ompassion, Professionalism and Respect – these are our values, the values that we work toward on a daily basis while delivering the best in care for our patients and families at Humber River Hospital. As you read this edition of PeopleCare, you will see these values in action and the great results they produce for patients and families. As an organization we strive for excellence every day. Sometimes that good work goes unheralded; at other times members of our team are recognized as individuals or groups for their accomplishments. Together we were awarded Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada in April. This is their highest possible standing, earned by our ability to exceed hundreds of rigorous quality and safety standards. Our final score of over 98%, with 100% compliance for Required Organizational Practices, speaks to the quality of care this hospital team delivers daily. Our Laboratory Services team also achieved accreditation excellence, in February receiving a full 4-year certification from the OMA’s Quality Management Program – Laboratory

Services. They received a better than 97% compliance rating. Congratulations! Humber River’s reputation for medical education excellence is growing. We are engaging the next generation of medical professionals to the benefit of everyone – patients, physicians and students alike – and a number of our physicians have received accolades recently from the University of Toronto for their commitment to teaching. Four of our nurses were recently singled out for honours: Lisa Lun received a Leadership Award by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario for her ‘outstanding contributions’ to nursing education; Cheryl Byrnes and Madge Reece were nominated for, and Madge ultimately received, a Nursing Hero Award presented by Hospital News; and Nancy Raponi, Clinical Coordinator for the Finch site Surgical Program, who was nominated for a Toronto Star Nightingale Award. These are exciting and busy times for Humber River; we are one year away from the substantial completion of our new hospital on

May 11, 2015 and there is much to be done before the first patient arrives on October 18, 2015. With the new building, we will be able to deliver enhanced patient and family centered care. We will bring new processes and procedures that will drive greater efficiencies and excellence through our lean, green and digital strategies. The success of our new hospital will depend on all of us working together to implement our new model of care. There will be a greater emphasis on transition planning each day leading up to the big move. Communication will be important to ensure a smooth transition for our patients, their families, our community, staff, physicians and service providers. I commit to you to provide information through PeopleCare, iHumber, RDTV, Open Forums and a number of other avenues. Communication is a two way street. I also need to hear from you, your ideas and your advice, so please drop me an email and let me know what is important to you. Get engaged now to help us ensure a successful transition to our new home.

Humber River Hospital - Hospital News

Medical Education Program Humber River offers the broad educational experience that medical students need, including hands-on experiences with a diverse range of patients and medical issues. Our physicians have embraced the program, delivering a welcoming and compelling learning environment for all medical students. The number of learners in our hospital has grown steadily over the last seven years with our affiliation with the University of Toronto. Dr. Ray Martin, VP, Medical and Academic Affairs, expects the number of Medical Training Days to double by the end of 2015, thanks to our new affiliation agreement with Queen’s University and the opening of our new hospital. This year alone, we are launching three programs with students from Queen’s University. The first one in the Women’s and Children’s Program started in March with one clinical clerk, expanding to three residents in Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Pediatrics in July, followed by two clinical clerks and one resident in our Internal Medicine department in September. Each of these programs will ramp up to include 6-8 residents and 20-24 clinical clerks per year. Josie Xu is one of the first clinical clerks in our Pediatrics program from

Dr. Sonu Gaind

Dr. Narendra Singh and Josie Xu Queen’s University. Josie says that her experience at Humber River has been wonderful. She sees great value in studying in a community hospital. “I am given more learning opportunities and responsibility and the physicians at Humber River are excited to teach. Students get a lot of quality time with physicians.” There are many benefits for us with the expansion of the education program. Having students, residents and fellows in our hospital is intellectually stimulating and their presence leads to enhanced quality of care for our patients. For our staff, these young trainees, with their curiosity and fresh ideas, represent the future of medicine, and it is very satisfying playing a role in their development. Ultimately, we hope that some will choose to stay and practice at Humber.

