JANUARY 2024 Hurley Family, Starting a new year allows us a moment to reflect on the past and look optimistically into the future. As we reflect on 2023 for Hurley Medical Center, we can definitely recount many challenges, but it's also easy to recall the collaboration and teamwork that allowed us to easily identify many solutions. We all know healthcare is a team sport and that includes every part of the team...those at the bedside, those in support areas, those working off campus...everyone. It is this collective teamwork that makes all of the inner workings of our hospital function to serve thousands of patients. We are grateful for the patients who choose us in their time of need, and we are grateful for the many members of the Hurley family who consistently engage with their team to ensure the hospital is able to provide for those patients in need. In this day and age of continued hospital consolidation, independent hospitals like Hurley become more and more unique. It is this uniqueness that allows us to head into the new year with optimism. We know the challenges laid out before us, and we know that the Hurley team will continue to deliver on our mission of Clinical Excellence, Service to People better than any other hospital in our region because we continue to have an identity all our own. As health systems get bigger through one acquisition after another, we gain strength through our continued devotion and dedication to the patients who choose Hurley because they recognize our uniqueness and our attention to caring. Patients also recognize that we have just as much clinical capability as the big health systems and Hurley is easily accessible. This is our advantage. As we head into 2024, we can look forward to the continued support of each other as teammates. We can also look forward to meeting and exceeding the expectations of those patients we've cared for over the years, those families we've had the privilege of caring for generation after generation and welcoming new patients who choose Hurley for the first time, encouraging their continued loyalty through our unmatched care and attention. As we live out our mission of caring for this community and the region, we know 2024 will be a year in which we continue to make a difference in the lives of so many. On behalf of the Board of Managers and the Senior Leadership team, we wish each and every one of the Hurley family a healthy, prosperous and happy new year!

I AM MALALA Malala Yousafzai was only ten years old when the Taliban took control of her region. They said music was a crime. They said women weren't allowed to go to the market. They said girls couldn't go to school.

Raised in a once-peaceful area of Pakistan transformed by terrorism, Malala was taught to stand up for what she believes. So she fought for her right to be educated. And on October 9, 2012, she nearly lost her life for the cause: She was shot pointblank while riding the bus on her way home from school. No one expected her to survive. Malala's powerful story will open your eyes to another world and will make you believe in hope, truth, miracles and the possibility that one person—one young person—can inspire change in her community and beyond.

HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER

IMPLEMENTS ORACLE CLOUD

Hurley Medical Center is proud to announce the implementation of the cloud-based system, Oracle Cloud. There are many benefits to Oracle Cloud, including accessibility from anywhere, with any device; ability to downsize most or all hardware and software; higher performance and availability; quick application

deployment; instant business insights and business continuity; priceperformance and cost savings and most importantly, centralized data security. All Hurley employees will utilize this system, which is why it was so important that a thorough selection, testing and implementation process occur.

What are the benefits of going to a cloud-based system?

What is Hurley using Oracle Cloud for?

There are so many positives of having a cloudbased system. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is a platform of cloud services that enable us to build and run a wide range of applications in a highly-available, consistently high-performance environment. Oracle Cloud applications are designed for maximum security and reduced risk thanks to self-repairing systems on Oracle’s autonomous database.

8 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER

The Oracle Cloud system will be utilized at Hurley for Human Resources, Finance, Payroll, Supply Chain and Information Technology as noted below:

Human Resources: As an employee,

you will be able to utilize the system to manage your personal and professional information, benefits, career development and work life. As a manager, you will be able to manage your team, such as hiring and onboarding, performance and feedback, compensation and rewards and succession and talent management.

oracle cloud ensuring a successful “go live.”

Finance: Hurley employees will be able

to utilize this system for travel and expense reimbursement, AP service invoice processing and approval, AP check requests, general ledger account and registering suppliers. The hospital budgeting process will be the next step of implementation.

Payroll: Oracle Cloud allows employees to

access and manage their pay, payment methods, tax withholding (W-4), year-end documents (W-2) and pay slips.

Supply Chain: With Oracle Cloud, users are able to order inventory from the Hurley warehouse and non-inventory items from other vendors (such as: Grainger, Amazon or Paperworks). Oracle Cloud will also provide a better process for receiving and inventory management.

