OUR INCREDIBLE JOURNEY CONTINUES After the extraordinary start of Hull 2017’s opening season, Made in Hull, where this city proudly left the world in no doubt of its vibrant past and confident future, we continue with our second chapter, Roots & Routes. Here, we’ll explore Hull’s unique place as a gateway to Europe and one of the world’s busiest ports: its maritime history and global connections; the arrivals and departures that create stories of the city. Through a rich three months of events, we’ll underline the contribution of the brilliant people and ideas travelling in and out of Hull, continuing the precedent set at the start of the year: some elements instantly accessible and familiar, others that surprise, challenge and defy expectation.

In Roots & Routes, we’ll celebrate international links from Rotterdam to Reykjavik, creating a natural progression to our third season, Freedom, where we’ll explore the city’s pivotal role in the emancipation movement and the links established with its twin city of Freetown, Sierra Leone. THE TRAIN TRACK AND THE BASKET

BY CLAIRE BARBER Between 1848 and 1914, more than two million people arrived into Hull by ship from mainland Europe, and left by train to the transatlantic ports of Liverpool and Southampton, seeking new lives in the New World. This mass movement of people, many of whom were in Hull for just a few hours, ended abruptly with the outbreak of the First World War.

Claire Barber’s installation at Hull’s Paragon Station, part of the Look Up programme, explores the phenomenon of ‘transmigration’, and the notion that skills and belongings traverse transport routes alongside people. “My work is partly inspired by social narrative painting made at the time of transmigration, which captures loss, lament and excitement at a new beginning.

“It’s also drawn from personal travelling experiences, through Outer Mongolia, Australia, New Zealand and Iceland, and particularly the idea of looking at what people take with them on a journey, both as luggage and in terms of their culture and craft skill. “The transmigrants carried large woven baskets on their journey through Hull, and brought skills such as double cloth weaving, while absorbing the skills of others.

They adapted their techniques to the materials available to them in a new country. “The train station today, with its constant movement of people, continues to mirror the weaving process: the action of double weaving, layers crossing over layers, countless patterns created every time people enter and exit. As individuals weave in and out, carrying luggage that reflects who they are, they too add and take new influences in an ever-changing space.”

During seasons two and three, Look Up will commission works in shopping centres, car parks, streets and public squares, by artists including Bob & Roberta Smith (see our Freedom season guide), Tania Kovats, Chris Dobrowolski and Claire Morgan. Two of these are co-commissions with The Deep. Chris Dobrowolski’s work (March to May) will look at environmental concerns around plastics and our oceans. And in August, Tania Kovats, working closely with The Deep’s staff, will create a large scale sculptural work, BLEACHED, which responds to the beauty of coral and its fragile position in the ecosystem.

Music by Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen, guitarist Eivind Aarset and electronic wizard Jan Bang gives way to the vast sound of the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North; threaded through with the deep music of the Bridge itself, captured by Hull based sound artist Jez riley French.

Evoking both the long history of sea travel from Hull, and the Bridge as a powerful symbol of home, The Height of the Reeds is an unforgettable experience in sound.

Six choirs from both banks of the Humber will come together at Hull City Hall to perform an exciting choral, orchestral and visually stimulating concert, celebrating our region’s proud maritime heritage.

Celebrate the opening weekend with us, with a few extra treats and surprises along the way.

They will perform Bridge for the Living by Anthony Hedges and A Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams. Tides turn. Seasons change. The Humber keeps on singing. Part of the Creative Communities Programme.

MASTERPIECES IN FOCUS FROM THE ROYAL COLLECTION: REMBRANDT A partnership with the Royal Collection Trust brings a Rembrandt painting to Hull for the very first time. The Ship Builder and his Wife is the one of five exceptional loans agreed for the Ferens between 2017 and 2021, complementing

Hull’s maritime heritage and the Gallery’s strength in Dutch 17th century art. Rembrandt’s portrayal of a Dutch couple was painted in 1633, during the height of his success as a portrait painter.

Exploring sea-related themes, including monster myths, local fishing communities, Hull’s role as a maritime city and the implications of climate change, Offshore includes ambitious new art commissions that relate to the museums’ collections.

Spencer Tunick’s 2016 Sea of Hull - which invited thousands of people to be photographed naked, and captured headlines around the world - is revealed for the very first time as part of this major new exhibition, exploring how we see ourselves and how artists have depicted the nude in modern times.

Skin will also feature striking sculptures of human figures by Ron Mueck, drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection of modern and contemporary art, and nudes by iconic British painter Lucian Freud, alongside highlights from Hull’s permanent collection.

Whether you’re a budding or established musician, or just someone who has always fancied getting their hands around a microphone or trying an instrument, the Albemarle - together with the Hull Music Hub and many special guests – is ready to unlock your potential.