Congratulations to Dr. Sonu Gaind, who has been named as Humber River’s new Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director of our Mental Health Program. Dr. Gaind has worked in various clinical, academic and administrative roles within the mental healthcare system, with a particular interest in enhancing the coordination between existing services to improve care delivery for those patients facing mental health issues. He will work with his colleagues at the hospital and with our community partners to further improve our strong Mental Health Program.

Included in this will be carrying on the ground-breaking work begun at Humber by his predecessor, Dr. George Awad, to educate the public on the stigmas too often associated with mental health patients and their care. “I’m thrilled to be joining Humber at this exciting time. The public interest in mental health issues has never been higher, and our program is looking forward to integrating with the rest of medicine as we move into our modern new facility.” Dr. Sonu Gaind

Madge Reece Congratulations to Madge Reece, RPN, in our inpatient adult mental health unit, for being named as the 3rd place winner in the Nursing Week 2014 Nursing Hero Awards sponsored by Hospital News. Madge received six nominations for the Nursing Hero Award, all of them from a patient or a patient’s family member. Here are some excerpts from those letters of nomination: From Marsha Taylor: “I like how she treats people with the respect and inherent dignity they deserve. She’s approachable in her manner and her presence.”

Marigrace Galura wrote that “Madge had kind words that showed me compassion. When I started to show signs of health improvement, I could tell that Madge was sincerely happy for me. She had said things to me that uplifted my spirits. I noticed that on the floor her patients were getting the best care possible.” And Charmaine talked about how “she put a smile back on my face, when I thought all was lost. Madge is my hero and gave me my second chance at life. I thank her for guiding me to the right path of recovery. Madge, you are a blessing to all your patients and me.”

Madge Patients recognize her committment to Humber’s values of Compassion, Professionalism and Respect.

Lisa Lun Congratulations to Lisa Lun, Clinical Coordinator–Special Projects in our Cancer Care Program on winning the Leadership Award in Nursing Education Staff Development by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario. Among her many accomplishments, Lisa has been instrumental in raising the bar for oncology education here at Humber River and she has helped guide the hospital toward a successful implementation of an integrated cancer care program across the organization. As the Nursing Lead for the Regional Systemic Therapy Program for the Central LHIN, she organized the first Oncology Nursing Clinical Day, held in April, with a focus on cancer care quality and safety in nursing practice. She has also been a mentor to many nurses completing their postgraduate practicum courses, volunteering her time and expertise.

Lisa

Lisa gives her best to her colleagues and to patients, using not only her extensive skill base but also her personal warmth and compassion. This award acknowledges the tireless effort behind all of Lisa’s accomplishments. We are all proud to have her on the Humber River team.

Redevelopment

Our New Hospital - Opening October 18, 2015

New Hospital’s Primary Colour: Green Our organization is committed to environmental sustainability and resource protection. The new Humber River Hospital will be a green building and campus, incorporating the latest in environmental sustainability concepts. Being green was a planning priority from Day One, with a goal of achieving LEED Silver certification and meeting the Tier 1 requirements of Toronto’s Green Standard. With construction now less than one year from substantial completion on May 11, 2015, the hospital will not only reach both targets, but is confidently looking to reach LEED Gold certification. An emphasis on natural lighting use, reflective and green roofing, and other strategies to minimize solar heat gain is expected to reduce energy usage over the ASHRAE model for similarly sized and type of facility by as much as 50%. As the walls went up, PCL has been working with recycled and locally sourced building materials. And 75% of construction waste has been diverted from landfill. The installation of low-flush toilets, faucets, showers and irrigation cisterns will reduce the use of water by 35% compared to the current facilities. In addition, patients will benefit from improved building air quality with the use of 100% fresh air and low Volatile Organic Compound emission finishes throughout. The campus will feature native, drought-resistant plants in a landscaped area intended to promote healthy physical activity. Staff will be encouraged to take advantage of alternative means of transportation through the hospital’s partnership with Smart Commute Toronto, with available bicycle parking & showers, as well as electrical vehicle charging stations. Thanks to our green approach, the new Humber River Hospital will help reduce CO2 by roughly 20,000 tons annually. That’s the same as taking about 4,000 cars off the road.

