content as well as marketing strategies. The IAFP’s member magazines are well known to their respective international bodies, federations,

associations, institutions, show organisers and producers. They are the most active publications in their countries, and their representatives attend the key furniture events. During those events, they also represent their countries, markets and the companies advertising on their pages. The members meet several times during furniture shows held all over the world, co-operate with the shows and associations, provide commercial activities, take part in congress events, symposiums and panels, and organise events and summits concerning the furniture trade. n

The IAFP starts 2016 in Turkey

A

fter meeting in 2015 in Guadalajara, Shanghai and Paris, the first meeting of IAFP members in 2016 was organised in Istanbul, from 26th January at the Istanbul Exhibition Centre (IEC). The meeting, which 12 members of the alliance attended, was hosted and sponsored by MOSFED, the Turkish Furniture Federation. The representatives present were Patrick Ledoux (Belgium), Milena Kirilova (Bulgaria), Laurent Lyard (France), Max Merkel (Germany), Sylvia Khan (India), Takayoshi Nagashima (Japan), Zilahi Imre (Romania), Demid Kashirin (Russia), Jake Son (Korea) and Zeki Yucel (Turkey). During the meeting, the owner of Turkey’s magazine, Nesip Uzun, and the new Operative Secretary of the IAFP, Eva Zillmann, from Romania, were also present. The meeting, opened by the IAFP President and the General Co-ordinator of Ekin Publishing

Group Zeki Yucel, saw alliance topics discussed, including: the regular treasurer report; renewal of the website; preparation of the IAFP newsletter; publication of a 20th anniversary book;

A

s a member of the federation, and employer of the chairman of the IAFP, during CNRIMOB 2016 Ekin Publishing Group undertook responsibility to implement a World Furniture Congress, co-organised by MOSFED and the IAFP. During the congress, held on 27th January 2016 in Istanbul’s WOW Convention Centre, representatives from 11 countries (Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, France, Germany, India, Japan, Romania, Russia,

South Korea and Turkey) made presentations and provided the latest information about the world’s furniture markets. The session was conducted by IAFP Chairman Zeki Yucel, and after the opening speeches, presentations were made one by one. The congress was opened by Nesip Uzun, the owner of Ekin Publishing Group. After welcoming the audience, he emphasised the importance of such events to provide a flow of information between global furniture markets. Similarly, Ahmet Gulec, the president of MOSFED, also expressed his pleasure at organising such a high-profile event in Turkey. Straight afterwards, the secretary-general of

MOSFED, Arzu Bayraktaroğlu, started the country presentations by providing a detailed report on the Turkish furniture market. After Turkey’s presentation, those IAFP members representing other countries made their presentations: Patrick Ledoux, Belgium; Carlos Bessa, Brazil; Milena Kirilova, Bulgaria; Laurent Lyard, France; Max Merkel, Germany; Sylvia Lee, India; Takayoshi Nagashima, Japan; Zilahi Imre, Romania; Demid Kashirin, Russia; and Jake Son, South Korea. The World Furniture Congress ended with a gala dinner, with representatives of the Turkish furniture industry and its key players in attendance. n

The IAFP’s 20th year celebration The IAFP will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2017. During its 20-year history the IAFP’s membership has grown fourfold, and the association has become well known all over the world.

Its members plan to realise a special 20th year celebration programme during the well-attended international trade show, MIFF, taking place next March in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Thanks to the assistance of the show’s organiser UBM, there will be a three-day programme including events, meetings and dinners. IAFP’s 2017 AGM also will be held there, on 7th March, a day before the show begins. n

It is the only magazine associated with the IAFP in South America, and for many years has co-operated and exhibited at Movelsul, the most important fair for home furniture and accessories in Latin America.

