Annual Report 2017-2018

From the Head of School Dear Hyla Families and Friends, This booklet continues the story of the ongoing generosity that wraps around this community. We call this an “annual report,” but really those are such dry words for the remarkable heart, devotion, and service captured here. We are so proud to share herein a financial snapshot of last year, the 2017 – 2018 school year, and show you what your gifts make possible at Hyla. The numbers show that Hyla is financially strong and that is thanks to you and your generosity. While the numbers are important, we are also proud to share the very human stories behind those numbers. Behind every gift we receive there is a wonderful “why.” For some it’s about appreciation, for others it’s about investment. For some it’s about doing their part, for others it’s about making a difference. The “why” is deeply personal. It carries our hopes for the children here and our shared sense of purpose. Whatever your “why,” I hope you see it reflected back at you in these pages, along with our boundless appreciation. The whole point of this booklet is to say “thank you” for the giving that keeps Hyla strong. And at Hyla, we all give. This past year Hyla received gifts from teachers, parents, board members, alumni parents, and also former students. Through One Call for All we received gifts from people we don’t even know, but who know about our good work. Each and every gift is a statement of trust and confidence in our work with children – they are the ultimate “why” behind every gift, every volunteer hour, and every tuition penny. They are the reason for everything we do at Hyla. They are the heart of our school. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your generosity, your unique “why,” and the spark you bring to Hyla. With warmth and gratitude,

Suzanne

From the Board President Dear Hyla Families and Friends, The spirit of generosity at Hyla is so strong you can feel it! You felt it buzz on auction night during the historic Paddle Call when the room raised $97,800. You felt it when you opened the email announcing that Hyla received a $1M gift to establish a Financial Aid endowment called the Marjorie Moore Fund. You felt it in the barn at the Barn Party when we all raised a glass on a dark October night to kick-off the Annual Fund. If you visit campus today, you can more than feel that generous spirit. You can hear it in the sounds of construction. You can see it in the three new classrooms, new library, landscaping, and red building renovations. You can experience it during professional development in-service sessions with teachers. It’s flowing through the new fiber-optic network into each classroom. Your generosity is everywhere at Hyla. And it’s with the Hyla Board of Trustees, too. The incredible generosity of this community is a statement of trust in our program, our leadership, and our strategic growth. Inspired by and equipped with the dollars you entrust to us, we continue to invest in the school we all love. Your gifts enable important strategic decisions at the board level – and the evidence of those decisions is all over campus. On behalf of the entire board of trustees, thank you for every dollar you give and every minute you volunteer for Hyla. It is a thrilling time for the school and we are so glad you are a part of it. With gratitude,

Karen

Thank You, Parent Volunteers MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

We are happy to share that parent volunteering at Hyla is strong and vibrant. Volunteering continues to be a place where parents get to know each other and build friendships that last into the high school and college years. With every project, parents bring their unique talents to Hyla and enrich our school with their individuality. Best of all, Hyla parents model service and community for our students.

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” ~ Author Unknown

Thank you to the following volunteers for your leadership, time, talent, and humor.

From teachers tapping toes to Footloose in the Barn for our first ever video invite, to Cooper’s debut as Bruce Springsteen for the auction night video, and everything in-between…. it was quite a night for Hyla! The 2018 auction was a fantastic success and for the third year in a row we set a new school record. We raised $148,018, including $97,800 in the paddle call. The auction could not happen without the generosity of our parents, teachers, and local community. Thank you all for supporting the auction in so many ways – donations, desserts, tickets, raising your paddles, helping us set up, photography, and so much more. It was an incredible night for the entire Hyla community and we are full of gratitude. AUCTION VOLUNTEER TEAM

Keep Calm and Volunteer

Thanks to Sandy O’Hare, there were volunteer recruitment posters with this cheerful message: keep calm and volunteer. Everywhere you looked during this event, you saw Hyla parents helping out, whether twirling batons at the crosswalk, jamming on the stage, helping kids play games, or welcoming guests at the front booth. Shelter on the Sports Field

“The Eagle Project is about a scout conceiving, organizing, and managing a project, and Peter brought together a lot of talented adults and then quite a few young people into this project. It was a lot of heavy lifting done mainly by the kids.”

