IAAS January 2021 Newsletter Food Security: Then and Now Build On Success by IAAS LC 5th December 2020, online (Live on UNUD IAAS Instagram)

In the advent of the COVID Pandemic, the framework of food security and its dynamics have changed remarkably. With the aim to arise from this adversity, authorities across the globe (National governments, International Bodies like UN, etc.) have molded their policies to tackle the problem accordingly. Comprehending various forms of actions undertaken paves away for youths to understand different degrees of food security needs in different countries. Conducting an event that emulates international conferences in a systematic way will certainly assist young people in the collective learning of this issue. Considering the restrictions following the threat of the ongoing pandemic and the huge impact it has had in the agricultural sector, it had been brainstorming to provide a platform where youths are educated, encouraged and energized. Fortunately, following the call for ‘Scientific Event’, a brainchild to conduct an International Conference was conceived. Taking into account the remarkable changes in Food Security and it’s dynamics, the conference was entitled ‘Global Food Status’.

Hello! Greetings from IAAS Colombia. Our academic calendar this year starts late, only until March we will start classes but nevertheless our committee is active from the beginning of the year in order to get ahead of the upcoming activities. We start by making a distribution of our members in each of the committees, in order to take advantage of each of their abilities and perform in the best way in specific activities. On the other hand we regret to say that the number of our members has decreased to 30 due to several situations. We have planned a large call for new members, both from our university, and from new universities in order to create local committees. Delivery of Donations 3rd January 2021, Oton, Ecuador This activity was very beautiful to be able to help children with different school supplies and gifts for Christmas. During the month of December, a campaign was carried out with the objective of collecting donations of school supplies and toys with the members of IAAS Ecuador to donate to low-income children, and bags of sweets were assembled as a tradition of Christmas gift. Everything was delivered in the Oton community where we were able to make many children happy.

December is a date that unites many families and expresses the affection and appreciation that one feels, that is why we organized a small gift of a mask with the IAAS Ecuador logo and a bag of candies for the members who contributed to growth of the committee in 2020 and it was so satisfying to know their enthusiasm and love. We attach some photos of members who received the gift.

IAAS Mexico

Dear IAASer, It is with great privilege and honor that I address to you for the very first time as a member of the new National Board of IAAS Mexico. January of 2021 has brought many changes and hope for the future all over the World. The winter break is a very important time for us as a country, it is a time where we spend cherished moments with our family and friends remembering the good things from the year that has left and daydreaming about the one that has just begun. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we are very happy to announce that the biggest and most important event for the region of IAAS America took place during the last week of January and the first week of January: the DMA 2021. An event dedicated to Agrotechnology and Sustainability within the America’s, where many of our members participated actively throughout the entire event as attendees and some of them as part of the organizing committee for this virtual edition of the DMA. We are very thankful for all the support and effort of every single member that selflessly has created magical events to maintain IAAS strong and growing regardless of all the hardships and challenges. We look forward to counting with your presence in our events and do not forget to Go Further, Go IAAS!!! Yours truly, Pablo de Caso Udave National Director of IAAS Mexico 21

National Elections 23rd January 2021, Online (Zoom) The national board of 2019-2020 called out for elections at the beginning of January and based on 1stround of applications, the 23rd of January was conveyed as a suitable date to carry on with the elections. There was a total of 7 applicants for the following positions: National Director, Exchange Coordinator, External Relations Coordinator, Projects Coordinator and Control Board. With presentations of 10-15 minutes per applicant, 30 minutes for Qs & As of and a final space of 15 minutes for voting gave the following members the opportunity to represent IAAS Mexico: • National Director: Pablo de Caso Udave • Exchange Coordinator: Valentina Alejandra Berríos Ávila • External Relations Coordinator: Jael Graciela Rosales Gaona • Projects Coordinator: Mairim Elizabeth Arellano Figueroa • Control Board: Saraí Vega Cuevas

During the DMA 2019 in Costa Rica, Mexico was selected to be the host for the 2021 edition. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and it was impossible to celebrate this event in the traditional way that it has been done for many years. So, together with the approval of the Regional Board and the other National Boards, an online and collaborative DMA was possible. Bringing lectures and workshops from a wide range of disciplines, but all of them aligned to the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences main vision and goal of the event. This moto was “Agrotechnology and Sustainability within the agri food sector of America”. IAAS Mexico participated actively both as organizing committee and attendees, having a total of 48 members involved throughout the entire event. In this event, a Regional Board is chosen as well, and we gladly inform that 2 of our members form part of the current RB for the period 2021, those are: • Regional Exchange Coordinator: Sarai Vega Cuevas • Regional Finance Coordinator: Joel Alberto Limones Rivera

There are 3 things to break the borders of the world: Passport, Visa, and, IAAS. IAAS is bringing the world to me, opening my eyes to the importance of agriculture as the backbone of life, and making me learn the realities of different people from different parts of the globe to build relation. In IAAS, I’ve dared to be open to manage things, to communicate ideas, be competitive, and to remain me until my highest goals have been achieved. A lot of things change over those years. Years after years, people after people, challenges, and challenges, IAAS made me realize that the only thing in the world is change. IAAS has prepared me to be ready and even to be accustomed to facing a dynamic world. Become a brave quick-resolver.
