Obituaries Gail Gillespie Friends and family will gather this weekend to remember and honor Gail J. Gillespie of Hugoton. Mrs. Gillespie passed from this life Saturday, September 19, 2015 at University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, Co. She was 60.
The daughter of William Sullivan and the former Joyce Jones, she was born July 21, 1955 at Ulysses. August 5, 1977, Gail and Roger Gillespie were married at Clayton, N.M.. Gail was a life-long learner, and attended college at Garden City Community College, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Eastern Arizona College and Fort Hay’s State University. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Panhandle State University in 1979 and her Master’s degree from Fort Hays State University in 1986. Mrs. Gillespie worked at High Plains Education Cooperative in Ulysses from 1982 to the present. She worked as a Gifted Facilitator for 19 years before an Assistant becoming Director for HPEC in 2001.
She assumed the HPEC Director position in 2011. Gail was a member of Kansas Association of Special Education Administrators (KASEA) and Kansas Gifted and Talented Association. Survivors include her husband Roger Gillespie of Hugoton; two sons, Seth Gillespie of Hugoton and Nathan Gillespie of Ulysses; her father William R. Sullivan and wife Alice of El Paso, Tx.; brother William R. Sullivan II MD and wife Beth of Sierra Vista, Az.; three sisters, Kate Sullivan of El Paso, Kelly Mathis and husband Jody of Hereford, Az. and Keri Mull and husband David of Plainview, Tx.; her three grandchildren, Cody Gillespie, Caden Gillespie and Natalie Gillespie; and many other relatives and friends. Gail was preceded in death by mother Joyce Ann Teegerstorm and son Chay Scott Gillespie. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26 at at the First Christian Church in Hugoton with Pastors Heath Kelley and Larry Bradford presiding. Inurnment will follow in Hugoton Cemetery under the direction of Paul’s Funeral Home of Hugoton. Friends may sign the register Friday, September 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. John “Eddie” Campbell Lifelong Stevens County resident John Eddie Campbell passed away Monday, September 14, 2015 at Wheatridge Nursing Home in Liberal at the age of 68. The son of John Campbell and the former Oletia Riggs, he was born October 13, 1946 at Liberal. February 13, 1981 he and Elda Martin were married in Hugoton. Mr. Campbell served his country in the National Guard and was a member of the American Legion. Eddie loved his family and really enjoyed playing pool. Edith “Joyce” Weyeneth Word has been received of the death of Edith Joyce Weyeneth of McCook, Ne. formerly of Danbury, Ne. Mrs. Weyeneth passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 94.
Ronald Martin Friends and family gathered Monday to remember and honor Ronald Martin, age 80, of Ulysses. Mr. Martin passed from this life Friday, September 18, 2015 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born July 6, 1935 in Tribune, the son of Bill Martin and the former Leona Becker. Ronald grew up in Tribune and graduated from Tribune High School. June 7, 1953 Ronald married Wilma Burch, his high school sweetheart, in Tribune. They enjoyed each other’s company for 62 years. In his younger years, Ronald worked on oil rigs. He also was a crop duster pilot, mechanic, and he retired from driving truck for Yellow Freight in 1998. He was a man of many talents; if something needed fixed, he could do it. In 1976, he built the home he and Wilma lived in. Ronald enjoyed the friendship of everyone he met. He was also an advisor and mentor to his sons. He enjoyed playing dominoes, reading and meeting his friends for coffee. Ronald was a member of the Oasis Church in Ulysses. He is survived by his wife Wilma of their home; sons, Frank Martin and wife Stephanie of Holcomb, Larry Martin and wife Sherri of Hugoton and Dennis Martin and wife GeJuan of Ulysses;
his brother Delbert Martin and wife Nancy of Grand Junction, Co.; sister-in-law Dorothy Martin of Tribune; his ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Martin is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gene and Bob; and two brothers, Lawrence and LeRoy Martin. Funeral services were attended Monday morning, September 21 at the Oasis Church in Ulysses with Pastor Richard Martin officiating. Interment followed in the Ulysses Cemetery. Joyce was born July 4, 1921, at Danbury to parents Absalom Gregory and the former Isabelle M. Ruby. She graduated from Danbury High School. August 1, 1943 Joyce and Norris Elwood Weyeneth were united in marriage at Atwood. They made their home on the family farm west of Danbury, where they together would farm until their health prevented them from farming. Joyce also cooked for Marion District #4 school as well as being a busy homemaker and mother of three. Mrs. Weyeneth was a member of the Danbury
Ernestine “Momma” Shelton The death of Ernestine Shelton “Momma Shelton” has been learned. Mrs. Shelton passed from this life, Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at her residence in Liberal. She was 89.
She was born June 5, 1926 in Florida, the daughter of Roy Shelton and the former Olga Mae Hitgon. She had been a resident of Liberal for the past 30 years and was a member of the New Life Church.
