Welcome Dear Delegate, I am delighted to welcome you to the 12th IABM Annual International Business Conference and Awards. 2016 has been by any standards a turbulent year in our industry and this conference provides a unique opportunity to get it all into perspective, learn the lessons, take the positives and carry new ideas and strategies forward to 2017 and beyond. We have a packed agenda that hits all the issues and opportunities head on, and I am certain delegates will leave with a raft of ideas that will make a real impact on their thinking and strategies for the coming year. Last year, the conference majored on the shift from traditional hardware to a new virtual, software-based world where commodity IT platforms are becoming commonplace, with our members adding their ‘special sauce’ applications to facilitate media delivery across an ever-growing range of platforms. That trend has continued and grown over the last year as traditional broadcasters are embracing OTT and entering the fray with the new media players. Our members are overwhelmingly reinventing themselves to embrace this change, but the resultant shift from Capex to Opex is causing some pain in the near term – as are the big shifts in currency exchange rates that have happened this year. Collaboration continues to be a key issue and I’m delighted that the industry has made real strides on this over the year. IABM has played a leading role with the establishment of our Industry Collaborative Groups Endorsement Program, with the first endorsee being AIMS – with whom we collaborated to present the highly successful IP Interoperability Zone at IBC this year. We are all working together as never before, and this theme echoes throughout the conference, culminating in a plenary debate on Friday – ‘Collaboration and standards: does one solution fit all?’ - that brings together leaders from IET, AIMS, EBU, AMWA and SMPTE. It's not just collaboration between suppliers that has grown, but also with end-user communities. Gaining a deeper understanding of our customers’ rapidly changing business requirements naturally helps drive focused and profitable technology development. IABM has responded to this shift by adding more endusers to the conference agenda to help IABM members better understand their customers’ business imperatives.

This year we have also introduced two new masterclasses into the pre-conference program – one on sales and marketing in the new collaborative environment, and the other run by the AIB to give some end-user case studies and a perspective on the latest hot topic of cyber security. Business transformation in the face of disruption is at the heart of the conference plenary sessions, with debates and case studies on how companies are reinventing themselves to continue to be relevant in this new multi-platform, IT-based media world. The packed agenda also includes what promises to be an illuminating session on Friday – ‘Focus on the future; what will broadcast look like in 2020?’. Broadcasters, media companies and suppliers get together to gaze into their crystal balls. Our Friday opening keynote is from Rasmus Ankersen an inspirational author, entrepreneur, speaker on performance development and a trusted advisor to businesses and athletes around the world. He will illustrate his thesis that complacency is not an option with real-world examples that will be a positive call to action for all delegates – whatever the state of their businesses. The gala dinner on Thursday evening includes our Annual Awards, where we will be recognising some very worthy winners – including the Peter Wayne Award for the year’s most outstanding technology development, Young Person of the Year, Business Woman of the Year, Excellence in Sustainability and the presentation of an honorary membership to someone who has had a major impact within our industry over many years. Amidst all this change, relationships continue to be key, and this year we are providing more opportunities than ever for the vital networking that so often opens up new thinking and new opportunities. Thursday 1 December 2016 – Main Plenary Welcome & Introduction John Ive, Director of Technology & Strategic Insight, IABM John has a career in the television industry spanning 40 years including periods with the BBC, the former IBA (Independent Broadcasting Authority) and Sony Professional. His experience covers; senior management, technology, operations, marketing, training, research and development. In recent years, he has consulted and given presentations worldwide on industry business trends, television operations, new technology including IT and file-based workflows, content distribution, professional audio, High Definition and Ultra High Definition. As a research engineer at the IBA and Head of Research at Sony Professional Europe he led teams that pioneered digital technology in broadcast production including the digital video tape recorder and digital effects. As a Director, he subsequently went on to manage Sony’s broadcast product and business strategy in the Europe.

Saleha Williams, Managing Partner & Executive Producer, Clarity Creative Saleha has lived and worked all over the world (London, Paris, Milan, LA, New York, India, Singapore, across the Caribbean and more). She has over 20 years’ experience as a Global Marketing Director and Media Producer for companies including the BBC, Sky, BT, NAB Show and the London 2012 Olympics. To date, Saleha has directed and conducted over 500 interviews with TV Technology CEOs, Hollywood Film Producers, Broadcasters and Government Ministers, and delivered multi-platform marketing programmes, for some of the most demanding brands in the world. Today, as well as driving Clarity forward, Saleha produces and presents a series of international live media technology shows and events, produces and directs client videos and product launches, and coaches many of our clients on public speaking and media video presentations.

