Letter from the Editor

Welcome to the April issue of Humps N Horns!

Everyone’s attention seems to be turned towards the full solar eclipse that is coming in the first part of April. In our part of Texas, we seem to be in the direct path of it so it will be easy for us to see something that is pretty amazing.

Hopefully, once we return to normal following all the emergency declarations, you can use our Where’s the Beef section to find a bull riding event near you.

Until next time,

Convictions

Hey, go ahead and have convictions for yourself but also Grace that will allow people to live out their own convictions even if they don’t match yours. Spiritual arrogance bothers me as much as anything. We all should be careful how we handle our understanding of God’s gift of salvation as we relate to others because not all are in the same place of understanding.

The Ol, I’ve got it all worked out so come up to where I am attitude is pure evil in my mind. No levels In Christ.

Here’s a bit of Scripture;

“Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.

Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord.

So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

It is written: “

Each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.”

Hunter Maxwell

California bull rider, Hunter Maxwell, has found his place in the sport of bull riding, despite some tremendous obstacles that have come his way. At 17, he has already had the chance to ride with the PBR in the mini bull series and will be joining the pros for the Challenge of Champions Tour this year. He believes that the bull riding industry is truly where he is supposed to be and cannot imagine making a future anywhere else.

KT: Hey Hunter, thanks for chatting with me today.

HM: Thank you for having me do an interview.

KT: Absolutely! I want to start off with some basic information about you and then we will get into your career as a bull rider, okay?

HM: Yep, sounds good.

KT: Where are you from and what grade are you in?

HM: I am from Los Molinos in northern California, and I am in 11th grade.

KT: What are your plans after high school?

HM: I plan to become a professional bull rider. If that doesn’t work out for some reason, I think I would want to become a stock contractor.

KT: What’s your interest in contracting stock?

HM: Well, we have a few bulls at my house now, and I really enjoy working with them, they are amazing animals and they have become a big part of my life. I think I care about them just as much as myself. I don’t ever see myself not having them around.

KT: Tell us a little more about getting into the contractor business, how does it work?

HM: It is a tricky business to get into, but we all start somewhere, I am working right now to build good stock and work my way up. There are not many guys in my part of California who have bulls, so I think there could be a market here.

KT: You are the first rider we have talked to from California, can you share a bit about how riding in California is different from other states you might have ridden in?

HM: I have a few friends in Texas, and they are traveling to bull ridings every weekend, but that isn’t the case here. I would say it is a disadvantage because you just don’t get to ride as much as you would somewhere else, but I have still managed to find places to ride. We do have a lot of cool venues and places to

ride, but it takes more work to find them. Another thing with California is that for a while, they were trying to ban the sport all together, but luckily that didn’t happen.

KT: Yeah, I heard about that last year before Vegas. How do you deal with that backlash from people?

HM: I mean honestly, I think people aren’t educated enough to understand what is going on. They see it as abuse, but these bulls are raised for this, it is in their blood, they want to buck. And honestly as someone who has bulls, they get treated very well, sometimes better than people do. Stock contractors truly do take care of their animals and rodeo is a sport that has been around a long time, it goes back to our western heritage and continues to have good values behind it. I think more sports need to be like us.

KT: That is very true. There is a big misconception about the industry. I am glad California didn’t pass the legislation. Can you tell readers a bit more about your story and how you got into bull riding?

HM: I don’t come from a family that did rodeo, I saw it on tv, and I knew I wanted to do it. I worked my way up by starting

out slow with sheep, before moving to calves, and then to mini bulls. I have had the chance to ride in the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas with professional mini bull riders for the PBR Global Cup and the PBR in Anaheim. That is really where it started to set in for me that this is what I want to do with my life.

KT: What is one of your favorite goals that you have accomplished in this sport?

HM: In 2023, I competed in the Challenge of Champions Tour at their tour finals in Central Point, Oregon. I ended up winning the year in the juniors and they asked me to move up to the pros, which I am incredibly excited to have a chance to do this summer. They have rodeos all over and I am looking forward to riding with them. Another big accomplishment was getting to win the first annual Stetson Wright Bull Riding in the mini bulls.