Professional visitors from Brazil and 35 other countries attended the 20th edition of Movelsul Brazil. Major brands were among the 238 exhibitors present at the event, which expects to report more than 30,000 visitors in attendance over the five-day duration of the show. This year, 30 importers from Argentina, Bulgaria, Qatar, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the US,

France, Morocco, Mexico, Mozambique, Panama and Paraguay participated in business roundtables with 120 Brazilian companies. The hope is that, in the midst of a crisis scenario, exports will aid the recovery of the sector – the forecast is US$35m in business. Of the world’s total value of imported furniture – approximately US$160b – Brazil boasts less than 0.5% of the market. There is great potential, and Brazilian exports still have much room to grow. In addition, the devaluation of the Real against the Dollar puts Brazil in a very competitive position. This year’s Movelsul Brazil featured the design Grand Prix Senai Innovation, at which three multidisciplinary teams competed in the search for solutions for the furniture supply chain. Movelsul Brazil 2016 brought together companies offering office, kitchen, bedroom, laundry, bath, garden furniture, electronics, kitchens, dining and living room products, carpets, upholstery and mattresses. Held since 1977 by Sindmóveis Bento Gonçalves – the year in which the furniture industry established itself as a leading activity in the area’s economy – Brazil Movelsul has attracted come 15,000 exhibitors throughout its history. n

or more than 25 years, MÖBELMARKT has reported from the fairs in Asia – it is already a tradition for staff to take off to the Far East in March to visit the important events in South-east Asia and China. This year’s visit took in Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Dongguan and Guangzhou – MÖBELMARKT attended eight shows in total. During the exhibitions, reports were conitnuously published on www.moebelmarkt.de, and afterwards subscribers could read detailed write-ups in the magazine. In March, MÖBELMARKT not only travelled to Asia, but also to Poland, where the Meble Polska exhibition was held in Poznan. Besides international events, MÖBELMARKT also

attended several fairs in Germany, including Light & Building in Frankfurt. Close partnerships with furniture shows and their organisers does not mean that the magazine visits a fair and publishes a report thereafter. It also means a running exchange of ideas with the management of exhibition corporations and associations throughout the year. In the future, MÖBELMARKT will continue its strategy to stay permanently in direct contact with industry players in the global furniture sector – not only at exhibitions, but also through visiting companies and factories or joining seminars, conferences and other relevant events. n

Mebelny Biznes partners industrial design contest

M

ebelny Biznes magazine launched a partnership with annual industrial design competition, Artliga, last year. The official award ceremony, held on 6th April at the Crocus Expo as part of Moscow International Furniture Show (MIFS), saw winners announced across four categories: NEXT (kitchen furniture), HOME DESIGN (cabinet furniture), WORK SPACE (office furniture), and INNOVATION. The contest was initiated by Russian companies Ametist and Via Ferrata three years ago. The main aim of the project is to identify the best samples of Russian-produced furniture, and to promote progressive design and engineering solutions in the manufacture of the domestic furniture. During Artliga 2015 the jury, headed by Cyril Cheburashkin, the head of the furniture design department at SG Stroganov University, took into consideration 130 entries. These models, which entered production last year, were evaluated by experts from the trade press, de-

signers, and the managers of Ametist, Via Ferrata and Cvet Divanov. After the first qualifying round, 16 factory semi-finalists were named. Following a final vote, just four companies was awarded.

The chief editor of Mebelny Biznes, Irina Fadeeva, announced the winner in the WORK SPACE category. The winners of Artliga 2015 were awarded with a certificate, RUB 100,000, commemorative statuettes and diplomas. The best works were exhibited at MIFS in a separate booth, and attracted a great deal of visitor attention. The next edition of Artliga will be held in a year’s time. n

Published three times a month Home Living magazine, owned by AIK Co, holds various industry lectures and expert discussions by experts once every two months, in an effort to help solve the industry’s problems.

