Estefani Armendariz

Ulises Armendariz Maria and Jose Armendariz welcomed Ulises into the world July 31, 1996 in Mexico City. His plans for next year are to attend college and, beyond that, to find a good job, and eventually start a family. Throughout his time in high school, Ulises was quite active in sports, citing that being able to play sports was the greatest impact on his life. He learned life is not always going to be easy, but that doesn’t mean a person should give up. He remembers all the sporting events and activities he was involved with and seeing his friends, especially his best friend Manuel Mendez, everyday, as well as his favorite teacher Nick Rodriguez. Like any other person, Ulises has his favorites such as rap, hip hop and Spanish music, along with his favorite song “Bedrock”. The book that he calls his favorite is “A Child Called It”, but also enjoys the movie “Instructions Not Included”. When asked whom he admired the most, Ulises said “My parents for all of the sacrifices they have had to make to get me to where I’m at. Also, because they are my biggest fans.”

August 1, 1996 in Mexico City, Rosa and Julio Armendariz welcomed their daughter, Estefani Guadalupe Armendariz, into the world. They remain the people whom Estefani admires the most because they are always there for her and she “just loves them”. Of course she will be sad to leave her parents and her niece whom she loves spending time with as she attends college next year. In the future, she hopes to graduate from college with a degree in Counseling Psychology, and return to help her parents. As she moves into the real world, Estefani would most like to visit the beautiful Bora Bora in the French Polynesia based on the pictures she has seen. Throughout her life, Estefani developed many favorites including her favorite book “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green, the movie “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor”, and her favorite music is “anything but country”. In high school, her favorite teachers were Coach O, Coach Rod, and Mrs. Rawlings. The event that had the greatest impact in her life was winning Sub-State in basketball because of the hard work put into working toward that. As her time at Hugoton High School comes to an end, Estefani would “not change anything [about her time here], because every step of the way was a lesson, and it made me the person I am today.”

Michael Baeza January 17, 1997, Michael Gabriel Baeza was born to Carrie and Gabriel in Colorado Springs. Next year, Michael plans to attend McPherson College to earn his degree in physical therapy. Beyond that, he would like to visit Italy because he always wanted to go there. When he isn’t playing his favorite sports - football and baseball - Michael likes to listen to country music, and in particular, his favorite song “That’s My Kind of Night” by Luke Bryan. When music becomes boring, he likes to watch “Frozen” or read his favorite book, “Allegiant” by Veronica Roth. Michael wouldn’t change anything about his high school experience, though what impacted him the most was finally realizing what he wanted to do after high school. The person he admires the most is his grandfather because he sacrifices so much for Michael.

Congratulations Graduates! Your future is awaiting you.

Mariah Archuleta Mariah Archuleta was born in Liberal February 18, 1997 to Alex and Candee Archuleta. After she graduates, Mariah plans to attend college, and she is excited to start new chapters in her life. Those chapters include earning her nursing degree, marrying a die-hard KU fan, and eventually living in the mountains. One place she would like to visit eventually is Alaska because of the Northern Lights, and, of course, for the tax-free shopping. Her favorite song is “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5, and her favorite movie is “The Last Song”. The people she admires the most are her grandparents, Dennis and Kathy. They are an example of what unconditional love is, and they are always there to help family and friends. Throughout her high school career, Mariah fondly remembers friends, teachers - especially her favorite, Mrs. Rawlings, and the successes, as well as the hardships. If she could change any aspect of her high school career it would be to soak everything in and truly enjoy the time she had with friends and classmates.

Monica Bustillos Monica Bustillos was born March 26, 1997 in Liberal. Her parents are Ignacio and Lorena Bustillos. Monica’s plans for next year are to attend college to pursue her nursing degree and her future plans include becoming a nurse anesthetist. Monica’s favorite book is “The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold. Her favorite song is “Sure Be Cool If You Did” by Blake Shelton and her favorite type of music is Country or Spanish. Monica’s favorite movie is “Matilda”. Her favorite teachers are Mrs. Fann and Miss Lacy. Monica would like to visit Europe because it seems like such a beautiful place. She admires her parents because they work so hard for their children and never complain. The fondest memories Monica has of high school are the conversations with Mrs. Fann. She also remembers when Mr. Cornelsen would make fun of her and give her a hard time during softball. When asked what she would change about her high school career, Monica responded she would like to have been more involved and not stress out. Some events that happened in high school that had the greatest impact on her life were losing her 4.0 GPA and getting closer to her best friend, which would impact anyone.