Across the city, Hull is getting creative. 60 transformational projects, selected and funded by the Creative Communities Programme, are ready to welcome audiences in neighbourhoods city-wide. So take a trip and explore them this spring. Look up to see a hand-made, fullscale replica of Amy Johnson’s legendary Gipsy Moth, a new city centre installation created by HMP Hull and artist Leonard J Brown. Over at Scrapstore, off Hessle Road, Re-Made In Hull has created a replica factory, where you can join the production line and take part in a series of craft workshops. 12

On your way, catch Red Gallery’s Redboard commissions on billboards, as well as Terrace Enders, two new Hessle Road murals that pay tribute to Hull’s fishing heritage. Heading east, you’ll find No Twaddle’s Pop-Up Playhouse: Hansel and Gretel in a shop on Holderness Road, while on Greatfield Estate, Garry .co.uk

Burnett and Rupert Creed celebrate one of Hull’s greatest musical heroes, Mick Ronson, in Turn and Face the Strange. The Creative Communities Programme is funded by Hull 2017 and the Big Lottery Fund.

FOUNTAIN Art and industry combine to mark the 100 year anniversary of Marcel Duchamp’s controversial Fountain and 200 years of British ceramic manufacturers, Armitage Shanks. Led by Hull School of Art and Design, Ideal Standard UK and Hull’s arts community, Fountain17 has commissioned artists to produce works inspired by Duchamp’s most notorious ‘Readymades’. Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble, author and poet Lemn Sissay MBE, sculptor and HSAD alumnus Neville Gabie and many others will exhibit, with work by local schools, community and prison groups also featured.

In Hull, Weeping Window will be installed at the Maritime Museum, formerly the Dock Offices, which witnessed many of the defining events of the First World War in Hull.

BBC Radio 3 takes up residence at Hull Truck Theatre for a three-day festival celebrating the city’s rich folk heritage and our international links.

The sculpture is touring the UK as part of 14-18 NOW, the arts programme for the First World War Centenary.

In May, the Doc’n Roll Film Festival rolls into town, with a lineup of alternative, under-the-radar premiere music documentary films that showcase the spirit, determination and madness it takes to make it in the music industry.

Presented by Hull Independent Cinema, the end of June brings the return of Hull Film Festival, now in its fourth year, which promises films that are award-winning, critically acclaimed, unashamedly independent and a little left-field.

Profiling artists from folk, punk, pop, indie, rock, jazz and electronic, the films will be accompanied by a host of Q&As with filmmakers, providing further insight into what drives them.

Expect archive documentaries, world cinema, cult gems, shorts, local film, animation, much-loved classics, festival exclusives and more.

SOMEWHERE BECOMING SEA In this exhibition of international artists’ work with the moving image, we take a closer look at the ever-changing boundaries between land and sea, exploring Hull’s longstanding prominence as a gateway to the North Sea and beyond.

Featuring artists including Lavinia Greenlaw, Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen, Simon Faithfull and Cecilia Stenbom, Somewhere Becoming Sea reflects how expanses of water that divide countries are also channels that connect them.

At a time when climate change threatens to blur boundaries further and bring far-reaching economic impact, the exhibition captures the sea’s elemental power and asks: is everywhere now Somewhere Becoming Sea?

RICHARD III England is in the midst of the Wars of the Roses when Richard, Duke of Gloucester, sees a chance for the crown. As the death toll mounts, Richard seizes the throne, but at what cost? ARTWAVES The ArtWaves visual arts festival returns to Bridlington Spa this May, showcasing traditional, digital, contemporary and urban art through an exciting programme of workshops, exhibitions, talks, installations and more.

Featuring an Open Exhibition (which is accepting entries until 20 April) on the theme of culture, the festival is expected to attract visitors from far and wide.

THE EXTRAORDINARY ORCHARD PARK PARADE An extraordinary parade filled with moving creations and characters will take to the streets of the Orchard Park estate. Creatures on wheels, walkers on stilts, giant puppets, bands, and hundreds of handmade costumes created by Orchard Park residents will bring colour and music to the streets. This project is led by Handmade Parade in a unique collaboration with Hull Carnival Arts and Rag and Bone.

Artists from all three companies will embark on a monthlong residency at St Michael’s Youth Centre throughout April, delivering free creative workshops to produce costumes and artworks that will feature in the procession. The workshops are open to all, no experience required – come and get involved!

Traditional customs from Hanseatic countries will be celebrated with food, dance, song, storytelling and craft.

In the mid-13th century, Hull was one of several cities across Northern Europe associated with the Hanseatic League medieval trading network. Hull will be celebrating these Hanseatic links with the sights, sounds and smells of a medieval market place, as the Old Town is transformed into a fully interactive play.

