VANCHÉ GOLDEN

Vanché Golden, Hurley’s Employee of the Month for August, started here back in 1998 as a tray passer in the Nutritional Services Department. After being born in Florida, her family moved here when she was still a young child. When she first started at Hurley, she intended on eventually transitioning to work in the medical field, but she found she didn’t have the stomach for that work. She has stayed in the department since, working just about every job, including the department call center, cooking, and cashiering. Today she holds the position of food services supervisor, and still has her hand in a lot of the day to day operations.

As the opening supervisor, Vanché makes sure that there is sufficient staff to cover all of the department’s responsibilities. That includes scheduling and assigning roles, while also completing payroll. During the day she does whatever is needed to keep things running smoothly, like counting down cash to help the cashiers stay prepared and covering call-off shifts. There are a lot of moving parts. Vanché explains, “The toughest part of my job is making sure there are enough staff members on duty to get everything done, both in regards to patient care and the needs of the cafeteria. But the best part is just getting to interact with so many coworkers and customers every day. Even problem solving when there is a customer complaint. I like to work towards end results that make the customer happy.” Being named Employee of the Month was a huge surprise. Her supervisor told her she needed two minutes of her time. Vanché went to see what was needed and found Melany Gavulic and a large crowd in the cafeteria. As she says, “Normally I’m the one nominating people, so the situation really got reversed on me this time.”

Outside of work, Vanché is family-oriented. She especially loves bowling, and her family bowls with her. She explains, “My son was in a bowling league when he was younger. So we all went and got bowling balls and matching shoes. It all started from there, and we’ve been bowling ever since.”

Vanché received a gift package that included a pizza party with her team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a framed certificate. Congratulations, Vanché!

Vanché has been a solid member of the department for many years. Her capability to juggle so many things, from payroll to the schedule, to filling open spots and handling the ever changing landscape of the department on a daily basis makes her such a valuable asset to us. Vanché has also been instrumental in handling both patient and retail customer concerns as well as troubleshooting equipment problems so things run smoothly and has a great source of past knowledge to share with the members of the team. It is a pleasure to work with her.
