At the Interface between International Development, Peace Work and Universities – an Organization for Developing Methods for Participative Projects

Idea — CAMEO develops tools for the realization of participative projects in international cooperation settings. Its focus is on audio-visual documentation media as tools for collective problem-solving processes involving social actors. Context — In cooperation with Helvetas, CAMEO tests the application of a media training and technology packages with various groups in Mozambique. The different facets of the project were presented at the International Geneva Forum on Social Change 2012 (GFSC). Content — CAMEO has laid the foundation for far-reaching and extensive development and aims at establishing itself as a reliable service provider in international development cooperation. Working as the interface between universities and organizations for international cooperation such as Helvetas, InnovaBridge Foundation or ABC Ulawazi, CAMEO explores and develops methods for designing participative processes. As research partners in the role of laboratories, the universities develop sustainable solutions which CAMEO realizes then in different environments and cultures as pilot projects. For instance “RecAndShare”, a multi-media solution developed by HyperWerk Institute, was further developed and optimized by CAMEO.

In June 2012, a project was launched on behalf of Helvetas in Mozambique, which employs CAMEO’s new approach to audio-visual documentation. By using this approach, the effects of a humanitarian project on native target groups can be recorded in a unique way. Another part of the CAMEO diploma project is concerned with networking, crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, and online marketing via social media. Product — CAMEO facilitates the formation of research partnerships and supports interactions in the areas of international development cooperation and transformation of social and political conflicts. The focus is on creating intercultural and cross-disciplinary relationships for sustainable development through the innovative use of resources and innovative process design. Upstream — CAMEO enables social groups to document and spread their own culture. This supports the exchange with other communities and contributes to strengthening the

notion of shaping globalization by means of a multilateral approach (Global Governance). At the same time, through the permanent use of documentation media, the preservation of cultural diversity is supported.