KT: Those are awesome accomplishments, congratulations! Obviously, you have found success here but for those times when things aren’t going your way, what keeps you coming back?

Humps-Horns.com · 10 · April 2024

HM: It feels like something I was meant to do, and I can’t see myself doing anything else. I am getting more and more involved in the industry, and it just feels right. I have had a chance to meet amazing people and go to some awesome places and I wish more people got to experience what I do because it truly is a blessing.

KT: What does this summer look like for you?

HM: I have a rodeo almost every weekend and practice every week. I am pretty booked but I am super excited to see where I get this summer.

KT: Where are some cool places you are headed?

HM: I have a lot in Oregon, California, Nevada and Montana.

KT: What does your mindset look like going into some of these bigger places?

HM: I would say it is very intimidating to be on some of these bigger stages, but I have started to look at it as me vs. my bull, not worrying about what is going on around me. When I focus more on riding the bull that I am covering at that moment

and not worrying about anything else, I have found that I do better. You can’t have the mindset that you are just going to go in and donate your money. You have to go in expecting that you can ride your bull.

KT: Can you talk about the sacrifices this sport requires?

HM: You have to want it in this sport, it can’t just be a bucket list thing. You have to give it your all, this is your job. The bulls don’t care who you are, where you come from, how much money you have, they are here to do a job and so are you. I am not sure that all riders look at it that way, but you have to look at it from that point of view. If you aren’t willing to go all in, then it might be time for you to look for a different hobby.

KT: What are some challenges that you have faced?

HM: The biggest one is that in 2021 my dad passed away from Covid, which hit me really hard. It was hard on my whole family. It affected my riding, and it seemed like for a while that nothing was possible. I couldn’t ride a bull to save my life, but I finally got to a point where I had to accept it and move

Jose Vitor Leme out for remainder of 2024

Unleash The Beast campaign

PUEBLO, Colo. – While the 2024 Unleash The Beast season has undoubtedly been one for the books, full of epic rookie performances from the likes of No. 1 Cassio Dias, No. 2 John Crimber and company, the premier series pack has also endured its fair share of injuries as the world’s top bull riders continue to go head-to-head with the rankest bulls in the business.

Battling a groin injury for what seems like the entire 2024 slate, two-time World Champion Jose Vitor Leme is one of the A-list cowboys who has struggled to be available this year.

In limited action, he’s a stellar 9-for-14 (64.29%) on the season, but only one of the scores was a 90-pointer.

When he was around, it just didn’t seem like the same “Champ” figure we’ve been so used to watching.

And while we’ve known he hasn’t been at 100% at any point this season, we all still had it in the back of our minds that the AllWorld talent was likely just saving some juice for the late-season stretch.

Only to put on the grandest of comeback shows at the 2024 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast!

Well, that narrative is now out the window.

Ranked No. 26 in the world, as he’s competed in just six events this season, the veteran made the difficult choice to hang it up for the remainder of the campaign and focus his recovery efforts on the quickly approaching PBR Camping World Team Series season.

Taking to Instagram Tuesday evening to make the announcement, the talented Brazilian shared the following message, translated via the social media platform:

“The past few months have been one of great battles where I battled an injury that left me out of much of the Unleash The Beast season, the PBR Individual World Championship.

Due to this, I have had to make the hardest decision of my professional career so far and I would like to officially announce

Humps-Horns.com · 12 · April 2024

that I will not be competing in any of the remaining five events of this UTB season. Consequently, I will also not be competing in the PBR World Finals in May, being out of what would be my eighth-straight World Final.

This was a necessary decision, as I’ve faced constant pain with every bull I ride, and to insist on competing besides not getting me the results I’ve always sought, can aggravate this injury even further and compromise my future.

I will continue my daily efforts to recover from this injury and hope to return to competing soon, chasing my next goal which is to help the Austin Gamblers win the 2024 PBR Team Series.

