Continental 2014 on Feddet, Sjælland, Denmark On behalf of the Danish Sheepdog Society, it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you all to this 2014 Continental European Championship in Denmark. A special welcome shall go to all competitors, judges and other officials. With only about 150 members it has been a huge task organizing the Championship. The Danish Sheepdog Society has for many years taken part in Continental Sheepdog Championship all over Europe and we feel obliged to take our part of the organizing as well. To be able to manage this, a big group of volunteers have been working hard and done their best to make CSC 2014 a proper event. I therefore want to thank all those active members that without their contributions and hard work, it wouldn’t have been possible to establish this event. I also want to thank all our sponsors for their contributions – small as big – which made it economically possible for the Society to handle the championship. I want to address special thanks to our landlord Baron Ivan Reedtz-Thott for letting us use this scenery land and to sheep farmer Frank Hansen for providing the sheep we are using. Two essential things to sheepdog trialling and have to be treated with greatest respect. After two days of qualifying trials, this three days event will culminate in the final where the winner of the Continental Sheepdog Champion 2014 and the Continental Young Handler Champion will be announced. We, in the organizing team, do all hope that you will enjoy these days of competitions in good spirit and with fairness. Hans Jørgen Andersen, Chairman, Danish Sheepdog Society

Strandegård is located in the South Zealand countryside, beautifully surrounded by fields, forest, sea and fjord. The area was crown land and belonged to King Frederik 3, but was after the Swedish war in 1662, for political reasons, given to Axel Sehested who short after resold the property. The following owners established an estate with manor house, farm barns, commercial and farm buildings, gardens, fields, meadows and woods. The manor house was built in the place where the small village of “Fiskerhoved” originally was situated. Strandegård is named for its location facing the Baltic Sea close to the sea and beach. Then for a period Strandegård had various owners until 1731, when the estate came into the possession of the Thott family , acquired by Count Otto Thott. As he didn’t have children himself, he later decided to create an entailed estate for his uncle's grandson, Chamberlain Holger Reedtz (later Holger Reedtz-Thott). The three manor houses Gavnø, Lindersvold and Strandgård were merged into this entailed estate, which in 1805 was elevated to the Gavnø barony. Strandegård was run as a manor house within the barony. In 1921 the barony was disbanded and Strandegård again became a free manor house Now Strandegård is owned by Baron Ivan Reedtz-Thott, who inherited the property in 1973 from his father Axel Reedtz-Thott. Strandegård was until then part of Gavnø Estate. Today Strandegård covers approximately 1300 hectares land of particular scenic beauty. In addition to the agricultural areas (610 hectares) and large forests and it also offers several unique natural resources, including Strandegård Dyrehave with ancient oak trees, several burial mounds, as well as the scenic peninsula Feddet. The conservation area Feddet is featuring Zealand's largest areas with cross-leaved heath (Erica tetralix) heather, juniper trees and has an abundant bird and plant life. Feddet is also known for it’s seasonally pick your organic blueberry and apple orchard. It is also where you find the environmentally certified 4-star campsite Feddet Camping. Strandegård and Feddet Camping employ yearly, 8 year employees and about 30 seasonal employees.

