Engineering An associate’s degree in engineering technology will open the door to a lot of wellpaying jobs, as will many of the skilled trades that regularly intersect with engineering and electronics. “In the electrical shop here, it crosses with IT and electronics,” says Mark Flanagan, ODU’s mechanical/electrical superintendent. “The more you know, the more you’re worth,” he says. David Ekker, dean of engineering, mathematics, and industrial technologies at Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus, has witnessed the changing face of today’s technology-driven trades from a front row seat. “As you add technology, the people who build and design and maintain and repair things are expected to have a higher level of education than they did in the past,” he says. One way to enter this field is through a program like TCC’s civil, electronics or industrial engineering technology course of study. Learn more at www.tcc.edu/academics/divisions/eit. ■

Highly-Skilled, Highly Paid: “Gold” Collar Jobs in the Skilled Trades Some of the most in-demand, well-compensated workers today can be found wielding hammers, tuning engines, running wire and welding panels. A generation ago, the skilled trades were a well-trod path into long-term, satisfying careers. After being overlooked for many years, the field has gained a fresh relevance as employers scramble to fill a growing number of openings. “The need for skilled tradespeople has very quickly outpaced the supply of workers, so the money is very good,” notes Harlan Krepcik, HVAC program head at Tidewater Community College. Krepcik sits on the board of directors for several trade organizations where colleagues have their own way of classifying the trades – “They no longer refer to them as blue collar jobs; now they’re gold collar jobs. The demand for workers is just that high.” Dennis Brakeville, Tidewater Tech’s director of education, agrees. “The trades are definitely undermanned,” he says. “Our graduates don’t have a hard time finding work – we have employers in here all the time.” The school not only hosts local recruiters but out-of-towners as well, Brakeville says. “We have a shipyard from Pascagoula, Miss., that comes up just about once a month for welders because they are in such dire need. It’s crazy.” In an age of economic uncertainty, that’s welcome news to job hunters looking for long-term career stability and a hefty paycheck – just call it the gold collar choice. ■

AUTO MECHANIC

Experienced with own tools, 5 day work week, no weekends. Top pay. Apply in person

AUTO PEMBROKE SALES 4753 VA. Beach Blvd

Automotive Mechanic How much has the field of automotive mechanics changed over just the past decade? “Even the wrenches are shaped differently – they’re made to fit your hand ergonomically so you don’t develop joint problems after 20 or so years of using them on the job,” says Mark Maund, the auto program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. Computerized diagnostic equipment has been in place awhile now, but even that is seeing significant upgrades. “It’s wireless,” says Maund. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard. Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.” Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. Tidewater Tech’s program takes 45 weeks to complete, and Maund regularly places graduates in local dealerships and independent repair shops, sometimes before they’ve even finished the program. “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will find work if you want it – and it will be a career, it won’t be a job,” Maund says. “A lot of our students go on to become master techs while others are really interested in one or two particular areas, so they’ll focus on say engine performance or electrical troubleshooting, get certified in those, and go on to have good careers as specialists.” Those with entrepreneurial leanings often open their own shops. “As long as you have the people skills and pick up some business knowledge so you’ll know how to handle things like the taxes and the benefits, you can definitely go into business for yourself,” says Maund. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 9% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2022, with a median hourly pay rate of $17.60. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $60,070 a year. ■

Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. People who work in this field often acquire a diverse set of skills. “I have general maintenance technicians that I send to school to learn about bearing and lubrication or motor alignment, things like that,” says Mark Flanagan, ODU’s mechanical/electrical superintendent. “The trades are not a dead end job. I think they open the doors to whatever you’re interested in. I came into the trades as a helper, then went to school and gained experience,” he says. John McCarthy, the welding program coordinator at Tidewater Tech, tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a healthy job growth rate in the maintenance trades of 9% through 2022. ■

Truck Drivers Whether putting drivers on the road or placing logistics staff behind a desk, the transportation industry is creating truckloads of jobs. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2022 the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs to jump by 11% for tractor-trailer drivers and 22% for logisticians. Why the heavy need to fill more driver seats and bring more logisticians on board? “Everything we consumers buy is at some point transported by a tractor-trailer driver,” explains Sarah Biden, with Napa Transportation. “We will always need food in the stores.” Francis McComas, vice president of MCO Transport, agrees – “Take a look around the room that you’re sitting in and name one thing in the room that was not transported by truck at one point or another, whether it’s the handle on the door or the glass on the picture frames.” To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs that can be completed in as little as four weeks. The pay can be quite good, says Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. “Most of our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year, but a seasoned truck driver with maybe five years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” Woods says. “And a lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers

