What are the different types of prevention?

Primary Prevention—intervening before health effects occur.

• Secondary Prevention—screening to identify diseases in the earliest stages.

• Tertiary Prevention—managing disease post diagnosis to slow or stop.

Why is prevention important?

Preventive care can drastically increase your lifespan because it allows you to catch things early and treat them much easier.

1. Stop Smoking

2. Be More Active

3. Practice Good Nutrition

4. Limit Alcohol Intake

5. Watch Your Weight

6. Take part in screenings, such as mammograms

Get to and stay at a healthy weight

Both increased body weight and weight gain as an adult are linked with a higher risk of breast cancer after menopause. It is important that you stay at a healthy weight throughout your life and avoid excess weight gain by balancing your food intake with physical activity.

Be physically active

It is so important to get regular physical activity. Moderate to vigorous physical activity is exercise that makes you sweat and your heart beat faster. It includes walking, swimming, cycling, or running. A growing body of research suggests that doing any kind of activity to avoid too much sitting can help lower cancer risk.

Avoid or limit alcohol

Alcohol increases risk of breast cancer. Even drinking small amounts of alcohol has been linked with an increase in risk. It is best not to drink alcohol at all. For women who do drink, they should have no more than 1 alcoholic drink a day. A drink is 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits (hard liquor).

Good Nutrition

Studies have suggested that a diet that is high in vegetables, fruit and calcium-rich dairy products, but low in red and processed meats, might help lower the risk of breast cancer. A diet low in fat, processed and red meat, and sugary drinks, but high in fruits and vegetables can have many health benefits, including lowering the risk of some other types of cancer.

hurley news
12 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER
Cancer prevention is the practice of taking active measures to decrease the incidence of cancer and mortality. The practice of prevention is dependent upon both individual efforts to improve lifestyle and seek preventive screening.

Breast Cancer Screenings

Since 2007, breast cancer death rates have been steady in women younger than 50 but have continued to decrease in older women. These decreases are believed to be the result of finding breast cancer earlier through screening and increased awareness, as well as better treatments.

Recommendations for Women

• Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms (x-rays of the breast) if they wish to do so.

• According to the American Cancer Society, women 45-54 should get mammograms once a year; Women 55 and older can get mammograms every other year, or they can continue yearly mammograms.

Recommendations for Men

• 18 to 25 is the recommended age for initial imaging test.

• For men younger than 25 years, diagnostic ultrasound is recommended.

• For men 25 years of age or older presenting with a palpable abnormality, bilateral diagnostic mammography.

"Breast cancer is the number one female cancer in the United States. In fact, 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. The great news is that when breast cancer is detected early and still in the localized stage, the five year survival rate is 99%. A woman's best defense against breast cancer involves performing regular self exams, regular clinical exams, adhering to screening guidelines, and understanding family history and seeking counsel to determine risk."

Hurley Wellness celebrates employees who are passionate about health and wellness, whether that means the individuals have achieved or are working toward a personal, mental or physical goal or that they foster a culture of wellness. Hurley’s Wellness Hero of the Quarter, Amesha Allen, Nursing Assistant, embodies all aspects of the award, as she works toward her own goals and motivates those around her.

Amesha has been with Hurley for nine years. She began her career in 2015 on 9East as a Nursing Assistant and continues to serve patients currently on 4East. She finds that she does everything for the patient from bathing to vitals, even at times providing grief counseling. Amesha has a big heart when it comes to the patients taking her position here at Hurley very seriously.

Amesha has also taken this stance with wellness. “I started my wellness journey focusing somewhat on weight loss with my two sons during COVID.” She smiles proudly when she notes that both have graduated and are now in college. “I enjoyed the fact that they enjoyed doing activities with me. Seeing them enjoy the activities was my inspiration.”

Walking is Amesha’s favorite activity. She walks not only at home, her route begins at Kettering and goes to UofM-Flint, and also walks around the Hurley campus. “Walking is like a form of meditation to me, and I feel a great deal better being active.”

AMESHA ALLEN

Amesha notes that she did walk with others in her community but has set her own goals. “If others do not participate, you should still continue your own wellness activities. While it is important to commit to others, you should first commit to yourself.” In addition to walking, Amesha enjoys swimming.

While Amesha is humble about the idea of being the wellness hero, she has been noticed for these habits and lifestyle choice. One nomination forms states, “Amesha has worked very hard toward her weight loss goal by exercising daily, eating healthy and changing her lifestyle to remain healthy and fit. I have witnessed her transition by seeing her weight loss and how she has dedicated her life to a healthier lifestyle. She has remained consistent and focused and that is what inspires me about her.”

Amesha was extremely happy to be nominated for the Quarterly Wellness Hero and appreciated the recognition. “It can be difficult giving one another recognition in your day-to-day work environment but it is extremely important. Receiving this recognition means a great deal to me.” Amesha will continue to be diligent in her wellness goals and notes that it is possible for everyone to participate in their own goals. “It has been a long journey but consistency is the key to achieving your goals.”

In recognition of her dedication to wellness, Amesha received a Hurley Hero medal, a voucher for a Hurley jacket, a free membership to the YMCA and a $20 gift certificate for a chair massage.

REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL

The continuing education requirements apply to every physician renewing a Michigan medical license who has been licensed in the 3-year period immediately preceding the application for renewal. The requirements apply whether or not the physician is actively engaged in the practice of medicine. No one, including medical school faculty and resident physicians, is exempt from this requirement.

Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the Board of Medicine, of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs.

A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of Medical Ethics.

A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of Pain and Symptom Management, and at least 1 of the 3 hours must include controlled substance prescribing

Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA)

Mandatory Training Standards

• LARA requires a one-time mandatory training in Opioids and Other Controlled Substances Awareness for prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances.

• LARA requires a one-time mandatory training in Identifying Victims of Human Trafficking.

• LARA requires a minimum of three hours, every 3-year renewal cycle, in Implicit Bias Training.*

*NEW - revised LARA general rules pertaining to Implicit Bias Training include:

1. Allowing asynchronous webinars or other recordings as acceptable modalities (no longer mandated to be live).

New DEA Training Requirement via the MATE Act

The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, part of the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, requires ALL new or renewing DEA-registered practitioners who prescribe schedule II, III, IV or V drugs to undergo a one-time, eight-hour training requirement incorporating education on the treatment and management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders.

Beginning June 27, 2023, practitioners must have completed the one-time training requirement before applying for a license for the first time or to have their license renewed.

Recently, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) issued guidance on how the MATE Act expands opportunities for practitioners to fulfill this new training requirement, including how current state-mandated training may count towards the required eight-hours of training.
