Community Officer – Thomas Bowden Hey everyone, I’m Tom, the Community Officer at Huddersfield Student’s Union. Welcome to the Huddersfield Students’ Union Brokerage guide! Over the next year I will be working on volunteering, charity fundraising and employability. Come and talk to me about any of these topics, or anything at all; and I will always want to help! By signing on to our Brokerage System you are not only providing our students with your amazing volunteering opportunities, but you’re also gaining hard working, passionate students for your organisations! Our brokerage system is packed with various opportunities from numerous organisations, big or small, so don’t be afraid to advertise yours now for our students to see. We thoroughly encourage our students to start volunteering as it is a brilliant way of enriching their CV; developing their skills and meeting new people, creating great friends. If you have any questions, or just fancy a chat, make sure you pop up to the SU or email me at su.communities@hud.ac.uk. See you soon! Tom

What is the Brokerage system? Page | 2

The Brokerage system is an online service used to help connect organisations to students for volunteering opportunities. The Students’ Union (SU) website holds this service, which has been designed by the National Union of Students’ (NUS). The system provides a means of communication between organisations and students. Organisations can upload their volunteer opportunities for students to see and apply for.

How does it work for you? Once registered on the system a profile is created for your organisation so you can manage and upload new volunteering opportunities at a time and place that suits you. The online system provides total flexibility. Once your new opportunities have been approved by volunteering staff at the SU, students will be able to view and apply. Volunteering staff approve opportunities to ensure they are appropriate and to proof-read before they go live. You then have the option to approve all the applications that you receive from students, if you don’t want to do this we can approve them for you. The Students’ Union website doesn’t work when using Internet Explorer, please use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your internet browser when trying to access the website.

What do we need from you? We can only approve your organisation profile once we have a copy of the following documents:    

Volunteering expenses policy – we ask you cover reasonable out of pocket expenses in order to remove barriers to participation Health & Safety policy Public Liability Insurance certificate Equal Opportunities policy

This page is where you outline the different aspects of your volunteering opportunity.

Some helpful tips at this stage… 1. Make the name relevant but exciting – it is the first thing that potential volunteers will see in regards to the opportunity. 2. Select a relevant area of interest from the drop down menu because many students do search for opportunities based around their areas of interest. 3. It is always useful to include mandatory/desirable skills because it highlights the type of people that are suitable for this position, however ‘skills the volunteer can gain’ section is most relevant because it highlights the particular skills a student can gain; showing them what they can get out of the opportunity Once you have completed the page, scroll back to the top and click the Save button which will submit it ready for approval. When your volunteering opportunity has been approved it can be found here: Huddersfield.su/volunteering-opportunities