Engaging our community On April 24th, Humber River Hospital co-hosted a public redevelopment update meeting with Laura Albanese, the MPP for York South-Weston, in the Keele Auditorium. Over 60 guests from the community attended to hear Hospital President & CEO Rueben Devlin provide a report on the progress of our redevelopment project, followed by a question and answer session with Rueben, COO and Project Lead Barb Collins, and Ms. Albanese. Local City Councillors Frances Nunziata and Frank DiGiorgio were there as well and participated in the discussions. Following the main agenda, guests were invited to join Rueben, Barb, our VP of Patient Services Scott Jarrett and VP of Medical and Academic Affairs Dr. Ray Martin for a tour of the Keele site mockup rooms.

Transition Planning 529

days until moving day

[16:42:25]

October 18, 2015

Human Resources Global Team To ensure a successful move to our new hospital for our staff, physicians and volunteers, we must have a plan that allows for moving day itself to go well for patients and families. Equally important, that plan must ensure that our staff and physicians are positioned to succeed from the first minute they walk into the new building. Humber River Hospital’s Transition Plan consists of 4 key components: Operational Readiness; Facility Activation; Patient Transfer Plan; and the Move Plan/Sequence for each legacy site. Across the organization, our various Transition Leadership and Planning Teams are hard at work on all four parts of the Plan. Many members of the hospital team are directly involved in one or more of these teams: for everyone at Humber our internal website, iHumber, has a section dedicated to all things Transition http://ihumber/transition/Pages/w elcome.aspx.

Our new building is designed to complement the local streetscape, and to fit into the neighborhood in a meaningful way. The most visible architectural element, located along the north and south exposures, is our Graphic Art Glass: Aspen Grove. Throughout time Aspen Groves have been embraced by many cultures as symbols of unity and of strength through diversity. This installation celebrates our connection with our patients, our community and each other: each diverse member a part of the larger entity, joined together for the benefit of all. A plaque will be placed in the new hospital to briefly illustrate the meaning behind Aspen Grove.

Carmen Alcalde

Library Technician, Patient and Family Resource Centre

Much of her time is spent keeping the external website up to date with the latest reliable health information for patients and families. In order to serve our ethnically diverse population, there are over 100 Patient Education Publications in six languages and access to multilingual resources in 27 languages. She enjoys the evolution of the delivery of this information as she continually develops her skills in order to provide new services. Carmen has recently completed training as a Spanish interpreter. Carmen takes joy in working with our patients and members of the public in our Patient and Family Resource Centres at all three sites. Helping them get answers to their health information questions, providing materials and A/V rentals, and support aids like hearing devices to help patients communicate with their doctors and their families are just some of the ways Carmen supports our work to deliver patient and family-centred care.

Carmen has dedicated the past ten years at Humber River to serving patients and staff in medical and health information and education.

In her own time, Carmen takes great joy in sculpting – she crafts 1-2 pieces a year in various mediums such as clay and metal; for her, it’s what feeds her soul.

Mike has built his career at Humber River over the last 14 years. Starting in Security, his role expanded first to include Emergency Preparedness and then he took on responsibility for parking which grew into Traffic Demand Management. He has enjoyed each of these new challenges and developing the strategies for each area for our new hospital.

Mike Orrico

Director, Emergency Preparedness, Traffic Demand Management, Security

In 2010, we partnered with Smart Commute Toronto, a program that helps coordinate carpooling with the goal to improve air quality while making everyone’s commute less expensive and more enjoyable. Humber River is a designated Smart Commute Workplace because of our employees’ involvement in initiatives like Carpool Zone, the Clean Air Commute and the annual Bike to Work Challenge; this year’s challenge was on May 26. Mike is working with our transition planning team and some of our community partners to develop similar traffic demand management strategies for our new hospital site. He is also leading the development of the Emergency Code Response procedures for our new hospital. This includes how we will respond to emergency situations within the hospital, such as a

fire, and to external emergencies in the community. Mike enjoys playing hockey and recently joined a cycling club, which often takes him on day-long rides from Lake Ontario all the way up to Stouffiville.