They always see the best in everything and everyone and are just amazing people over all. Some memories Kimberly treasures include the school years with her cousins Elizabeth and Melissa and her brother Isai. Something she wished she did to change her career in high school would be to get more involved throughout all four years. Odalys Jacqueline Castaneda was born March 31, 1996 in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. Her parents are Antonio Castaneda and Estela Camacho. Her plan for next year is to have her own home with her family and to be enrolled in nursing school. Her favorite song is “Te Metiste” by Ariel Camacho and her favorite types of music are Banda, Corridos and Nortenas. Odalys’ favorite teachers are Coach Rod and Mrs. Fann. A place she would like to visit is Dubai because it is luxurious. She admires her parents because “. . .They left their families to give us a better future. They have always been there for me.” Odalys’s fondest memories are messing around with her friends and classmates in school. She also remembers all the events she attended and playing basketball. Things Odalys would like to change about her high school career would be playing sports all four years, studying harder and also taking things slow because she thought high school zipped by. When asked the question, “What event happened in high school that had the greatest impact on your life?” Odalys replied, “I learned a lot of life lessons during my four years; not to hurry and grow up because you can never get those years back.”

Sayra Edit Chavez was born September 12, 1996 in Liberal. Sayra’s parents are Silvino and Tina Chavez. Her future plans are to attend Seward County Community College, get her CNA and become a medical assistant. One of her favorite books is “Thirteen Reasons Why” by Jay Asher. Her favorite song is “Amazing Grace” by Chris Tomlin and her favorite type of music is “any kind as long as I can jam out to it”. One of her most favorite movies is “Heaven is For Real”. Sayra’s favorite teachers include Mrs. Gaskill, Mrs. Snyder, and Mr. and Mrs. Waters. She would enjoy visiting Jerusalem because it’s a holy and peaceful destination, and she would also like to go to see the Dead Sea. Her sister Adriana is someone Sayra really admires because she is someone she can trust and could talk to when necessary. Sayra doesn’t just consider Adriana her sister, but also her best friend, and Sayra feels very blessed to have Adriana in her life. One of the most memorable experiences in Sayra’s high school years was when she and her weight class did the Harlem Shake with Coach Szymczak. . .and it was a complete fail! What Sayra would like to change in her high school career would be to be more involved and take her classes more seriously. Sayra said, “The greatest impact was when all the teachers would motivate me to try my hardest in my classes and remind me that the senior year was just around the corner.”

Kristan Crawford Born to Mark and Keri Crawford, Kristan made her bright appearance in the world starting in Wichita April 2, 1998. Kristan’s dreams extend beyond Kansas after she attends Kansas State University and becomes a nutrition major. The place she would like to visit is the remote and beautiful land of New Zealand. During her time in Kansas, Kristan has developed some favorites. Her favorite music comes from the 40s and 50s, so it is no surprise that her favorite movie is the oldie “Singing in the Rain”. Keeping with the throwback theme, she enjoys listening to jazz-like compositions of Josh Groban and Elvis Presley. Though she appreciates times gone by, her favorite song “(Fight the) Demons” is by the London rock group, Dry the River. Although she is graduating a year early, Kristan has some fond memories of her time at HHS such as the time she broke a light with a frisbee. The only thing she would like to change about her time in high school would be to take choir for one more year. If she could give advice to people in lower grades, Kristan would remind them, “. . .in order to pass tests, listening is key”. Finally, the person whom Kristan admires the most is Walt Disney because he was an imaginative genius.

