NEW DUAL TRACK TRAIN LINE TO HUA HIN TO OPEN THIS YEAR AND WILL SLASH TRAVEL TIME TO BANGKOK

Eventually, a total of seven dual track train lines spanning some 985km will be in operation throughout the country.

Currently five dual track train lines are being constructed in Thailand, all of which will be completed this year, after the government decided to expedite the upgrade of its rail network, Mr Anucha said.

Another dual track line that connects Chachoengsao Junction - Khlong Sib Kao Junction - Kaeng Khoi Junction, a 106km route, opened in 2019.

The new dual track train line to Hua Hin will open by the end of the and will slash travel time to and from Bangkok, the government has announced.

Once opened, the new train line will drastically cut jour ney time between Hua Hin and the capital from five hours to around two and a half hours, Anucha Burapachaisri, government spokesman and deputy secretary-general to the prime minister said recently.

Travel times will be reduced as the dual tracks will mean that trains will no longer need to stop for one another during the journey.

The Chira Road junction-Khon Kaen, a 187 km route, became operational in 2020, although a section of the line is still to be completed and should be finished by the end of this year.

The line which includes Hua Hin forms part of the route which connects Nakhon Pathom with Chumphon and is divided into three sections: Nakhon Pathom - Hua Hin (169km), Hua Hin - Prachuap Khiri Khan (76km) and Prachuap Khiri Khan - Chumphon (167km).

NEW DUAL TRACK TRAIN LINE TO HUA HIN TO OPEN THIS YEAR AND WILL SLASH TRAVEL TIME TO BANGKOK

Two other routes Lop Buri - Pak Nam Pho (145km) and Mab KabaoThanon Jira Junction (135km) will also be completed this year.

Mr Anucha said the new dual track line will make train travel in Thailand safer and reduce freight transportation costs.

The dual track trains will arrive and depart Bangkok at the new (and pretty spectacular) Bang Sue Grand Station, which is now the largest railway station in Southeast Asia.

In May, the Department of Rail Transport (DRT) announced that large parts of the line in and around Hua Hin were close to completion, with all remaining work now being expedited so the entire project will be operational by 2023.

Redevelopment of Hua Hin Railway Station

One of the most notable aspects of the construction of the new dual track train line in and around the town centre is the redevelopment of Hua Hin’s iconic railway station.

While the original station building will remain in place with plans mooted to turn it into a museum or cultural centre, Hua Hin will soon be served by a new train station.

The new station will consist of a two storey elevated structure consisting of a station office and waiting area on the ground floor.

The elevated platform of the new dual track line will coexist alongside the original track, which is set to remain in place for freight trains or charter convoys used on special occasions.

The new station forms part of a 4 kilometre long elevated track which

begins approximately on the land behind Soi 64 and continues through the town over Sois 88, 94 and 102.

High speed train to Hua Hin by 2032

The dual track rail line is not to be confused with the high speed train line that is also being constructed in Thailand.

Hua Hin being confirmed as a destination for a high speed train has been somewhat of a stop start process.

Recent years have seen several new high speed rail development projects proposed throughout Thailand, some of which have included Hua Hin as a potential destination.

However, up until recently, any concrete plans had remained firmly on the drawing board.

That was until last month when the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reaffirmed the government’s policy regarding the development of rail transport, saying it will implement a high speed train project across the country, covering the North, Northeast, East and South.

The northern high speed train project will stretch from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, while the northeastern line will run from Bangkok to Nong Khai.

The eastern line, which includes connecting Suvarnabhumi, Don Meuang and U-Tapao airports, will then connect Bangkok with Rayong, while the southern line will run from Bangkok to Padang Besar.

The construction of the southern line, which will include Hua Hin, will be divided into two phases.

Phase 1, which is expected to be completed by 2032, will run from Bangkok to Hua Hin covering a distance of 211 kilometres and will connect five stations: Bang Sue, Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi and Hua Hin.

Phase 2 of the project will run from Hua Hin to Padang Besar, a distance of 759 kilometers. The route will connect eight stations: Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Hat Yai and Padang Besar. This phase is expected to be completed by 2037.

While the price of fares for the southern line is yet to be determined, fares on the northeastern line will range from 105 baht to 535 baht, with each train departing every 90 minutes between 6am and 12pm daily.

Other information not available at the time of publishing was regarding the location of the high speed train station in Hua Hin.

“This high-speed train network will not only connect parts of Thailand but also serve as a rail link in Asean,” said the SRT.

“When all four high-speed train projects are fully built and connected, they will serve as a link of a huge network of rail transport of both passengers and cargo between China and Malaysia via Laos and Thailand.”

ISSUE 243 • OCTOBER 20222

It’s

already October and with that I welcome you to the latest edition of Hua Hin Today.

In this issue we bring you the latest developments regarding the new dual track train line to Hua Hin.

In September, the Thai government announced that the line would be open before the end of the year.

Following the announcement we were able to bring you the news online just as it broke.

However, in the print edition we go a little more in depth, taking a closer look not only at the plans for the line but we also tell you about the trains which are earmarked for use on the line.

The new dual track line is what many of us have seen being constructed in the town over the last few years.

Construction of the line continued apace even during the height of the pandemic. Away from the centre of Hua Hin there has been some remarkable progress made both to the north and south of town.

While traveling by train in Thailand is actually quite a nice experience and very affordable, currently the rail network is simply too slow, which means train travel is not really viable for anyone who happens to be in any kind of hurry.

But that will all change when the new dual track line is operational.

Trains will no longer be forced to wait for another to pass in the opposite direction.

The government says the new train line will slash travel between Hua Hin and Bangkok to around two and half hours. Currently, you’d be lucky if the journey took four hours and in reality it probably takes closer to six hours to complete the journey.

The new dual track train line to Hua Hin forms part of the new Southern line and will be an absolute game changer, not only for the region, but for travel between most of the south of Thailand and the capital.

Time will tell if the constriction of the line will be completed by the government’s year end target.

The dual track train line is of course not to be confused with the high speed train line which is also being built in Thailand.

Hua Hin had been included in the original proposals for the line, then an initial feasibility study appeared to rule out a high speed train ever coming here.

But now, the government has said that Hua Hin will get a high speed train and I’m delighted that Hua Hin

Today is able to bring you further details about that in this issue.

A busy September

September was a busy month with lots of events and things going on around town.

A particular highlight for me was the exhibition by local photographer Patrick Jacobs, which was held at The Standard, Hua Hin.

Patrick showcased some of his best photographs that he had printed onto aluminium boards which gave them a fascinating perspective and striking high gloss quality.

