Te uwer informatie moge dienen dat ik op 15 juli 1976 in dienst ben getreden als Hoofd Passage Vervoersadministratie, waarna ik de functie van Area Manager Suriname & Caribbean bekleedde tot 1 maart 1984. Vervolgens ben ik benoemd tot vertegenwoordiger van de SLM Vestiging Nederland, alwaar ik gediend heb tot 5 december 2000. Vanaf die datum ben ik door de Aandeelhouder benoemd tot Algemeen Directeur, waardoor ik de totale leiding van de SLM op mij moest nemen. Ik heb die functie ingevuld tot en met 1 augustus 2004 waarna ik met pensioen ging. In deze periode van mijn directeurschap is de SLM gegroeid tot een winstgevend bedrijf waarbij enorme winsten zijn geboekt en mijlpalen zijn bereikt. Met uw ondersteuning zal ik het succes van de SLM voortzetten.

For your information, I would like to share with you that I started my job as Head of Transport Administration on July 15, 1976, after which I occupied the position of Area Manager Suriname & Caribbean until March 1, 1984. Subsequently I was appointed representative of the SLM establishment in the Netherlands, where I served until December 5, 2000. Since that date, I was appointed general manager by the shareholders and therefore I had the responsibility of overall leadership of the SLM. I have filled that post until August 1, 2004, after which I retired. During my time as general manager, the SLM developed into a healthy and profitable company that achieved significant milestones. With your support, I would gladly continue the success of the SLM.

Met “Culinair Suriname” als thema van deze 48ste editie van de Sabaku, wordt speciale aandacht besteed aan het ‘Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine’, dat onlangs is gehouden. Vier gerenommeerde Michelin sterrenchefs uit Nederland en België hebben tijdens deze 4e editie van Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine (keukenfeest) in Suriname met exclusieve diners en workshops geld ingezameld voor een goed doel. Een initiatief dat de SLM al jaren van harte ondersteunt.

In this edition, we will discuss the Surinamese cuisine which is globally known as one of the most diverse and tasteful cuisines. The unique blend of cultures which Suriname is known for, is best appreciated in the remarkable dishes that will enchant your taste buds. With ‘Culinary Suriname’ as theme of this 48th edition of the Sabaku, we will pay special attention to the recently held ‘Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine’. Four renowned Michelin starred chefs from the Netherlands and Belgium raised money for charity with exclusive dinners and workshops during this 4th edition of the ‘Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine’. This initiative has been supported wholeheartedly by the SLM for years.

Sabaku... Sabaku, zo heet dit inflight magazine van Surinam Airways. Je spreekt het uit als ‘sabbakoe’, met de klemtoon op de laatste lettergreep. Sabaku is het Surinaamse woord voor reiger. In Suriname leven achttien soorten reigers, waarvan er vier ‘sabaku’ worden genoemd. Deze kleine, sierlijke vogels zijn uitgerust met lange poten en een lange, krachtige snavel. De verschillende soorten leven vaak met elkaar samen. Bij zonsopkomst verlaten de sabaku’s collectief de gemeenschappelijke slaapverblijven in de mangrovebossen langs de rivier. Een kolonie vliegende reigers biedt een indrukwekkende aanblik. Aan het eind van de dag keren de vogels opnieuw in groepen terug naar hun onderkomens voor de nacht. Het wit van hun veren steekt dan mooi af tegen het roze of purper van de avondhemel. Sabaku’s zijn sociale vogels: ze slapen en broeden gemeenschappelijk. In Paramaribo vinden we een broedkolonie en slaapplaats van sabaku’s langs de Surinamerivier aan de monding van de Van Sommelsdijckskreek.

“Sabaku” is the name of Surinam Airways’ inflight magazine. It is pronounced “SA-BA-KOO” with the emphasis on the last syllable. Sabaku is the Surinamese word for the snowy egret (and some other species of egrets). Snowy egrets are small, graceful, long-legged birds with a long, pointed, powerful bill. At sunrise, the birds leave the communal roost and nesting sites within a short period of time. The stream of sabakus flying to their feeding grounds forms an impressive spectacle. At dusk, they return again in flocks to spend the night in the mangroves. The white wings of the sabakus then form a startling contrast with the pink or purple colour of the early evening sky. Sabakus are social birds. In Suriname, tens of thousands of sabakus breed and roost communally in the mangrove forests along the Atlantic coast. In Paramaribo, a breeding colony and nocturnal roost of sabakus, among which several snowy egrets, is found in the mangroves bordering the Suriname River at the mouth of the Van Sommelsdijckskreek.