Thursday, May 14, 2015

In Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, February 18, 1997 Salvador Valles was born to Salvador and Antelma Valles. Salvador is a kid who likes to listen to any kind of music, but particularly appreciates Wiz Khalifa’s song “Promises”. Additionally, he likes to watch movies such as “Warrior” or “The Sandlot”. If he had time to read a book, “Five Seasons” by Roger Angell is one he would choose. Next year, Salvador plans to attend a community college and minor in diesel, then eventually transfer to a four year university where he would major in either geology or education. In the future, he believes he would like to visit Europe. His high school years have been busy with playing sports which have impacted him the most in life because “you learn to work as a team”. He wouldn’t change any part of his high school years and will fondly remember all the activities in which he and his classmates participated. Though Mr. Rodriguez is his favorite teacher, the people he admires the most are his parents because they have been able to go through life even when they had hard times.

Zoie Evans Zoie Star Evans was born August 15, 1996 in Liberal. Her parents are Patrick and Heather Ketchum and Pamela Evans. Next year, Zoie would like to attend Fort Scott Community College to take basic classes before transferring to Fort Hays State University. In the future, she would like to move to either Hamburg, Germany and have a stable job as a massage therapist or translator. If Germany doesn’t work out, then she would prefer to live in Stockholm, Sweden. Because of her love of the German culture, it is no wonder she wants to visit St. Cologne Cathedral in Germany because of the architecture and how simply beautiful the building is. Throughout her life, Zoie has acquired many favorites. Her favorite music is a mixture of metal, rock, classical, and electronica with her favorite song being “Skies Over Europe” by Europeans. One wouldn’t be shocked to learn the Grimm Brother’s folklore is counted among her favorite books along with “Neverwhere” by Neil Guymon. “Frozen”, “Rush Hour 2”, “The Matrix”, and “The Incredibles” are some of her favorite movies. School has made an impact on Zoie and especially her freshman year Spanish teacher from Texas, Mrs. Delgado. The reason she calls Mrs. Delgado her favorite teacher is because she could make Zoie laugh even when she spoke horrible Spanish. “What got me [about her] was when she said I was innocent and sweet. I learned a lot from her.” An event she will remember most about high school is that it can be a very scary place to actually talk or be yourself because people can judge for the most simple things. When asked what she would change about high school, Zoie said she wishes she could have taken Algebra 2 so she could take Physics as well as Chemistry. However, she did enjoy attending prom because it was fun and lively. Zoie admires her dad the most because he can keep a level head in most any sense, and he has always been her hero.

Camila Flores Camila Jocelyn Gonzalez Flores was born October 23, 1996. Camilla was born in San Luis Potosi, S.L.P. Mexico to Adriana Flores. Camila plans to attend Seward County Community College, study in the medical field and work up to being an RN. Camila’s future plans are to work in the medical field, save up money, get married and later expand her family. Camila’s favorite books are “Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, “Looking for Alaska” by John Green, and “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” by Ned Vizzini. Camila doesn’t have a favorite song, because she listens to anything she can jam out to! Camila’s favorite movies are “Fast & Furious” and “21 Jump Street” and “22 Jump Street”. Camila’s favorite teacher is Mrs. O’Loughlin, for always believing in her, even when times got hard, and for motivating her to do her best and not give up. Yolanda Hernandez is also another of her favorites for constantly motivating her to do her best, and making sure she stayed on track, for always having her door open for Camila during her junior year, listening to her cry about her situation, and lastly for always having great advice and being extremely understanding. The place Camila would like to visit would be her birthplace, because the majority of her family still lives there, and she hasn’t seen them in 15 years. The person whom she admires most is her mom because she has raised her and her sister as a single parent for most of their lives. Although Camila has faced many challenges she has always stayed strong and never given up. She remembers that as a freshman she would always giggle with her classmates in weight class about how cute they thought Mr. Merritt was. She also remembers in her sophomore year doing the Harlem Shake in weights with Mrs. Szymczak, and all the times the students wouldn’t dress out and instead attempted to teach Mrs. Szymczak how to dance to “Mexican” music. Another favorite memory is the time she and Odalys got in trouble sophomore year because they decided to skip weights and hide, which caused the school to believe that they were missing. Lastly, she remembers the times in Ms. Tedford’s AR reading class with Jenny and Odalys when they would get in trouble for always sleeping and eating instead of reading. The thing Camila would change is to be more social. The event that impacted Camila the most during her high school years, was becoming pregnant right before starting her junior year, doing online classes second semester and not finishing her classes and having to play the catch up game at the beginning of her senior year while also working to graduate early.

