The focus of periodontal therapy has always been to amputate diseased tissue, but this process focuses more on trying to treat the disease without cutting away

tissue and bone. It uses a specialized laser and a patented no-cut, no-stitch technique to treat gum disease. In some cases, we can actually regrow some of the diseased tissue and bone. Are you using any new technology in your office? We are now fabricating same-day crowns with our Planmeca E4D scanning and milling system for crowns. This helps us save patients time while allowing us to customize our work with greater detail. In addition we use the Millennium Dental Technologies PerioLase to perform LANAP for our patients. Other advanced technology includes digital x-rays, comfort control syringes, needle-free anesthesia, sedation dentistry, precision dentistry, electric handpieces, laser dentistry, gum disease laser therapy, laser smile, Zoom! whitening, digital imaging, intraoral cameras, T-scan electronic bite adjustments and VELscope for oral cancer screenings. What is the most common misconception among your patients regarding dental care? The most common misconception that I find among my patients has been that they are misinformed about a variety of aspects in dentistry. If we can do anything to help them learn about good oral care and how to keep their teeth for a lifetime, we will take the time and make the effort to do so. We often find that the cheapest dentistry is the dentistry that you only have to do once. Even if it costs a little more the first time around, if it doesn’t need to get redone every few years, then it is truly less expensive and worthwhile. Describe the patient-doctor relationship at your practice. Over the years, our relationships with our patients have become very personal. Many of our patients are with us for decades, and

as such we tend to get to know them very well. We’ve been able to establish and keep such long-lasting, trusting relationships by always having open and honest conversation. When patients need us, we are always there and we always try to do the best dentistry available anywhere. The staff really caters to the desires of patients, and of course having a comfort menu with fun things like hand paraffin treatments and home-baked goods doesn’t hurt either.

What are the most important qualities that a patient should look for when choosing a dentist? I think that it is important for a patient to choose a dentist based on his or her training and on his or her skill set. It is important to have a dentist who can really analyze and treat a great variety of dental issues. One of my mentors once told me that the untrained dentist doesn’t know what they don’t know. Only by constant training and education can dentists learn to understand the complexities of dental disease and the relationship between seemingly unrelated issues. I also think that it is important for dentists to have empathy for their patients. Doctors need to be able to relate to their patients’ individual wants and needs.

The patient-doctor relationship is a very personal one. Patients put their trust in us to do the best we can as if we were treating members of our own family. That is what we believe is the correct way to treat every patient. If it were my wife, mother, father or child, how would we treat them? Finally, we just like to develop a rapport with patients that is friendly and welcoming. We have multilingual doctors at our office to accommodate those who may need translators. We want to help as many patients as possible achieve their best smile. What are the most important qualities that a patient should look for when choosing a dentist? There are three questions a patient should ask before committing to a doctor. First, do I trust my doctor and believe he/she will have my best interests at heart? What’s the most common misconception among your patients regarding orthodontic care? There are two big misconceptions I see. First, two-phase treatment does not mean braces twice. The first phase is the interceptive phase or “jaw moving phase” designed to improve the jaw alignment and bite in poorly growing children. The second is that “all orthodontic and Invisalign treatment are the same.” This isn’t true at all. In my opinion, a specialist in orthodontics is best suited to provide orthodontic treatment. Please highlight any unique services that your practice offers its patients. When the patient is seated in the back massage chair, dark glasses are placed to protect the eyes from foreign objects or a glare from my lighted magnification loupes. We also use a buffered anesthetic so the injections are more comfortable. I often use a dental dam to do the procedures, which is quickly placed to the area and gives a sterile and dry field. This allows for a better restoration with less procedure time. We often replace the old amalgam (commonly known as a silver filling) containing mercury, which is drilled out into a fine powder. By using the dental dam and isolating the area, the patients do not end up swallowing this fine metal powder. Describe the patient-doctor relationship at your practice. I pay attention to small details with my patients. I ask what’s new in their lives or if there are any changes in their medical history. I always place a small pillow behind their neck, place Vaseline on the lips and massage the joint after a procedure. I also follow up with them after a procedure and they are given my cell number just in case.

Are you using any new technology in your office? I’ve been in practice for about 30 years, but we relocated our office less than 10 years ago. The computers are networked into every room. Our digital x-ray equipment is unique in that the films are very thin like the conventional film size. Most digital sensors are thick and uncomfortable. I chose this type for the patient’s comfort. We also have an intraoral camera and a dental laser, which are new technologies in our office. What’s in store for you and your practice in the future? e all have our vices: whether it’s a nightly soda with dinner, an after-dinner Snickers bar, a handful of potato chips in front of the TV, or an adult beverage after a long week. We all deserve to indulge a little, but your dentist may be concerned to learn if any or all of the above are part of your daily or weekly routine. Any dentist will tell you that sugary foods and poor diet can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Foods that are high in carbs, starches and sugars produce plaque, which causes tooth enamel to break down and cavities to form. But it’s not just the obvious lineup of candy bars, sodas and potato chips that are responsible for all the dirty work. Pizza, hamburger buns and breads are just as guilty. The labels on these foods show that they are high in sugars and starches that eventually break down into sugars. However, some foods high in sugars still contain nutrients that we need in our daily intake. So, it’s okay to have pizza for dinner, but consider a healthier snack afterwards. Put the chocolate bar down and consider one of the healthier alternatives below. If you make the better choice now, your body and teeth will thank you later. Indulging a little here and there is not the issue. In fact, it’s best to do everything in moderation. So, enjoy that hamburger with the sesame seed bun for dinner, but make a wiser choice for dessert.