It’s always nice to see good things happening to good people, and Patrick is a good person.

If you are not familiar with his work, then make sure you take a look at the Foto’s by Patrick Jacobs Facebook page.

Latest on tourist arrivals to the province

Also in this issue we bring you the latest figures on the number of tourists that have visited Prachuap Khiri Khan during the first seven months of the year.

Spoiler alert - it was just over five million, which seems like a lot, because it is.

However, nearly all of those were domestic tourists, with around 40,000 foreign tourists visiting the province in that time period.

Hopefully in the run up to Christmas, in what would typically be the high season, we’ll start to see an increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting town.

A new podcast

Finally, we have a couple of things in the pipeline for Hua Hin Today that I am really excited about.

I’m excited because I think (hope) our readers will enjoy and find them beneficial.

Since joining Hua Hin Today I have been really eager for us to be able to connect with as many people as possible across a variety of different platforms.

Our print version is clearly well established and we have seen significant growth in the numbers of people engaging with both the Hua Hin Today website and Facebook page in recent months.

We have also introduced a twice weekly email newsletter, which appears to be proving popular with subscribers. (Register at huahintoday.com/subscribe).

As I hope Hua Hin Today continues to evolve, the next phase in this will see the launch of a new podcast, which will be available in audio (at wherever you listen to your podcasts) and in video.

There will be full details about the new podcast released in the coming weeks online and in the next edition of the newspaper.

HUA HIN FLIGHT CLUB: EXOTIC BIRDS FREE FLYING AT KHAO TAKIAB BEACH

treat you almost like a friend.”

Hua Hin Today caught up with Khun Graph as she was preparing to free fly her macaws on Khao Takiab beach.

Free flying - the niche hobby where birds are trained to fly freely outdoors before returning to their owner upon command - has become a major part of the thirty two year old’s life.

Khun Graph is one of a number of bird owners who take their birds to free fly around Khao Takiab beach.

Head down to the beach early in the evening on a Saturday or Sunday and it is not uncommon to see any one of a number of local bird owners flying macaws or cockatoos and it can make for quite a spectacle.

The idea of exotic birds worth hundreds of thousands of baht flying freely around one of Hua Hin’s most popular beaches may be hard to fathom for most pet owners.

But for Sutipsinee Limsaranrom, or Khun Graph, flying her flamboyant and charming macaws out in public is a familiar airspace.

Khun Graph is the owner of two colourful macaws, five year old ‘Moo Daeng’ and two and half year old ‘Moo Gob’.

“You would be surprised but you can really build a relationship with a bird like this,” Khun Graph told Hua Hin Today.

“It’s similar to that between a dog and its owner. The birds like to play and

Khun Graph, who is normally based in Bangkok but free flys her macaws at Khao Takiab when visiting Hua Hin, is always on the lookout for open spaces where she can fly her birds.

“There are actually more open spaces in Bangkok than you might think. There are a number of places around Rama II where we go to fly, Khun Graph said.

The main danger to the birds when they are free flying are buildings, especially big ones with lots of windows such as glass fronted tower blocks or condominiums. It is also not a good idea to fly the birds in poor weather, nor will they fly when it is dark.

The biggest fear for owners is that their birds, some of which can cost a million baht or more, go free flying and don’t return.

Some owners choose to attach a GPS device to their bird to help them if their feathered friend goes AWOL.

However, apart from a few minor scares, Khun Graph said her macaws have always returned.

In terms of daily care, Khun Graph said the macaws are not that difficult to take care of.

They live on a diet, as you might expect, of fruit, nuts and seeds and need a check up with the veterinarian every six months or so just like any other pet.

A unique aspect of macaw ownership is that these pets can reach up to 80 years of age, and forge a lifelong bond with their owners.

Khun Graph, who has owned birds and an array of other animals most of her life, said there is now an ever increasing community of bird owners in Thailand.

She says that she feels that the popularity of bird ownership increased during the pandemic as birds make such good companions.

“I’d recommend anyone to get a bird as a pet,” Khun Graph said.

“But you need to do your research first into reputable breeders and maybe speak with other bird owners via some of the already established free flying clubs in Bangkok and elsewhere in Thailand.”

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THAILAND’S BAN ON VAPING, E-CIGARETTES

smoking, travellers coming to Thailand should be aware that these devices are, in fact, illegal in the kingdom”.

“Many may ask why a device designed to aid people in quitting the habit is being banned in Thailand.

“The ban was introduced in 2014 by the Thai Government for health reasons and that electronic cigarettes were luring young people into smoking.

“Anyone found breaking this law by using an electronic cigarette – or vaping – in Thailand could be arrested and face jail time, or a fine several times the value of the illegal item(s). This applies to both foreigners and Thais.

“There have been recent incidents of foreign travellers who were unaware of the ban facing an on-the-spot fine or being arrested.

“Thus, travellers coming to Thailand are advised not to bring any electronic cigarettes with them, nor any item or equipment associated with e-cigarettes, such as the liquid used in the device.

Thailand’s

government has no plan to overturn its ban on e-cigarettes and vaping, according to comments made by the country’s public health minister.

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reaffirmed the ban on the import and use of e-cigarettes.

Mr Anutin said that e-cigarettes pose significant health risks to users and that vaping was helping to create new smokers particularly among young people in Thailand.

According to a survey conducted by the National Statistical Office in 2021, more than half of the 80,000 e-cigarette smokers in Thailand were found to be aged between 15 and 24 years old.

Mr Anutin said the data showed that vaping has helped to create new smokers in Thailand, especially amongst younger people.

He also said that studies from other countries had found that smoking e-cigarettes can have a harmful effect on the development of young people’s brains.

Mr Anutin said that the only effective way to control vaping was to continue with the ban on e-cigarettes.

While it may not be uncommon to see people vaping in Thailand, it is technically breaking the law.

The ban on vaping and e-cigarettes in Thailand has actually been in place since 2014.

Anyone caught vaping is likely to have their e-cigarette confiscated and would be subject to a fine - the amount of which can vary a lot from case to case.

There are also laws that prohibit the import and sale of e-cigarettes.

Under the current law, anyone found to have imported an e-cigarette could face a maximum fine of 30,000 baht and/or face a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

People involved in the sale of e-cigarettes face similar hefty fines and/or a prison sentence of up to 5 years.

While uncommon, there have been instances where foreigners have been deported from Thailand for vaping.

In February 2019, a French woman in Phuket was fined 40,000 baht and deported after being stopped when holding an e-cigarette while riding a motorcycle.

In August 2019, a Dutch man in Pattaya was fined 30,000 baht for using an e-cigarette.