His favorite teacher that has impacted him through the years would have to be Mr. McNally. If he could visit any place around the world it would be Sweden and to visit the Stockholm Palace. The person who he most admires would have to be his Grandpa David, because through the ups and downs he has made it. The person that he has most admired would have to be his Dad who has taught him everything from shooting a gun to being a gentleman. The thing he will most remember about high school is spending time with friends and going on FFA trips. If he could change anything about high school it would have to be his grades. Riley Sosa

Maria Soltero

August 26, 1996, Riley Sosa was born to Rob and Paula Sosa, in Liberal. Her plan for this next year is to attend a four-year college and major in Pre-Physical Therapy. Planning for the future, she hopes to attend a post graduate Physical Therapy School and start practicing in New Mexico. Her favorites that she has come to love in the past years would include her favorite book The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Her favorite type of music would be any kind and she really doesn’t have a favorite song. Her favorite movie though would be Water for Elephants and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Fann. The place Riley would like to visit most would be Bora Bora because she thinks it would be amazing to be that close to the ocean, and the scenery on the island is gorgeous. The person she most admires is her mother because she has given her sister and her everything she possibly could and has taught them so many valuable things that they will use for the rest of their lives. The thing she remembers most about school is sports and all of the amazing times she has been able to share with her friends. If she could change one thing about high school it would have to be taking school more seriously her freshman year. The event that had the greatest impact on her life was going out for sports her freshman year. She has learned so many life lessons from her basketball coach that will benefit her throughout her whole life. If she hadn’t been part of the team, she wouldn’t be as prepared for life after high school as she is now.

February 11, 1997, Maria De los Angeles Soltero Lerma was born in Delicias Chihuahua, Mexico, to Rafael and Blanca Guereque. Her plans for the next year would be attending Northwestern Oklahoma State to become a registered nurse. Her favorites during her high school years include her favorite book Chosen by P.C and Kristin Cast. Her favorite kind of music would have to be Latin, including the song Real by Chris Syler. Her favorite movie would have to be The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. While enjoying her last four years in high school, her favorite teacher along the way became Coach Fulton. If Maria could visit any place around the world it would be Fiji because to her it’s absolutely beautiful there. The person she most admires would be her mother because she’s the kindest and strongest person she knows. The thing she most remembers about high school is being in LMD. If she could change one thing about high school it would be not being able to have open lunch. The event that had the greatest impact on Maria would be getting her first job her freshman year, and that’s when she learned to be responsible

Emmanuel Valles Emmanuel Valles was born to Manuel and Yolanda Valles June 19, 1996 in Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico. In the future, Mexico would be a place that Emmanuel would like to return to because it is his homeland. For the foreseeable future, he will be attending Seward County Community College for auto-technology which he would like to pursue as a career in Denver after school. Going to vo-tech during his junior year no doubt inspired his decision and has ended up being what he remembers most about high school. However, what impacted him the most and really drove his love for cars was getting his Mustang because “it completely changed my perspective of being a car enthusiast.” In addition to cars, music is Emmanuel’s other love. He really enjoys any genre of music from acoustics to rock to piano music. Skipping to the genre of country, Emmanuel’s favorite song is “Who I Am With You” by Chris Young. Mixing his love of music and cars, it is no wonder that Emmanuel’s favorite movie is The Fast and the Furious franchise. While in school, he liked having Mr. Rodriguez as a teacher, but wishes he didn’t procrastinate so much during his sophomore year. The people he admires the most are his mother and father because they have made him the man he is today.