I want to thank in advance for the fundamental support of my family, my friends, my sponsors, my team and especially the fans who are with me every moment.

Good luck to my friends who will continue in this PBR World Title contention and I’m sure this will be one of the best seasons ever.

I’ll be back soon. God bless you all!”

Leading the Austin Gamblers to two-consecutive regular season titles en route to securing first-round byes at the 2022 and 2023

PBR Teams Championships inside the luxurious T-Mobile Arena, Leme has been a staple for the electric 5-on-5 series.

Selected No. 1 overall some three summers ago by Head Coach

Michael Gaffney and General Manager J.J. Gottsch, the 27-yearold has only exceeded expectations, capturing the first two PBR Teams MVP awards in stunning fashion.

Turning in a runner-up effort during the 2023 UTB season, Leme will have to wait until the 2025 campaign for his next shot at joining fellow greats Silvano Alves and Adriano Moraes in the exclusive three-time winner’s club.

For now, he’ll rest up and prepare for training camp with his green and black squad, who will very much need him to be in tip-top condition, as the squad and each of the other seven inaugural PBR Teams organizations prepare to lend talent to the league’s pair of new teams in the Oklahoma Wildcatters and the New York Mavericks.

Inspiration Point

And Whatever You Do...

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things (Colossians 3:2)

“Dear God, I want a good job… (pause here for effect)… amen.”

Every now and then our prayers sound a lot like this. We ask God hoping that our dream job will be given to us. Maybe it’s not our dream job, maybe it’s our dream house or even our dream spouse. We have these ideals for our lives, however far from God’s calling we are.

There was this green and clear plastic cage that would house a gross, fuzzy caterpillar that the elementary kids picked from some weeds. If this insect got enough food, sunshine and water, eventually it would wrap itself in a cocoon and transform. It was a very simple and yet complex process that we all learned at a young age. The caterpillar always changed into a butterfly. We learned that transformations were not only possible, but they were beautiful.

This is how transformations in Christ look. Our old selves are stripped away and our new selves are created…and it is beautiful. This creation of being in Christ is something that causes a complete change.

Not only is this truth something that saves us, but it is something that changes us. If you know the Gospel and the truth of Jesus, and it doesn’t change you, then you don’t know it. The call of Christ is something that wholly changes you from the inside out.

Our lives should reflect the amazing change that Christ does. From the inside-out our lives should look different.

In his letter to the Colossians, Paul calls us to put our old selves away and be rebuilt within Christ. Paul says twice in the first few verses to set our hearts and minds on things above; also that we are the chosen people of God. God chooses us. When we accept that we are under God and that he is our king, only then will we be able to selflessly serve Him.

This passage continues to tell us that we should put to death the things that don’t glorify Christ; things such as sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed.

All of these things are contrary to the plans that God has for our lives. These things get in the way and fog our view for what God’s will is. Along with those things are anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language.

When we are transformed by Christ, all of this is to be removed from our life. However, our inherent desires are to fulfill the desires of the flesh. We have to actively fight against the ugly sin in our lives, which is only through the truth of Jesus Christ that we can be saved from the faults and brokenness.

Not only does Paul speak of all of the things to discard in our lives, but he also reminds us of all of the traits God’s chosen people should bear; compassion, kindness, gentleness, patience and forgiveness. This passage in Colossians tells us how we ought to dream and set our minds on things above (heavenly).

Our hopes, our dreams, our aspirations should be set on things of eternal value, which is in Christ alone. So when we dream, we need to turn our hearts and minds toward the glory of God. Through that, God’s marvelous and glorious plan will come to fruition in our lives.

Dear brothers and sisters, as we approach God with willing hearts as eager servants, may He who transformed our hearts become the center for all the glory.