For tourists traveling to Thailand, it is important they are familiar with the laws regarding vaping and e-cigarettes.

The websites of Thai embassies and consulates around the world now clearly display information about the prohibition of e-cigarettes in Thailand.

The information reads:

“While electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are used around the world as a way of helping people quit

“Likewise, travel agents or tour operators selling Thailand as a destination should make sure their clients are aware of the ban in place on electronic cigarettes”.

Meanwhile, the websites of foreign governments now also advise travellers not to take e-cigarettes to Thailand.

For British nationals, the Foreign Office clearly advises travelers not to bring vapes and e-cigarettes to Thailand.

The Foreign Office website reads: “These items are likely to be confiscated and you could be fined or sent to prison for up to 10 years if convicted.

“The sale or supply of e-cigarettes and similar devices is also banned and you could face a heavy fine or up to five years imprisonment if found guilty. Several British Nationals have been arrested for possession of vaporisers and e-cigarettes.”

THAILAND TO DOWNGRADE COVID-19 AS A DISEASE FROM OCT 1

Thailand also has sufficient stocks of vaccine and the majority of the population has been vaccinated, Ms Traisuree added.

COVID-19 has also been taken off the list of prohibited diseases for foreigners entering or staying in Thailand.

disease transmission for five days, such as by wearing face masks, social distancing and regularly washing their hands. However, they will not be required to self isolate from Oct 1.

Thailand has downgraded COVID-19 to an “infectious disease under watch” effective Oct 1, the government has announced.

The downgrading, which has been published in the Royal Gazette, comes as the number of infections in the country continues to fall, with severe symptoms, hospitalisations and fatalities also declining.

As of October 1, Thailand will reclassify COVID-19 from a “dangerous infectious disease” to an “infectious disease under watch,” Deputy Government Spokesperson Traisuree Traisoranakul confirmed.

This means that from Oct 1 people traveling to Thailand will no longer be required to show their COVID-19 vaccination certificates or test results, while infected people with mild or no symptoms will not be required to enter a period of isolation.

The changes were confirmed by Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who said the new classification for COVID-19 will remain in place until September next year.

Meanwhile, Dr Sophon Iamsirithaworn, deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control said the measures regarding COVID-19 were being relaxed because symptoms are typically not severe and are similar to those of a common cold.

Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 is advised to follow strict precautions to prevent

State of emergency ends, CCSA dissolved October 1 also sees the lifting of the state of emergency which had been put in place to cope with the pandemic, while the country’s COVID-19 taskforce, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration will be dissolved.

Spokesperson Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin said the CCSA had resolved to end the state of emergency, which had been in place since March 24, 2020. Dr Taweesilp said the CCSA would be dissolved because both the local and global COVID-19 situation has improved, with both the number of new cases and fatalities declining.

“People and businesses have resumed normal activities and the Public Health Ministry is redefining Covid-19 as a communicable disease under surveillance, instead of a dangerous communicable disease,” Dr Taweesilp said.

The government will continue to provide free COVID-19 vaccinations to members of the public. However, any other response to COVID-19 is now under the jurisdiction of public health officials, rather than a dedicated taskforce.

The fund will help tourists in the event of an emergency, such as accidents, sudden sickness or death.

death, the tourist’s family would be eligible for maximum compensation of up to 1 million baht.

Thai nationals would be exempt from paying the fee.

Critics say the fee would potentially put people off from visiting Thailand in favour of other destinations.

However, those in favour say such a fee is a good way to generate additional income for the Thai economy and help to make its tourism industry more sustainable.

TheCabinet is set to rule on whether Thailand will start charging international tourists a fee to enter the country.

According to Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, the Cabinet will be asked to consider implementing the fee, dubbed the “Thailand Traveller Fee”, during a meeting scheduled for some time in October.

Mr Phiphat said that a study into the proposed fee is complete and will be presented to the Cabinet.

If approved, the Cabinet could order the immediate collection of the fee or it could request collection of the fee be postponed.

Under the current proposals, foreigners arriving in Thailand by air would be charged 300 baht, while those arriving by land, sea or rail could be charged between 100 and 200 baht.

“If the Cabinet approves the fees, we will start to collect the fees soon,” Mr Phipat said.

Tourism fee a question of when, not if

Speaking to Thai language media, Mr Phipat said that there is a legal requirement for Thailand to implement the so-called tourism fee and therefore the existing proposal can not be scrapped.

Mr Phipat said that the fee had already been approved by the previous government and forms part of the National Tourism Policy Act of 2019 and must be enforced.

One of the things the Cabinet must decide is when collection of the fee will come into effect.

The revenue generated from the fee will go towards a number of different uses, such as

Between 20172019, the Thai government spent more than 700 million baht compensating the Public Health Ministry after uninsured foreign tourists had received medical treatment in Thailand but had left the country without paying their bills.

Mr Phipat said that a memorandum of understanding has been signed with Krung Thai Bank to implement a payment system to facilitate the collection of the fee and handle transactions via a website, smartphone application and via air ticketing systems.

Previous proposals of the fee stated that tourists would be eligible for a maximum of 500,000 baht for medical expenses should they have an accident or fall ill.

Many countries around the world, including Switzerland, Japan, New Zealand, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal and Bali in Indonesia, as well as most Caribbean islands, have implemented some form of tourist tax.

NEW BANKSY EXHIBITION

COMING TO BANGKOK

For anyone visiting Bangkok between October and the end of the year, a new exhibition showcases the work of Banksy, regarded by many as the world’s greatest graffiti artist.

The Art of Banksy: Without Limits will be held at MOCA Bangkok from October 26 to December 31 and will feature more than 150 certified originals by the artist.

Banksy’s work is synonymous with being anti authoritarian, disruptive, satirical and thought provoking in its nature.

Very little is known about Banksy himself, as he refuses to be interviewed and carefully maintains his anonymity.

A number of claims have been made over Banksy’s identity, fuelling media interest. Most recently, many sources, including an entire newspaper publication, suggested he was a Bristol native by the name of Robin Gunninham.

Though the prospect of uncovering Banksy’s identity would allow for a greater understanding

of his motives and mission, no claim had ever been confirmed. His identity has reputedly even been concealed from his family.

FIVE MILLION TOURISTS VISITED PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN FROM JAN-JUL 2022

Prachuap

Khiri Khan received just over 5 million tourists in the first seven months of the year, it has been announced.

At a meeting of the joint public-private sector committee to develop and solve economic prob lems in the province, the provincial governor, Mr. Sathien Charoenruen said that approximately 5.1 million tourists had visited the province from January to July 2022.

