La Villa opens its season against Grulla Gators (Class 3A), Santa Rosa Warriors (2A) and Progreso Red Ants (3A). “We want to have a better season than last year. We don’t want to start slow. IF we can play with those guys to start the season, we’ll have a good season. “We always go first or second-round deep in the playoffs. But we want to keep going.” The Cardinals lost to Grulla 21-14.

Leading the offensive charge with by the Serna triplets - Robert Serna at quarterback, Roman Serna at center and Raymond Serna at guard. Raymond Serna has been starting for La Villa since being a freshman. The Cardinals also have Raymond Garza and Charlie Garza returning along the offensive line. “We’re still running the spread but we’re goon put a little bit of the pro spreads in there,” Perez said. “We put some new plays in there and some plays we really like. The kids already know what’s going on.” Defensively La Villa will line up in a 4-3 but Perez said it could easily change into a 6-1 if needed. Raymond Serna will play the “toothpick” position and is a hard hitter, according to Perez. He will

(La Villa, Tx)-Can new head football coach, Daniel Perez continue the playoff traditions the La Villa Cardinals have experienced since 2002, where they have missed the playoffs just three times (2003, 2004, 2010) and just last season, lost to the eventual State 1A Division I Champions, Mason in the second round of the playoffs. Now, after a 2-6 start last year, the La Villa Cardinals needed a spark at the end to just make the playoffs and turn the year into something positive. District wins against Kenedy (28-12) and Charlotte (63-26) propelled La Villa into the playoffs where they defeated Yorktown 35-18 before falling to eventual state champion Mason 64-20. Take away that Mason score and first-year head coach Danny Perez is hoping to find the same magic La Villa ended the season with. “The kids just started playing a lot better and got all fired up. They were coming together. It was a good run,” said Perez, who previously was defensive coordi-
