Abstract BMX, an abbreviation for bicycle motocross or bike motocross, is a cycle sport performed on BMX bikes, either in competitive BMX racing or freestyle BMX, or else in general on-road & off-road recreation.

BMX has been growing in India over the years with numerous riders now practising the BMX in different formats. The Infrastructure for BMX is not extensive in India; In fact, the majority of the people consider BMX as a nuisance, The country being filled with talented people who are interested in various sports, but we encourage few sports only. As a result India has been left out from such extreme sports in spite of having passionate people.

As BMX needs dedicated space to practice, we as a country lack to provide such infrastructure, If riders makeshifts and practice in public urban places—like public parks and roads/pedestrian, people file complaints against riders—resulting to which cops inflate or damage their expensive bikes or seize them.

BMX racing took off in California, inspired by motocross. It fast became popular and made its Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Games. Prior to the upcoming 2021 Summer Olympics, all events were speed races, but the 2021 programme will feature BMX freestyle for the first time. and in India, we do have really passionate riders even though the odds are not favouring them.

THE PROPOSAL BMX is an expensive sport—the bike itself costs more than 1 lakh rupees, and 50k annual miscellaneous expenses.

Through this thesis, I want to provide riders who belong to unfortunate financial

background—the opportunity to get fund by making the place as happening as possible alongside generating the tourist attraction, So people can come and enjoy adrenaline of this extreme sport. and design will Integrate the arena with other urban spaces to make the place more diverse. In house training centres for all categories of BMX i.e Pump Track, Flat land. and other indispensable infrastructure

THE NEED PROPOSAL • To give recognition to BMX and diverse the format of cycling sport in India.

• To nurture our spearheads biologically and Financially.

• To fabricate the new paradigm and opportunities among the young sportspeople and upcoming generation.

• To increase the chances of winning the Gold and Pride in an international event.

• To develop a system for managing the sport.

• To improve urban infrastructure and make it more diverse and vibrant.

AIM : The thesis proposes the upliftment of BMX in India and creating an ecosystem through which current and upcoming generations make difference on an International level efficiently. Alongside the project also aims to benefits the city by attracting explorers and tourist all around the world.

OBJECTIVES : • To understand BMX and existing national and International controlling and regulatory bodies.

• Comprehend other sports infrastructure and figure out the common denominators.

• Exploration in terms of complex human interventions, spatial configuration,

transitional spaces,

landscape, and architectural form.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS : The dissertation focuses on the surface understanding of BMX sport, but more focus on measures of uplifting the sport: Socially, Financially, and Architecturally. Components like sports politics, process and evolution of different events are not part of this dissertation.

A detailed study Mechanical systems and project estimation is not concern of this dissertation.

METHODOLOGY The project begins with the primary significance of the BMX sport including major historical highlights and the potential of Indian BMX riders. Then the study proceeds with a critical notion from which the idea of the dissertation on BMX Arena in Ahmedabad was triggered. To process the thesis further by following the trail with case studies and resolving overlapping boundaries, inferences, and specifications. With absolute data mining and architectural research; the project excels towards the design phase. In which all the literature, graphics, sketches, parti diagrams, etc; formulates in the architectural built form—which will be a very enticing and well-crafted BMX arena!

In 1972 motorbikes racing d o c u m e n t a r y “ON ANY SUNDAY” is always credited with inspiring the moment of BMX nationally in the USA ; Its opening scene where a couple of kids rides their string rays bicycle offroad. Then this makeshift turns out real sport.

Middle of the decade (1970 to 1980) this sports pull of Huge mass of people into this sport; due to this reason, manufacturers began building Specialized bikes for this extreme sport.

National Bicycle League (NBL) founded in 1974 by George E. Essar American Bicycle Association (ABA) was formed in 1977 for growing sport.

International BMX Federation (IBF) was founded in 1981 and First World BMX Championship Held in 1982 Union Cyclist international (UCI) integration in 1993 International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2003 recognized the BMX as full medal sport.

DIALOGUES WITH PRO BMX RIDERS

Athlete Prateek Bhasin is Chandigarh-based Pro BMX street rider, He is 29 years old, and doing BMX since around 13 years!

Is BMX is still new for Indian people?

People actually conscious of other cycling formats, and less aware of BMX. BMX requires a strong mind-set because it is an action sport since tricks on the cycle are a technical thing and sometimes cause serious injuries. It also scares the people; Due to which fewer people are doing BMX. Where do we stand at BMX? If we compare our riders to European and American riders.

As European and American continents have developed nations; so their riders are more resourceful in terms of infrastructure, and other governing organizations. They also learn things from scratch like us. but their Journey has less friction just because of the resources they have.

Why we are not able to take our country’s name in BMX at an international level?

The thing is... recently the freestyle BMX is part of the 2020 Olympics; all the riders around the world push very hard to make this happen. We are also requesting the Cycling Federation of India to look upon, Recently the national event that happened in Karnataka where the ofcials of CFI came, Our BMX riders showcased their talent and remind them to take this game to an international level, So athletes can grow and build a carrier out of it.

From the research, I found out that other countries have dedicated BMX park for training and practice the sport, do we have such kind of place in India?