Branscome Inc. is looking for qualified candidates for the following opportunities: -

so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families.” Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” Woods says. At Napa Transportation, Biden says she regularly sees female drivers. Truckers today can expect to drive wellappointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing technology. Some trucks are even equipped with an automatic transmission and cruise control. It may be a global economy, but it’s the transportation companies, the logisticians and, ultimately, the truck drivers who keep that supply line functioning. “It’s an opportunity to provide a service essential to your community and to help keep the economy going,” says McComas. “And you get a chance to see the country and get paid while doing so,” adds Biden. “It’s a very independent job.” ■

Construction Skilled tradespeople in the construction industry are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. “We’ve been very fortunate in this area,” says Mike Iacobellis, a licensed electrician and director of the Tidewater Electrical Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee ( JATC). “Our contractors do an array of work – industrial, commercial, a lot of government work – so we were able to keep all of our apprentices employed as well as our journeymen during the downturn.” Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 34% through 2022. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, solar panel installers, carpenters and cement masons are expected to increase by 20-29% through that same period. Insulation installation jobs are projected to grow by 38%. Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Another option is the Tidewater Building Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally. Learn more about the academy at 757-420-2566. ■

HVAC Technician Along with well-paid and technologicallysavvy, HVAC techs can also lay claim to most wanted status. “The current statistics from the Department of Labor show that the demand for HVAC technicians outpaces all other trades, and that’s true in Virginia as well as in the United States and Canada,” says Harlan Krepcik, HVAC program head at Tidewater Community College. This need for more workers shows no sign of weakening any time soon. “The average age of an HVAC technician is 56, 57 years,” Krepcik says. “The number of people retiring far exceeds the number of people coming into the trade.” In fact, one of Krepcik’s colleagues recently mentioned that 700,000 HVAC pros were expected to retire in the next five years with only 150,000 anticipated replacements. “I think this included Canada too, but the number seemed staggering,” Krepcik says. “It’s a huge gap.” With strong demand comes equally strong earning power, says Mark Flanagan, ODU’s mechanical/electrical superintendent. “There are

some HVAC technicians that are making close to $100,000 a year,” he says. “You have to go to school to learn your trade and then gain some experience, but once you’ve got that, some of these larger companies are willing to pay you well so they don’t lose you to other businesses.” HVAC techs can be found coaxing a cranky residential air conditioner into cool submission as well as performing critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment. “It’s an enormous field,” Krepcik says. “People in the trade take care of hospitals, highrise buildings, manufacturing plants – over 55 percent of the energy used in the United States is consumed by HVAC equipment.” So if the idea of an in-demand job with generous pay appeals to you, the HVAC trade should go to the top of your career list. ■

Ship Building Just call Hampton Roads shipyard central. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair firms. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fill them. “Many of the people in the shipbuilding industry are beginning to hit retirement age and we don’t have nearly enough workers to replace them,” says Tony Davezan, a recruiting manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. “And the shipbuilding field is flourishing right now,” he adds. “Things aren’t slowing down, they’re picking up. We’re extremely busy.” That means excellent employment opportunities for skilled shipyard workers. “Right now it’s a skilled trades market because there are so many needs in the industry,” Davezan says. “If you’re a first class shipfitter or pipefitter for instance, you can pick and choose where you want to go and what you want to do because it’s all about supply and demand.” There’s enough variety in the shipbuilding and ship repair trades to appeal to a wide range of interests, says Davezan, including electricians, welders, inside and outside machinists, shipfitters, insulators, painters, pipefitters and riggers. Once they learn their craft, skilled tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, much of the management at area shipyards came from the skilled trades. The paychecks can be very good as well. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” reports Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a firm that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.” “This can certainly be a very rewarding career,” Davezan says. “Our challenge right now is getting the word out to people.” ■

Warehouse For job seekers who need to enter the workforce quickly, warehouse openings can be a great option. Many entry-level positions require only a high school diploma, and on-the-job training is common. Most warehouse workers are found in private industry, but the Department of Labor also tracks warehouse hires by federal, state and local governments, so opportunities to work in this sector are broad. Eight-hour shifts are the norm, though warehouses that ship and receive around the clock staff both daytime and overnight shifts. Forklift and tractor operators who load, move and unload materials can expect an annual income of $30,220, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while conveyor operators and tenders earn a median $29,610 per year. Hand laborers and material movers who pick and pack goods bring in an annual wage of $22,970. Delivery truck drivers who make local and regional runs earn $27,530 per year. Material recording clerks track inventory and record shipments, using attention to detail and basic computer skills to keep the warehouse operating smoothly; they make an annual wage of $24,810. Warehouses often house sophisticated tracking and material moving machinery, so industrial mechanics and technicians who can maintain and repair crucial equipment are much in demand, earning an annual median wage of $45,840 per year. Hand-eye coordination is important in warehouse work, along with mechanical skills. Some positions require the ability to lift heavy objects. Employers also look for dependability and alertness. Entry-level workers who are interested in advancement can earn supervisory slots or gain experience that leads to other jobs. ■