Overwhelmingly, the people visiting the prov ince were domestic tourists, the data revealed.

Of the tourists to visit the province from Jan uary to July, approximately 5 million were Thai tourists making domestic trips, while just over 40,000 were foreign tourists.

The tourists generated a total of 17,442 mil lion baht in revenue, which was divided into 17 billion baht from Thai tourists and 400 million baht from foreign tourists, Mr. Sathien said.

The figures released on the number of tourists visiting the province came at the same time as the Ministry of Tourism and Sports revealed which provinces earned the highest amount of revenue from tourism in the first half of 2022.

The 17,442 million baht in revenue generat ed from tourism in Prachuap Khiri was the fifth highest among the other provinces in Thailand, behind Bangkok (135,126 million baht), Phuket (60,302 million baht), Chonburi (41,850 million baht) and Chiang Mai (30,050 million baht).

Prachuap Khiri Khan was not alone in tourism revenue overwhelmingly being generated from domestic tourists.

Only Bangkok, where 42 percent of the tour ism revenue generated from tourism came from foreign tourists, and Phuket, where 85 percent of tourism revenue was generated from foreign tourists bucked the trend.

Most tourists to Thailand from Malaysia

In addition, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has released data on the number of foreign tourists arriving in Thailand during the first eight months of the year.

TAT said a total of 4,635,418 foreign tourists arrived in Thailand from January 1 - August 31, 2022.

A total of 647,648 tourists from Malaysia ac counted for the largest group of foreign arrivals in Thailand in July, according to TAT governor Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn.

India (449,236 people) accounted for the second largest group, followed by Lao PDR (276,924), Singapore (242,220), Cambodia (228,846), United Kingdom (211,016), Vietnam (205,687), United States (191,404), South Korea (187,792) and Germany (159,639).

Most visitors from Malaysia arrived overland, through the Sadao border crossing in Songkhla province, Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn said.

As expected, Thailand’s major airports welcomed most foreign tourists: Suvarnabhumi Airport (2,596,319 people), Phuket Airport (719,886), Don Mueang Airport (223,776), Sadao (223,776) and Nong Khai (129,699).

8-10 million tourist arrivals expected in 2022

Meanwhile, Thailand still expects between 8 million and 10 million foreign tourist arrivals this year after reopening the country to visitors.

According to Mr. Anucha Burapachaisri, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister, Thailand is on course to welcome up to 10 million foreign tourists by the end of the year.

The projection was also echoed by Finance Min ister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith who spoke recently on the Radio Thailand programme.

Measures which come into effect from October 1 are also expected to result in an increase in the number of foreigners arriving in the country this year.

From October, Thailand will allow foreign tourists to stay in the country longer than was previously possible.

Tourists from more than 50 countries (including the UK, USA, Australia and Sweden) who arrive in Thailand on a visa exempt will be able to stay in Thailand for 45 days, an increase from the previous 30 days.

At the same time, tourists from one of 19 countries arriving in Thailand on the Visa on Arrival scheme (which includes India, Saudi Arabia and, ordinarily, China) will be extended from 15 to 30 days.

The longer visas for tourists are effective from October 1 until March 31, 2023.

million baht, or 2.5 million baht per train, in transporting the trains from Japan to Thai land, with another 200,000 baht per train spent on materials and modifications.

Using the trains donated from Japan helped to save the SRT a significant amount of money when compared to what it cost to buy brand new trains.

Mr Nirut said it was about 400 times cheaper to use the donated trains when compared to buying new, which will cost in the region of 80-100 million baht per carriage.

External renovation of the train has also been carried out, which includes new lights being installed, modified steps and repainting and polishing.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has given a glimpse of the new train carriages, which are earmarked for use to a number of destinations, including Hua Hin.

SRT governor Nirut Maneephan said the four-bogey train may be used for trips from Bang kok to places like Sai Yok Falls in Kanchanaburi, Hua Hin or the Pasak Dam in Lopburi.

“SRT hopes the KIHA 183 trains will play a big part in promoting tourism in Thailand,” he said.

“They will offer tourists a brand new experience.”

The 17 second-hand diesel KIHA 183 locomotive trains were donated by the Japanese Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) back in December 2021.

Of the 17 air-conditioned diesel locomotives, eight can seat 40 passengers, eight can seat 68 passengers and one carriage has 52 seats.

Mr Nirut revealed the SRT spent a total of 42.5

He added that the test runs of the trains have successfully been conducted on the Makkasan-Chachoengsao-Bangkok route where the train comfortably reached a maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

All of the trains are expected to be fully opera tional by late 2023 and will be in use for the next 15 to 20 years.

A further trial of the new trains will then take place in October along other routes in Thailand.

The trial will begin with SRT soliciting feedback in order to evaluate where the trains will be used.

Initially, the service will be limited to short routes of less than 300 kilometers, such as the Sai Yok Wa terfall in Kanchanaburi Province, Hua Hin, and the Pa Sak Jolasid Dam in Lopburi Province.

Mr Nirut also gave further details on the first phase of the renovation that has been carried on an initial 13 of the 17 trains.

This includes inspecting the engine operation

In the second phase, the SRT will completely overhaul the trains by changing wheels, bear ings, engines, electrical systems, brakes and air-conditioning so they can be used for long-haul services, Mr Nirut said. The overhaul may take two years to complete, he added.

If Hua Hin is one of the routes used for the trains, they will be in operation on the new dual track rail line that is currently being built and which is not far from completion.

The section of the track in Hua Hin forms part of the Southern line that will eventually connect Nakhon Pathom with Chumphon, a distance of 421 kilometers, a distance of 421 kilometers.

WHAT ORGANS DOES CIRRHOSIS OF THE LIVER AFFECT?

Theliver functions similarly to a large factory that secretes immense volumes of diverse com pounds into the bloodstream. The liver is an organ that can regenerate its own cells. However, its regeneration or repair may be inadequate, making recovery less effective. As a result, when the liver gets inflamed to cirrhosis, healing becomes worse and more complex.

Cirrhosis starts as an inflammation in the liver that goes into chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation often causes fibrosis due to the liver attempting to repair itself. Cirrhosis then occurs from the liver having fibrosis for a lengthy period. Cirrhosis is associated with a drastic decrease in the egg white protein (albumin), the liver’s main product. Albumin retains water. It allows blood to flow through capillaries without any humor/fluid leaking. When albumin is diminished, the humor/fluid seeps out and accumulates throughout the body, particularly under the skin, causing edema.