There’s no evidence of when the first Border collie came to Denmark, but descriptions going back to the nineteen-forties and -fifties of some farm dogs, I personally have been told, indicates that it can have been Border collies. By then it wasn’t unusual for Danish farmers’ sons to complement their agricultural education with a study visit to Great Britain. There some of them must have got to know the Border collie, and some even brought puppies home to Denmark. The Danish Sheepdog Society was established in 1980 by a small group of people, who had experienced the unique help of sheepdogs when handling their flocks of sheep or cattle. One of the main aims of the Danish Sheepdog Society is to preserve and develop the sheepdog's useful qualities and to distribute the knowledge of it’s use by arranging trails, seminars etc. During the first years in Denmark the Society was much influenced by our Swedish neighbours. At that time the Swedish handlers were more advanced in their training methods, and they were close by. But the big step forward in our training methods started in the late 80s, when the society got contact with and began inviting British trainers. Great Britain is the cradle of shepherding sheep with dogs, and has been going on for centuries. Breeding with different sheepdog breeds in order to achieve the best type of sheepdog has resulted in the Border collie. The Border collie breed is not much more than 100 years old. But successful breeding leading to the modern Border Collies is the reason why it is the most used sheepdog worldwide. And from Great Britain they have spread to countries almost all over the world including Denmark.
7 Over time The Danish Sheepdog Society have counted app. 350 members living all over the country. At the present there are about 140 active members. Frequently the members are offered clinics and courses from both local and foreign trainers — especially from Great Britain were the greatest expertise is still maintained. The Society also offers more general courses regarding obedience, dog diseases etc. The Society issues a magazine "Hyrdebrevet" four to five times a year. One of the greatest activities in the society is arranging sheepdog trials. Following most European countries, the trials are split into 3 classes, where Class 1 is for young dogs and new handlers. Class 3 is the next step forward and Class 3 is for advanced/trained dogs. The trials are often held at members of the society, who have a sufficient number of sheep and a proper place
for the trials. Since 1991 the Danish Sheepdog Society has participated in the European cooperation, the Continental Sheepdog Championship, where the best equipages from each country meet every year in August to compete for the title as Continental Champion. This year the Danish Sheepdog Society is hosting this exciting event for the third time. Over the years the Danish national team has performed very well — So far we have achieved second and third places as our best results, but we still hope that a Dane one day will stand on the top as no. 1. Also in the 'The World Trials, which are organized by the International Sheepdog Society in Great Britain, which gatherer the best equipages from the whole world, the Danish team has performed very well both individually with more dogs coming into the semi-finals the finals as a national team. This year The World Trials will be held in Fearn farm, By Tain in Scotland and a Danish team of nine dogs and handlers will participate.

Vibygård Lam is founded by sheep farmer Frank Hansen, who became a sheep farmer by a bit of a coincidence. For almost 20 years ago Frank Hansen bought a minor smallholding. Frank’s father found that he could have five sheep living on his son's land. And since his father’s five sheep were there, Frank Hansen might as well get five sheep, he concluded, only as a pleasant hobby of course. But Frank became happy with the sheep, and he became more and more interested in the animals, which soon increased in number. Frank Hansen taught himself to shear his sheep, and soon he started shearing for other sheep farmers. Meanwhile Frank’s flock became bigger, and he decided to quit his job and being professional shepherd. A tough job which is more than full time - especially at lambing time - lambing happens around the clock - even at night as day, and the shepherd has to be there to ensure that everything goes well. Later also Frank's wife, Charlotte Delfs quit her job and joined the sheep farm full time. Of course sheep dogs were needed and the Border Collies entered the farm to help managing the flocks, otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible to handle that many sheep. For a number of years, Frank and Charlotte handled the flock by themselves – only with some extra help in lambing season. From the beginning, Frank Hansen decided to produce quality lambs, and it has to be done with a high standard of animal welfare. Throughout the years, Frank has made quality a top priority - in all areas of management around his sheep - and this is perhaps the reason why he has been so successful. And Frank has steadily been able to expand his flock. Vibygård Lam is now one of Scandinavia's largest sheep flocks with about 1200 mother sheep every year delivering a couple of thousand best quality lambs to the market. Frank Hansen’s sheep and lambs are nowadays grazing over most of Zealand. The sheep farming - especially at lambing time and shearing time - is now employing a number of people, but still it’s the founder, Frank Hansen, who is in charge of it. Vibygård Lam is sold in a number of grocery stores across the country, and it is also on the menu at many restaurants. If you want to know where to buy or taste Vibygård Lam please contact KALU tel 33 24 12 22 or mailto: kalu@kalu.dk who distributes the meat to retail.