P

ublished three times a month, the Home Living newspaper covers the Japanese furniture and interior industry. It mainly reports on the current economic situation, furniture industry trends and both domestic and international furniture exhibitions. Last July, AIK Co launched a B2B magazine covering bed and bedding, entitled Shinsou Journal, reasoning that the bed industry, like

furniture, is crucial to everyday life, and demanded a new framework for the promotion of its healthy development. AIK Co, with support of furniture magnates, established the Japan Executives Association of Furniture Trade and Industry in 1995. Its members comprise major Japanese furniture stores, furniture and interior manufacturers, wholesalers, fabrics, textile, and bedding firms. Furthermore, AIK Co invests energy in developing world furniture trade. For this purpose, it has built close relationships with various international furniture trade organisers such as China Foreign Trade Guangzhou Exhibition General Corp. n

MagMob’s website gets a powerful upgrade

D

ue to increased demand for online content from both readers and clients, the editorial team of the Romanian publication has invested time and work in creating a completely new web platform. Since it was launched in September 2015, the website has received very good feedback from readers, who found the responsive layout not only clean and elegant, but also easy to use. The principal aim of the new structure was to provide an instant overview of the furniture categories and subcategories, to let readers make their selections using tags, and to bring relevant articles related to a reader’s chosen topic to their attention. Built to be a strong advertising tool for the industry players, the site offers display ads and product presentations, all mixed

together in a manner to avoid visual overload, and promising a pleasant user experience. Since the print edition output remains unchanged – six editions are published each year – the new online portal uses just a small number of the articles published in print, and the paper version accommodates just a few news items among those posted previously online. This way, those who want to see the whole picture will be encouraged to subscribe to the printed magazine and access the www.magmob.ro website daily. Of course, the magazine enjoys good visibility on social media platforms, mirroring trade and design news, and enjoying productive interaction with readers, many of which are industry professionals. n

The awards scheme sets out to identify the best new products launched at the principal UK event – which took place at the Birmingham NEC and was 25% larger than previously, in both size and visitor count. Furniture News’ editor Paul Farley, co-ordinator of the awards and chair of the judging panel, says: “There was so much great feedback and support off the back of the debut that we were able to take the programme forward significantly at the 2016 event." Bed retailer Dreams sponsored this year’s

awards, which enjoyed increased coverage and a specially-designed display of the shortlisted and winning entries. This year's judging panel comprised: Maxim Romain, general manager for e-commerce giant Wayfair Europe; visual merchandising consultant Andrew Durham; design rights body ACID CEO and co-founder Dids Macdonald OBE; and Malcolm Walker, director of buying for independent retailer Furniture Village. The winners were: Think Rugs’ Hong Kong 7526 rug in grey and yellow (Value Category); Bentley Designs’ Cadell dining and occasional range (Mid-level Category), with Gallery Direct’s Wycombe din-

Meubihome visits Möbelmarkt

O

n 31st March 2016 a delegation from Meubihome visited publishing house Ritthammer Verlag in Nüremberg. Because of the airport shutdown in Meubihome’s hometown, Brussels, the journey was completed by car. The delegation comprised Patrick Ledoux, and Florian Ledoux – the latter was enjoying his school holidays at the time!

SPRING | 2016

Ritthammer Verlag was represented by Max Merkel, who guided the representatives of Meubihome around the editorial floor and through the publicity and design department. Ritthammer Verlag employs 20 people. The in-house graphics department in particular

drew the attention of the Belgian delegation, as did the large editorial team. After the tour, a meeting was held behind closed doors over a coffee. Talks were held prior to an extended meeting that evening. Meubihome, a bilingual furniture business journal operating in the Benelux market (covering some 30 million inhabitants) and Möbelmarkt, the leading B2B furniture magazine in the German-speaking world (95 million inhabitants) are discussing how they can establish more permanent co-operation. Both magazines are complementary and can exchange a great deal of information. The aim of the meeting was to try to structure information streams. Eventually, both magazines will share information and fair reports – which will also reduce their carbon footprints. This was the first step in a series of measures to make two of the leading European magazines work more efficiently alongside one another. n

