■ CONTROVERSIAL : Henry Moore sculpture One of the art world’s most controversial sculptures goes on display in Huddersfield Art Gallery this September, on loan from the Tate Gallery and the centrepiece of an eight-week exhibition called Fields of Contention. Carl Andre’s sculpture, Equivalent VIII, was bought by the Tate in 1972, and is an arrangement of 120 fire bricks. It attracted widespread media criticism when it first went on display in 1976, simply described by many as a ‘pile of bricks’. Controversy still surrounds the piece today, so that whenever it is exhibited people still flock to see what all the fuss was about and decide for themselves. From September 17th, you can see it

displayed alongside works from other famous artists and sculptors, like Henry Moore who we’ve come to love, but who were equally controversial in their day. Contemporary artist Sarah Staton will also be making new work to be displayed for the first time here in Huddersfield. Visit the gallery to make up your own mind, and look out for details of our programme of family talks and activities which accompany the show. The exhibition, Fields of Contention, runs until 12th November and is part of Art in Yorkshire - a year-long celebration of art in various venues across Yorkshire, supported by the Tate.

Also included in the bid is a full programme of opportunities for children and adults to play and enjoy the game during the build up to the tournament and

Coming soon…

Last season the BBC Philharmonic thrilled our audience with a magnificent performance of Mozart’s great Symphony No. 40 in G minor. This season they open with the so called ‘Little G minor’, but there’s nothing ‘little’ about this work. Written when the composer was just seventeen, it’s a full-blooded, stormy, dramatic symphony and a great prelude to Sibelius’ atmospheric concerto and Brahms’ final symphony. Brahms was a composer able to meld the classical architecture of the past with the rich expressiveness of his own era, and nowhere more so than in the work that crowned his symphonic career. Mozart: Symphony No. 25 in G minor Sibelius: Violin Concerto Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E minor Conductor: Jonathan Schiffman Violin: Alexandra Soumm Talking Music: 6.40pm Tickets: £7.50-£23.50 (plus concessions) from Kirklees Booking Offices

We open the season in Dewsbury with Mozart at his most romantic and Beethoven at his most classical. Mozart’s dramatic and impassioned Piano Concerto No. 20 was one of the works which most closely cemented the perception of him as the harbinger of the coming Romantic age. It’s set beside two of Beethoven’s most dramatic overtures and his most light-hearted symphony, full of Haydnesque high spirits. Beethoven: Overture: Coriolan Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor Beethoven: Grand Overture in C: Die Namensfeier Beethoven: Symphony No. 8 in F Conductor: Yasuo Shinozaki Piano: Piers Lane Talking Music: 6.40pm Tickets: £6.50-£18.50 (plus concessions) from Kirklees Booking Offices

Celebrate Older People’s Day on 1 October

The theme for this year’s UK Older People's Day 2011 is all about getting and staying active in later life and brings the chance to raise awareness of the benefits that physical, social and mental activity brings. Across Kirklees there are many opportunities for older people to get and stay active from walking groups to “Shall we dance” sessions, chair-based activity sessions to classes at sports centres or local community centres for keep fit, zumba and much more. If you have a specific health condition you may like to try PALS – the Kirklees exercise referral scheme which can help people who are inactive become more active with support and encouragement. To find out more about PALS contact your GP or practice nurse.

Helping people to stay active as they get older has many benefits; it’s a great way to make friends and socialise, can be an opportunity to learn new skills and get out and about in the local community, can help people stay independent for longer and increase energy levels and zest for life. To help you “Live life to the full” in Kirklees visit www.kirklees.gov.uk/livelife and find out more about opportunities, services and information which you may find useful if you are over 50. Alternatively ring Gateway to care on 01484 414933 for a copy. There are events to celebrate Older People’s Day on 1 October – see www.kirklees.gov.uk/events for details of these and other events and activities which take place throughout the year.