Bull riding has always been a fan favorite of the rodeo. Did you ever wonder why bull riding was always the last event in a rodeo? Is it possible that event coordinators knew that fans were guaranteed to stay to the end until the bull riding was over? There were some cowboys who believed that bull riding could actually be a stand-alone sport. In 1992, a group of 20 trailblazing bull riders met in an Arizona motel room and each pledged $1,000 to form a new organization. They believed that bull riding, rodeo’s most popular event, could become a stand-alone sport and offer bull riders a chance to make a lot of money in the “toughest sport on dirt”. This would also bring new life and growth to bull riding. They created the PBR (Professional Bull Riders), and the rest is history!

Fast forward 30 years, and the PBR has been wildly successful. Bull riding has become a stand-alone phenom that is enjoyed by dozens upon dozens of organizations and hundreds of thousands of fans across the country and the world!

One of the more popular fan favorites today is the bull teams. A bull team competition is where multiple stock contractors bring two bulls and two riders to ride their bulls to an event. They pay an entry fee for their bulls and their riders. The bulls are bucked with their riders, and a team of judges score the bulls on their performance. Those scores are added together with the rider’s time. The highest total of the team’s two bull scores and two rider times denotes the winner.

There is a new bull team event on the map at the Wyloh Ranch in Grandview, Texas called Bull Teams Only. President, CEO, and founder Chad Johnson said, “Bull Teams Only is the largest paying bull team event in the world. We pay out $50,000 to the top bull team, and $8,000 to the top rider. Our total pay-out is over $125,000.”

The BTO website boldly declares, “Bull Teams Only is a premier bull riding event that showcases the best bull riders in the world. Our events are held in Grandview, Texas, and

Humps-Horns.com · 16 · April 2024

draw in riders from all over the world. With exciting competitions and a family-friendly atmosphere, Bull Teams Only is the ultimate bull riding experience.”

BTO is unique because they use six judges instead of four. These judges all score the bulls, but the highest and lowest scores are eliminated before the bull scores are added to the rider time. This helps eliminate any possible scoring favoritism by the judges. They also award an eight-point bonus to the team score if both riders ride their bulls to the buzzer. “We just feel that this makes it fair and gives everyone a legitimate chance of winning,” Chad declared.

“This thing has really grown,” Chad revealed. “This event started out as a hobby last year, but it was very successful. Then this year we had about 500 bull riding fans at our first event in March. We have almost outgrown our arena here. Our next event is scheduled for April 27,

and we are expecting between 1,000 and 2,000 fans! We will have team bull riding, food vendors, and a big concert after the event. We are pleased to announce that Josh Ward will be our concert headliner!’

The BTO event is sanctioned by the ABBI for contractors bringing three and four-year-old classic bulls to the competitions. The event draws some big-name contractors like D&H Cattle, D4 Cattle Company, Austin Rodeo Ranch, Knapp Ranch, and Bloyd Land and Cattle. It also draws some top bull riders from the PBR and the PRCA. Riders like Cooper Davis, Jose Vitor Leme, Caden Bunch, Thiago Salgado, Mike Lee, Bob Mitchell, Marco Eguchi, Braidy Randolph, Aaron Pass, McKennon Wimberly, Joao Henrique Lucas, and Brayden Kilcrease.

In addition to hosting BTO, Wyloh Ranch is a commercial ranch, raising red angus cattle and bucking bulls. They also have a clothing line of cowboy apparel and operate an online retail clothing line under the banner “From Our Ranch to Your Front Door”. “We are the real-life Yellowstone,” Chad noted. “We launched the clothing line to educate people about the rich heritage of the land and grass-fed cattle.” Chad and Chief Marketing Director Jamie Johnson invite you to access the Wyloh Ranch apparel line at wylohranch.com.

VP, co-founder of BTO and Wyloh Ranch Manager, Dale Fultz regularly hauls Wyloh Ranch Bucking Bulls to bull team competitions all over the country. Chad and Wyloh Ranch are also partnered with Bloyd Land and Cattle on several bulls. “Lance Bloyd is my old traveling partner and best friend,” Chad shared. “We had the first two bucking bulls of Wyloh Ranch together. Co-Witt and Hey Jack.”