When craving potato chips, consider noshing on: Popcorn Potato chips are very high in starch, which can get trapped in your teeth. All the food particles can cause plaque build-up, which is what you need to avoid. Popcorn is a wonderful alternative, as it is not made of refined starch.

Alcoholic drinks are notorious for their sugar content. While water may seem like a boring alternative, it certainly is the healthiest for you and your teeth.

On the hunt for something sweet? Try these: Fresh Fruit Fruit does have sugar, but these are natural sugars and it’s a fibrous snack that contains important nutrients that are good for your body. Try adding fresh fruit to plain yogurt. Be sure it’s not yogurt with added sugars. Your teeth will be happy and your body will thank you!

Six ways to prove this to your children

he dentist’s office is a very scary place. That is, of course, if you’re led to believe it. As reported by Colgate.com, It has been estimated that 9 to 15 percent of Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of anxiety and fear. That’s about 30 million to 40 million people. In a survey by the British Dental Health Foundation, 36 percent of those who didn’t see a dentist regularly said that fear is the main reason. Healthy Living • 2016

“While the good intention is certainly there, parents often set their children up for a fearful visit to the dentists.” Parents who are afraid of visiting their dentist are most likely passing on that fear to their children. This keeps them from getting important routine dental checkups to promote healthy teeth and good oral health habits. Parents usually have a tough time getting their children out of the door and into a dentist’s office. They find it takes a lot of consoling, bribing and assuring. While the good intention is certainly there, parents often set their children up for a fearful visit to the dentists. For those looking to prepare their children for a less traumatic experience, there are plenty of ways to lower levels of anxiety and possibly make the dentist’s office a place for your child to look forward to. There are plenty of things children are afraid of: the monster under their bed, a bad report card or the dark. The dentist shouldn’t be one of those fears.

As a parent, you’re doing the right thing by safeguarding your child’s oral health, which is a major contributor to their overall health.

The first step is finding the right pediatric dentist to fit your child’s personality. Looking up your child’s potential dentist online shouldn’t be difficult and finding a couple of insightful patient testimonials shouldn’t be either. Read a handful of reviews and you should get a good look at the dentist’s bedside manner before meeting them. If the majority of reviews claim that the dentist is very straightforward and less than sympathetic towards a fussy patient, you may find that’s the best personality to work with your child. Perhaps a dentist’s review show him or her to be the opposite, warm and gentle with compassion towards your child’s every fear. Either way, knowing a little bit more about the physician before your child

Step Two: Put your own anxieties aside Often times, parents’ own anxieties can be picked up by their children. It’s best for parents to limit details, but to answer any of their child’s questions they may have. These answers should be simple and honest. Should the questions be difficult to answer in a way that may not be scary for a child, it’s best to leave those for the dentist. Remember that dentists, especially pediatric dentists, are trained to explain things to children in an easy, non-threatening way. It’s also important to keep in mind that certain words like “hurt” and “pain” should be avoided in any conversation regarding a dentist visit.

Step Four: Be honest It’s important to comfort and reassure your child, but the most important thing you can do is to be honest. Sometimes parents think that if they promise their child that they won’t be receiving a shot, it’ll ease their anxieties and get them

Step Five: Don’t bribe your children Another mistake parents make is they bribe their children with rewards in order to get them to go to the dentist. For example, if a parent tells their child that if they behave at the dentist’s office they’ll purchase them a toy. If the child has a moment caused by fear and anxiety at the office, it’s an unrealistic expectation of the parent. This causes much frustration between parent and child. It may be better for the parent to suggest that they do something fun after the appointment, not dependent on their child’s behavior. Another major mistake many parents make is they use the dentist to instill fear in their children. They may threaten to take them straight to the dentist’s office for a shot in order to frighten them into good behavior. This only associates dentist visits with negativity.

hen a dentist takes a look into your mouth, he or she sees a lot of things. The dentist can tell you what you already know, whether you should be flossing, brushing or coming in for cleanings more often. What you may not already know is that a routine dental exam can expose major issues going on with the rest of your body. Studies have linked common oral issues to diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease and even premature birth. Healthy Living â&#x20AC;˘ 2016

Seeing as gum disease is the most common oral health issue in diabetics, it’s important to keep on top of these warning signs. If you have gum disease, it’s possible for the bacteria in your gums to travel all the way to your heart. This can eventually lead to coronary artery disease. The bacteria can cause clots or plaque build-up in arteries that can ultimately disrupt blood flow to the heart. Should a dentist see inflamed gums and loose teeth, it can also be a sign of heart disease. A receding gum line combined with loose teeth can be a sign of osteoporosis. The bone disease causes changes in the bones that support teeth like the jaw. Those with low bone mineral density tend to lose more teeth. It’s possible that if bone loss is significant, dentures could become loose or illfitting. These are all signs that a medical doctor should check for osteoporosis. Dementia patients lose memory, have heightened confusion and are disorganized. It’s also common for a person with early dementia to have poor oral hygiene. Scientists at the University of California followed 5,000 elderly people over the course of 18 years and learned those who brushed their teeth less than once per day were 65 percent more likely to develop dementia than those who brushed daily. Should a dentist notice bone loss and a decline in general oral health, Alzheimer’s disease could be the cause. Pregnant women with periodontal disease are at risk for delivering a preterm baby. Every expectant mother is aware of the importance of maintaining good health, especially during their pregnancy. Oral health should not be missed. A healthy mouth also supports overall health. Keeping up-to-date with daily brushing and flossing, scheduled cleanings and dentist and periodontist visits will certainly help to maintain a healthy safe pregnancy for mother and baby. Understanding that there’s a major connection between oral and overall health is a key component to protecting oneself. The mouth offers many
