These comics are deceptively simple. They demonstrate something that isn’t always easy about friendship, about meeting your friends where they are and giving them what they need in that moment. It makes me think of how no one in the Winnie the Pooh world seems to mind that Eeyore can be a real bummer sometimes. Or that Tigger maybe needs to calm the hell down. Everyone is appreciated and gets an invite to the party. We can all strive to be as good to our friends as the cute little animals in this book are to theirs.

NEURO/TRAUMA/SURGICAL/BURN UNIT

The Neuro/Trauma/Surgical/Burn Unit (NTSB) is Hurley’s June Team of the Season for 2023.

Nurse Manager Kim Lipka, Trauma Clinician

Chris Berry, and Assistant Nurse Manager Kim Campbell were interviewed for this article, but they are not the only team members being recognized. They stressed that every nurse in NTSB is an integral part of the team's effectiveness when it comes to patient care, and that they have all grown into a family over the years.

Lipka, the Nurse Manager, has worked on the unit for eighteen years. She spends time each day making sure staffing needs are met and attending meetings, but she values being there for the other nurses and patients and their families. She says, “If the unit didn’t have the team it does, it wouldn’t be successful. That's why we've all stayed in the unit for so long.” Berry has also worked on the unit for eighteen years. He has recently taken on the role as Trauma Clinician. A position that involves assisting with developing policies and guidelines for the unit, educating and training other staff. He says that over the years he has seen his coworkers constantly

“have the willingness to adapt and learn, to understand and improve the care we give to patients.” As Assistant Nurse Manager, Campbell – who has been in the unit for twelve years - has a wide-ranging list of responsibilities including coordinating bedside procedures, managing visitors to the unit, and helping other nurses with anything they need throughout the day. She says, “In our unit, no one can work as an individual. We’re all multitasking, all the time. When something happens, everyone pitches in 100%.”

Lipka explains just how busy the unit is, saying, “We’re constantly getting new traumas, burns, multi-system failures. It’s a high acuity unit, so there is so much going on, all the time.” Berry adds, “along with day to day patient care there’s also constantly changing equipment and policies, so we have to find time for continuous learning.” It is that adversity that the NTSB nurses find success in. Campbell clarifies, “It is hard work, but the interactions between the nurses, and seeing everyone come together and work as a team when a patient is in need. This is the best part about this job.”

6 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER
team of the season

It is no surprise that Lipka, Berry, and Campbell all like the challenges working in a Level 1 Trauma Center and providing specialty care to patients. They all have personal connections that drove them to work in healthcare. Lipka’s grandfather was a doctor, and she remembers wanting to be a nurse since childhood. Berry’s brother is also a nurse. When Campbell’s son got sick and needed care, the patience and education she received from his medical team made her pursue a career in nursing.

That feeling of family now extends to the camaraderie that has developed among the nurses in the NTSB unit. Lipka says her favorite memories at Hurley are getting together with her coworkers outside of the hospital. Berry agreed, saying he values all of the relationships that have been developed with long-time coworkers. Campbell says the most rewarding aspect of the job is sharing in the sense of accomplishment, saying, “We’re like a family, and nothing makes us happier than seeing a patient who had suffered devastating injuries being able to walk back into the unit on their own.”

Teams are awarded this recognition based on their demonstration of a collaborative spirit, mutual accountability, support to others, fulfillment of Hurley’s mission and overall positive attitude.

To Nominate: Complete nomination form on Hurley’s Intranet and submit or drop your nomination in a HMC Voicebox.

After noticing how many employees were called out for exceptional patient/customer service in reviews earlier this year, Hurley’s Employee Engagement decided to thank stellar staffers in a unique way. After lots of brainstorming they launched an internal “Thanks a Lotto” campaign to reward staff members who are specifically named in a positive Press Ganey patient survey or an online Google review. Employees receive thank you cards that contain a $1 Michigan instant lottery ticket. The hopes were high that someone would scratch off a BIG winner! Prizes include a chance to win $2, $5, $10, $20, $30, $40, $100, $200 or $5,000.