Yes, we have skate parks in India, But that is again not at all locations. In Chandigarh, we are trying to grow the sport as well. Hopefully, we are building a skate park here in Chandigarh this year and going to start weekend training sessions for BMX. What kind of resources you require to take the BMX to the next level professionally. Like is there something that you need but you don't have it right now?

Yes, you just press the painful button of the game… Like the resource we struggle for the most is ramps! like in skate park also… we require separate areas to perform jumps to go 10' to 20' high, then we require the place for a soft landing, basically form pit area to avoid injuries. and we also need the resin ramps which saves us from the hard impact on knees and wrist while we land; when we crash while doing tricks basically resin sheet has less friction due to which we slip off from the surface without ripping off the skin.

How many riders do we have in India?

Let me assume here… we have 100 riders from Shillong, Chandigarh has 110 riders Jaipur has a couple of riders then we have 80 to 100 riders in Hyderabad. A couple of riders from Kerala rounding up the gures from all over India we have around 300 to 400 riders…

What is the intensity of the crowd in any BMX event in India?

The crowd intensity is moderate, Also depends on organizers like how they are marketing the event.

Not only the general public comes to the BMX event; but also other cycling professionals come to enjoy the event and also the networking and relations between two streams of riders improve in these sorts of events.

What is the growth of BMX in India till now, and how it is growing day by day?

See, If we talk about 3 to 4 years back that time; fewer people doing BMX. And there were not such skate parks and other platforms. Now we have skate parks like; Mumbai has two skate parks and one bike park and that helps riders to grow the BMX. Right now the everything is going ne but still, the one thing that is missing is that to give an athlete a proper arena for performing at an extreme level.

The athlete is someone who builds the game if we build him/her So then they'll able to perform and push the boundaries and earn the medals for the country…

We might need to hire International coaches as well; so that'll fulll the requirement. Statistically, we have grown 30% till now; next year It'll be 35% to 40% the pace is slow but It depends on governing body also; they play major role in sports until and unless private body funds.

Athlete Hamza khan is Hyderabad-based Pro BMX rider, He is 27 years old, and doing BMX since around 6 years!

What is the current state of BMX in India?

The current state of BMX in India; It's a growing sport and it came into the mainstream very recently even the BMX freestyle included in the Olympics. Earlier Olympic has always BMX racing event, but no Indian took part till now. The Cycling Federation of India started taking it more seriously. We have two riders from India who are competing and representing the country on international events, Even I have been involved and built the track in Hyderabad (Wallride park) and building another track at greater Noida; so the sport expand and more people involve in the sport.

What is the growth pace of BMX in India?

The pace of growth has definitely increased after some infrastructure came in, Earlier it was a pretty minimal level, and people come to know about sport themselves. Now the children are also involved in this sport, For instance, in my park; we have kids range of 4 years old so their chances of competing internationally increase if they are getting involved from now. One of the kid who we have at the park is training to compete in Olympics also.

Instead of having potential Pro riders, Is there any deciency in our governing system due to which we lack behind compare to other overseas riders?

The thing is CFI has limited funds and with those funds, they do what they are educated about. Like they fund well to push road cycling, track cycling, and mountain biking events. Recently they are looking upon BMX events also; it's just a matter of them being educated and need of more young people to be a part of CFI; So BMX grows and expands in India more efficiently.

From which material it is preferable to build the track? (asphalt / concrete /any other)?

Asphalt is preferable; because it is less dense than concrete, what happens with concrete is that rider needs to land perfectly; If he/she doesn’t then he/she easily loses balance and slips off on the track. In asphalt, the rider has much more control over the bike, for instance, anybody loses the balance on the asphalt track they ride off and continues instead of slip off. and on dense material, riders get much more hurt.

CASE STUDY: THE GROWTH OF KABADDI The purpose of studying the Kabaddi is to understand how the game as recreational or entertainment activity evolve and expand as a professional sport in past years. And what is the role of architecture for growing the sport.

For long haul Kabaddi was considered to be a game played in the rural areas of our country, with not much fascination seen in the game by those living in cities. Not even t to be a part of the Olympics, India had to struggle hard to keep it alive in the Asian Games, right since it was introduced in 1990.

After year 2000 the game got popular in cities as well people start playing and enjoy as spectators.

Sports governing body plays an important role promoting the sports across political boundaries, dening rules, organising sports championships and hunt the really good talents who represents nation in an international events.

HOW ARCHITECTURE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR GROWING THE SPORT Sports events can organise on any open ground. but architecture provide “experience” to the spectators as well as athlete. It also attracts potent sponsors and media — Due to which sports grows economically, socially, and geographically.

CASE STUDY : BMX ROCKSTAR BIKE PARK

Architect : bzd Master plan : OJB lab Area : The site located at ood plains in North of Houston. The architecture and integrated landscape uplifts the user experience and recreate them to its fullest.

The architecture around BMX harness the love for speed as well as for extreme creative motion. A modest material pallet and simple design forms designed in such a way that they doesn’t overpower the spectators.

PLANNING OF BMX TRACK Factors to Consider The Field of Play • The Start Hill, including the starting gate and access stairs or ramp.

