As talk of Monte Alto Blue Devil’s debut into high school football gets louder and louder, one lady approached someone from administration and wanted to get season tickets. “I’ve been an Edcouch-Elsa fan and season-ticket holder for years,” she said. “But I live here. This is my community. I’m releasing those tickets. I want Blue Devil tickets.” “Shoot,” said Monte Alto head coach Roy Garza after sharing that story. “I wish I would’ve been there. I would’ve bought the tickets for her!” That pretty much sums it up. The Blue Devils will join Santa Maria, La Villa and Ben Bolt in District 16-1A Division I. And despite being a first-year varsity program, Garza isn’t shy about what the goals are. “We’re shooting to make
the playoffs,” he said. “I mean, it’s only a four-team district and two teams get to go. Our goal is to beat Santa Maria and La Villa before playing Ben Bolt. The bad thing is, that game is at their place.” “We’re hoping to be over .500 for our first season. Maybe 7-2 or 7-3. That would be a great achievement,” adds Garza. The first-year program surely doesn’t plan to look first year with their offense. The Blue Devils will run out of multiple sets, going from in motion to a full backfield to even the spread at times. “It’s hard if you don’t have the linemen to stay in one power formation,” Garza said. “Depending on what the other team has, we can run on them. If not, we’ll line up in shotgun and go with that.” Projected starting quarterback Frankie Cavazos (5-18, 150) injured his knee in preseason and was awaiting an MRI prior to the first scrimmage of the season. Replacing him will be Mario Gonzalez (5-9, 160), who was slated

Garza said each quarterback brings something different to the formation and both can lineup at receiver. Another player to watch will be Jorge Guajardo (5-10, 158) and Chris Jimenez, who will be the prime wideout targets and Luis Diaz (6-2, 260) will come out of the tight end slot. Diaz will also be the placekicker and Garza said he kicks 40-yard field goals regularly. The key will be getting the offense in position. Garza said about 32 kids came out for the season and he expects a few more still to come out. He’s hoping to get enough for a JV squad too. The Blue Devils open against Anthenaem at home.