Thanks to Peter Connolly, Hyla class of 2016, and his Eagle Project, Hyla now has a beautiful covered structure on the sports field. Just as Peter envisioned, the structure is perfect for storing clothing and bags during sports events and PE equipment all throughout the year. Here Peter shares his goals for the project, as well as his gratitude to those who helped, and the lessons he learned along the way.

How did you decide this would be your Eagle Project?

The goal of the project is to do something that will benefit a non-scouting organization. Hyla was the perfect candidate for me because of how great my time was there and it was even better because I’d had this project idea since 6th grade. From the beginning of my time at Hyla, whenever we went to PE, everyone just threw their extra layers and water bottles on the ground. This was something I’d noticed and figured it would be great to have somewhere to put all those things. Conveniently, I happened to have my Eagle Project come down the line and there was the solution.

Peter’s mom, Marlene

“It was an easy choice to do a project for Hyla. Hyla did so much for me, I never will be able to repay it in full.”

Peter Connolly

Now that it’s complete, what was most meaningful to you about this project?

What was special to me was definitely the learning process. It’s more than just the project management, but also the woodworking and construction skills. It was an amazing discovery process to see how much I didn’t know about something that’s always been an interest of mine. I worked with a wide variety of people, all of whom had a very deep level of knowledge and skill at what they do. To witness how they worked and how they exercised this knowledge was incredible to be a part of and I hope to have more experiences like it in the future.

Looking back, what lessons stand out?

A large section of the paperwork I had to complete for the Eagle Scout project was focused on reflections and takeaways. I definitely learned a lot about the importance of the details. As funny as it sounds, learning how to email better was a skill I had to work on. Being able to write the quantity of emails to so many different people about so many different things was a great learning opportunity. I also learned a lot about coordinating across schedules. The project took a lot of help from volunteers–all of whom had very busy lives–and making sure to find dates that worked for the maximum number of people was quite hard even in the summer. I learned a lot about managing small costs. When you’re doing a project of this size, it’s easy to lose track of little expenses and their receipts. Just realizing you have the wrong type of nail could easily result in needing to send someone to get the right one, determining who that will be, keeping the receipt of the new purchase, and returning the original nails which you have to still have the receipt for.

Special thanks to….

Stephen Prentice for his instrumental support, guidance, patience, and time, as well as Paul Webber, Bill Glasby (Scoutmaster), Dan Bacon, Todd Osborn, David Kotz, Haig Townsend, and Kevin Greene; all the Hyla Alumni who helped build this project; ProBuild for generous discounts on materials for this and many other Eagle Scout projects!

$30,000 Anonymous Gift

ENHANCES CLASSROOMS, PLAY, TEAM BUILDING AND TECHNOLOGY AT HYLA We are tremendously thankful to the anonymous donors who gifted $30,000 to Hyla and for the important work your generosity made possible for Hyla. All gifts made to Hyla are special because they carry both the donor’s intentions (ideas about how they want their gift to be used) and also the donor’s personal values (the very reasons why they give and the legacy they hope to leave). Gifts also help the school make meaningful progress on strategic needs and plans. We are excited to share the end result of a fun and collaborative process that brings our donors’ wishes to life while providing for school need with these wonderful additions to our campus, curriculum, and community. Here are the areas of impact chosen by the donors and the new additions to Hyla:

CLASSROOM SPACES: new furniture for Human Relations

Soft gathering spaces have long been essential to how the Human Relations curriculum works. For many years, Hyla has gratefully received donations of comfy couches from many families. What this anonymous gift allowed us to do was to purchase an entire matching

seating set that is comfortable, easy to clean, made for middle school-sized people, and flexible. Because the set is modular, it is lightweight and easy to move around. Being able to easily reconfigure seating arrangements is vital to the broad variety of activities that happen in Human Relations, from Council, to small group discussions, to bigger activities that require more open floor space. STUDENT FUN: Ping Pong Bursts of laughter and cheering are common during breaks and lunches as students enjoy Gaga Ball, games on the sports court, and the Cargo Net. Now Hyla students will have another fun way to burn off energy with an outdoor ping pong table. We look forward to lively tournaments! TECHNOLOGY: new Robotics kits Hands-on technology that allows students to design, build and program their own robots is both a fun and immersive way to practice critical collaboration skills like communication in groups, creative problem solving, and project planning. The addition of new Lego Mindstorm kits will support our cross-curricular STEM units, including Electives. Hyla Middle School | Annual Report 2017-18 | Page 9

TEAM BUILDING: Interactive elements along the new trail

The new trail built last year by students and David Maron during an Elective will be enhanced with new features like low ropes and signs with reflection questions. The trail is already a beautiful space that connects Hyla students to the environment, and now it will also be a place for team building activities and focused conversational walks to support Human Relations, PE, retreats, and even the 6th grade overnight.

