Going green for more green! Healthy Environment = Healthy Community

Consumers Energy visited the campus to show the money Hurley is saving with its green efforts. Hurley has made strides to recycle 73,983 standard tons of cardboard in the past year. This not only reduced a substantial amount of waste, but is now saving the hospital nearly $6,000 annually.

Hurley has taken many steps to reduce campus energy usage, equal to 7,000 metric tons of CO2 (or the planting of 8,285 acres of trees). We have switched many floors to LED lighting and replaced 90% of pneumatic controls in the East Tower with electronic controls.

Hurley now has more than 240 temperature control zones measured every minute and reporting performance along with Indoor Air Quality monitoring on all floors and real-time fresh air ventilation response.

In 2023-24, our team plans to replace the North Tower AHU and continue with LED lighting upgrades and the DDC upgrade of the North Tower.

These efforts will continue to focus on both patient comfort and energy savings. We have already seen a reduction of comfort complaints by 80% in the East Patient Tower.

nurses week 2023 recap

This month’s DAISY Award Honoree is Andy Lengyel, RN. The DAISY Award celebrates the extraordinary compassion a nurse shows to her patients and their families.

Andy started at Hurley eight years ago with a three month stint in the Emergency Department. Since then, he has worked on the 9 East Medical/ Surgical Oncology Unit. 9 East is home to a very vulnerable patient population, so nurses there have an equally high level of responsibility to their patients. Andy explains his responsibilities simply, saying his days consist of “patient care, wound care, chemo treatments, that kind of thing.” One of his Daisy Award nominations came from a family member of one of his patients, who thought there was more to his efforts. They wrote, “This was the most amazing nurse. He was so kind, caring, and uplifting. He advocated for him like a family member. I am in nursing school right now and Andy is the kind of nurse I aspire to be. I’m sure he had many patients, but he took the time to care for him in the most incredible way."

for extraordinary nurses

Nursing is actually Andy’s second career. Before he became a nurse, he built houses. But then his wife went to school to become a nurse, and there was the 2008 housing market crash. Because of his wife’s experience, he saw what was available. He explains, “I was always good with people, and thought nursing would be good for me, too.” His family’s connection to nursing doesn’t stop there, as his daughter Ellery is also a nurse on 9 East and his other daughter, Valerie, currently works as a CNA.

The nomination took him by surprise, as he normally works three twelve hour shifts a week, and usually on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. He says, “I’m not aware of what gets talked about during the week, so it was all a big surprise.” Still, he appreciates the recognition in the nominations. He explains, “The worst is when a patient is in uncontrollable pain, and I feel unable to help them. So I’m thankful that when a patient and their family are going through a hard time, maybe I’m able to help them and put a smile on their face and make them feel like it’s ok.”

Effective Surgical Solutions for Hernia and Gallbladder Conditions

John N Donkersloot, MD – Hurley Comprehensive Surgery Group

During the Hurley Healthy Living Series on May 11, 2023, Dr. John Donkersloot discussed symptoms and risk factors of gallstones and answered questions from attendees. About 38 million adults in the United States have gallstones, and 20% of them will develop symptoms. If you have symptoms, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician to get an abdominal ultrasound. If you have gallstones with no symptoms, it’s safe to wait until symptoms develop.

Symptoms

Right upper abdominal pain after eating a large meal

> Usually 1 hour after eating

> Sometimes from meals containing fatty foods

Bloating after eating

Jaundice

Indigestion

Risk Factors

Over the age of 40

Female, reproductive age

Pregnancy or oral contraceptive use

Ethnicity (Mexican American, Native American)

Rapid Weight Loss (e.g. after bariatric surgery)

Hemolytic Anemia

Diabetes Mellitus Q&A

What is the surgery like?

This surgery is a minimally invasive cholecystectomy, which is an outpatient surgery that typically last one to two hours. The surgery minimizes risks of developing complications like pancreatitis or other gallstone complications and is often done laparoscopically or robotically. Two of the incisions are 5 millimeters and one of the incisions is less than half of an inch.

Will I be on a special diet after having my gall bladder removed?

The main issue that we see after an operation is sometimes if they have a fatty meal, they’ll have diarrhea, and that’s something that we counsel patients about so that they know. That’s a problem that goes away after a couple of months because the body’s really good at adjusting to processing fatty meals even without a gallbladder.

Do I need gallbladder supplements?

No, typically the gallbladder is sufficient. We typical don’t prescribe these supplements but if someone wants to try them, it’s ok to see if that helps you.

What is the downtime?

We generally see patients in the clinic 7-10 days after the operation and review their pathology report. For a minimally invasive operation it’s usually about 2 weeks or so of not lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk and then gradually increasing activity from there. If your job does not include a ton of heavy activity, you can go back once you feel comfortable, those with more physically demanding jobs may need more time.