Thursday 1 December 2016 – Main Plenary Keynote: Industry facts and figures – an update Peter White, CEO, IABM As Chief Executive, Peter’s responsibilities include the development and implementation of the association’s strategies; representing our members at executive level to organizations around the world and overseeing the smooth running of IABM. Together with the whole team, Peter is focused on establishing IABM as the authoritative voice of the industry. Originally Peter qualified as an accountant and before joining IABM he enjoyed a long career as the FD and then CEO of many complex organizations across a number of sectors including: printing and graphics; direct response and direct marketing; high tech capital equipment manufacturing and nursery products design; manufacturing and retail. He has also been a Tutor at the Leadership Trust, a consultant for lean manufacturing, best practice and Kaizen and Chair of PE backed businesses.

Corey Bridges, CEO & Co-Founder, LifeMap Solutions Corey has worked at the intersection of high technology and popular culture throughout his career, usually in an executive marketing or business development role. His passion is building disruptive and innovative companies and bringing them successfully to market. Professional highlights include bringing James Cameron’s CAMERON | PACE Group to China and Europe, launching Netflix, and product-managing Internet pioneer Netscape's flagship web browser.

Gordon Castle, Head of Industry Area Mediacom, Ericsson Gordon is responsible for creating and maintaining a strategic viewpoint on media focused products, technology and services across all Ericsson Business Units. Prior to joining Ericsson, he was with PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Entertainment, Media & Communications advisory practice based in Atlanta. Gordon’s 25+ years in the media industry include roles as SVP and head of CNN Technology responsible for the News Group’s technology strategy, implementation and training; and as SVP, Senior Technology Fellow, Turner Broadcasting.

Graham Pitman, IABM Vice Chair and Chairman, Yospace A co-founder of Pro-Bel whilst in his mid 20s Graham is a serial entrepreneur. Past roles include SVP at Chyron, CEO at Pro-Bel, where he led the MBO of Pro-Bel back from Chyron and orchestrated the merger with Snell & Wilcox, Vice Chair of Snell, Chairman at ATG, where he oversaw business turnaround, and, until recently, Chairman at Vidcheck where he directed the sale of the business to Telestream. Graham especially enjoys the dynamism of early and mid-stage stage businesses and helping founders realise their aspirations; he is presently exploring another early stage business in the sector.

Ian Munford, Director of Product Marketing, Media Solutions, Akamai Ian’s role focuses on the entire portfolio of media solutions offered by Akamai including all marketing, product development, and business development across EMEA. Previously he was Commercial Director at dock10 one of the UK’s most advanced TV studio, post-production and digital media service facilities that pioneered cloud based production techniques.

Paul Thompson, Director Strategic Solutions, Avid Paul is responsible for shaping and managing Avid’s business solutions focus for its major global customers. Paul has over 20 years’ experience in the complex solutions marketplace across technology development, operations, sales and consulting. Paul joined Avid in 2013 as Director Strategic Solutions providing a business solutions focus to its’ major customers and opportunities worldwide, after previously holding commercial responsibility at Ericsson (previously Technicolor) for the outsourced managed services of ITV, the largest UK multi-platform commercial broadcaster and content producer between 2009-2013.

Thursday 1 December 2016 – Main Plenary Case Studies: Business Transformation David Ingham, Associate Partner, M&E, GBS Europe, IBM David works with the content creators and distributors to reinvent their businesses for the digital era. David has specifically focused on content and commercial workflows during his career and how organisations can adopt technology to add value to these processes. Digital transformation and reinvention continues to be a significant theme with clients as they look for partners who can help them develop differentiation in the marketplace through personalised content and services. David is currently focused on how emerging technology like artificial intelligence, IoT and blockchain can be integrated into media workflows to deliver this value.

Joop Janssen, CEO, Aperi With more than 25 years of experience creating value in the high-tech, media and telecom industries, Joop is currently Managing Director, and the senior principal, of Yoap Holding and has served as CEO of the publicly traded sports media technology innovator EVS. Joop was Chief Executive of Vitec Videocom and served on the Group Executive Board of the Vitec Group Plc in the UK. During his nine years with Vitec Videocom, he architected significant and profitable growth and brand expansion, including numerous acquisitions and breakthrough technologies (garnering a technical Emmy Award). He has also served as president of Phillips Broadcast (formerly BTS) North America, where he was instrumental in the successful divestment to Thomson Multimedia and the subsequent acquisition of the Grass Valley Group.

Larry Kaplan, President, SDVI As an industry leader and serial entrepreneur, Larry has an extensive track record of building and running successful businesses in the media and entertainment market. Prior to founding SDVI in 2013, Larry served in the Office of the CEO at Harmonic Inc. following its $307M acquisition of Omneon in 2010, where he was the founding Chief Executive Officer. As Executive Chairman and then Vice Chairman of the Board at Omneon, he successfully guided the company from concept to market leader, and ultimately to successful acquisition by Harmonic Inc.