Chad started riding bulls at the age of 14 while in high school. After high school, he went into the Army. When he got out, he got his pro card for bull riding and started working at ranches and riding bulls. He decided he wanted to raise bucking bulls

and started a company. He started with a roping arena that eventually turned into an indoor arena. After acquiring some bulls, Chad and Dale Fultz started hauling the bulls to bull team events. Now they have started Bull Teams Only.

Wyloh Ranch Bucking Bulls regularly enter their own teams in the BTO event. “Our core value is giving back,” observed Jamie. For each event, they enter a bull team in the name of a local charity. Then Wyloh Ranch splits any winnings with that charity. At the last BTO event, the charity was Compass Outdoor Adventures, who provide outdoor experiences for fatherless boys.

“BTO has taken off a lot quicker than I thought it would,” Chad confessed. “We almost booked our last event in two days. I’m getting calls now from all over. Folks want us to bring our event to their town. The sky is the limit. We have a wide-open future. I’m putting together a Board of Directors to see where we go next, and what we need to do to accomplish that.”

Chad and the whole gang at Wyloh Ranch invite you to join them on April 27 in Grandview, Texas for some great bull riding action, great food and Western fellowship, and an amazing live concert featuring country music sensation Josh Ward.

Guiton and Crimber thriving as friends, competitors on the Unleash The Beast

PUEBLO, Colo. – When Clay Guiton made his Unleash The Beast debut in January at the Tractor Supply Co. PBR Chicago, he had just two Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour events and six Touring Pro Division events under his belt. He was still quite an unknown commodity.

One person who did know what he’d be capable of? John Crimber.

The two 18-year-olds have known each other since they were 10 and watching each other’s rides on Instagram. They met that year at the Youth Bull Riders World Finals.

“I remember looking at his videos on Instagram and being like, ‘Dang, this kid’s going this weekend? I’m scared.’ Like, I was actually scared,” Crimber said.

“I have a screenshot,” Guiton said. “Somebody told him he was

going to win, and he said, ‘No, Clay Guiton’s better than me. He’s going to win.’”

“I did say that, but that was back in the day,” Crimber joked. “I ain’t scared.”

Though Crimber was intimidated by Guiton, he plucked up the courage to say hi, and a friendship was born.

Crimber, the son of PBR legend and Florida Freedom head coach Paulo Crimber, was one of the most hyped blue-chip prospects in PBR history. He got his PBR card as soon as he turned 18 and racked up 10 event wins on the Challenger Series and PBR Canada before making his Unleash The Beast debut.

While it took him 10 premier series events to notch his first win – the U.S. Border Patrol PBR Jacksonville at the end of February – he’s still made history as the only rider ever with

Humps-Horns.com · 21 · April 2024

four Top 2 finishes in his first 10 events.

He’s currently ranked No. 2 in the Unleash The Beast World Championship standings.

Guiton made his premier series debut two months after Crimber did as the youngest rider on tour. After being blanked at his first event in Chicago, he’s been a model of consistency ever since.

In fact, Guiton is the only rider ever with six Top 10 finishes in his first seven events, leading a list of riders that includes two-time World Champion Jose Vitor Leme and 2018 World Champion Kaique Pacheco.

“I really didn’t pay attention to that a whole lot,” Guiton said. “Just been kind of trying to stay consistent. But that’s pretty cool to see, to be up there with those names, in front of them. It’s pretty cool, for sure.”

Last weekend at the Ariat PBR Indianapolis, Guiton improved to seven Top 10 finishes in his first 11 events thanks to his ninth-place showing.

“It’s pretty cool to be staying pretty consistent,” he said. “In the past few weeks, I haven’t really been too happy with just staying on one, but we’re still getting in that Top 10 every week.”

In Indianapolis, Guiton went 1-for-3, riding Air Shift for 86.75 points to finish second in Round 1.

“I had to try a little bit,” Guiton said. “He kind of wanted to pull me up over him, but I knew it was a good bull. My buddy Marco Rizzo won a round on him at a Velocity a couple months back, and I was excited to have him, and it worked out good.”

