NEWSLETTER The Navy drops in

from the Principal Greetings, Tena Koutou Katoa Every year the Board and staff set goals for the school. All our goals relate to the strategic target of “raising for all”. Some of these goals relate to staff, some to students, and some to our wider community. Our student goals are all about increasing engagement. This year’s engagement goals target four areas. Firstly, we will further be developing the use of ICT in our teaching. Students live in a “connected” world and our classrooms need to reflect that. The school is already a nationwide leader in the use of Moodle. Secondly, we will be exploring more ways of providing “authentic learning” opportunities for students. Increasingly there is a need for student learning to have real, practical context and we want to meet that need. Our third goal relates to attendance. Attendance at school and in class is fundamental for engagement and the old adage “you can’t learn if you not here” is true. From day one this year we have been taking a hard line on students arriving late to school and students have responded positively to this initiative.

Staff are reporting a much more settled start to the day. And our fourth goal deals with NCEA. Our NCEA results have improved significantly over the last four years and we have increased the number of the students gaining NCEA. Now our next step is to increase the quality of achievement in NCEA. We will be working with students this year to increase the percentage of students who gain Excellence and Merit grades in the qualification. Our goals and targets are contained in our Charter which is updated every year. Copies are available from the office. Each year our Annual Report reflects on how well we have achieved our goals. Copies of our Annual Report are also available from the office.

Denis Pyatt Principal The ERO team, pictured left, spent a week in the school in March conducting the threeyearly review. Their written report has not yet been received by the BOT but verbal feedback from the ERO team was highly complimentary of the school. The full report should be online within four or five weeks.

Alumni function More than 70 former pupils attended the recent Alumni function in the Staff Room. Foundation pupils Jack Dawber and Des Tomkies recalled helping plough the back fields with Duke the school horse doing the pulling. In those days the roll was 150, not the 1550-plus we now have. Alumni members toured the school and listened to the choir (right) and enjoyed a wine and cheese function. A major focus of the organisation is the 75th Jubilee of the school which will take place in 2011. Albany Peseta, Mr Jones, and Lupe Taufa at the kava ceremony, above. Flags, left, and global cuisine were also enjoyed. The school’s annual International Week provided an opportunity for the more than 40 nationalities in the school to showcase their cultures. An innovation this year was the “Flag of Nations” display and this was followed by a “Parade of Nations” concert in the school hall in which groups from the Cook Islands, Taiwan, China and Ethiopia performed. A further innovation this year was a kava ceremony at which Pacific Island students traditionally welcomed the Head student team and members of staff. The Food Fair, organised by the adult students, was again extremely popular and for the second year in a row the Cook Islands won the Nations volleyball tournament.