Information Technology: Oracle

Cloud will make the IT management of Finance, HR and Supply Chain workflows and technology much more efficient and agile going forward.

Implementation Process

It has been a long process identifying, testing and selecting a system that could best handle all the above. In actuality, the selection process began two years ago in the fall of 2021 where Hurley initially found its current system, Lawson, had become obsolete, requiring replacement. It was critical that this process be extremely thorough, as all Hurley employees will utilize it. The selection, testing and implementation process took a team effort with all four areas, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology and Supply Chain, working together to identify the best system. Oracle Cloud was selected and implementation began in March 2022. The Oracle team, working with a thirdparty consultant, Baker Tilly, began to build a streamlined process that included the implementation of best practices in hopes of

Each of these teams spent countless hours testing, validating and making certain that employee records were accurately reflected, that payroll was processed accurately and that inventory items were entered correctly in Oracle Cloud. This was not only hours in a regular work day but hours spent on weekends, late nights and holidays. There was an entire crew present on December 31 and January 1 when Hurley went live with Oracle Cloud. As with any major system change, there will be bumps along the way and the team has worked diligently to address any issues as they come up. Processing payroll was one of the top priorities and the first pay was successful. There are no words to express all the hard work, the obstacles that had to be overcome and the effort that has been spent over the past two years, continuing to this day. Oracle Cloud will provide many opportunities. We are just getting started. HURLEYMC.COM • JANUARY 2024 • 9

THANK YOU Thank you to all the people included in the process to assure that we met the Go-Live deadline. All have been invested from the very beginning. The Oracle teams are recognized for the work they have accomplished and are truly appreciated. "Thank you to the entire organization for the patience you have displayed. We recognize that change can be difficult and that no implementation comes without difficulties. The Oracle team has personally seen such a positive atmosphere of all employees coming together to work as a team. We extend a huge thank you to the entire organization." -SUMMER JENKINS "Similar to when Hurley selected the EPIC system, the decision to go with Oracle Cloud was based on its overall functionality and it being the highest rated ERP system. We continue to select the best of the best when it comes to systems supporting the organization on both the clinical and operational side." -KEITH PONIERS "We are excited to migrate to Oracle Cloud because it will enable us to leverage the latest technology and innovation to drive the hospital forward. We are confident that Oracle will contribute to Hurley's organizational mission." -NICK LECEA AND TRAVIS SENK

daisy award recipient

for extraordinary nurses

C H E L S E A F R AY, R N

Chelsea Fray, RN, is this month’s Daisy Award Honoree. The DAISY Award celebrates the extraordinary compassion a nurse shows to patients and their families. Chelsea was a Michigan native graduating from Kearsley High School. She moved on to Sarasota, Florida, graduating with a nursing degree from Keiser University and interning at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

14 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER

Chelsea’s sister was the draw to Hurley, as she was an ER RN and would always talk about how much she loved her “Hurley family” and being able to help the community as a nurse. Chelsea has now been here two years in Pediatrics. Pediatrics is her passion, as she has found her dream job working with the kiddos. Chelsea cares for little babies up to young adults and works hard to establish a caring, trusting relationship with them and their families. “Whether it's feeding tiny babies and drawing blood for labs, starting IVs or educating children and their families on medication and disease processes, I love each challenge and take each assignment on in the morning with a smile and a fulfillment that

I was meant to be a pediatric nurse for these kiddos. When the families and kiddos are so thankful for aiding in the care of their child or tiny baby, it is amazing as I watch the stress, uneasiness and anxiety the caregivers have in the beginning of my shift change to comfort and trust throughout the day. Building a sort of bond while caring for their kiddo is the most gratifying thing in my job.”

Chelsea enjoys her fur babies; Ygritte and Bo Schemy, and renovating her first home. She also enjoys being up north and in the Upper Peninsula. “If you can't find me at work or home, I hope to be up north in the UP at our slice of heaven.” Chelsea expressed that she is very blessed with her family, friends and coworkers and has a strong support system in her life. Chelsea recognized her fiancé, her sister and her parents who have always believed in her and pushed her to finish her nursing degree in her 30's even when she doubted herself. Chelsea also recognized her wonderful, amazing co-workers; aka her "Hurley Family."

own. She only ever has kind words to say. When having the most difficult of days, instead of being upset, she smiles and says it’s just a day. Patients love her and staff loves her. I look forward to the days I know I will be working with her. I know working with her it’s going to be the most positive day it can be. Patients request her when they return. She was even nominated as one of our units first few, if not the first, Star of the Month Candidates. Star of the month was a truly earned title. Chelsea is truly an asset to our unit and to Hurley.