• The BMX Track, which includes the riding surface of the track, as well as the banking formed by the mounds of soil along its outside edges and behind the corners.

• The Ineld - the area between the straights and around the outside edges of the BMX track, up to and including the boundary fence.

• The Finish Area, including the nish line and the braking area following it.

Location The form and layout of a BMX track depends on the shape and size of the land on which it will be built.

The complete Field of Play, designed in accordance with the UCI BMX Track Guide, must t within the space available.

Grade The land on which a BMX track is built must be generally at, or graded to be at.

Requirement For newly built tracks, the maximum allowable difference in elevation between the nish line and the bottom of the start hill is 2m. As pictured below, the track should drop as evenly as possible throughout its length.

Grading

Wind The track should be aligned with the prevailing winds in the area so that riders experience either a headwind or a tail wind. Generally, it is preferred that the riders should experience a tailwind when on the rst straight.If strong or unpredictable winds are normal in the area where a new track is being considered, then it is wise to nd a more sheltered location, or to choose a design that minimises the effect of wind on the riders.

Water Drainage In this respect, building a BMX track is not much different than building a house – good water drainage is critical. It is a mistake to build a track without drainage. It is also wise to avoid building a track in low areas where water may collect.

To achieve a good all-weather surface, a variety of materials set down in layers are recommended in order to give a hard-wearing, all weather surface that is ride able in wet weather as well as dry weather.

Straights 1. Base material: This should be built in 300mm layers. Clay based, dry, non-organic material, good compaction levels.

2. Sub-base material: Laid to the depth of 100-150mm - type 1 stone 25-40mm in size, scalpings, crushed concrete, stone based which compacts well to give a sealed surface.

3. Surface material: A limestone or granite crushed stone surface. This is laid to the depth of 100mm.

Material size can range from 10mm to dust or 6mm to dust. In drier climates, a 4mm to dust size can be used. Generally the larger the size the better it handles wet weather. The top layer should compact to a sealed hard surface. Water may be required to get it to the desired nish

Corners 1. Base material, as above 2. Sub-base material, as above, although a larger sized aggregate can be used.

3. Asphalt in 2 layers. A 32mm sized binding course (laid to the depth of 75mm) which is then covered by a second layer of 6mm wearing course tarmac (laid to the depth of 50mm). The surface layer should be well sealed so that the stones within the tarmac are unlikely to come loose as the surface wears.

Photo 19 : Example of a corner paved with asphalt. Notice how the pathway on top of the corner is also capped with asphalt. This stabilises the edge of the corner and prevents crumbling; it also keeps rain from penetrating behind the asphalt.

Photo 20 : Example of a cement corner that was brushed to ensure a good level of traction. The only problem is that the top edge of the corner wasn’t capped and was left quite sharp; this should be avoided. Sandbags had to be used to cover the edge to make it safe.

Photo 21 :Gently sloped edges covered with grass prevent erosion, and reduce the risk of injury in case a rider is ejected from the track.

Photo 22 : Special high-grip paint used on the Rio 2016 BMX Track. The white Rio 2016 logo is painted using the same type of paint so that traction is consistent throughout. The grip provided was better than that of asphalt. The paint was applied on top of a concrete surface.

SITE ANALYSIS The site is situated on the Sabarmati river in the heart of Ahmedabad city in India. Ahmedabad is located on the banks of the Sabarmati river in the northern part of Gujarat. The average elevation is 53m.

The city is located in a sandy and dry area, the Sabarmati river bifurcates the city into two parts (i.e East and West segment), connected by ve bridges, The site is located at east Segment of Sabarmati river along river-front; between Sardar bridge and Ellis bridge.

The site also attach with Jamalpur which is predominantly dense with residential builtups. Jamalpur is also a treasure trove of heritage architectural structures.

Site Area : 57,373 Mt sq. (14.17 acre) Total Road width : 15M Site features : There is no tree on site (As show in Photos), But has amazing view of Sabarmati river.

Topography : The site is almost at without any proles.

CONCEPTUAL - URBAN BMX PARK

The concept begin with the question how to make bmx familiar between the people. More the awareness = More possibility of people participation.

And to bring people —there has to be a purpose

Strategy

BMX park centered around different activities —such as walking, cycling, tness area, kids play area, etc.

The idea is to connect the site in such a way that the users also experience river view and have visual connectivity with the BMX training area. And the path should undulate which adds a bit more strain in training.

Photo 19 : Example of a corner paved with asphalt. Notice how the pathway on top of the corner is also capped with asphalt. This stabilises the edge of the corner and prevents crumbling; it also keeps rain from penetrating behind the asphalt.

Photo 20 : Example of a cement corner that was brushed to ensure a good level of traction. The only problem is that the top edge of the corner wasn’t capped and was left quite sharp; this should be avoided. Sandbags had to be used to cover the edge to make it safe.

Photo 21 : Special high-grip paint used on the Rio 2016 BMX Track. The white Rio 2016 logo is painted using the same type of paint so that traction is consistent throughout. The grip provided was better than that of asphalt. The paint was applied on top of a concrete.