Erik bought Joe (born 4/12-2003) in 2007 from the Netherlands. Joe and Erik have so far had a fine career both nationally and internationally. In the first year together they won the Nordic Championships. The following year, in 2008, they were 4 th. at the Continental. In the World Trial 2011 they achieved the 5th. place in the final. Erik says about Joe: He is excellent to work with, calm and with a great overview and the ability to work independently when needed. Joe also has a good temperament and go well with other dogs.
Shep (born 8/4-2010) is home bred by Erik’s Joe - see above – and Erik’s Meg, who in 2011 participated at Continental and she was Erik’s reserve dog for World Trial 2011. Shep, as you see, after two successful parents. Erik says: Shep has something extra, is cool and puts pressure on his sheep. It’s the plan that Shep shall to be Joe's successor. He is in the Danish team for the first time and it shall be interesting to follow him in
Bess (born 25/10-2005) is home bred by Gunilla’s Yen ISDS 293067 and Finn’s own Roy ISDS A244896. She is, though nine years old a little lively lady who always is ready to work. Bess is very cooperative and love the collaboration. She is the type with whom to work very precisely in the trials fields, but good as well at daily and rougher work, which unfortunately can show up in trials too if the sheep become too heavy. Bess has participated in both 2012 and 2013 Continentals and in 2011 she replaced Sue at the World Trials. For Finn it's satisfying to run the third generation in straight line of his own breeding – probably not done before by a Dane.
Bill (born 17/3-2007) Has come into Christian’s life from Norway. Bill is quite a strong dog but work in a quiet way not upsetting his sheep. Some years ago Christian said: I’ve promised Bill a start in the World trials and the Continental. 2011 they were part of the Danish World Trials team in Cumbria, England, and this year Christian has fulfilled his promise to Bill now starting this Continental Sheepdog Championship.

Hope (born 1/1-2009) and Lone are first-timers in the Danish CSC team. Hope was bred by Helle Marcuslund in Norway, and she is by Star which goes back to Con McGarry's Taff. Her father is Jaran Knive’s Eddie. Lone got her when she was one year old and she has been her true companion ever since, both at work and in Trials. At home – Lone tells –Hope is always helping and like all kind of tasks, she don’t care if it's moving pigs, bringing down trees-climbing goats, catch cows on the highway, she’s always ready. Hope and Lone have previously is represented Denmark at the Nordic Championships.
Linn (born 7/3-2008) had her debut on the continental team last year and this year manifesting her position in the team. Linn originates from Norway and is by Karin Mattson's Lyn and Karin Søderberg’s Lotus. Her grandmother is Jo Agner Hansen's Tika. Per says that Linn is a very sweet and obedient dog that has a good feeling for the sheep. Linn is used both for trials and work on the large natural protected area in West Denmark
Tam (to the right) is born 6/4-2006 by Aled Owen's Roy and bred in Wales by TB Lambie. Rikke bought him from Bryn Davies in August 2010 after she’d seen him winning the qualifier in Vivod that year. It's just such a dog I always wanted, Rikke tells, and therefore she was pleasantly surprised facing Tam 2 days later when she was having a look at a dog Glyn Jones had recommended. At first Tam wouldn’t look at me at all, Rikke continues, and he wouldn’t take a single step for me either, but with Vivod in my mind I went for it. But after having him home, he immediately worked for me and has done ever since, and I haven’t for one second regretted. To Rikke Tam is the world's best sheepdog, and they have for long been a very stable team being in the CSC teams in 2011 -12 and 13. Taff (to the left) ISDS 00/296061 is bred by JR Griffith and after Butch and Coed Lyn. After doing well in the Welsh Nurseries, he first came to Jo de Meist in Belgium but later sold to Tony Ottesen, with whom he reached the semi-finals at World Trials in 2011. Rikke tells: I've always admired this dog and after several attempts, I succeeded to acquire Taff in 2013. In fact he belong to her husband Hans Jørgen, but Rikke has taken over and is now running Taff. This is the first time Rikke has qualified him to CSC