This is part of what has made Guiton so successful – squeezing as many points as possible out of his bulls to place high in rounds. His average ride score is 86.1 points – of riders with at least 10 qualified rides this season, only eight have an average ride score higher than Guiton’s.

While Guiton and Crimber are having historic seasons, neither is leading the Rookie of the Year race. That honor belongs to Cassio Dias, who has won four events this season and is ranked No. 1 in the UTB World Championship standings.

Crimber is No. 2 in the rookie race, but Guiton, ranked No. 17 in the UTB standings, sits at No. 7 in the rookie standings, behind also Julio Cesar Marques, Caden Bunch and Kaiden Loud.

“It’s pretty cool to have one of the best rookie starts ever and still be behind in the rookie race,” Guiton said. “It pushes you to be better, for sure, to be around these guys. Usually, if you’re in the Top 10, you can win the Rookie of the Year, but this year, it’s looking like you might have to win it all to win Rookie of the Year. You can’t let off the gas and just got to keep going.”

He will look to keep it going this weekend at the PBR Milwaukee, presented by Cooper Tires, on March 9-10. Guiton takes on Creek in Round 1, while Crimber faces off against ProVantage Night Stalker. Action begins Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. ET on RidePass on Pluto TV.

“Just keep staying on, staying consistent, and the rest will take care of itself,” Guiton said. “Don’t really try to look long-term. Just take it weekend by weekend and bull by bull, and it’ll work out.”

on and start working on my goals again, which is when the turning point happened for me.

KT: How did your family get you through that tough time?

HM: My three brothers and my amazing mom truly got me through it, and I found that I wanted to do it for them as much as I wanted to do it for myself. The community really came together and supported me in what I was doing as well. I knew I wasn’t alone because they continued to support me and the goals I had set for myself, and they wanted me to be successful.

KT: That is a tough story, but I am sure your dad would be proud of how far you have come since then. With all of that, what is some advice you have for those coming up behind you?

HM: I would say that this is a very humbling sport, and it is important not to get too cocky but also not to get discouraged. You are not going to ride every one. Even the pros don’t ride them all. These bulls are awesome and getting on the right stock at the right time is key in making those transitions. You need to ride the level of bull that fits you because that is going

to help you the most.

KT: We hear that answer from a lot of guys, but it must be something you all have done before?

HM: Oh yeah, we have all tried getting on bigger stuff before we were ready. Everyone wants to see if they can do it.

KT: I am sure that is true. Alright, now for some fun questions, what is your favorite food?

HM: A good steak cooked medium rare.

KT: Favorite movie?

HM: Dukes of Hazzard. I could watch it over and over and not get tired of it.

KT: That is a new answer. We haven’t heard that one before. What about your favorite place you have ridden?

HM: AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

KT: And what color are your chaps and why?

HM: Red and black. I really love those colors together.

KT: Alright Hunter, thank you so much for talking with me and good luck in 2024.

HM: I appreciate y’all interviewing me, thank you!

KT: For more information about junior bull riding, you can check out the National High School Finals Rodeo page or the Yeti Junior World Finals on Facebook. Be sure to look for a new rider featured in our Rider Rundown next month.

one-eyed jack Western Wanderings

I own a cowboy pony, a lean, mean one-eyed hoss And every time I saddle up we fight to see who’s boss

When I step into the stirrup, he jumps to make me fall And usually tries to bite me, he’s a stallion after all

So I use my hat to slap his head and grab a patch of mane Then climb aboard and hold on tight while he just goes insane!

It takes him several minutes to buck and whirl around His only goal at this point is to put me on the ground

But I hang on till he tires out, then nudge him in the side

To let him know I’m still the boss and that it’s time to ride

There was a morning recently, I never will forget He calmly let me saddle him, more like a docile pet

So as I looked him in the eye, I swear he winked at me Then when we took off riding, he ran into a tree!

I picked myself up off the ground, none the worse for wear

But if he keeps on messin’, I’ll sell that horse I swear!

Some horses have a special name, like Thunder, Buck or Mack

But this ornery horse of mine is just my one-eyed Jack