Edgar Villa Zulema and Refugion Montoya and Edvardo Villa are parents to Edgar Villa who was born November 25, 1996. He plans to pursue a degree in Law by starting at Benedictine College next school year. Beyond that, he would eventually like to visit Eugene, Oregon. During this time, Edgar’s favorite book was The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. He likes to listen to everything but country, and to kick it back to The Eagles with his favorite song Hotel California. When he isn’t reading or listening to music, he likes to watch I Am Legend. In high school, Edgar looks back on the whole time fondly. He was involved heavily in cross country and wrestling. He remembers waking up every morning to run with his team and the trips to the bathroom with Isaac. He cites his favorite teacher and coach, Nicholas Rodriguez, as one of his role models who was always there for him along with his parents. His other favorite teacher and wrestling coach, Brent Mahan, also made an impact on his life. Edgar says that the greatest impact was “wrestling practice [because] this was the hardest thing I have ever done. It prepared me for harder things and gave me the mentality that everything in life is easy compared to wrestling.” If you were to ask Edgar what he would change about high school is that he would have tried harder his freshman year of high school.

Magee Gifford Born November 1, 1996, in Garden City to Chad and Camee Gifford, Magee plans on attending a four-year college, getting a degree, becoming a child life specialist, getting married, traveling, and having a family. Her favorite book is Twisted, and her favorite song is This Little Light of Mine. Her favorite movie is The Sandlot, and she has innumerate favorite teachers. She wants to visit Thailand, and she admires Gabe Putthoff. She remembers always getting tardies and would have liked to be more involved. She really enjoyed being a cheerleader.

Kellen Watkins In Liberal July 9, 1996, Kellen Watkins was born to Kevin and Kim Watkins. While Kellen doesn’t necessarily know what his plans are for next year, he enjoyed his time in high school. His favorite teacher was Paige Rawlings. He will remember playing football and basketball the most, saying that playing sports made the greatest impact on his life. In the future, Kellen would like to visit Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to watch the Steelers play. During high school, his favorite music was country and he liked anything by Jason Aldean. Step Brothers is Kellen’s favorite movie and The Outsiders remains his favorite book. When asked who the person Kellen admired the most was, he responded with “my dad” because he is a hard worker and great dad.

Sadie Wood

Kathryn Claire Kennedy Weaver was born August 31, 1996 to Kathryn and Jeffery Weaver in Liberal. Next year, Katie plans to attend Benedictine College in order to earn her degree in Biology. In the future, she would like to work in research pertaining to the medical field. Eventually, when she is older, Katie would like to visit New York City because it is the city that never sleeps. With her love of science, it is no wonder that Mrs. Fann is one of her favorite teachers. Additionally, she enjoys Ms. Lacy, Coach Rodriguez, and Mr. Waters as teachers. In her spare time, Katie likes to watch movies such as The Hunger Games, The Giver, and Now You See Me. When she isn’t watching movies, Katie likes to listen to Indie Rock like Jason Mraz. Reflecting on her years in high school, Katie cites that attending Student Council camp in the summer of 2013 was one of her most cherished memories. Additionally, the event that had the greatest impact on her life was running at State cross country in Wamego. As she leaves Hugoton, Katie refers to her mother as someone she admires the most “because she is the strongest, most supportive woman I know.”

March 15, 1997, Sadie Wood was born to Julie Shand and Kelly Wood in Garden City. When she has free time, Sadie enjoys watching movies such as Gran Torino and listening to any sort of rock music. Far Away by Nickelback and I Miss You by Blink 182 are her favorite songs, and her favorite book is “Paper Towns” by John Green. The person that Sadie admires the most is her great-grandmother because she took her in when she had nobody else. After she graduates, Sadie plans to attend Seward County Community College to earn her Certified Nursing Assistants certificate. In the future, Sadie plans to attend medical school to become a pediatrician. Eventually, she would like to visit Australia because the country has always intrigued her. During her time in high school, Sadie’s favorite teachers were Mrs. Fann, Ms. Lacy, and Mr. Waters. Cross country, study nights with friends, and eighth hour art are some activities that she will remember most about high school. However, she would like to retake Trigonometry to earn an A in order to keep a 4.0 as something she would like to change about high school. The event that impacted Sadie the most in high school is “the first couple weeks of senior year because it made me realize that I was about to start living my life on my own.”