Iedereen die Suriname binnenkomt, moet voortaan een douane passagiers-declaratieformulier invullen. Het nieuwe declaratieformulier komt samen met het reeds van toepassing zijnde immigratieformulier dat ingevuld en overhandigd moet worden aan de Militaire Politie. Het is in de internationale burgerluchtvaart gebruikelijk dat elke passagier zich bij binnenkomst in een land met zijn of haar bagage bij de douaneambtenaar aanmeldt en een passagiersdeclaratieformulier overlegt. Met de introductie van het passagiersdeclaratieformulier voldoet de Surinaamse douane aan een internationale verplichting, aangezien hierdoor wordt voorzien in het optimaliseren van de controle op de legale of illegale invoer van: verdovende middelen, bedreigde dier- en plantensoorten, alsook vuurwapens en munitie, persoonlijke- en handelsgoederen en vreemde valuta.

Everyone who enters Suriname needs to complete a passenger customs declaration form from now on. The new declaration form is filled in together with the already applicable immigration form that needs to be completed and handed to the Military Police. In international civil aviation, it is customary for every passenger to report to the customs officer with his or her baggage on arrival, and to hand over a passenger declaration form. With the introduction of the passenger customs declaration form, Surinamese Customs will adhere to an international obligation, seeing how this provides optimization of inspection regarding the legal or illegal import of: narcotics, endangered animals and plants, as well as firearms and munition, personal effects and commodities, and foreign currency. Vier gerenommeerde sterrenkoks uit Nederland en België hebben tijdens de 4e editie van Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine (feest van de keuken) in Suriname door middel van exclusieve diners en workshops, geld ingezameld voor een goed doel. Daarnaast werden (aanstaande) Surinaamse koks de fijne kneepjes van het vak geleerd die deze topkoks tot ware culinaire grootmeesters maken. Ook vertegenwoordigers van de internationale pers waren uitgenodigd door de organisatie van Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine en maakten zo ook kennis met Suriname en haar bijzondere multi-etnische keuken. Fête de la Cuisine kent twee doelstellingen. In de eerste plaats is het een fundraising om geld in te zamelen voor sociale projecten. Verder is het de bedoeling dat Surinaamse en buitenlandse chefs van elkaar leren door kennis over te dragen en ervaringen uit te wisselen. Opperste concentratie bij het uitserveren

Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine tracht met de opbrengsten van dit festival fondsen te genereren voor goede doelen. Voor 2016 is het doel een fonds op te richten waar gezinnen met een ernstig ziek kind en die het financieel moeilijk hebben, aanspraak kunnen maken op het kunnen uitvoeren van een noodzakelijke behandeling in Suriname of in het buitenland. De buitenlandse chefs werkten samen met enkele studenten van de Stichting Suriname Hospitality and Tourism Training Centre (SHTTC) en gebruikten overwegend lokale ingrediënten die ze persoonlijk uitkozen op de diverse markten en bij plaatselijke leveranciers in Paramaribo. Het team sterrenkoks bestond dit jaar uit: Gerard Wollerich (Restaurant Wollerich in Sint-Oedenrode),Alex Clevers (Restaurant Vivendum, Dilsen-Stokkem, België), Marco Cellini (Restaurant Cellini, Maasmechelen, België) en Peter Postma (Restaurant Kaatje bij de Sluis, in Blokzijl). De diners werden muzikaal omlijst door Delano Weltevreden en Ludwig Schenkers uit Nederland die versterking kregen van het jonge talent op de saxofoon, Noël Wielzen. Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine is een initiatief van de Stichting Para Park Suriname en in het bijzonder van de oprichters van de stichting Jean en Paul Nolet. Fête de la Cuisine Suriname is als evenement gebaseerd op het gelijknamige succesvolle culinaire festival op Sint-Maarten. Jean en Paul zijn vaste bezoekers van het Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine op Sint-Maarten. Samen met Henri Brookson, de bedenker en organisator van het festival op Sint-Maarten, hebben zij het