Furthermore, the liver has various functions. One is converting ammonia, which is poisonous to the organism, to urea, which is less poisonous and flows out with urine. This function is disrupted when the liver is damaged. As a result, converting ammonia to urea is impracticable, causing high levels of ammonia to enter the bloodstream and circulate to other organs, including the brain. The brain is an ammonia-sensitive organ. When ammonia enters the blood arteries of the brain, the brain malfunctions! Thus, we would feel worn out, lose attention, and have difficulty communicating. The symptoms can be bad enough to put you in a coma. How hazardous is that?!

The next organ that would be affected is the kidney. Because blood can no longer flow into the liver due to cirrhosis, hence, it tries to find a new route, a shortcut, which is the gastrointestinal tract. However, since it is a shortcut, it’s small and narrow, with several little tracks. As a result, it would ultimately overflow and explode like a broken dam. Once breached, bacteria and germs from the stomach would flow into circulation. As a result, white blood cells that remove or kill germs start producing and releasing inflammatory substances. This causes blood vessels to dilate, resulting in decreased blood flow to the kidneys, which, combined with the germs from the gastrointestinal tract and stomach, can induce acute renal failure.

That’s not all. The kidney damage might extend to the lungs as well. Because inflammatory agents cause blood vessels to dilate, the blood vessels surrounding the lungs may also dilate. As a result, the oxygen exchange in the lungs deteriorated because the blood flowed too quickly for oxygen to be exchanged. Furthermore, if the body creates compounds that constrict blood vessels and spread out to the lungs, it would cause the lungs to constrict. When the lungs contract, blood flow from the right ventricle to the lungs is impeded, resulting in right-sided heart failure. Thus, lung insufficiency also worsens the heart’s condition.

As you can see, if the liver stops functioning properly, other organs worsen one by one as well. So now that you know how vital our liver is, don’t forget to take care of the liver. Don’t damage it to the point where it can’t heal itself anymore. Something just can’t be recovered.

TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE: BELL’S PALSY

Bell's palsy is a neurological disorder that causes facial paralysis. This condition frequently affects only one side of the face. Bell's palsy is caused by damage to the facial nerve, which controls the muscles on the face. Bell's palsy affects everyone, but it is most common in young adults, the elderly, diabetics, and pregnant women.

What caused Bell's Palsy?

Bell's palsy occurs when the nerve that controls the facial muscles is swollen, inflamed, or compressed, resulting in facial weakness or paralysis. Precisely what causes this damage, however, is unknown. Most researchers believe that a viral infection such as viral meningitis or the common cold sore virus, herpes simplex causes the disorder. The disorder has also been associated with influenza or a flu-like illness, headaches, chronic middle ear infection, high blood pressure, diabetes, sarcoidosis, tumors, Lyme disease, and trauma such as skull fracture or facial injury.

How Does Acupuncture Treat Bell's Palsy?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the

diagnosis for Bell's palsy is termed "External WindCold attacking the channels of the face". According to TCM principles, one of the main implications of this condition is an underlying Qi (a person's inherent en ergy) deficiency. Wei Qi is a specific form of energy that protects us from external pathogens. If Wei Qi is weak (maybe due to stress, exhaustion, cold air blowing directly on the face, or recent illness), it can be dispersed by a substantial invasion of Wind, allowing Cold to enter the head and slow things down.

Electroacupuncture has been wide ly used in assisting patients suffering from "Facial Palsy". This technique can stimulate facial nerve and moves facial muscles. Consistent acupuncture treatments (usually recommended twice per week) can help soothe a patient and expedite the resolution of paralysis, and enhance nerve function.

Patients suffering from Bell's palsy may have several weeks of recovery time. Traditional Chinese Medicine and holistic healing have several options, from Chinese herbal remedies to massage and acupuncture to vitamin

supplements, that patients may wish to investigate during their recovery.

LIVE FULLY, MOVE PLENTY: HOW TO AVOID A SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE

I call the guide: “LIVE STRONG”. My definition of “LIVE STRONG” is living a life with no health limitations.

To LIVE STRONG is really straightforward and accessible to every single person reading this.

To LIVE STRONG you need to focus on three fundamentals: a healthy body, a healthy mind and some healthy food.

The Body:

Take care of your heart

●Do at least 2-3 times low intensity activity a week (at least 60min). A low intensity activity can be a walk, a gentle run, a bike ride or anything that slightly elevates your heart rate and your breathing.

●At least once a week, do a high intensity cardio activity. The best way to do it safely and without risking injury would be sprinting on a (stationary) bike, inclined walk on a treadmill or outdoors. For beginners, I usually recommend the following process, 20min warm up, followed up by 3-4 sets of 20s sprint and 40s recovery on a stationary bike.

●The usual answer I get when advising people to do this, is “I will have a heart attack”.

A highly decorated athlete, he is ranked among the top 10 triathletes in Thailand.

He is based in Hua Hin and can help you become the best version of yourself.

Continuing his monthly health and fitness feature for Hua Hin Today, Romain shares tips on how to avoid living a sedentary lifestyle.

Connect with Romain on Facebook and start your journey to a better you @Health CoachRomain

During the pandemic, several studies have shown a decrease in people engaging in physical activity and an increase in people living a more sedentary lifestyle.

It is perhaps not surprising when you consider things such as the closure of gyms and fitness facilities, as well as lockdowns and restrictions on ‘non-essential’ travel.

But while the pandemic was a brutal change for many people, people living a more sedentary lifestyle was occurring well before COVID-19.

Unfortunately, living a sedentary lifestyle increases all causes of mortality, doubles the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity, and increases the risks of colon cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, depression and anxiety. I could go on.

Yet there is a really simple and easy fix for people who live a sedentary lifestyle - start moving.

After years of working with clients and after reading more scientific reviews on health and wellness than I care to remember, I have developed my own guide on living a less sedentary and more active lifestyle.

●Actually it decreases your risk of having one, it decreases your blood pressure, lower your resting heart rate and increases your lifespan among other benefits.

Take care of your muscle:

●Muscle mass starts decreasing after you turn 30 years old, so the only way to keep it on, is to exercise. That’s why I recommend doing at least 2 strength training sessions a week in order to retain muscle mass, but also boost your mood, improve cognitive performance, boost your metabolism, and increase bone density.

The Mind:

● Stress: A very important factor to keep your mind healthy and happy is to understand how to manage stress. I am purposely using “manage” stress and not “avoid” as stress is unavoidable AND it’s a needed factor to grow, to develop your brain’s ability to manage various kinds of situations.

Also after we reach 30 years old, our brain starts to shrink and with it our ability to learn and do other complex mental activities. So it’s important to keep stressing our brain to slow down the degradation.