Manufacturing If your impression of a manufacturing job is a dreary grind in a hot, dirty plant, it’s time to bring that image up to date. “Often when people think of the manufacturing trades, they revert back to the 70s steel mills with someone working in a blast furnace under hazardous work conditions,” describes Charlie Kane, president of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “That’s not what most of today’s industry and manufacturing positions are. For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment. “The other side of it is understanding how far these careers can take you. I’ve got people working in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees. You can start off in one of these trades and rather than putting yourself in debt going to school, you’re making money initially as you learn your craft.” There is a wide range of jobs in the manufacturing trades. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and

we have warehouse positions,” lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors. Right now, these jobs are very much in demand. “There’s a kind of a gap in the workforce,” explains Kane. “Many of the people in the skilled trades are more than halfway through their careers and there are not enough new people going into the trades to replace them. That’s why we’re working with the community colleges and others to look at how we can create training programs to develop these skillsets and encourage people to go into them. “There is a new view of the U.S. in terms of competitiveness and an increased opportunity to produce products here and ship them overseas, and that helps grow the economy and improve our trade imbalance. So this is a career where you can actually feel like you’re making a difference in trying to improve economic conditions. “Unfortunately, I don’t think there is an awareness today of the type of work being done on the manufacturing side, especially for skilled tradespeople. If people investigate, they’ll find that the compensation levels, the work conditions, the career opportunities are all there,” says Kane. ■

Hiring Quality Craftsmen! Cii is a custom, conventional machine shop and service center for the paper, wood, coal and tobacco industries. We also do work for other trusted Machine Shops and O.E.M. customers. Our company has been operating in Copeland Park since 1990. We continued to grow in 2013 and are poised for substantial growth in 2014.

We are interviewing and hiring for the following positions: East Coast Repair and Fabrication, LLC

Machinist Watching a machinist create a precision metal part or a crucial tool is a demonstration of art, science and skill in action. In fact, this is a trade that caters to creative problem solvers. “This is a rewarding field in the sense that you can leave at the end of a day and you’ve accomplished something that you can actually see,” says Paul Zabicki, operations vice president at Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work. “We’re a custom shop where we do a lot of reverse engineering and design – I’m talking about people who can take raw materials in their most basic form and make them into something,” Zabicki says. “These are true craftspeople.” And well compensated craftspeople, at that. “We don’t even know what minimum wage is here, none of our jobs pay that low,” says Zabicki. “A conventional inside machinist with five to ten years of experience can easily make $50,000 to $65,000 a year, and that’s with a high school education. A worker that knows very little could be starting out $12, $14 an hour. Someone that’s sound in the trade can make almost $30 an hour straight time. And with most businesses like ours, you can’t find enough machinists to minimize your overtime, so you generally have these folks working overtime. Now all of a sudden after eight hours they are making $45 an hour. That’s a pretty good living,” Zabicki notes. Community colleges and technical schools offer a variety of training programs for those interested in the machining trade, and some companies offer in-house training. Craft Industrial trains new hires who possess a mechanical aptitude, an attention to detail, and basic math and English skills. “We bring them into the machine shop and they pick up lots of different experiences and skills on the job, so they’re being paid to learn,” says Zabicki. “And once you have a job here and are good at what you do, your job is very secure because this is an underserved industry. There is opportunity and there is reward. If you’re willing to put forth an effort, there’s stability, long-term growth and prosperity for the taking. I can’t say it any more simply than this – it’s the American Dream as it used to be, and it’s here for you,” says Zabicki. ■

• Conventional Machine Shop Foreman • Machine Shop Leadman • Conventional Machinists • Millwrights • Heavy Industrial Mechanics • Mechanical Design Engineer/Planner • Salesmen with extensive Paper Mill experience All of our positions require experience and practical application in industrial and/or machine shop environment. All positions are for 1st Shift!

HERE’S THE BEST PART! If hired, we will match your current vacation (up to three weeks) on an accrual basis and pay you for (6) holidays as they fall on the calendar.* All you will have to do is prove your current earned vacation! Also, for all shop floor positions, we are offering a one-time new hire retention bonus equal to 5% of your gross salary to be paid on your one year anniversary with the company and you will receive a $1/hr. raise after one year of service. Another great offering is that we pay weekly. In addition, we offer Flexible Spending Account and 401(k) Plan options. Finally, we have many employee assistance program options through our payroll provider. Also, we have a health insurance option that is co-pay based. Cii pays half the insurance premium with no current limitation on spouse and dependent coverage in terms of company premium allowance for insurance. You will not find this level of coverage at most shops!