initiatief genomen om het festival te introduceren in Suriname. Brookson was samen met zijn vrouw eregast op Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine. De start van Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine vond plaats in Restaurant Baka Foto waar de sterrenkoks in samenwerking met eigenaar/ chef-kok MarcelWittenberg tien creatieve amuses met een Surinaamse twist serveerden die bijzonder in de smaak vielen bij de gasten. Courtyard by Marriott was op de tweede avond het decor van een verrukkelijk en exotisch 3-gangen menu. Het diner werd gestart met snoek met pasta truffels, waarna gelakte eend met bosui en lokale groenten volgden. Als laatste werd een tutti frutti dessert met rijstpap sabayon geserveerd. Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine werd afgesloten met een Gala Diner in Royal Torarica Hotel waar een 5-gangen menu werd geserveerd. Behalve het diner zelf werd de avond gevuld met live entertainment en een modeshow, waarbij Miss Supranational Suriname en Miss International Suriname, beide winnaar in 2013, een minishow liepen in jurken van Kirsten Regalado. De jurken van Regalado werden hierna samen met een exclusief kledingstuk van Gucci onder de aanwezigen geveild. Eén van de veilingmeesters was de bekende Surinaamse schrijfster Cynthia McLeod. Tussen de diners en de voorbereiding door bezochten de vier koks en de meegereisde journalisten uit Nederland, België en de VS diverse bijzondere locaties in Paramaribo en de districten, en kregen zo een goed beeld wat Suriname als toeristenbestemming, haar bezoekers te bieden heeft. De SLM is trots dat zij haar naam heeft verbonden aan dit bijzondere culinaire evenement dat steeds meer internationale belangstelling trekt en zal zeker in 2017 als Surinam Airways Fête de la Cuisine haar eerste lustrum (5e editie) viert, extra uitpakken zodat de goede doelen met de opbrengsten ondersteund kunnen worden. www.flyslm.com

Four reputable Michelin-star chefs from the Netherlands and Belgium have raised money in Suriname for a charity by having exclusive dinners and workshops during the Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine (party of the kitchen). Furthermore the (upcoming) Surinamese chefs were taught the tips and tricks which make these top chefs true culinary grandmasters. Representatives of the international press were also invited by the organization of Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine to explore and enjoy the multi-ethnic kitchen of Suriname.

Fête de La Cuisine has two goals. In the first place it is a place to raise money for social projects and secondly is it supposed to be a place where Surinamese and international chefs learn from each other by exchanging knowledge and experiences. Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine is hoping to raise funds for charities with this festival. For 2016 the goal is to start a fund targeted at families who have a seriously ill child, and are in financial trouble to help them receive special treatment in either Suriname or abroad. The international chefs worked together with some students of the foundation ‘Suriname Hospitality and Tourism Training Centre’ (SHTTC) and used mostly local ingredients which they chose personally from the number of markets and local suppliers in Paramaribo. The team of star chefs this year consisted of: Gerard Wollerich (restaurant Wollerich in Sint-Oedenrode), Alex Clevers (restaurant Vivendum, Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium), Marco Cellini (restaurant Cellini, Maasmechelen, Belgium) and Peter Postma (Restaurant Kaatje bij de Sluis in Blokzijl). The dinners were musically accompanied by Delano Weltevreden and Ludwig Schenkers from the Netherlands and the young saxophone talent Noël Wielsen. Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine is an initiative by the Para Park Suriname foundation and in particular by the founders of the foundation Jean and Paul Nolet. Fête de La Cuisine Suriname’ an event has been based on the homonymous successful culinary festival based on Saint-Martin. Jean and Paul are regular visitors of the Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine on Saint-Martin. Alongside Henri Brookson, the inventor and organizer of the festival on Saint-Martin, they took the initiative to also

introduce this festival in Suriname. Henri Brookson and his wife were honorary guests during Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine. The start of Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine took place in restaurant Baka Foto where the star chefs worked together with the owner and chef de cuisine Marcel Wittenberg to create ten creative amuse-bouches with a Surinamese twist which were enjoyed by the guests in particular. On the second evening, the Courtyard by Marriot was the set ting of a delightful and exotic three course meal. The dinner started off with pike and pasta truffles, followed by lacquered duck with spring onions and local vegetables. For dessert, a tutti-frutti with rice pudding sabayon was served. Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine finished off with a Gala Dinner in the Royal Torarica Hotel where a five course menu was served. Apart from the dinner itself, the evening was filled with live entertainment and a fashion show, where Miss Supranational Suriname and Miss International Suriname (both 2013) were walking a mini show in dresses by Kirsten Regalado. The dresses of Kirsten Regalado were, alongside an exclusive clothing piece by Gucci, auctioned amongst those present. One of the auctioneers was the famous Surinamese writer Cynthia McLeod. In between the dinners and the preparation, the four chefs and journalists from, amongst others, the Netherlands, Belgium and the USA visited some remarkable locations in Paramaribo and its districts. Because of this, they got a good image of Suriname as a tourist attraction and what it has to offer to its visitors. SLM is proud to be connected to this special culinary event which draws more and more international recognition and will, when Surinam Airways Fête de La Cuisine will celebrate its first lustrum in 2017 (5th edition), go all out so the charities will be helped to the max with the revenues made from this event.