Humber River Hospital - Foundation Update

Plan Group Plan Group is helping Humber River Hospital reinvent patient care by being a building partner, a donor and a supportive member of the community. As a project partner, Plan Group is coordinating the installation of the data communications and electrical systems needed to support our ICAT infrastructure. As a donor, Plan Group committed $250,000 to the hospital Foundation. But CEO Bill Kurtin wanted to do more than just donate. He says “we didn’t just want to hand over a cheque.” Since Plan Group has an interest in helping at-risk youth, they partnered with Humber River to launch our first corporate volunteer program with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit. Three nights a week, three volunteers from a group of 14 Plan Group employees socialize and play with the kids staying in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit. During that time, the kids aren’t thinking about their treatment or being in the hospital. They’re just focused on having fun with the volunteers from Plan Group.

Plan Group Employees Doris Galas, Clinical Manager in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program, says “The experience has been absolutely wonderful. We are grateful to have people taking the time to come and spend quality time with the kids, and making their time here more meaningful.” The Plan Group volunteers all agree that their visits are amazing experiences for them. Our patients say the same!

100% Club Welcome to the club! HRH Foundation is proud to announce that three departments within the hospital have achieved 100% participation in physician giving. Thank you to the physicians in the departments of Psychiatry, General Surgery and Pediatrics for your generous commitment and support of our new hospital campaign. Congratulations and thank you to each department:

“I am proud that the physicians in the Department of Psychiatry are among the first to have 100% commitment in support of our Foundation. We are excited about this year’s campaign as it gets us closer to the move to our new hospital and new and innovative model of care.” Dr. George Awad Former Chief, Psychiatry

Dr. Awad

“All of our physicians in General Surgery are happy to support the new Humber River. Our desire to give back is very strong, but our time is limited, so we give back financially by contributing our teaching stipends. Giving to Humber is especially meaningful because we have a direct view of what is being done with the donated funds.” Dr. Laz Klein Head, General Surgery

Dr. Klein

Dr. Singh

“Our Pediatric physicians are longtime members of the Humber family. Our support of the campaign for our new hospital allows us to put something back into our hospital and sends a very strong message – we believe in Humber. I am proud that our Department has answered the call to give back.” Dr. Narendra Singh Chief, Pediatrics

Humber River Hospital Student Alliances

York University and the University of Toronto have each launched a Student Alliance school club with Humber River to strengthen the relationship between students and Humber River Hospital. Their goal is to enrich the lives of the student body while raising awareness and funds for the hospital and our Volunteer Association through social and academic events. In their first year, the two university clubs raised close to $2000 through fundraising events such as fashion shows, samosa and bake sales, and pub nights. Recruitment has grown to over 300 club members.

Superb Student Volunteer “Student volunteers play an important role in our HR strategic plan to engage youth and have them ‘grow up’ with Humber River Hospital. They may start volunteering in high school to fulfil their Community Service hours and often they continue volunteering throughout their academic career. The students are a passionate and energetic group who are committed to promoting Humber River on campus and in the community” Louisa Ceci, Manager, Volunteer Services.

Kristina Loudine is a dedicated Humber River volunteer in her second year in Pre-Med at York University. She has volunteered for over three years in the Church site Dialysis Unit and has taken an active role in the Student Volunteer Program. She engages youth volunteers at Humber River by organizing social activities with the goal to ensure they feel connected to the hospital, feel welcomed and comfortable, and to build retention with the youth. She will continue her efforts by working with the Summer Student Program Coordinator this year to engage and mentor youth who are new to the hospital. Kristina was the recipient of the 2012 Volunteer Association Scholarship as the Student Volunteer and she is giving back to this program as a member of this year’s scholarship selection committee.