When asked what she thought when she was nominated for the Daisy Award, she noted, “to be honest, when I first looked up and realized a little crowd had formed around, I had heart palpitations. But, once I realized it was the Daisy Award, I felt myself get teary eyed and was so humbly honored. I know I am truly where I was meant to be in this department and at Hurley, but for being recognized like this has solidified my purpose for being a Pediatric Nurse.” It is no wonder that Chelsea was nominated when her nomination read: “Chelsea is a nurse who wears her heart on her sleeve. She is someone who no matter the day and what she’s battling in her life, she keeps her chin up. She is one of the most positive nurses I know. Always going above and beyond the call of duty. Always helping other staff in any way possible even when she is not supposed to. She puts the needs of others before her

Have you witnessed an extraordinary registered nurse in action? Nominate an exceptional RN for the DAISY Award. Nomination forms are available in the Cafeteria, 8W Nursing Office and on the Hurley intranet.

HURLEY HOSTS CHRISTMAS PARADE On December 21, Santa led a parade of first responders with lights and sirens going around Hurley Medical Center/Hurley Children’s Hospital to bring the holiday spirit to both kids and adults healing inside. Director of Public Safety Matt Murray, wanted the holidays to be special for Pediatric patients so he asked if Genesee County emergency teams would want to help. So many amazing people answered the call. CMN provided 200 glow sticks for patients and staff to wave down to Santa, police, deputies, firefighters and paramedics. The spirit of the holidays came alive, making hospital stays a little easier. Thank you to the amazing first responders in Genesee County!

continuing medical education (cmE) New DEA Training Requirement via the MATE Act The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, part of the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, requires ALL new or renewing DEA-registered practitioners who prescribe schedule II, III, IV or V drugs to undergo a one-time, eight-hour training requirement incorporating education on the treatment and management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders. Beginning June 27, 2023, practitioners must have completed the one-time training requirement before applying for a license for the first time or to have their license renewed. Recently, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) issued guidance on how the MATE Act expands opportunities for practitioners to fulfill this new training requirement, including how current state-mandated training may count towards the required eight-hours of training. I-PASS Publication Hurley contributes to national pediatric QI data, publication Data from Hurley Medical Center staff, patients and families were included in a February 2024 research article in the medical journal Pediatrics about a quality-improvement project related to patient care. The paper* described the findings from a national implementation project about patient- and family-centered (PFC) rounding within the I-PASS handover framework in pediatrics inpatient units at 21 hospitals in the U.S. At Hurley, the four project site leaders were included as Study Group Authors in Appendix 1 of the article: •

Nathalee Harris RN BSN, Nursing Quality Specialist, Hurley Department of Quality Improvement

Heather Rayburn MHA BSN RN, Administrator for Women and Children's Services

Gwendolyn Reyes MD, Pediatrics Residency Program Director

Mahesh Sharman MD, Pediatrics Intensive Care Director

The PFC I-PASS project took place February 2019 through March 22, with an exemption from the Hurley Institutional Review Board. The QI project found: Hospitals successfully used Mentor-Trios to implement PFC I-PASS. Family-nurse engagement, safety climate, and harms improved in larger hospitals and hospitals with better nurse engagement and intervention adherence. Patient/family experience and teaching were not affected. The project at Hurley went smoothly, despite the interruptions from COVID-19. Hurley Pediatrics and Hurley staff also were part of the national 2015-2016 I-PASS project that demonstrated the effectiveness of the I-PASS curriculum/handover bundle, which included mentorship and "spread" to other departments at Hurley. Site leaders for that project included Scott Kaatz DO, Mona Hanna-Attisha MD MPH, Yaseen Rafee MD, Julie Campe, and Gwendolyn Reyes MD. Since then, Hurley as an institution has adopted the I-PASS handover system housewide (SP 0216 Communication Between Patient Care Providers Providing ‘Hand Off’ of Patients). I-PASS handovers are used by Hurley nursing and all of the residency-training programs in patient care in Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology (in a modified format) and Pediatrics. *Khan A, Patel SJ, Anderson M, et al.