Elk nieuwe album symboliseert een nieuwe fase in de carrière en het leven van Sabrina Starke: "Sinds het eerste album, ben ik voortdurend bezig met groeien en mezelf te ontwikkelen.Voor mij is een album een weerspiegeling van de tijd of fase waarin ik mezelf op dat moment in bevind. Op elk album hoor je mijn persoonlijke ervaringen, gevoelens, dromen, visioenen en meningen”.

Haar laatste album 'Sabrina Starke', is haar meest persoonlijke album tot nu toe. De thema’s die aan bod komen gaan over zelfbewustzijn en dromen. Sabrina kijkt kritisch naar zichzelf en de wereld waarin wij leven. Wat je hoort zijn haar wensen en dromen om van deze wereld een mooiere plek te maken. Haar besluit om het album zelf te produceren, heeft een groot stempel achter gelaten op de muzikale ontwikkeling van Sabrina. Het is een droom die uit is gekomen. Vele jaren geleden heeft Sabrina Starke (Paramaribo, 9 augustus 1979) haar baan als jongerenwerker opgegeven voor het onzekere bestaan van een singer-songwriter. Gewapend met een gitaar en een unieke stem, besloot ze om een stap vooruit te maken van back-up zanger van een reggaeband. Ze ging terug naar de essentie van een zanger-songwriter: schrijven en zingen, liedjes maken in de puurste vorm. Folk, soul en jazz zijn haar muzikale verwijzingen naar Nina Simone, Bill Withers en Tracy Chapman haar bronnen van inspiratie. Maar succes kwam niet gemakkelijk. Sabrina heeft een lange weg afgelegd voor haar doorbraak. Na jaren hard werken is Sabrina erin geslaagd om een sterke en indrukkende biografie op te bouwen. Het winnen van The Talent Night in 2006 bracht haar al tot een optreden in het Apollo Theater in New York. Kort daarna won ze

de muziekprijs VSB-fonds Music Matters Award. Met het geld dat ze won, financierde ze haar zelf gepubliceerde debuutalbum "Yellow Brick Road". Dit bracht haar onmiddellijk succes in Nederland samen met hit single "Do For Love" (2008). Het album werd opgepikt door Blue Note / EMI en stond in de album charts voor 52 opeenvolgende weken en werd bekroond met platina. Ook ontving ze een Edison Pop award in 2008 voor beste nieuwkomer. Twee jaar na de release van "Yellow Brick Road", verscheen haar tweede album "Bags & Suitcases" (2010). Het album werd opgenomen in Miami, Florida onder het toeziend oog van producent Pete Wallace, die met supersterren, zoals P!nk, Herbie Hancock en Alejandro Sanz heeft gewerkt. Pete Wallace produceerde ook het album "Outside The Box", uitgebracht op 1 juni 2012. "Lean on me", de songs van Bill Withers, werd uitgebracht op 3 mei 2013; een album met Withers klassiekers, dat is opgenomen met het Metropole orkest en onder leiding van Vince Mendoza. Dit album werd bekroond met een Radio 6 Award voor "Best Album" 2013. “Ik ben niet alleen gevleid. Ik ben onder de indruk. Sabrina hartelijk dank voor het vertolken van deze nummers met jouw prachtige stem. Je bent getalenteerd en een geschenk aan de wereld. " – Bill Withers. In 2015 won Sabrina voor de tweede keer een Radio 6 award voor "Beste Single" met het nummer "In The Morning”.