A good way to deal with stress is to take a step back every time you face a stressful situation. Try to use it as an opportunity for growth and a way to become better at managing difficult situations. I personally adapted this mindset, it is not always easy but I have been amazed at how much easier it now is to deal with stressful situations.

That said, there are a lot of ways to avoid useless stressful situations, such as decreasing our screen time, avoiding phone time right before and after bed.

● Sleep: A healthy mind is a rested mind, as simple as that. You will not achieve anything great in life by doing sleepless nights. Prioritize your sleep, aiming to sleep around 8-10 hours per night. It needs discipline and focus but the benefits are worth it.

Food:

Eat less processed food and more real food:

The Mediterranean diet and Japanese diet are recognized as some of the healthiest diets. They are both rich in protein, vegetables and healthy fat (fish, olive oil) with very little processed foods.

Making a small, yet simple change to your diet can have a massively positive impact on your overall health and wellbeing.

THAILAND BECOMES FIRST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD TO MANUFACTURE COVID ANTIBODY SPRAY

Available for commer cial sale from October 1, the spray will be sold under the brand name “VAILL COVITRAP An ti-Cov Nasal Spray”.

The spray works by coating the nasal cavities with HPMC to reduce the amount of the virus and prevent it from entering the body through the holes of the nose. It can be applied up to three times per day, or every six hours.

and help people protect themselves from infection.

Recently, the two sectors teamed up to develop an antibody-based nasal spray, which serves as the latest shield in offering extra protection against Covid-19.

The breakthrough was transferred to the private sector which carried out clinical research to meet the standards needed for registration with the Thai FDA.

Thaiscientists have developed an anti-viral nasal spray that can help stop COVID-19 infections by neutralising the coronavirus when it enters the nose.

The spray has been developed as part of a joint effort between Chulalongkorn University, Silpakorn University, the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI), the Government Phar maceutical Organization (GPO) and Hibiocy Co Ltd, an affiliate of Roujukiss International PCL or KISS.

“The Covid-19 situation in many countries including Thailand is now in a stable condition. But it’s imper ative that Thailand continues to watch the situation, trends and figures closely, as we adapt to live with the coronavirus,” said HSRI Managing Director Dr Nopporn Cheanklin.

Over the past two years, Thai scientists and researchers from the public and private sectors have worked together to develop a range of protective and diagnostic tools in a bid to curb the spread of the virus

The antibodies that were created to make the spray have been already patented. They have been used to make an antibody-based nasal spray sold under the trade name “Vaill CoviTRAP Anti-CoV Nasal Spray”, making Thailand the first country in the world to approve the commercial manufacturing of the spray.

“The project’s success is a testament to Thai land’s strong commitment to overcoming the pandemic as well as to its efficient work and high-quality health personnel,” Dr Nopporn says.

The news comes as regulators in both China and India have also both given the greenlight to a new generation of vaccines that can be sprayed or inhaled, rather than injected.

ANDREANNA’S BAKERY: HUA HIN’S HOME FOR FRESHLY MADE BREAD AND DELICIOUS ROAST DINNERS

200 to 2,000 people per sitting - that could be three times per day”.

“You’re in at the deep end and it was a lot of work but that training gave me all the foundation I needed to have a career as a chef”.

- Andy starts around 3am.

In addition, there are freshly made sandwiches, daily specials, including fish and chips and a large breakfast menu.

It

might seem hard to believe now but there was a time when decent bread was hard to find in Hua Hin.

Outside of the five star hotels and a couple of local bakeries, which understandably catered more towards local tastes, the only other alternative was the mass produced fare found at a local supermar ket or convenience store.

That’s not the case today, with Hua Hin now home to several excellent bakeries.

But there’s one person who was arguably there before all the others and who it could be said helped to kick start Hua Hin’s mini bakery revolution.

Andy Cook, who has been living in Thailand for the last fourteen years, runs the popular Andrean na’s Bakery and Restaurant in Khao Takiab.

Andy, who is a trained chef with more than three decades of experience, has seen his career take him from the UK to Ireland, across Thailand and via a stint in Myanmar, before settling in Hua Hin around seven years ago.

“Growing up, my family had pubs and hotels in the UK, so it has been part of my life from an early age. I’m a chef by trade, with 35 years experience and sided towards bakery,” Andy told Hua Hin To day.

Andy’s career started in earnest when he joined the Royal Air Force as a chef at the age of 20.

“Joining the forces as chef meant I was not only trained to a high standard but also learned about professionalism and discipline”, Andy explained.

“We’d often have to cater for anywhere between

After leaving the forces, the next chapter of Andy’s life found him in Ireland and it was here where he began to hone his baking skills.

He completed an advanced pastry course at GMIT Galway, now known as the Atlantic Technological University.

Later, Andy would run a bed and breakfast and fishing lodge at Lough Corrib in west Ireland, as well as working as a pastry and sous chef at a seafood restaurant in Galway.

After his arrival in Thailand, Andy was the opening chef at the popular Blue Mango Bar and Grill in Phuket and later spent six months dividing his time between Thailand and Myanmar where he worked aboard a luxury river cruise boat.

But it was in Hua Hin where he really began to make his mark, helping to open several of the town’s bakeries, many of which are still operating today.

An opportunity to set up on his own was too good to turn down, and Andreanna’s Bakery, named after his daughter, opened.

From its location in the Navio Huahin Condominium in Khao Takiab, Andreanna’s Bakery specialises in quality breads, in cluding sourdough and white sourdough, pies and pastries, all of which are freshly baked every morning

Today, Andy’s customers range from the elderly expat with a fondness for Apple pie to a variety of eateries from Hua Hin to Bangkok.

“We are really busy on the wholesale side of things. I have customers who have been with me since I first opened and have stayed with me ever since”, Andy said.

If you have not eaten Andy’s bread, burger buns, pies, pizza bases, baguettes or pastries from An dreanna’s Bakery, the chances are you will have eaten them from one of the many restaurants he supplies throughout Hua Hin.

Andreanna’s Bakery is also well known for its Sunday roast dinners of either pork, butter roasted chicken, New Zealand lamb and prime Australian beef, which cost from 220 baht to 480 baht.

All are served with Yorkshire pudding, creamy mashed potatoes, vegetables, stuffing and choice of sauces.

“It’s always advisable to book in advance for the Sunday carvery. Even our regulars have to book”, Andy says.

And for anyone wanting a custom cake for a celebration such as a wedding or a birthday, Andy can make those too.

Sport EXPAT STARTS HUA HIN’S FIRST AUSSIE RULES TEAM

An Australian expat has started Hua Hin’s first Australian rules football club, based in Hin Lek Fai.