First reserve on the Danish team are Gunilla with Bill. Bill is homebred by Gunilla’s own Yen ISDS 293067 and Tony Ottesen's very famous Tweed (Zill) ISDS 240 234 who in CSC correlations obtained both a 3rd and 2nd place. Bill is a strong dog that moves everything. Despite the fact that he is now 10 years old, he is still fresh and workaholic - so much that it still is hard to hold him back – a good thing in the daily work but hard in trials. He do best on the big courses, where there’s room for him to work on the distance he needs not to disturb the sheep. Gunilla is an experienced handler who previously has done well in both the Danish CSC and World Trial teams. For Bill CSC has every time been close to, and for 3 consecutive years year Bill has been first reserve, but he is in the Danish World Trials team.
As second reserve for the Danish Team we have Kim Samson and That'll do Dodo. It's Dodo's debut in the CSC team, but Kim has participated the last two years with her dog That'll do Ross. Dodo is home bred by Kim and she started her at trials in 2010. Kim tells that Dodo has been a very natural and easy bitch to train and work with. Kim and Dodo are also known from a tv show in Danish television this year. At the Danish National in 2012 ( which is a Supreme course ) she was placed 4th, which she improved in 2013 to a 3rd place. At the Nordic Championship in 2013 Kim and Dodo made it to the finals and achieved 11th place. After this CSC Kim and Dodo are looking forward to participating in the World Trial in Scotland in September this year.

My name is Ian Brownlie, I live near Alloa, Scotland on a sheep farm, where I have 600 cross ewes, a few dogs to do the work on the farm. I am married to Nicola and we have 3 children Emma (20), Jacque (19) and Cameron (17). I have been involved with the ISDS for number of years and at present I am serving as Scottish Vice President. My father, John, ran dogs for a long time and I was always desperate to compete and so, a month before I turned 12, I got an invitation to a trials event and ran the old bitch Fly my father had. I won my first Scottish National Sheepdog Trials 2006 with a bitch named Bess. 2012 I won both Scottish National and the International Supreme Sheepdog Championships with Boredale Gus and 2013 I also both the Scottish National and the International Supreme with Mo I am delighted and honoured to be judging this year’s Continental and I wish the organisers every success. Kind regards Ian Brownlie

My name is Michael Longton, I'm 33 years old and have 3 daughters with my wife Holly. We live in the Farm house at Rooten Brook where I have farmed at along with my Father Tim, (2012 Continental judge) since leaving school. We have 550 Swaledale ewes and 50 suckler cows on 500 acres of in-bye land and 300 acres of rough fell ground. We also have some pet friendly holiday cottages which are fully open for business now! I have been trialling dogs since I was 12, the first dog I trained to national standard was Monty, with whom I won the English National Sheepdog Trials in 2004. In 2005 with Moss (Montys sire). I gained third in the supreme, the following year Monty gained Reserve English National Champion. In 2009 I qualified both Monty and Don not only for the team but also got both into the International Supreme Sheepdog Championships gaining 4th with Monty and 9th with Don. I have been on One Man and His Dog several times and have won both the Singles (2007) and the doubles (2012) which was also the first ever "live trial" on the BBC. Kind regards Michael Longton

Friday and Saturday the qualification runs with approximately 90 dogs will take place. The 8 best dogs from each day continue to the finals on Sunday.
The trial begins when handler and dog are standing at the starting post (A). From there, the dog is sent to either side – left or right - to fetch a group of 5 sheep approximately 500 meters away. The dog is to make a wide pear-shaped outrun (B) so it does not disturb the sheep until it is in the right position behind the sheep (C). Here the dog starts with the lift (the dog's way to start moving the sheep), and continues with the fetch (bringing the sheep to the handler). On the way, the sheep have to be driven through a set of hurdles – the fetch gate (D). When the sheep arrive to the handler at (A), they must go around the handler and the post and be driven directly to the 1st. drive gate (E), and then straight towards and through the 2nd. Drive gate (F). This is called the triangle drive, and it can be either clockwise or counter clockwise. When the sheep have passed through the 2nd. Drive gate (F), they should be turned towards the shedding ring (G). As the sheep enter the shedding ring, the handler, which so far has been standing still at the starting post (A), is allowed to leave it and move into the shedding ring (G). There the handler and dog have to shed off two of the unmarked sheep. After reassembling the sheep the handler will go to the pen, (H) and with the dog drive the sheep into the pen and close the gate. After reopening the sheep are driven straight back to the shedding ring (G), where dog and handler have to single out one of the marked sheep. In case of equal points the ranking will be determined by the best highest score in outrun, lift and fetch – OLF. In the outrun the dog is expected to get out to the right place behind the sheep without any help or commands from the handler. If not, points will be deducted for extra commands and stops. Throughout the rest of the run the handler is communicating by whistle or/and voice with their dog without points being deducted. Lift is the term used for the dog's way to start the sheep - speed and direction are judged. It’s of great importance that the sheep are moved the shortest way around the course – that is straghit lines and tight turns - and moved at a steady pace. Otherwise points will be deducted. The maximum time is 15 minutes

