“IDRP - AN INVESTMENT FOR THE FUTURE OF THE DENTAL RESEARCH FIELD” The Standing Committee on Research and Education within IADS, is proud to announce the first international student led dental research exchange network which aims to transfer and foster research knowledge to the ones who desire to make a difference within their dental communities. The students will attend research internships which consist of assisting a research project developed within the University member of the IDRP network. The internship takes place for about 2 – 8 weeks, the students being selected through a rigorous selection process and eventually having the facilities covered by the host university.

1 8

In 2011, universities from 16 countries entered the newly created network offering research destinations: Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Iran, Italy, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey. We formed a team of SCORE Local coordinators who are in charge of successfully implementing and assuring the continuity of the Program. The International Dental Research Program (IDRP) is what we would call an investment for the future of the dental research field. The today’s students who will benefit from the program by acquiring early research skills, might become the tomorrow’s research leaders who will push forward dentistry towards innovative and more successful treatments.

A group of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment who have maxillary impacted canines are included. Records are photographs, models, lateral cephalometric and panoramic radiographs. The second set is consisted of 3D volumetric images obtained from CBCT, intraoral photographs and models. A questionnaire will be used to assess the exact position of the canine, the presence of root resorption, the difficulty of the case, treatment alternatives and the quality of the images. A group of orthodontist and oral surgeon will complete the questionnaire for the two sets of the records. Also for an interexaminer test the questionaire is going to be completed for the second time after a week. Statistical analysis will be performed.

Description of the project: ORAL CANCERS IS ONE OF THE MAJOR WORLDWIDE HEALTH PROBLEM DUE TO HIGH INCIDENCE, REDUCED SURVIVAL RATE AND ALSO TO FUNCTIONAL AND COSMETIC DEFICIENCY THAT ACCOMPANIES THE DISEASE AND IT’S TREATMENT. SINCE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND METASTASIS OF ORAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA (OSCC) IS CRUCIAL TO ACQUIRE AN ANGIOGENIC AND LYMPHANGIOGENESIS PHENOTYPE BY THE MALIGNANT CELLS, WE PURSUE THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: 1)THE ANGIOGENIC AND LYMPHANGIOGENIC PHENOTYPE FOR DIFFERENT OSCC VARIANTS; 2)IDENTIFICATION OF SOME STATISTICS MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SANGUINE AND LYMPHATIC VESSELS MICRODENSITY IN OSCC VARIANTS, AND ALSO BETWEEN INTRA- AND PERITUMORAL VESSELS MICRODENSITY; 3)QUANTIFICATION OF PROANGIOGENIC AND LYMPHANGIOGENIC FACTOR EXPRESSION IN TUMORAL CELLS AND THEIR STROMAL CELLULAR PARTNERS AND THE EXPRESSION RATE OF THEIR RECEPTORS IN ENDOTHELIAL CELLS. TO CARRY OUT ALL THESE DESIDERATUM WE WILL USE THE FOLLOWING METHODS: 1)HISTOPATHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS FOR THE ESTIMATION OF OSCC VARIANTS, THE DEGREE OF DIFFERENTIATION, THE DEPTH AND PATTERN OF INVASION; 2)SIMPLE AND DOUBLE IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS TO INVESTIGATE THE PHENOTYPE OF NEWBORN VESSELS, INVOLVEMENT OF PROANGIOGENIC AND LYMPHANGIOGENIC FACTORS AND CELLULAR STROMAL PARTNERS IN OSCC NEOVASCULOGENESIS; 3) MORPHOMETRICAL ANALYSIS FOR THE ESTIMATION OF SANGUINE AND LYMPHATIC VESSELS MICRODENSITY AND CELLULAR STROMAL PARTNERS; 4)STATISTIC ANALYSIS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF MEANINGFUL STATISTIC CORRELATIONS BETWEEN MORPHOCLINICAL PARAMETERS AND VESSELS MICRODENSITY, THE DEGREE OF PROANGIOGENIC AND LYMPHANGIOGENIC FACTOR EXPRESSION AND CELLULAR STROMAL PARTNERS DENSITY IN DIFFERENT OSCC VARIANTS. CARRYING OUT THESE OBJECTIVES WE HOPE TO ESTABLISH THE DEGREE BY WHICH SANGUINE AND LYMPHATIC VESSELS MICRODENSITY AND ALSO THE EXPRESSION RATE OF MAJOR PROANGIOGENIC AND LYMPHANGIOGENIC FACTOR AND THEIR TARGET RECEPTORS HAS PROGNOSTIC VALUE IN ORAL CARCINOGENESIS.