Naast muziek heeft Sabrina een grote interesse voor sociale maatschappelijk betrokken projecten. In 2009 sloot ze zich als ambassadeur aan bij One Men. Sabrina gelooft als One Men in de kracht van de individu en dat “One Men” een verschil kan maken voor anderen. Na vier jaar betrokken te zijn bij One Men was het tijd voor een nieuw project. In 2013 hielp Sabrina bij het ‘Dove Self Esteem Programma’. Dit project werd een topprioriteit voor haar. Het doel van het werken met "Dove" was het inspireren van meisjes om hun maximale potentieel te bereiken. In november van dat jaar bracht ze het lied "Toss Me A Dream" uit. Dit lied gaat over het bereiken van je hoogste doelen, en dat je wat je maar wilt kan bereiken. Sabrina's sociale missie is nog lang niet afgelopen. Ze voelt alsof het net is begonnen en dat alle projecten deel uitmaken van een grote puzzel en onderdelen zijn van een groter plan. Dit is waar ze in gelooft. Ze blijft deel uitmaken van projecten die persoonlijke groei, empowerment, zelfvertrouwen en talent van vrouwen en jongeren stimuleren en ontwikkelen. Sabrina Starke is toegewijd om via haar muziek haar kennis en inspiratie met anderen te delen, mensen te inspireren en hen bewust te maken over hun eigen leven en dromen. Net zoals één van haar muzikale helden, Nina Simone, zei: "Een kunstenaars plicht, voor zover ik weet, is om de tijden weer te geven”. Every new album symbolizes a new phase in the career and life of Sabrina Starke: “Since the first album, I have continuously been busy growing and developing myself. Her latest album ‘Sabrina Starke’, is her most personal album so far. The themes she wrote about are self-awareness and dreams. Sabrina looks critically at herself and the world we live in. What you will hear are her wishes for and dreams of making this world a more beautiful place. Her decision to produce the album herself left a big mark on Sabrina’s musical development, a dream that came true for her. Many years have past since Sabrina Starke (Paramaribo, August 9, 1979) of Rotterdam switched her steady job as youth worker, for the uncertain life of a singer-songwriter. Armed with a guitar and a unique voice, she decided to take a step forward from being a backup vocalist of a reggae band. She went back to the essence of a singer-songwriter: writing and singing songs in the purest form. Folk, soul, and jazz are her musical references. Amongst others, Nina Simone, Bill Withers and Tracy Chapman are her sources of inspiration. But success did not come easily. Sabrina had come a long way before her breakthrough. After years of very hard work, she managed to build up a strong and impressive biography. Winning the 2006 Talent Night in Amsterdam led her to performing at the Apollo Theater in New York. Shortly after, she won the Music Matters Award in the Netherlands and with the money she won,

she financed her self-published debut album “Yellow Brick Road”. This brought her immediate success in the Netherlands as well as a hit single “Do For Love” (2008).The album was picked up by Blue Note / EMI and was in the album charts for 52 consecutive weeks and was awarded platinum. She also received an Edison Pop award in 2008 for best new act. Two years after the release of “Yellow Brick Road”, her second album “Bags & Suitcases” (2010) was released. The album was recorded in Miami, Florida under the watchful eye of producer Pete Wallace, who worked with superstars, such as P!nk, Herbie Hancock and Alejandro Sanz. The same Pete Wallace also produced the album “Outside The Box”, released on June 1, 2012. “Lean on me”, the Songs of Bill Withers, was released on May 3, 2013; an album with Withers classics, which is recorded with the Metropole Orchestra, and conducted by Vince Mendoza. This album was awarded the Radio 6 Award for “Best Album” of 2013. “I’m not only flattered. I am impressed. Thank you Sabrina for lending your wonderful voice to these songs. You are gifted and a gift to the world.” – Bill Withers. In 2015, Sabrina won a Radio 6 award for “Best Single” for the second time with the song “In The Morning”.

If you take medicine regularly , be sure to always place this in your hand baggage. CHILDREN Are you traveling with a baby? The steward(ess) will gladly prepare the baby bottle for you. Please give sufficient advance notice so that your baby does not have to wait. On the Mid- Atlantic route ( Paramaribo- Amsterdam v. v.) we can in case of emergency also provide baby food and diapers(limited available). For older children on this route we have toys and books available. The children must drink a lot. If you are breast- feeding, you should also drink more than normal. Give your baby a pacifier or a bottle with liquid to lessen the pressure on the eardrums. Give an older child either candy or chewing gum. For yourself, you may either yawn or swallow to lessen the pressure. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Once you are on board the aircraft you may not use electronic equipment with transmitters and receivers. The use of cellular phones, laptops and other electronic equipment can disrupt the sensitive navigation system and are not allowed during take-off and landing. HAND LUGGAGE Every passenger is allowed one (1) piece of carry on hand luggage that fits easily under the aircraft seat. The luggage bins above your head are only intended for light articles such as hats, coats , flowers etc. Open the flap carefully so that items do not fall out.

CHEF PATRICK'S RECIPE SURINAAMSE BBQ SPARERIBS

SURINAMESE BBQ SPARERIBS

Hoofdgerecht - 4 pers. - 25 min. (minstens 3 uur in de koeling bewaren)

Main course - 4 people. - 25 min. (keep refrigerated for at least 3 hours before hand)

Ingrediënten • 1,5 kg spareribs • 1 Ui (fijngesneden) • 2 tl zwarte peper • 4 laurierblaadjes • 1 tl zout • 2 cm gember (geschild en fijngesneden) • 2 tenen knoflook (fijngesneden) • 20 g Bruine basterdsuiker • 300 ml BBQ-marinade of tropische ketjap • 100 ml sojasaus • 3 takjes selderie

Ingrediënten • 1,5 kg spareribs • 1 onion (finely chopped) • 2 tsp black pepper • 4 bayleaves • 1 tsp salt • 2 cm ginger (peeled and finely chopped) • 2 garlic cloves (finely chopped) • 20 g brown sugar • 300 ml BBQ-marinade of tropical soy sauce • 100 ml soy sauce • 3 springs of celery