Steve Reynolds, CTO, Imagine Communications Steve provides the vision and leadership that drives the company’s long-term Technology Strategy, Business Development and M&A activities. Steve brings 20 years of technology leadership in the cable industry to Imagine Communications. At Comcast, he served as Senior Vice President of Premises Technology, overseeing the strategy, roadmap and development of all technologies employed in service delivery to the customer premises. Prior to Comcast, Steve was Senior Vice President of Technology at OpenTV Incorporated, a world leader in digital and interactive television technology.

Thursday 1 December 2016 – Main Plenary Keynote: The Transmedia Revolution Amy DeLouise, Video Director/Producer Video director/producer Amy is an experienced nonfiction digital storyteller. With more than 400 productions to her credit, Amy is a leader in the field of short form digital storytelling for large surfaces at live events as well as small screens for mobile web and social platforms. She has garnered more than 40 creative excellence awards including multiple Telly Awards, Peer Awards, New York Festivals, Aurora, and the CINE Golden Eagle. She was also honored with the Woman of Vision Leadership Award from Women in Film & Video (WIFV) of Washington, D.C. for her leadership in the industry. Amy is a sought-after speaker and workshop leader at industry conferences such as GV Expo, CCW, and NAB Show. She is producing the Global Innovation Exchange thought leaders conference during NAB/Shanghai this winter. Amy teaches several popular online courses on Lynda.com, including Script Writing for Nonfiction Video, and her well-regarded The Art of the Video Interview. Her new book The Producer’s Playbook: Real People on Camera (Focal Press/Routledge) brings real-world strategies to content creators working with non-actors in front of the camera for everything from documentaries and reality TV to web videos and testimonials. A long-time champion of women media-makers and an entrepreneur who has led several successful media ventures, Amy is currently spearheading the Women in Film and Video #GalsNGear initiative focused on building community and creating new opportunities for greater gender balance in the technical fields of media production. Thursday 1 December 2016 – Main Plenary Case Studies: Business Transformations Mike Ellis, Head of Production Architecture, BBC Mike’s main focus is on the production facilities, infrastructure and processes used by the BBC to deliver top quality TV, Radio and Online content. Starting in the BBC's TV studio engineering team, he moved to BBC R&D where he specialised in DAB and IP networks, giving him a wide experience in radio, television and online technologies. From BBC R&D, he took on the role of Technical Architect for the BBC's newest production centres in MediaCity:UK and Broadcasting House. Now within the BBC Design and Engineering Technology, Strategy and Architecture team, Mike is part of the team choosing the BBC’s path for the future.

Paul Flook, Head of Broadcast Engineering, ITN It was over 36 years ago since I entered TV engineering. I started at the BBC as a graduate engineer. I was lucky enough to gain experience on a good proportion of aspects of TV engineering. After nine years of entertaining and lively work I transferred over to ITN. 27 years later I am still at ITN having had a very challenging career spanning a wide range engineering. I have seen the technology move from composite/component, to digital, to widescreen, then to high definition, and now to IP. Each technology has had its challenges and its benefits. At every migration of the technology it has usually been accompanied by a change of work flow in some form or another. We are now entering another age which could potentially the most significant. IP should offer wide ranging alterations to financial models of operations.

Chris Johns, Chief Engineer, Sky Chris has been with Sky since its inception in 1989 having started his career in broadcast with the BBC. Chris formed part of the initial technical team tasked with launching Sky’s multi-channel analogue satellite offering. As Chief Engineer, Chris has been at the forefront of delivering broadcast functionality to the platform such as the multichannel digital playout facilities, Dolby Digital audio, server-based solutions and compression systems. Having played a key role in Sky’s HD launch and design of its HD infrastructure, he continues to oversee the product quality. Sitting on many broadcast groups and societies, Chris is a SMPTE Fellow and Honorary Fellow of the BKSTS.

Guillaume Lemoine, Chief Architect TV Technology, TF1 Guillaume is responsible for defining the technology roadmap and designing the core elements of TF1 audio-visual infrastructures. He works with internal engineering teams in order to make sure that projects are meeting not only their short term goals, but are also set on a future proof path. Current focus is set on transitioning from Broadcast industry specific SDI interfaces to full IP network based solutions, as well as enabling cloud technologies. Before that he started his career at TF1 leading the projects that completed the digital transformation of the News Production facilities as well as the first multichannel HD playout center in France, back in 2006.

