Senior Margarito Garcia (54, 185) will be the defensive field general at middle linebacker, making sure his colleagues are lined up correctly and understanding the calls. He will be joined by fellow senior linebacker Adam Perez. Frutoso Villarreal will also play a key role at safety, including a 300-pound nose tackle, Joe Torres. “He is going to cause a lot of havoc in there,” Muir said. Muir was an assistant at Brownsville Porter before coming to Santa Maria.

gonna accept anything less than making the playoffs,” Muir said. “We have talent. We’re gonna put the best team on the field every single week. In fact, expectations are probably higher than they’ve ever been.” Players to watch will be Isaac Ortiz (5-8, 143) who was heading into middle school when Santa Maria’s football team disbanded. Now a freshman, he will lead the Cougars return at quarterback. The Cougars will run out of a Maryland I - something not too many teams in the Valley have used or seen in recent years. “There’s a lot of spread teams down here. If we pass we’re gonna use play action. But we’re sitting in an inverted wishbone,” says Muir. Ortiz will have a stable of backs to handoff too, including his older brother, sophomore David Ortiz (5-9, 150), Adam Perez (5-8, 145) and juniors Isai Garcia and Leonel Lugo. (Santa Maria, Texas)-Are you ready for some football? Santa Maria High School sure is. Actually, the entire town seems more than ready. After a two-year hiatus from football following the district’s decision to suspend the sport due to finances, the Cougars are back - and first-year head coach Frank Muir says there’s more than just a buzz in the air. “Everybody’s just thrilled,” said Muir, who coached with the JV team last year. “Santa Maria is a small town and everybody knows everybody and there’s a lot of excitement. We’ve had a lot of support from administration, pretty much giving us everything we need. We’re painting the goalposts and doing renovations,” he adds. And just because the football team is returning to the varsity level, don’t think that the goals are just middle-of-the road for the Cougars. Just talking to the energetic Muir will eliminate those thoughts from anyone’s mind. “Expectations are high - we’re not