Bereiding 1. Maak een papje in een vijzel van de knoflook, gember, ui, basterdsuiker en de selderie 2. Marineer de Spareribs met zout en peper daarna met het papje laat het ongeveer een half uur staan. 3. Voeg de marinade en sojasaus bij elkaar, marineer de Spareribs verder met de helft ervan. Laat het liefs een nacht in de koeling of minimaal drie uren rusten 4. Verhit de barbecue tot hij heet is, haal de Spareribs uit de koelkast en laat het op kamertemperatuur komen. Grill de Spareribs ± 4 minuten aan elke kant bestrijk het telkens met de overige marinade tot dat het bruin is (zie foto).

Preparation 1. Make a paste in a mortar of the garlic, ginger, onion, brown sugar and celery 2. Marinate the spareribs with salt and pepper followed by the paste and let it rest for half an hour 3. Add the marinade and soy sauce together, marinate the spareribs further with half of this. Preferably let it sit in the fridge overnight but for at least three hours 4. Heat up the barbeque until its really hot, take the spareribs out of the fridge and let it return to room temperature. Grill the spareribs for approximately 4 minutes. Spread the sparerib with the leftover marinade on each side until it turns brown (see picture).

Sery is een kleine man verstopt achter zijn drumstel maar een grote naam voor de echte muziekkenners. Een naam geëtst in de geschiedenis van de muziek. Joe Zawinul, oprichter van Weather Report, verkondigde zelfs dat hij de beste in de wereld was. Inmiddels heeft hij twee albums op zijn naam staan. De eerste ‘Voyages’ kwam uit in 2000 bij Blue Note/EMI en de tweede ‘The Real Life’ 12 jaar later. Deze laatste is voor zijn dochter Maï, die acht jaar geleden werd geboren en hem, ondanks zijn 60 jarige leeftijd, haast overal vergezeld. Het is alsof dit album een cadeau aan haar was, één waar zij steeds naar terug kan keren.

Paco Sery schreef muzikale geschiedenis, die begon in Divo, een kleine stad in Ivoorkust, ongeveer 250 km van Abidjan. Op negenjarige leeftijd kreeg hij een klap van zijn vader op zijn achterhoofd toen hij die vertelde over zijn muzikale voornemens. Die klap leidde ertoe dat hij zijn geluk ging beproeven als drummer in Dabou onder de pseudoniem ‘Paco Solo’. De rest is geschiedenis. “Mijn drums hebben mij geleerd aandacht te geven aan kleuren en hun oorsprong. Daarmee heb ik raciale en politieke grenzen overschreden. Ze spreken een universele taal”, zegt Sery. Paco Sery is een der hoogtepunten van de 14e editie van het Suriname Jazz Festival, samen met Fra Fra Sound (Nederland), Divinity Roxx (USA) en Luna Vicente (Mexico). He has recorded only two albums for himself. The first of which, “Voyages“ released in 2000 under Blue Note/EMI and a second one twelve years later, “The Real Life“. This album is for his little girl Maï, born eight years ago whom he accompanies hand in hand, well aware of his 60 years. It’s as if this album was a gift to her, to which she can return again and again. He wrote musical history, making his debut in Divo. a little town in the Ivory Coast about 250km from Abidjan, where he received a smack from his father’s hand at the age of nine after announcing his musical intentions. The smack led to the boy’s escape to try his luck as a dance hall drummer in Dabou under the pseudonym “Paco Solo”. The rest is history. “My drums taught me not to pay attention to colors or origins. With them, I’ve crossed racial and political boundaries. They speak a universal language”, says Sery. OWRUYARI-GERECHTEN: HER’HERI, MOKSI ALEYSI, PINDASOEP, GEROOSTERD VARKEN, POM, PASTEI…

31 december, Owruyari, de laatste dag van het jaar, staat symbool voor feest en vuurwerk in Suriname. Heel veel vuurwerk. In de binnenstad van Paramaribo komt de toestroom van toeristen en lokale bewoners al vroeg in de ochtend op gang, totdat er bijna geen doorgang meer is.

VIER OWRUYARI OUD EN NIEUW IN SURINAME

De afsluiting van het jaar begint al vroeg in de maand. Voor degenen die kerst vieren, worden de kerstlichtjes en versiering uit de kast gehaald en krijgt het huis een grote schoonmaakbeurt om daarna versierd te worden. Bij sommigen is het zo extreem dat het een bezienswaardigheid is. In Suriname hangt de hele maand december een feest- (maar vooral gezellige) sfeer. Meer dan anders zijn Surinamers in die ene maand één. De ‘mofo koranti’ draait op volle toeren. Mensen vertellen elkaar waar de leukste feesten zijn en nodigen elkaar uit.