“At its best,

education meets the needs of each individual student. We felt Hyla was a great fit for our student and we chose to donate to help ensure Hyla continues to have the resources to meet the needs of a diverse student body.” ~ Anonymous Donors

With joy and excitement for these additions to our school, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the anonymous donors who made this possible. We are honored by the trust and confidence you have placed in Hyla with this gift and grateful for the active engagement your gifts make possible for all Hyla students — now and many years into the future.

8th Grade Legacy Gift of 2018

A GAZEBO!

Hyla’s Class of 2018 wanted to take another step toward a long-standing dream of Hyla students both past and present: outdoor classes in all types of weather. The gazebo idea originated with students in Class Meetings, during which students established self-governing rules and also chose projects and initiatives to take on collectively. The 2018 class chose the gazebo project because they believe that a permanent fixture will make it easier to conduct classes outside, and gather the whole class to eat lunch together in all weather. The new gazebo will also work perfectly with the beautiful wooden benches built by Kris Van Gieson several years ago. Kimberley Gorman Trick, our Global Education teacher, is currently in conversation with interested parents about the construction timeline and location. Thank you, Hyla Class of 2018 families, for your $4,125 contribution to the planned gazebo. Your legacy is a breath of fresh air! Hyla Middle School | Annual Report 2017-18 | Page 10

Why I Give The Connolly Family

The Annual Fund is our opportunity to acknowledge the countless ways we are thankful for our family’s Hyla experience. The gifts of a Hyla education are timeless, as each graduate carries them forward for a lifetime. The community that Hyla inspires is boundless, as each member shares what they’ve learned. Our boys are now thriving through high school and college, and we see the fruits now from seeds planted years back in the classrooms, on the cargo net, during Expanded Horizons, and the many other experiences Hyla offered. The teachers inspired, guided, and challenged them. The campus nurtured their growth. Our continued giving is simply a gesture of our continuing gratitude.

Jenny and John Lange

Hyla is a place that has brought our kids so much joy. The deep connection they feel to this place, their teachers, and the other students means we have happy kids who simply love their middle school. As parents, we give to celebrate that joy! Knowing that tuition doesn’t cover the full cost of a Hyla education, we also want to do our part to bridge the gap so that tuition stays at an affordable level. Supporting the Annual Fund means that more families can have a chance to experience this kind of school community.

Cortney and Sam George

We are just starting our third year at Hyla and we continue to be amazed at the immense thoughtfulness and genuine caring this school provides for our middle school student. As we’ve come to realize, the changes that happen emotionally, mentally and physically from 6-8th grade are astounding, and the administration and teachers at Hyla are so in tune with what kids at this special age really need: they need to feel seen and heard and encouraged and pushed just hard enough to grow into independent learners and citizens of our community. Hyla does an amazing job with all of the above and we give to support this asset to the Bainbridge Island Community. Hyla Middle School | Annual Report 2017-18 | Page 14

Why I Give Chelsea and Peter Vessenes

Hyla has been a gift to our whole family. The kids have thrived, each in their own way, having the chance to explore and be creative and try new things. Middle school at Hyla has been an amazing combination of cozy and totally out of the box. And they love their relationships with their teachers -- in the classroom, on hiking trips, on the ferry to Seattle, in the library, over a cup of tea or a paintbrush. Even the parents feel lucky to be there, as we have a lot to learn about raising kids and are so grateful for the support and advice of teachers, staff and other parents. It’s an honor to support Hyla.

Jennifer Haase

As a parent and a long-time teacher, Hyla is a second home for me and for my kids. This is the case for so many of our students! Our students’ connection to Hyla-- even after they’ve graduated!-- is validation that we truly recognize this special age. These are just some of the reasons that I give. For me, giving to the Annual Fund symbolizes more than the proverbial drop in the bucket, but my belief that everything I do for Hyla, from teaching kids in the classroom to saying hello in the grocery store to giving to the annual fund, creates a ripple effect... ripples that have the potential to allow this place to thrive long after my kids are grown and I’m retired.