To make up for the title of The Continental Supreme Sheepdog Champion, the 8 best dogs from each of the two qualifying rounds are running Sunday in the finals. The trial begins when the handler and the dog are standing at the starting post, (A). From there the dog is sent out diagonally to the right (or left – depending which flock shall be gathered first) – to fetch a group of 10 sheep approximately 700 meters away (C). The dog is to make a wide pear-shaped outrun (B) so that it does not disturb the sheep until it come to the right position behind the sheep (C) ready for driving them towards the fetch gate (D). When the sheep arrive at the point E, the dog is commanded to leave the flock there and turn around to make a second outrun. This time to the opposite side of the first outrun to fetch the second flock of 10 sheep, (F), which have just been placed there. This flock should also be driven through the fetch gates (D), and be united with the first flock that may have drifted a bit. The entire flock of 20 sheep, shall be fetched down to and turned around the handler (A), followed by a straight drive towards and through the 1st. drive gate (G) and then turned and onwards towards and through the 2nd. drive gate (H). When the sheep have passed through the 2nd. Drive gate (H), they should be turned towards the shedding ring at (J). As the sheep enter the shedding ring, the handler, which so far has been standing at the starting point (A), is allowed to leave the post and move into the shedding ring (J). 5 of the 20 sheep are marked, and inside the shedding ring the handler and the dog must sort out the 5 marked sheep and the rest are pushed away out of the shedding ring. If any marked sheep should join an unmarked flock outside the ring, this flock must be taken back into the ring and sorting out must be redone. When the sorting is done and only the 5 marked sheep are left back in the shedding ring, the handler will go to the pen, (K) and with the dog drive the marked sheep into the pen and after closing the gate, the run is completed.

The shepherds crook made by Emil Oomen
makes no ordinary sticks, but the most imaginable ones with a deep gloss.
Shining Gems
All of Emil’s shepherds crook are different. There are sticks with a swirl of red 'cheeks' on it, and one has a contrasting white piping in the middle, yet another has sides that reflect the light in all directions. In the past, shepherding was usually practiced in rough areas, often on mountain slopes, in wetlands and peat lands. So it regularly happened that the shepherd lost a sheep because it was stuck in the bog or fell into a crevice or ravine of a mountain. Someone then came up with the idea of a tool with which the shepherd could save his sheep. A shepherds crook consists of a straight stick and a round curved handle at the upper end. Because of this curvature of the rod, a shepherd could catch his sheep at leg or neck and lift it up or pull it out of the swamp. In my country (the Netherlands) there are no mountain ravines or rifts, but peat lands that are grazed by sheep. In these peat bog where a sheep or lamb can disappear in a waterhole, the shepherd can rescue the sheep from certain death by using his shepherds crook.
26
You can visit Emil at this 30th. Continental Championship
There is difference between working sticks and show sticks. A competitor in a sheepdog trial would use a beautifully crafted show stick - like the hobby shepherds are using. The professional shepherds usually use the working sticks, but often use show sticks when they are running in sheepdog trials. As a hobby shepherd I was inspired by those show sticks and therefore have tried making them. In other countries, the handle also can be made of horn. Since it is forbidden in the Netherlands to make handles out of the rams’ horn (animal parts) I make the handles of various types of wood, and for the stick I use hazel wood because it is flexible and remains. By using different types of wood the shepherds crook becomes just a gem for the eye.
