Yassin Mohammed Yesuf, University of Gondar, Ethiopia

Adonawit Ayalew Bewketu, Bridge of Hope Orphanage Centre, Ethiopia

Child abandonment has a substantial effect for both the child and the parents. Studies on parents who abandon their children are unavailable as they are hard to reach individuals, particularly when the abandoning is in public. This study, therefore, explored the lived experiences of mothers/ fathers who abandoned their children in public. In this study qualitative approach with case study design was employed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with purposefully selected seven mothers/fathers whose children are living in Bridge of Hope Orphanage Centre in Gondar city. Existing documents were used to recruit respondents and to illicit additional data. Guided by descriptive phenomenological design, thematic content analysis was employed. In the present study, three core themes emerged: parents’ conditions before child delivery, parents’ life experiences of child abandoning, and parents’ psychosocial conditions until rejoining. Contextual factors before and after the child is born (e.g. challenging life situation, unwanted pregnancy, rape, peer pressure, stigma) played important roles in later child abandonment. Economic hardships, exacerbated by sociocultural factors pushed parents to abandon their children. Child abandonment is a process that includes contemplation, state of indecision, preparations and taking actions. Psychological sufferings were prevalent not only before but also after rejoining. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that child abandonment and rejoining are complex and lengthy processes that induced significant psychosocial burden on parents. Therefore, it is imperative to employ preventive measures including community awareness creation campaigns about child abandonment.

68816 | Educational Model of Leprosy in Primary School Students: An Approach to Social Stigma Reduction

Sri Linuwih SW Menaldi, University of Indonesia, Indonesia

Adhityawarman Menaldi, University of Indonesia, Indonesia

The effort to eliminate leprosy in Indonesia has taken place for a long time, but new cases have been detected. The government has launched numerous efforts in light of eliminating leprosy. However, the results could have been more satisfactory. Medical and community approaches must be carried out simultaneously to obtain comprehensive treatment. One aspect that needs to be emphasized is the stigma reduction towards leprosy patients and the patients' self-stigma. KATAMATAKU Universitas Indonesia conducted action research whose objective was increasing awareness, considering complementing the comprehensive leprosy management. The first collaboration was conducted with the Gemala Ananda School in Jakarta, Indonesia, specifically for fourth-grade students. The tiered educational model was chosen in order to produce impactful activities. After acquiring the education provided by the KATAMATAKU team, students were asked to re-explain the information to their closest social circle of leprosy, which are their families. The abovementioned student retelling experience was asked to be recorded, which was later reassessed by the school teachers. Through this educational intervention trial, a better educational model could be applied to reduce the stigma of leprosy in Indonesia.

Nada Shobah, Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University, Indonesia

Mohammad Mahpur, Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University, Indonesia

Rahmat Aziz, Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University, Indonesia

One of the crucial criteria for Islamic boarding schools in understanding the dynamics of psychological independence among santriwati (female students) is the presence of companions who can help them recognize their abilities and self-awareness in every moment they experience, and thus making them master the transpersonal field. This study focuses on achieving the quality of independence among santriwati as a result of transpersonal assistance using creative writing media so that each santriwati will be able to independently overcome the problems they face while living at Islamic boarding schools. The research method is a qualitative method with a Participatory Action Research design. There are five stages of PAR used in this study based on Gerald Susman's PAR Model, comprising diagnosis, action planning, taking action, evaluation, and specifying learning. The data were obtained from preliminary study data (open questionnaires), interviews, and documentation in the form of creative writing in the Mentoring Module which became the main data source. The transpersonal techniques used in the assistance consist of simple meditation, interactive reflection, and creative writing. The data analysis techniques are composed of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study confirm a conceptual finding of the dynamics of psychological independence of santriwati, comprising the increase in their knowledge on the cognitive aspect, sensitivity sharpening on the emotional aspect, and strength building on the conational aspect.

Kim Danella Santos, De La Salle University Manila, Philippines

Jasper Vincent Alontaga, De La Salle University Manila, Philippines

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder may manifest different behaviors during their checkups due to unusual stimuli inside the dental clinic. The dental practitioner and other staff may encounter difficulty anticipating the success of the treatment if both dentist and patient come unprepared. This study intended to explore the undesirable behaviors of patients with ASD and the challenges encountered through the experiences of dentists. The study used a qualitative case study method which was participated in by five (5) dentists through interviews and five (5) patients through observation. First, it was identified that the uncooperativeness of patients with ASD was one of the undesirable behaviors manifested during a checkup. Second, carrying out dental treatment, handling patients with ASD, communicating with patients, and making patients comfortable add to the difficulty of dentists. Third, the ideal treatment plan will not be implemented if behaviors were not properly addressed. And lastly, receiving training on handling patients with ASD, providing positive behavior support during treatment, and proper scheduling played a significant role in managing the behaviors of the said patients. Hence, it is important to identify the profile of each patient before the start of the treatment so the