Cateringbedrijven doen eveneens goede zaken, want degenen die niet willen koken, plaatsen al vroeg in de maand of zelfs al enkele maanden van tevoren een flinke bestelling. Op bijna elke hoek in het centrum staat de barbecue waarop saté (van kip, rund of kaaimanstaart) en karbonade smeulen.

Overal in Suriname worden feesten georganiseerd met bandjes, eten en drinken. Ook kantoren, ministeries en winkels sluiten het jaar op eigen manier af met een pagara (een grote rol vuurwerk variërend van 25 tot 400 meter). Een groep winkeliers in het centrum organiseert samen het pagarafestijn. Om 12 uur ‘s middags begint het gebulder bij het Valliantsplein, op de hoek van de Keizerstraat en Domineestraat en dit gaat door tot de Steenbakkerijstraat. Tegen die tijd zijn die straten overvol. Er is geen doorgang meer. Alleen voor de pagara. Dan houdt iedereen op advies van de brandweer een veilige afstand en deelt een service-organisatie oordopjes uit en een andere mondkapjes. Traditiegetrouw sluit de feestmenigte de dag af bij café ‘t Vat.

Surinamers vieren de jaarwisseling, dus om 00.00 uur, het liefst thuis, maar de afgelopen jaren is daar een bijstelling in gekomen en spreken familieleden en vrienden ergens af. Voor de jongere generatie, die de hele maand in een staat van euforie verkeert, is middernacht het absolute hoogtepunt. Zelfs CNN vindt de Owruyari in Suriname bijzonder. In 2012 werd de oud op nieuw-viering betiteld als ‘the place to be’.Voor veel Surinamers in diaspora is de jaarwisseling bijzonder en wordt er het hele jaar door gewerkt en gespaard om ‘thuis’ te zijn.

Voor de mensen die liever thuisblijven, is het een komen en gaan van familieleden, vrienden, en buren. Ook daar wordt er gefeest met lekker eten, drinken en ja, veel vuurwerk natuurlijk. De man of vrouw des huizes staat al vroeg in de ochtend in de keuken om allerlei hapjes en gerechten klaar te maken. Traditionele gerechten tijdens hoogtijdagen, dus ook op Owruyari

Suriname staat bekend als een vredelievend land waar alle culturen met of zonder geloofsovertuiging vredig naast elkaar leven. In de maand december, en met name Owruyari, komt dat extra tot uiting. Ondanks de verschillende gewoonten en gebruiken die elke bevolkingsgroep erop na houdt. Suriname is cultuur- en traditiegevoelig, maar eenieder heeft daar respect voor en leeft met elkaar mee. Owruyari betekent dat iedereen gelijk is. Alle cultuurverschillen, rijk of arm, dik of dun en alle andere verschillen vallen die dag weg en wie elkaar tegenkomt roept gebroederlijk ‘Wan bun nyun yari’.

NEW YEAR’S EVE IN SURINAME

The end of the year already starts early in the month. For those who celebrate Christmas, the lights and decorations are being dusted off and the house is getting cleaned to the full, to get decorated afterwards. Some take this to the extreme which turns their house into a true sightseeing spot. Throughout December, you will enjoy a festive (and especially pleasant) atmosphere in Suriname. The people of Suriname are even more connected during this month. De ‘mofo korantie’ is in full swing. People tell each other where the most incredible parties are and will invite one another to their house.

As of late other recipes are also making their way into the festivities, such as sweet and sour fish, salads, multiple kinds of pasta and cold dishes. Catering companies are also doing quite well, because those who do not want to cook will place an order early in the month or some even months in advance. At every street corner in the city center you will find a barbeque with sate (chicken, beef or caiman tail) and steak.

Everywhere in Suriname you will find parties with bands, food and drinks. Also offices, ministries and shops are ending the year in their own fashion with a pagara (a giant piece of fireworks varying from 25 up to 400 meters). A large group of shopkeepers in the center will organize the pagarafest. At noon the roaring will start at the Balliantsplein, around the corner of the Keizerstraat and the Domineestraat, and this continues all the way up to the Steenbakkerijstraat.When it gets to this, the streets will be packed.You simply cannot get through anymore, only the pagara can. Everybody will take a safe distance on advice of the fire department and a service organization will hand out earplugs and another one will hand out mouth caps. The party crowd will end at the café ‘t Vat, as by tradition.