Sixty-two year old Greg Wass, ‘Wassy’ to his mates, is passionate about introducing the sport of Aussie Rules to people in the local community - both Thais and expats.

“Anyone who wants to kick the footie should come down”, Wassy told Hua Hin Today.

Wassy has agreed the use a local school field, with training sessions involving a group of local school children already underway.

The idea of starting an Aussie Rules football club came during a conversation over a few beers with friends.

“They told me, if you’re going to do it, do it properly, that was only a few weeks ago and now here we are”, Wassy said.

Since Wassy first had the idea, things have really started to gather pace.

First he had to come up with a name: the Black Mountain AFL Club, nicknamed the Black Mountain Blues, after his beloved Carlton Football Club.

More of a challenge was finding equipment, Wassy says it is almost impossible to buy genuine AFL footballs in Thailand.

Wassy, who has a long history in AFL back in his hometown of Mildura, Victoria, where he had been an umpire since the age of 15, reached out to contacts who were able to supply him with Sheerin footballs.

“We’ll have a total of six footies eventually, and we have had 24 shirts supplied to us from sponsors,” Wassy said.

“We also got a couple of Acme Thunderers, which are the Rolls Royce of whistles for anyone who doesn’t know”, Wassy explained.

In need of coaches

Regarding coaching, Wassy has been assisted by fellow expat Phil Evans, who runs the popular Paradise Punks motorcycle club, which as well as providing a group for expats to meet and socialise in Hua Hin, also raises money for school children from underprivileged communities.

Wassy said eventually he would like the Black Mountain AFL Club to hold weekly training for kids in the area.

“I have already been speaking to a couple of guys about coaching, but they seem pretty interested”.

Wassy said that if any other coaches are reading this, then they should contact him.

As should anyone with an interest in Aussie Rules is welcome to get involved, especially expat parents who are interested in getting their children to take part in the sport.

Wassy also revealed that the first of 24 official club jerseys have been presented to players, while a sponsor from Netherlands has agreed to supply another 24 jerseys.

In true Aussie style, Wassy formally kicked off the Black Mountain AFL Club with an open day and ‘sausage sizzler’ BBQ which was held from the newly formed clubhouse in Hin Lek Fai on Sept 9.

Anyone interested to find out more about the Black Mountain AFL Club can contact Greg Wass via Facebook.

MRS. NATIONAL UNIVERSE 2022 CROWNED IN BANGKOK

After a two year Covid hiatus, the second edition of Mrs. National Universe took place in Bangkok from September 11th to the 14th

The women came from around the world, representing The United States, Japan, Belarus, Philippines, Laos, Kenya, Czech Republic, India, Thailand, Russia, Puerto Rico, & Sweden. The candidates were judged over the 4-day period on their social skills, confidence, personality, communication skills, on and off stage presentation, on and off camera presentation, runway skills, English speaking ability and more.

The ladies landed in Thailand on the 11th of September and checked into the Amari Watergate Bangkok hotel, the

official host hotel for the pageant. Their first event was a sashing ceremony where Khun Sukamal Mondal, the General Manager of the Amari Watergate Bangkok individually welcomed each contestant and presented them with their official country sash. This was followed by a welcome dinner for the contestants, media, hotel management & organizing staff.

Over the four-day period the women participated in a cooking competition overseen by Chef Marco, the head chef of the Amari’s Italian Restaurant Prego. The ladies also took part in a contemporary Thai flower making contest, overseen by Thailand’s top florist Sakul Inthakul.

On the 13th, the ladies, along with national and international media, boarded a coach for a day trip to Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom.

A capacity crowd was on hand as the Grand Final night took place in the ballroom of the Amari Watergate. The evening started with Mister National Universe 2022 Mr. Viet Hoang from Vietnam entertaining the crowd with a high energy dance number. Thai socialite, businesswoman and philanthropist, Khun Sumanee Guna Kasem, the honorary chairwoman for the pageant, then gave the opening address. After the first round of questions and the evening gown competition, the judges took their scores, along with the scores from the previous days and announced the top 5 contestants. STREAMING NOW: THAI CAVE RESCUE IS THE NEW MUST WATCH SERIES ON NETFLIX

The rescue of 12 junior football players and their coach from a flooded cave system in Chiang Rai in 2018 remains one of the most awe-inspiring stories of recent years.

The world was captivated by the astonishing rescue of the ‘Wild Boars’ football team who spent 18 days trapped deep inside the Tham Luang Cave complex, as an international team made up of expert divers desperately tried to rescue them.

Now, a new series which is currently streaming on Netflix, tells the extraordinary story of the rescue.

Thai Cave Rescue is a six part mini series and comes just a month Amazon released its feature length film on the rescue, Thirteen Lives.

The latest retelling is at least the fourth interpretation of the event told by broadcasters.

However, Netflix says that Thai Cave Rescue tells the story in a way it has not been told before and from a Thai perspective by taking a closer look at the young players and their families.

Filmed entirely in Thailand, the show features exclusive insights from the young members of the Wild Boars football team and their experiences at the limit of human endurance, as well as the experiences of their families and the vast global team that came together to save them.

Netflix says some of the scenes

were even shot inside the boy’s actual homes.

Created by Michael Russell Gunn (Billions, Designated Survivor) and Dana Ledoux Miller (Designated Survivor, Narcos), the six-episode limited series is directed by Baz Poonpiriya (One for the Road, Bad Genius) and Kevin Tancharoen (The Brothers Sun, The Book of Boba Fett, Warrior).

Thai Cave Rescue stars an expansive Thai cast led by Papangkorn “Beam” Lerkchaleampote, who sadly passed away in March this year, as Coach Eak, Thaneth “Ek” Warakulnukroh as Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, and Urassaya “Yaya” Sperbund and Manatsanun “Donut” Phanlerdwongsakul as Kelly and Pim - fictional representatives of the real-world hydraulic engineers and park rangers that made the incredible rescue possible. Supakorn “Tok” Kitsuwan also joins the cast as former Navy SEAL diver Saman “Ja Sam” Gunan, while Bloom Varin plays army doctor, Colonel Bhak Loharjun.

As for the boys, the majority of the cast is made up of Northern Thai actors, which helps to add authenticity as their accents reflected the area they were representing. Despite the series marking some of their debut roles, the child actors portray their counterparts well. Huttaprasuk stands out as Mark, the smallest of the team, who bravely volunteers to be the first to dive out, but is, dejectedly, told he must wait until they can find him a mask that fits. He sadly watches each of his teammates being taken out, leaving him behind. Huttaprasuk is heartbreaking as the last child

rescued – one with the highest risk of fatality due to his size and poor health – in which he forbearing utters, “Let’s find out our fate” before being taken out of the cave.