Larry of Liberal; two brothers, Bill Campbell of Liberal and Steve Campbell and wife Marsha of Hugoton; his sister Kristi Kuehn of Woodward, Ok.; and other relatives and friends. Those preceding Mr. Campbell in death were his parents; stepson Kevin Adams; and granddaughter Erica Walsh. Funeral services were attended Saturday morning, September 19 at Trinity Baptist Church in Hugoton. Inurnment will be at a later date. Paul’s Funeral Home of Hugoton is in charge of arrangements. Momma Shelton dedicated her life as a missionary not only in Liberal, but also around the world. She had a passion for people, giving of herself to others Survivors include her adopted son Larrie Miller of Liberal; and several nieces and nephews, including Gregory Shelton of Florida. Funeral services were attended Tuesday morning, September 22 at Bibleway Church of God in Christ, with Larrie Miller officiating. Burial followed in Liberal Cemetery. Presbyterian Church and life-long member of American Legion Auxiliary. She played the piano and organ for pleasure and loved to sing, often singing at church and for funerals. She also enjoyed crocheting and quilting. Preceding her in death were her parents, Absalom and Belle Gregory; and two sisters, Norma Gregory and Carol Helm. Survivors include her daughter Bonnie Lomax and husband Kenny of Hugoton; two sons, Lonnie Weyeneth and Joe Weyeneth and wife Cheri, all of Danbury; nine grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Hartman of Golden, Co.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends. MacArthur “Mac” Plummer Former Rolla resident MacArthur “Mac” Plummer passed from this life Thursday, September 17, 2015 surrounded by his family at Select Specialty Hospital in Oklahoma City, Ok. Mac had been making his home in Kingfisher, Ok. at the time of his death. He was 73. Born April 17, 1942, Mac was the oldest of five boys born to Jerry Plummer and the former Roberta Link in a log cabin just outside of Chester, Ok. The family moved to Enid, Ok. in the early 1950’s where Mac spent the rest of his childhood. He attended Enid High School where he played football, basketball and baseball, earning All-State honors in football and baseball and second team All-State in basketball. Mac attended Phillips University where he received a scholarship to play basketball and baseball. He graduated with a degree in education and took a position at Waller Junior High in Enid teaching and coaching. Mr. Plummer then took a similar position in Woodward, Ok. where he met his future wife Gerry Stolz of Kingfisher. They were married July 24, 1971. They moved to Rolla where they resided for 33 years. During his tenure at USD 217 in Rolla, Mac served as a teacher, coach and administrator. For over ten years he taught Math, Driver’s Education and Science. He was also K-8 principal for 13 years, K12 principal for five years and superintendent for another five years. Mac started
Guvana Holcomb Former Stevens County resident Guvana Taylor Holcomb passed peacefully at home with her family at her bedside Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at the age of 78 after battling cancer.
She was born May 1, 1937 in Stevens County, to Bert and Freeda Taylor. Guvana and Robert
Martha Arange Lifelong Hugoton resident Martha Shepard Arange passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton. She was 68. The daughter of John and Pauline McClure Shepard, she was born November 5, 1946 in Hugoton. Martha loved her family and enjoyed driving to Cripple Creek, Co. with her son Patrick. She worked for Pioneer Manor Nursing Home for 25 years and she enjoyed working with the residents. Survivors include her two sons, Patrick Arange of Hugoton and David Arange and wife Miriam of Antioch, Ca.; daughter Tammi Eckert and husband Marc of Hugoton; her brother Paul Shepard of Arizona; eight
out as the assistant football coach and helped lead the 1973 team that won the Eight Man State Championship. The following season he was promoted to the head coach position and coached a combined 13 years. As a result of his team’s achievements, he was recognized as Coach of the Year by many publications during four different seasons. He was also a coach for the inaugural Eight-Man All-Star Game in 1986. Also during his time in Rolla, he coached basketball, track and summer baseball ranging from Tball to American Legion. Mac was always an athlete and took great pride in his ability to play and coach a variety of sports. He influenced the lives of many young men who had the opportunity to call him “Coach Plummer”. In 2004, Mac and Gerry retired and made their home in Kingfisher. In retirement, he spent most of his time golfing, fishing and hunting. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time spoiling his five grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Gerry of Kingfisher; two sons, Zac and wife Chelsi of Amarillo, Tx. and Chad and wife Becky of Manhattan; four brothers, Vernon and wife Connie of Houston, Tx., Tom and wife Elaine of Scottsdale, Az., Jerry and wife Gay Lynn of Houston and Buddy and wife Linda of Broken Arrow, Ok.; and his five grandchildren, Emerson, Riley, Alexander, Madelyn and Leah. Mac was preceded in death by his parents.

“Bobby” Holcomb both lived less than five miles down a country road from each other in Stevens County. They graduated together in 1954 from Hugoton High School. Guvana attended college at KU, where she majored in Art. Bobby was attending college at OSU, and proposed marriage; she said because he missed her so. Guvana transferred to OSU and they were married August 9, 1955. The couple recently celebrated their sixteth anniversary together. Mrs. Holcomb was a loving mother and was involved in many activities and charities, loved to play bridge and was an avid reader. Guvana also had a very successful career in business. Being an artist, she was drawn to the southwest for inspiration, so they moved to Albuquerque, N.M. in 1999 upon retirement. Here she became a dedicated artist and was a member of the Pastel Society. Guvana always had the fondest memories of her hometown of Hugoton. Go Eagles! Survivors include her eldest sister Rovena Hukil; her very loving husband Robert Holcomb; and their children, Tracy Holcomb-Walker, Kent Holcomb and Sean Holcomb; and their only grandchild, Kylar Holcomb. Guvana’s younger brother Kevin Taylor, along with her mother Freeda, both died tragically in a car accident just before Christmas in December of 1970; and her father Bert Taylor passed away in April of 1993. Memorial services are planned for Saturday morning, September 26 followed by a reception. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