Taking over the cemetery, circus artists will dance above your head, surprising you with extraordinary feats of physicality as they guide you through the space between life and death in this astonishing visual feast.

Led by Yaron Lifschitz, creator of some of the most highly innovative and genre-defying circus in the world, with a creative team including the electronic musician Lapalux, Depart brings together acrobats, aerialists, local community choirs and video artists for an experience like no other.

There’s a buzz in the air once more as Back To Ours – a series of festivals at the heart of Hull’s communities – returns, following its successful debut run in February.

Back To Ours brings awardwinning shows to every corner of Hull and transforms venues, from schools to shopping centres and community centres, into electrifying entertainment hotspots.

This season, expect more of the same – and then some. Tales that will bring a tear to the eye; jokes to make your belly hurt; musical moments to remember forever.

The first instalment of the festival series began in our first season with a jam-packed programme of comedy, music, theatre, cabaret and ﬁlm.

Venues from east to west hosted a hugely eclectic variety of shows, including award-winning kids’ theatre courtesy of international touring company Shake Shake, two storming sets by indie stars The Pigeon Detectives and an all-new family film festival, Picture House.

BBC RADIO : BIG WEEKEND AND ACADEMY Age 16-19 and live in Hull? A phenomenal opportunity awaits… Before Radio 1’s Big Weekend Europe’s largest free ticketed event - lands in the city on 27 and 28 May with some of the planet’s biggest and newest artists, Radio 1 and BBC Learning will produce Radio 1’s Academy which aims to inspire 16-19 yearolds in Hull to take the next step in their creative careers. Radio 1’s Academy will include a series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activity in the area. Influential figures from the creative industries will deliver exclusive, hands on workshops, live music

performances and industry insight, giving 16-19 year olds in Hull the tools, contacts and information they need to pursue their chosen career.

Here’s just a taster of the activity taking place this spring: MUSIC BBC Radio 1’s iconic Live Lounge will transmit from the Academy, while BBC Introducing gigs will provide a platform for local bands and artists. Stars from across the musical genres will host Q&As and practical workshops that will see attendees learn song writing and performance techniques from the best in the business.

RADIO Radio 1 DJs will deliver personal insights into their careers, and attendees will be given the chance to quiz both DJs and Radio 1 bosses about what goes on behind the scenes at the station.

TELEVISION & FILM Academy attendees will be able to ask those at the very top of the TV and film industries about their careers. Actors, writers, directors, producers and camera operators will all share their insider secrets and top tips on how to get ahead.

The Academy will also see industry leaders and celebrities from the world of social media, business, technology, and design come through the doors offering attendees further bespoke learning opportunities.

In Hull, in partnership with Hull 2017, acclaimed writers Russ Litten, Christina Lewis, Lee Harrison, Peter Knaggs and Kerry Drewery have been delivering engaging residencies

as after-school workshops at five schools since September 2016: Newland School for Girls, Sirius Academy West, Sirius Academy North, St Mary’s College and Winifred Holtby Academy. The students are hard at work on anthologies of poetry and prose to be launched in June, reflecting a city at the start of a new chapter.

Strictly unmissable, Hullzapoppin 2017 is a city-wide celebration of World Lindy Hop Day. Harnessing the unique magic and nostalgia of swing dance, international guests from Hull’s sister cities of Aarhus, Rotterdam, Reykjavik and Szczecin will perform energetic, jazz-inspired numbers with Harlem roots.

THE HESSLE ROADERS: HULL’S FISHING COMMUNITY BY DR ALEC GILL MBE Hessle Roaders lived both a magic and tragic life, their community spirit linked with the perilous work of trawling Arctic waters. In 1971, with his Rolleicord camera around his neck, Alec Gill began to photograph the community.

His pictures captured children playing on the streets, neighbours gossiping in the terraces and life at sea on board a trawler. Taken over a period of thirty years, the exhibition features a selection from over 6,600 striking images, documenting a close-knit community during a time of dramatic social change.

CASTING ON HUMBER Led by artist Sarah Louise Davies drawing on pioneering community ParkBench, this collaboration between two social inclusion charities, The Sobriety Project and Castaway Goole Accessible Music Theatre, brings a brand new production by experienced learning disabled actors, performed on board the Humber keel barge Sobriety. In a struggling pub on one of Hull’s toughest streets, ex-pro boxer Taylor Flint runs a women’s boxercise class. For Lauren, Jazz, Aneta and Grace, the class is much more than a way to lose weight and have a laugh – they’re fighting the grinding challenges of everyday life.

When the pub is threatened with closure, the women agree to be part of an unlicensed fight night to raise money and rally the community. They’re ready to prove themselves in a world that shows them little respect, but Taylor knows that once the gloves are on, the real test will be going toe to toe with friends and neighbours.