Thai Cave Rescue also gives credit to the rescuers and engineering teams who took part in the mission, naming all the foreign divers, military personnel and specialists.

The series also dedicates a whole episode to Saman Kunan (Supakorn Kitsuwon), the Navy SEAL who tragically died during the rescue mission. While other interpretations of the story focus more on Kunan’s death, the Netflix version explores his background and in particular his relationship with his loving wife, in what makes for a heartbreaking episode.

Tip - Streaming is available in both Thai and English, but it’s perhaps a better experience when watched with the native Thai audio track with subtitles, instead of the English dub.

Thai Cave Rescue is streaming now on Netflix.

WHALE WATCHING SEASON BEGINS OFF THE PHETCHABURI COAST

Samran beach, but they are also present in the waters along the upper Gulf of Thailand, including in Samut Sakhon at Tambon Bang Taboon.

In Ban Laem, the community along with the Laem Phak Bia Bryde's Whale Society operate tours from Laem Phak Bia Pier, while fishing boats are put on for whale watching from Hat Chao Samran pier.

While it is difficult to predict exactly when and where to spot

by the flock of seagulls which follow them as they also try to feed on the anchovies.

When not feeding, they come to the surface to breathe, inhaling air before submerging again.

In 2012, it was estimated that only 20 remained in the Gulf of Thailand, but now the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources say there are approximately 70 living in the Gulf.

Part of the resurgence of the Byrde’s whales found in local waters has been due to the pandemic, which resulted in a temporary shutdown of activities, reduced human mobility and demand on resources, which in turn allowed marine environments to not only recover but thrive.

October to December offers the best opportunity to see Bryde’s whales off the coast in Phetchaburi.

Between now and the end of the year is peak season for spotting Thailand’s largest mammal, which can be found closer to the shore where it feeds on the abundance of anchovies that are present in the region's waters.

The abundance of fish occurs as fresh water is drained from the mainland by five major rivers: the Mae Klong River, the Tha Chin River, the Phetchaburi River, the Bang Pakong River, and the Chao Phraya River.

The nutrient rich water then becomes the perfect environment for small fish such as anchovies and mackerel, which in turn become a meal for the whales.

The whales are present in Thai waters all year round, although the rainy season offers the best opportunity to see them.

They can be seen throughout the Gulf and even further south near Surin Island in Phang Nga Province and Racha Noi-Racha Yai Island in Phuket.

In Phetchaburi, the Bryde’s whales (pronounced ‘Broo-dess’) can often be seen near Phak Bia Cape in Ban Laem and at Hat Chao

the whales, they are most likely to be seen during high tide and when the water is calm.

Byrde’s whales can grow to approximately 15 metres in length and weigh up to 18 tonnes and are grey and black in colour.

They spend most of their time alone or in pairs, although herds of up to 10 may be seen feeding together.

The whales are sometimes first spotted

If you do go whale watching in Phetchaburi, remember to have your camera ready as you will only have a few seconds to capture the breathtaking moment.

It is always recommended to go whale watching as part of a tour or organised trip and always respect the nature and marine environment.

A tour boat should keep some distance between the whales, ensuring not to disturb them.

Anyone interested in whale watching is advised to contact TAT Phetchaburi for more information (facebook.com/tatphetfanpage).

THE FOREST PARK OFFERING HIKING, NATURE TRAILS AND A CYCLE ROUTE THAT’S JUST A 30 MINUTE DRIVE FROM HUA HIN

steps to the Phanthurat Mirror viewpoint, which once at the summit offers great views out towards Cha Am beach.

The short jaunt takes no more than 15 minutes to reach the summit, as you pass the Nang Phanturat Shrine and Crematorium along the way.

Up until fairly recently, the walkway up to the viewpoint was made of wood and had fallen into a state of disrepair. However, the whole walkway is now much improved with the addition of concrete steps making the route accessible for most people.

The second nature is a little more challenging, but by no means difficult.

Khao

Nang Phanthurat Forest Park in Cha Am has to be one of the best maintained parks in the region

Sometimes you fancy getting outside and immersing yourself in nature, without having to trek too far away.

Luckily, in and around Hua Hin we have some amazing forest parks where you can get your fix of the great outdoors.

Located just a 30 minute drive from Hua Hin in nearby Cha Am is the Khao Nang Phanthurat Forest Park.

It boasts a beautifully landscaped and maintained greenspace, a number of hiking trails, and viewpoints with stunning vistas of Cha Am and the surrounding area.

There are two fairly easy hiking trails that would be suitable for most people.

The shortest trail and the most accessible is the 150 metre climb up recently refurbished concrete

The 3.5 kilometre route takes in a number of viewpoints which offer even better views of the surrounding area.

As well as the three viewpoints, the route offers other points of interest, including an opportunity for bird watching, with the park is home to more than 100 different species of birds.

At the front of the park is a large and beautifully landscaped and maintained area set in front of stunning limestone cliffs which make for a spectacular backdrop.

Khao Nang Phanthurat Forest Park also includes a small coffee shop, visitors centre and plant nursery. There is also the option to camp overnight, provided you contact park officials first and bring your own tent.

Located just outside the entrance to the park is a 10 kilometre bicycle route that circles the perimeter of the park and which is also suitable for runners and walkers.

As is not uncommon for parks and sites of interest in Thailand, Khao Nang Phanthurat is steeped in Thai folklore and tradition.

The name of the park is derived from the "Mae Nang Phanthurat," which is based on a Thai literary tale called "Sangthong."

Legend has it that Phanthurat is a giant who disguised herself as a human in order to adopt "Phra Sang" as her son.

When Phra Sang visited Phanthurat’s secret lair and discovered mountains of dead animals and human bones, he realised that his mother was indeed a monster - well you would, wouldn’t you?

Terrified, Phra Sang then moved to disguise

himself from his mother by dipping into a gold well in order to appear to be a gold coated dead body. He then fled the lair with a magical cane and special glass shoe.

Phra Sang then refused to return to his mother, despite her pleas.

Phanthurat then died before she was able to see her son again.

The story says that Phra Sang cremated his mother and had her ashes buried on the site of what is now the forest park, which is why it is known as Khao Phanthurat.

Anyway, the park is well worth a visit.

Tip - previously the park used to be home to quite a large number of monkeys. We didn’t see any when we visited but it’s something you should perhaps be aware of if you visit.

Entrance to Khao Nang Phanthurat Forest Park is free of charge for both Thais and foreigners. The park is open daily from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