Thursday 1 December 2016 – Main Plenary Keynote: Transformation Case Study Mick DeValck, Director Technology and Operations, VRT Mick is a civil engineer in science (Ghent University) and got an executive MBA at Vlerick in 2000. He started his career as a software engineer, and grew to R & D Manager and Business Unit Manager for imaging software at Agfa HealthCare. In 2011 he founded the startup Axsmate, and he started at VRT in November 2013 as Director Technology & Operations. He is also responsible for Research and Innovation and the Digital Production Center, and is a member of the Management Committee.

James Goodhand, Technical Specialist – Broadcast & Communications, BBC James is a recent graduate of the BBC’s Broadcast Engineer Trainee Scheme, and currently working for BBC Monitoring as a Broadcast and Communications Specialist. Having graduated from University with a degree in Physics in 2014, James’ move into the broadcast industry came from the desire to combine the knowledge from his degree, with the enjoyment he gained from working in the student technical theatre society throughout University. This summer, James was announced as the winner of the 2016 RTS Young Technologist of the Year award. He impressed the RTS jury with his technical knowledge and “ability to seek out opportunities to solve problems, and understanding the needs of the user”. While working for BBC News, James designed a system to provide BBC staff around the world with secure access to internal video feeds. This was adapted for use at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic games. James used his system to provide Team GB athletes throughout Brazil with up to five secure live video channels.

From 1991 to 2004 Simon worked for Carlton Television, the ITV franchise holder for the London region, where he held several executive roles linked to operations and emerging technologies. Simon, prior to joining the EBU, was Chairman of the Technical Council at the Digital Television Group, the industry association for digital television in the UK. He also represented UK broadcasters on the EBU Technical Committee between 2006 and 2009.

Brad Gilmer, Executive Director, AMWA Brad is President of Gilmer & Associates, Inc. He is a founding member of the Joint Task Force on Networked Media. He is the Executive Director of the Video Services Forum and the Executive Director of the Advanced Media Workflow Association. Brad is a member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and has been an active participant within the SMPTE since 1984. Brad is the first recipient of the SMPTE Workflow Systems Medal.

Howard Lukk, Consultant Director and writer Howard is one of the frontrunners in HDR production. Having shot one of the very first short films in this new format, he has hands-on experience and will share his insights with us. His short film “Emma” was shot and finished in HDR, and is currently running a successful course at national and international film festivals. Howard’s extensive production and engineering experience from The Walt Disney Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, and Pannon Entertainment made him the first choice as new Director of Engineering and Standards at SMPTE last year.

He has presented over 50 papers at industry conferences worldwide. Al holds 13 US patents and is the author of the book Video Systems in an IT Environment. He has a BSEE degree from San Jose State University and MSEE degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a SMPTE Fellow and recipient of the David Sarnoff Medal. Al writes the Cloudspotter’s Journal for TV Technology. Al has worked in the field of hybrid AV+IT systems for the past 25 years. Previously, he was a digital systems designer and technical strategist for Hewlett-Packard. He was the principal architect of HP’s first VOD server. Following HP, from 1999 to 2005, Al was the CTO of Pinnacle Systems. Next, he served as an Avid Corporate Fellow for six years. Al wrote “Video Systems in an IT Environment” in 2006 (2nd edition 2009). It was the first book to consider the convergence of media and IT systems. It set the stage for using Ethernet, IP, networked storage and server compute to build AV systems.

Friday 2 December 2016 Panel: Focus on the future Emily Forbes, CEO, Seenit Emily founded Seenit in January 2014 after spending three years in the film industry. It was when she was producing one of her own films that she discovered the power of collaborative storytelling. Seenit enables brands to create authentic episodic content at scale by activating their own fans, employees and experts to become the creators. Today everyone has a smartphone in their pocket and everyone is filming, but companies are finding it difficult to tap into this consumer behaviour. Seenit provides a video capture app and online studio to amplify the voices most relevant to your company and find the stars from your audience, motivating them to become part of your ‘mobile film crew’. Seenit was named startup of the year at The Bima Awards and The Drum named Emily as one of the Top 50 Under 30 most innovative in digital. They’re now a team of 18, based in Farringdon, and powering videos for clients such as The BBC, Team GB, The UFC, BT Sport and NBC Universal.

Roy Trosh, Group Technical Director, The Mill Roy’s career began as an apprentice at Rediffusion Flight Simulation where he helped to develop the first CGI projected visual system, acknowledged with a Queen’s Award to Industry. He studied at Brighton University, graduating with an Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1983. He then joined Cal Video Graphics in 1984 where he played a key role in automating repetitive tasks, one of which allowed CG images to be recorded onto video for the first time. Roy has been with The Mill since its inception in 1990, overseeing the growth of the company. His ability to manage and promote change has helped to keep The Mill ahead of its competition through the transition from video tape to file based workflows and, now, emerging technologies such as VR and AR.