Korey Jackson from the Mother/Baby unit said, “The employee receiving the card and lottery ticket is uplifted and the others on the team are cheering them on to win! The excitement is contagious.”

Press Ganey surveys determine HCAHPS Scores. The scores play a pivotal part in hospital reimbursement through the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program. The higher a hospital’s HCAHPS scores, the higher their reimbursements will be, and vice versa. As a result, low HCAHPS scores impact a hospital’s bottom line in two ways: by hindering their reputation among consumers and limiting the amount of funding they receive from Medicare.

Google star ratings have shown that hospitals that held better ratings and reviews tend to have higher annual revenue. These findings come as more patients are accessing online reviews to make healthcare decisions. A 2022 survey from Software Advice revealed that 82 percent of patients use online reviews to make a decision about where to access healthcare. Negative Google reviews serve as a deterrent for many patients, regardless of a referral from their primary care physician.

All the employees named in these positive reviews understand that how they speak to their patients can sometimes be more important than what they say. Their kind and caring approach allows them to connect on an emotional level. Not only does this help them understand their patients better, the patient experience is immediately elevated.

Listed below are the employees that were specifically named in a Press Ganey survey or an online Google review April 1, 2023 – June 30, 2023. If you wish to add your name to this growing list, keep the patient experience as your top priority no matter what your role is here at Hurley. If someone thanks you for your service, don’t hesitate to ask them for a positive review. Not all patients receive a Press Ganey survey, but all of them can leave a five-star Google review with your name attached. Who knows, you might win the $5,000 jackpot!

This month’s DAISY Award Honoree is Tanesha Hippolyte, RN. The DAISY Award celebrates the extraordinary compassion a nurse shows to her patients and their families.

Tanesha started at Hurley fourteen years ago, and has been on 7 East each of those years. Besides the wide variety of responsibilities every registered nurse has in regards to patient care, because of her experience, she often covers for the charge nurse when they are not available. Taking responsibility and being there for others is just who she is, as she explains, “I have an innate want to help people. My mother said one of the first things I ever wished for when I was three years old was a doctor’s set with a stethoscope.”

When she moved to Michigan from New Orleans, her sister helped her with her youngest two children while she finished school at Mott Community College. She started working at Hurley soon after. She says some of her favorite memories of Hurley are from those days, “A lot of the older crew

for extraordinary nurses

from when I started, both CNAs and RNs, they helped mold me into who I am as an RN today. I learned a lot from them, and my best memories are how I was taught how to be a nurse. I’m glad I came into the hospital when I did.” Now, her oldest son is 28 years old, and her middle child just graduated with a masters in molecular biology, and is working to be a PA. Her youngest daughter is in college.

About what inspires her to continue being a nurse, she says “When the patients tell me thanks and tell me they appreciate me, that's how I know I’ve done my part as an RN. But even without that, in my heart I think this is what I was meant to do. Sometimes because the draining parts can be overwhelming at times, you have to let the good outweigh the bad and keep working to help patients. I have to give them my all. When the patients and their families say thank you that means everything to me.”

Water and Pool Safety

Drowning is a leading cause of death among young children nationally with backyard pools posing the highest risk for children under age 5. To help prevent water-related injury and drowning:

• Supervise children in and around water at all times.

• Whenever infants and toddlers are in or around water, including the bathtub, an adult should be within an arm's length at all times providing "touch supervision."

• Teach young children to always ask for permission before going near the water.

• Do not dive headfirst into the water.

• Do not swim during a storm or when there is lightning.

• Completely separate the house and play area of the yard from the pool area with a fence. Consider automatic door locks or alarms to prevent access.

• Remove floats, balls, and other toys from the pool after use so that children are not tempted to reach for them. After children are done swimming, secure the pool so they cannot get back in.

• Keep rescue equipment (such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver) and a phone near the pool.