Young & Design sponsored by GDAMILANO

Y

oung & Design, a competition sponsored by GDAMILANO magazine, which is owned by Giga Publishing, aims to provide greater visibility to young designers. Since 1987, the competition has rewarded designers under 35 years old during the Salone del Mobile. Milano for the selection of products made by Italian companies exhibiting at the fair, or at Fuorisalone. It is a truly historic award that has always enhanced visibility before professional designers, and also represents a springboard for international emerging talent. The 29th edition boasted a typically high-profile jury, comprising designers who previously won the award and are important personalities in the field of design: Monica Graffeo; Matteo Ragni; Sandro Meneghello; and Marco Paolelli. The president was, as always, the president of ADI, Luciano Galimberti. Last, but not least, was an outsider who is not a professional designer, but a designer nonetheless – Miche-

lin-starred chef Davide Oldani, who designed several objects now in production, and who brought his knowledge of kitchens and restaurants to the selection of the winners. His contribution was very important, considering that 2016 was the year of the biennial EuroCucina fair. Since 2014, architect Armando Bruno, MD of Studio Marco Piva, has taken the reins of the competition and co-ordinated its organisation. The competition is a key event for young designers who offer strong projects that are suitable for the production process. The sponsors are four important companies that produce furniture accessories and components – Tabu, Ternoscorrevoli, igus and Ostermann. n

How to approach an old market with new offers?

Bulgarian designers participate in Milan’s HOMI fair

T

en Bulgarian designers from the Cherga Group participated in this year’s edition of the specialised HOMI fair in Milan. The fair is held at the end of January and showcases products for the interior, decoration, accessories and garden furniture sectors, and more. Atanas Zgurev, Creative Line studio, Irena Pamukova, Ivan Arnaudov,

The designers showed furniture for the home and garden, jewellery, decorative ceramics and lighting fixtures. The Bulgarian designer products attracted traders, architects and interior designers from different countries. Over 60 firms showed interest in the presented products, mostly in furniture for the home and garden and the lighting fixtures.

Maia Ivanova, Nikolay Mihaylov, Milena Paleva, Velichko Velikov, Vera Ilieva and Yordan Dobrev participated in this first presentation of Bulgarian design at HOMI. Most of the products they showed were seen for the first time by the public, and some of the exhibits were designed specifically for the fair.

The Bulgarian designers were noticed by representatives of Salone Satellite, the largest world platform for young talent, in which, until now, Bulgaria has not been represented. They invited the representatives to participate in the next prestigious edition. Another recognition of Bulgarian design was the second invitation – to participate in ICFF in New York, alongside selected products from all over Europe. Cherga’s participation in HOMI 2016 was made possible with support from MD magazine and financial aid from GS Malmgren. n

Concurrently with the latest edition of the Furnitex Connect fair in Melbourne, organised by the Australian Furniture Association, three IAFP members attended the Furnishing Futures Conference.

A

s a result of good co-operation between Peter Zapris, publisher of Furnishing International (the Australian member of the IAFP) and Patrizia Torelli, CEO of the Australian Furniture Association (AFA), during the Furnitex Connect event two other IAFP members were invited to take part in a panel discussing ways of approaching established markets with new offers. The conference focused on Australian and international research and practices that have informed, and will continue to inform, industry standards, best practice and the growth of small- to medium-sized businesses. Representing China and Romania, Wang Mingliang and Imre Zilahi gave the Australian audience an insight into the international furni-

ture market, priorities to be taken into consideration while planning export-import trade activities, and trend analyses of how the design and functionality of furniture can have major importance in different markets around the world. The many connecting points between China and Australia were highlighted by Wang Mingliang, founder of Shanghai’s Furniture China trade fair. The panel demonstrated that in recent years Chinese companies have invested in original design, and now exports to Australia are focused mainly on middle- and high-end ranges. The next AFA event, named Furnitex & design, is scheduled for 810th July 2016 in Brisbane. n
