KEEP A DRINK IN HAND

If you’re prone to absent-minded snacking, grab a non-calorific drink and keep it in your dominant hand so it will be harder to eat finger food. Better yet – bring a clutch, like Bella Hadid, so that both of your hands are full!

ou started summer with the best intentions, promising this will be the year you’ll stick to your diet game. Then come party invites, Christmas dinners – and of course, New Year’s celebrations. Studies show that Australians gain between 0.8 and 1.5kg on average at this time of year. But while it wouldn’t be the holiday season without a few treats, a little bit of smart and careful planning will mean there’s no reason you can’t have your cake and eat it, too!

THINK POSITIVE THOUGHTS

What you tell yourself can have a big effect, according to dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner. A few positive words – such as, ‘I’m strong and healthy,’ or ‘I’m hot and I’m going to stay that way’ – will make it easier to crush temptation. Take a tip from Katherine Heigl, who started each day with a positive mantra to help shed her baby weight.

SPOIL YOUR APPETITE

Fill up on something nourishing and healthy beforehand, and you’ll be far less likely to binge on party food, says dietitian Leslie Boncie. Eat something with a good balance of carbohydrates and protein (think Greek yoghurt with fresh berries) about an hour before you leave the house and you won’t even look at the party pies, sausage rolls or chips. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water – before and during the bash.