• For children who cannot swim, use a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

• Do not use toys such as "water wings” or "noodles” in place of life jackets. These are not designed to keep swimmers safe.

The new installation of the NICU Hall of Fame was unveiled for Children’s Hospital Week this past April as a way to uplift staff and families who rely on the region’s only Level III NICU. Thanks in part to national Children’s Miracle Network partner Ace Hardware, it can be viewed in the hallway leading to the NICU and features stories of Ellie, Kaidyn, Miracle, as well as triplets

Dylan, Ethan and Logan. Families like the Sessinks are grateful to share their stories to inspire and help others.

After being transferred from another area hospital to a high risk team at Hurley Children’s Hospital, Jessica and Justin Sessink were attending appointments at Hurley every other week to check in on their triplets until one day, the team informed her that her cervix had shortened too much and she would need to start coming into Hurley more frequently for ultrasounds.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced intense visitor restrictions at the hospital during the first week of Jessica’s new appointment schedule, so she had to come completely alone. Jessica woke up the morning of her 27 week appointment feeling wonderful. She kissed her daughter Sophia goodbye, and headed out saying she’d be back in a couple of hours, but her babies had another plan in mind. The newest members of the aptly named Sessink Squad were delivered by emergency C-section later that day.

In so many ways, the coronavirus pandemic made life more difficult and more isolated in the year 2020, but for the Sessink’s it provided them with the time they needed to slow down, and gave them three beautiful, healthy baby boys. Today, the boys keep their parents and big sister Sophia very busy. They enjoy being outside, and enjoy camping around the state making memories together. The Sessink triplets are NICU miracles!

Cindy Luxton is July’s Volunteer of the Month. She started in the Lobby Shop this past fall after looking online for local places to volunteer. Now she helps out Mondays and Wednesdays every week, and her passion for organization has been a huge asset. After working on the main storage area, Cindy found out there is an additional storage space, and has begun organizing that. She explains, “I’d never worked in any sort of retail in my life, and then when I started doing the stockroom I thought, this is heaven to me.” Cindy is also helping get everything prepared for the big clearance sale that the Lobby Shop has during Employee Appreciation Week.

Her background in purchasing - she was a buyer for Siemens medical equipment for more than a decade – comes in handy when doing the annual inventory. Cindy elaborates, “It’s done manually but it was cool because it got me used to what products we carry.” She also said she was totally blown away when she found out she had been nominated for Volunteer of the Month, because as she says, “I’m just doing what I love.”

Originally from the Brighton/Pinckney area, her role with Siemens took her from Novi then to Grand Rapids. Family is what initially brought her to the Genesee County area, when her daughter’s family moved to Flushing and she started helping watch her grandkids. Cindy’s now fully involved in the community there,

volunteering at the Flushing Outreach Center where they provide food and clothes for those in need.

She also likes to go on walks, which would sometimes take her past the Flushing Cemetery. The cemetery offered a class about how to clean the graves, and she decided to begin volunteering there as well saying, “It’s almost like meditation to me, and I like the old ones. Some of the graves have been there 100 or more years and there are beautiful monuments.”

The people are Cindy’s favorite part about volunteering and she likes feeling like she’s accomplished something. Speaking about Hurley specifically, Cindy says, “The people here are awesome. I’ve been here as a patient a couple of times and it’s just amazing. I love this hospital.”

When she is not volunteering, Cindy loves Pilates and Zumba so spends a lot of time at the YMCA in Flushing. She also loves babysitting her grandkids, there are twelve in total who live in other areas throughout Michigan. In the summer Cindy likes to take as many grandkids as she can on picnics to ForMar Nature Preserve. Cindy recently took her grandson to Sloan Museum of Discovery’s Real Bodies exhibit saying, “He was curious and so excited, there’s just so much going on here, like the Planetarium. There’s always something to do.”

Recently, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) issued guidance on how the MATE Act expands opportunities for practitioners to fulfill this new training requirement, including how current state mandated training may count towards the required eight-hours of training.
