25 YEARS: 1987–2012 TAKING THE PLUNGE It was 25 years ago that I made a decision to follow my passion and found a company dedicated to manufacturing and marketing aquatic health and fitness products. The year was 1987. Swimming was second only to jogging as the nation’s most popular fitness activity.
The word HYDRO-FIT was first used in 1986 to describe a unique new deep-water exercise class taught by Craig Stuart at Sheldon Pool in Eugene, Oregon.
Jane Fonda had recently brought aerobic exercise to the forefront of our consciousness and into our living rooms. Aquatic exercise—the notion that groups of people would perform aerobic exercise to music in the water was emerging and little known. We’ve come a long way since then. Aquatic exercise is now mainstream and acknowledged as a viable and effective method of physical conditioning, training and rehabilitation. Each day millions of people participate in an ever-growing variety of aquatic-based health and fitness programs.
Like many great companies, HYDRO-FIT started in a garage, where Hand Buoys were assembled by hand, here by Craig Stuart and staff.

The first Hand Buoy was assembled from discarded and worn out swim floats found in a storage closet at a community swimming pool. The original design became a commercial success in 1988 and endured with only minor changes until a redesign with improved features (cushioned hand grips and custom end caps) was introduced in 2004.

By the mid-1990s runners throughout the country were discovering the benefits of deep water running for cross training and rehabilitation.
