1 Project Les Docks Fashion School

This studio project was located in the Paris Rive Gauche, a new neighborhood in the thirteenth arrondissement bordered by the Seine. My specific site location was the building adjacent to the City of Fashion and Design, otherwise known as Les Docks. Les Docks is the site of the old general storehouses on the quai d’Austerlitz which was converted into the City of Fashion and Design. The proposal was an expansion of this fashion school to include a new young professionals work site. Students would find a seamless transition from their education to the professional world with community office resources, event spaces, and flexible work environments. The focus of work was in using the existing structure of the building as a framework for my intervention. It became a system of connections not only to the structure but to the program, community, Seine River, and the Paris Fashion network.

2 Project Fenway Affordable Housing

The Fenway Affordable Housing studio was a testing ground for the Fenway Community Development Corporation (CDC). They were testing the possibilities of integrating senior housing with graduate housing in the Fenway Area with a focus on micro units. The design approach taken for this problem was taking the micro unit and making it feel bigger than it was. Providing “neighborhoods within the building and a wall system that moved allowed for pockets of rooms to be arranged in a way that they could share larger living space. In addition to each shared living room there are common areas throughout, most notably the outdoor balconies and exterior living room. The shape of the building with these elements combined give a sense of community no matter where you are in the building.

3 Project Government Service Center

The large expanse of building known as the Government Service Center created an impass within the heart of downtown Boston. Breaking down this “superblock was crucial to re-knitting the urban fabric of the West End neighborhood. By reconnecting existing streets and providing program that interacts with the surrounding area the Government Service Center is given new life and greater meaning within the city. The proposal reconnects a former set of streets through the site, developing a new multi-modal way. The new street reinvigorates the Government Service Center and gives opportunities for public life such as shopping, art galleries, housing, and a museum. I would like to thank my team members for their contribution to this project: Madeline Shack, Aimee Naranjo, Naomi Nwaobi, Alyssa DeMento

4 Project The Annex Connector

Our own university was used for this project. The hypothetical situation was posed to create an addition to connect the North, South, and Central wings of the Annex buildings. With an understanding that most interactions between students and faculty happen in passing, this became the driver for the project. The hallways and spaces in-between the main rooms are the generator of connection. People from different majors, graduating year, even faculty, find these inbetween spaces and use them to create a sense of connection Student lounges and large communal spaces such as the atriums, courtyard, and cafĂŠ provide organic moments of passing that foster connection and community. Additionally, a new hub is created around centrally located program, drawing each major out from their designated space in Annex where all they can overlap and learn together.

5 Project Living With Water

Climate change is a pressing issue in the world today and our studio faced this challenge head on. The focus of the project was designing the new headquarters for the Boston Harbor Association with an emphasis on resilient design. The new headquarters needed to work with rising tides as it was located directly on the harbor. Rather than build walls to fight the water, the design embraces the floods that will come. Three separate buildings with strategically located program place the most important aspects out of harm’s way. The administrative building sits safely above the 100-year flood line in a newly created walkable hill. A focus on sustainable and net zero approaches was also implemented. Passive cooling strategies, material choices, and orientations were carefully selected to work with the Architecture 2030 Challenge.