Hurley Wellness celebrates employees who are passionate about health, whether that means the individuals have achieved or are working toward a personal mental or physical goal or that they foster a culture of wellness.

Hurley’s Wellness Hero of the Quarter, Shyanne Showerman, embodies all aspects of the award by showing care and respect to others as well as herself.

Shyanne has worked as a registered nurse in the NICU for six years, having gotten her start floating between the PEDS, PICU, and NICU units. Working in the NICU demands that Shyanne focuses on her patients, and that is exactly what she does while at Hurley. Shyanne states she was “very surprised that I was nominated for the Wellness Hero award. It’s nice that someone thought I was inspiring. I just go up to walk on the treadmill after my shift, or during the day I take the stairs and sometimes ask people to join me.”

In terms of wellness goals, she explains that “I have two young daughters so I’m really just trying to show a healthy relationship with food, valuing movement, and showing consistency. I am trying to run in a 10k race, but I just feel better overall when I’m active and eating a balanced diet.” Her favorite physical activity is walking on high inclines because it gets your heart moving, and it can be a quick workout. She also enjoys running and bodyweight exercises. She says, “I think wellness is about caring, respecting, and valuing the body and mind that you have.”

Outside of Hurley, Shyanne likes outdoor activities like camping, traveling, and gardening. She and her family grow raspberries, tomatoes, and all kinds of other vegetables and fruits in their backyard. They even have peach trees.

While Shyanne is humble about the idea of her being a wellness hero, her co-workers have noticed these habits and lifestyle choices. One nomination forms states, “She and her husband grow a lot of their own foods and eat healthy meals, rarely eat fast foods.” Another writes, “She takes walks or does stairs on her lunch breaks and invites others to go along with her, promoting her coworkers to get up and be active when they have the time."

1. High blood pressure affects nearly half of the adult population in the U.S. This includes young adults also.

2. High blood pressure may be linked to dementia - Uncontrolled BP in midlife may create a higher risk for dementia later in life.

3. Hypertension usually doesn't have any symptoms - It is often called the "silent killer".

4. Many people with hypertension do not know it - All adults should monitor their BP regularly and get regular checkups from their physician.

5. Women face unique risks when it comes to high blood pressure  Some types of birth control can raise a woman's risk for high blood pressure. Additionally, hypertension can lead to pregnancy complications which can harm kidneys and other organs as well as lead to premature delivery.

Students honor Dr. Towfiq - again

Not only were medical students honored May 20, 2023, during the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine graduation ceremony at Munn Intramural Field, East Lansing, but one Hurley faculty member also found himself on stage.

Basim Towfiq, MD, a faculty member in Hurley Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Residency Program, was selected by graduating senior medical students from the MSU CHM Flint Campus to receive an excellence in teaching award during graduation.

He has taught MSU medical students since 1995 and has received 10 teaching awards from graduating classes in that time. Dr. Towfiq said he enjoys teaching medical students. “They are just the right learners - enthusiastic, conscientious, and appreciative of every piece of knowledge,” he said. “And they are well oriented - they know their role now and in the future in the society.”

Dr. Towfiq keeps his sights on the long term when educating the next generation of physicians.

“I believe that giving them the best knowledge and setting the best example for them will make them efficient physicians who will best serve humans all over the world,” he said.

Annually, about 100 MSU CHM students complete their last two years of medical school on the Flint Campus, and many rotate with Dr. Towfiq, who provides weekly didactics for students.

Dr. Towfiq, an associate professor at MSU CHM, completed his own internal medicine residency training at Hurley Medical Center and is director of the MSU CHM internal medicine clerkship for the Flint Campus.

MSU CHM is a community-based medical school. First and second year students are at either the Grand Rapids or East Lansing campuses and are assigned to work in one of 90 clinics. Third and fourth year students are assigned specialty-specific clerkships across MSU’s eight community campuses, including the Flint Campus, which has a home base in the former Flint Journal building, across from the Flint Farmers’ Market in downtown Flint.

The requirements apply whether or not the physician is actively engaged in the practice of medicine. No one, including medical school faculty and resident physicians, is exempt from this requirement.

Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the Board of Medicine, of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs.

A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of Medical Ethics.

New DEA Training Requirement via the MATE Act

The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, part of the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, requires ALL new or renewing DEA-registered practitioners who prescribe schedule II, III, IV, or V drugs to undergo a one-time, eight-hour training requirement incorporating education on the treatment and management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders.

Beginning June 27, 2023, practitioners must have completed the one-time training requirement before applying for a license for the first time or to have their license renewed.

Recently, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) issued guidance on how the MATE Act expands opportunities for practitioners to fulfill this new training requirement, including how current state mandated training may count towards the required eight-hours of training.
