Welcome to another fantastic season of film at Hull Independent Cinema. We present the latest new-release drama, animation, documentary and more, from countries including Germany, France and Italy alongside the best Englishlanguage offerings from the UK, USA and Canada. We’re very proud this season to be hosting a week-long run of Hull film-maker Sean McAllister’s new documentary A Northern Soul, which takes a new perspective on our city’s year in the limelight as UK City of Culture. These are the first screenings of the film anywhere since its critically-acclaimed debut as the opening film at this year’s prestigious Sheffield Doc/Fest. Once more we’re delighted to welcome back to Hull the ever-popular Yorkshire Silents, bringing silent film to life with live improvised music, and of course our friends at WeWatchFilms and Cult Cinema Sunday bring their usual fantastic selection of cult movies and classics back on the big screen. You won’t find these films anywhere else, so why not join us to Discover Something Different?

PANDORA’S BOX The 1929 silent film with live score

Fri 21 September, 7.00pm Hull Truck Theatre

One of the great silent films, GW Pabst’s Pandora’s Box is renowned for its sensational storyline, sparkling Weimar-period setting and the legendary, lead performance from its iconic star Louise Brooks. Following the rise and fall of Lulu (Brooks), a spirited but innocent showgirl whose sheer sexual magnetism wreaks havoc on the lives of men and women alike, the film was controversial in its day, then underappreciated for decades. Pandora’s Box now stands as an incredibly modern movie, and few stars of any era dazzle as bright as Louise Brooks. New 2K DCP of the 2009 restoration of Munich Film Museum’s definitive cut. Live, improvised piano accompaniment by Jonny Best Directed by GW Pabst Germany | 1929 | 136 min Language: Silent (German title cards with English subtitles) Cast: Louise Brooks, Fritz Kortner, Francis Lederer
