For Employee Appreciation Week, Team Hurley

was rockin'

Crocs thanks to 3rd shift 5 West nurse Scott Bricault.

Or more specifically, thanks to Sandie Bricault, Scott’s wife who entered him into a contest with the company after seeing an email to nominate a nurse for Nurse’s Week. Scott had no idea she had nominated him so was completely surprised to find out he won.

Scott was a travel nurse during COVID who stayed in a camper in his driveway so he wouldn't get his family sick. After a stint at Hurley, he realized what a special place it is to work, and took a full time position. He credits the combination of everyone working together as what makes Hurley so special.

the

Crocs then chose seven hospitals across the country for a generous donation of over 1000 pairs of comfortable Crocs. We were thrilled to learn that Hurley was among the fortunate recipients! The Hurley Marketing team took charge of the initiative, accepting 8 pallets of Crocs, and seamlessly coordinating the grand giveaway event.

Undertaking this endeavor was no small feat, but the sight of the delighted winners made every effort worthwhile. The event saw a total distribution of 1,246 pairs of Crocs, accompanied by socks and Jibbitz, bringing

Celebrating Extraordinary Compassion: Erica Perry, RN Receives the DAISY Award

In the realm of healthcare, nurses often become unsung heroes, devoting themselves to the well-being of patients and their families. Their compassion and dedication leave a lasting impact on the lives they touch. This month, we celebrate the outstanding contributions of Erica Perry, RN, as she is honored with the prestigious DAISY Award for her exceptional care and empathy at Hurley Medical Center.

Erica's journey at Hurley began in January after completing her nursing degree at the University of Michigan-Flint. Hailing from Swartz Creek, where she attended high school, Erica was drawn to Hurley from the very beginning. Having previously worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the medical center, she knew that Hurley was the place where she wanted to continue her career.

Little did Erica know that her dedication and compassionate nature would soon be recognized with the DAISY Award. As a newcomer to the DAISY ceremony, she was puzzled by the presence of colleagues and administrators when the award was presented. When the true reason for the gathering was revealed, her surprise turned into immense pride. Reflecting on her experiences, Erica describes her average day at Hurley as anything but ordinary. The dynamic nature of her work keeps her engaged and fulfilled. She

for extraordinary nurses

cherishes the camaraderie with her coworkers and finds joy in building meaningful relationships with her patients. Erica's journey to becoming a nurse took a surprising turn. Originally planning to become a Physician Assistant (PA), she worked as a CNA to accumulate the necessary hours but soon discovered her passion for the nursing approach and decided to pursue it wholeheartedly.

Outside of her medical career, Erica enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring nature through hiking. She has a special fondness for places like Brighton and Seven Lakes State Parks, where she can unwind and connect with the world around her. Additionally, her downtime is made even better by the companionship of her beloved cat, Peanut.

Colleagues and patients alike praise Erica for her exceptional care and attention to detail. Her ability to spot even the smallest changes in a patient's symptoms has been commended and appreciated. One particular nomination emphasized how Erica's professionalism and empathy had a significant impact on a patient's family. Her dedication to providing quality care not only eased the family's anxiety but also positively affected the patient's well-being.

The DAISY Award was established to recognize nurses like Erica Perry, who go above and beyond the call of duty to bring comfort, care and compassion to those they serve. With her caring nature and commitment to patient well-being, Erica truly embodies the essence of the Daisy Award.

On July 17, 2023 Hurley Foundation celebrated a $550,000 commitment from Panda Express associates and guests, which helped fund two activity rooms for the Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit at Hurley Children's Hospital. The opening of the “Panda Cares Center of Hope” spaces inside this new unit will positively impact countless children and their families.

Since the Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit's opening in late 2022, we have treated more than 384 patients struggling with behavioral medical issues. Inside the 14-bed unit, Hurley experts provide compassionate support during stressful times and help children cope more effectively with life issues, mental health distress, instability and depression.

In total, there are just 5 Panda Express locations that support Hurley Children’s Hospital through year-round CMN fundraising efforts in their restaurants. Being able to interact one-on-one with these associates and provide them with an opportunity to see our CMN hospital this past month was remarkable.

We are grateful for the support Panda Express has provided to Hurley Children's Hospital since its partnership with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals began in 2008.

Thank you, Panda Express associates and guests, for making sure our CMN hospital is able to continue to meet the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of our pediatric patients!

Continuing Education Requirements for Michigan Medical Doctors

Authority: Public Act 368 of 1978, as amended

REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL

The continuing education requirements apply to every physician renewing a Michigan medical license who has been licensed in the 3-year period immediately preceding the application for renewal. The requirements apply whether or not the physician is actively engaged in the practice of medicine. No one, including medical school faculty and resident physicians, is exempt from this requirement.

Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the Board of Medicine, of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs.

A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of Medical Ethics.

A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of Pain and Symptom Management, and at least 1 of the 3 hours must include controlled substance prescribing

Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA)

Mandatory Training Standards

• LARA requires a one-time mandatory training in Opioids and Other Controlled Substances Awareness for prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances.

• LARA requires a one-time mandatory training in Identifying Victims of Human Trafficking.

• LARA requires a minimum of three hours, every 3-year renewal cycle, in Implicit Bias Training.*

*NEW - revised LARA general rules pertaining to Implicit Bias Training include:

1. Allowing asynchronous webinars or other recordings as acceptable modalities (no longer mandated to be live).

2. The minimum of three hours training now count as part of the CME credit hours required every 3-year renewal cycle.

New DEA Training Requirement via the MATE Act

The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, part of the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, requires ALL new or renewing DEA-registered practitioners who prescribe schedule II, III, IV or V drugs to undergo a one-time, eight-hour training requirement incorporating education on the treatment and management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders.

Beginning June 27, 2023, practitioners must have completed the one-time training requirement before applying for a license for the first time or to have their license renewed.

Recently, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) issued guidance on how the MATE Act expands opportunities for practitioners to fulfill this new training requirement, including how current state-mandated training may count towards the required eight-hours of training.