The people of Suriname celebrate New Year’s Eve at midnight, preferably at home, but a change has been happening over the last few years where family and friends will meet somewhere else. For the younger generation, which is in a state of trance for the entire month, midnight is the absolute highlight of the day. Even CNN considers Owruyari in Suriname special. In 2012 the New Year’s Eve celebration was considered as ‘the place to be’.To many Surinamese outside of the country, New Year’s Eve is something they need to be present at, for which they will save up all year. Suriname is known as a peace-loving country where all cultures, with or without religious believes, live side by side peacefully. In the month of December, and in particular during Owruyari, this is pointed out even more, despite the differences in habits and customs which each ethnic group has. Suriname is sensitive about culture and traditions, but everyone respects each other and has sympathy for one another. Owruyari means that everyone is equal. All the cultural difference, rich or poor, fat of thin and all other differences are nowhere to be found during that day and everyone will come together and yell brotherly ‘Wan bung njung yari’.

The SLM has another premiere with the ‘SLM ABASSADOR program’. One of the most important tasks in the marketing area of the national carrier of Suriname is to bring out the Surinamese identity. In complete accordance with this endeavor we give our passengers the opportunity to meet extraordinary Surinamese talent in person and to exchange thoughts with them through the SLM AMBASSADOR program. The SLM-ambassador is a famous Surinamese person or someone else of Surinamese origin, who has been contracted by SLM to give their fellow passengers inside info about the field they work in during the flight, and also when the opportunity arises, to have them enjoy their talent. Ambassadors are icons in the field of sports, dance, literature, music, movies and cabaret.The informal atmosphere during the

meeting on the flight will no doubt help in having pleasant memories for both the passengers and the ambassadors. Patrick Rechars is one of the most famous and most asked Surinamese chefs in both Suriname and the Netherlands. He recently started publishing a widely read Surinamese culinary column in the Sabaku. De Hans Schenk Commemorative Award for Most Innovative Dish utilizing Indigenous Ingredients is voor Chef Gilbert Wirjomoenawi die de prijs in de wacht wist te slepen met zijn gerecht waar cassave op drie verschillende manieren was klaargemaakt. In het gerecht met als toepasselijke naam ‘A journey from Java to the Caribbean’ waren cassavebroodjes, pepre-watra en een bojo van domii en kokorie verwerkt. Het was dit zelfde gerecht dat hem de gouden medaille in de categorie Seafood Competition opleverde.

In the dish with the aptly name "A journey from Java to the Caribbean" there was cassava bread, pepre-watra and bojo of Domii and kokorie. It was this same dish that earned him the gold medal in the category Seafood Competition. He simply wowed the judges.

In 2014 werden in Nederland de Surinaamse Koto en Angisa op de lijst van immaterieel erfgoed geplaatst. De Koto is de traditionele Surinaamse klederdracht die door velen gezien wordt als de nationale feestkleding van de Afro-Surinaamse vrouwen. De Koto wordt gedragen op verjaardagen, huwelijken, dansfeestjes, culturele plechtigheden en begrafenissen. Tijdens deze plechtigheid gaf de bekende historicus Dr. Hein Eersel aan dat het aan de Surinaamse gemeenschap ligt om ervoor te zorgen dat de Koto en Angisa allesbehalve stoffige museumstukken worden die van tijd tot tijd uit de mottenkast worden gehaald. “Cultureel erfgoed moet niet statisch blijven, maar dynamisch zodat het een inspiratiebron voor jongeren wordt die vanuit hun

De vroegere Angisa is een geschiedenisdoek waarop boodschappen zijn omschreven. De Angisa als hoed bestaat uit een doek van ongeveer een vierkante meter die eerst plankhard gesteven is en daarna wordt gevouwen. Een goed gebonden Angisa wordt open afgezet als een hoed. De doek kan op diverse verschillende manieren worden gebonden en de stof wordt – waar nodig – vastgezet met knopspelden. De bindwijze van de Angisa is een middel waarmee de vrouwen mededelingen doen. Ze zeggen iets over de gemoedstoestand van de draagster of hebben een symbolische betekenis. De verschillende bindvormen van de Angisa hadden vroeger allemaal een eigen naam. De Afro-Surinaamse vrouwen die in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw naar Nederland gekomen zijn, hebben de Koto en de Angisa een definitieve plaats in Nederland gegeven en ervoor gezorgd dat de kleding werd gemoderniseerd. The Angisa is an inextricable part of the only authentic Surinamese traditional costume, and is much more than a good-looking or functional headdress.

THE KOTO AND ANGISA ARE ON THE DUTCH LIST OF INTANGIBLE HERITAGE

The Angisa has a wealth of stories, lore and wisdom behind it. Through the many different ways of wrapping, the wearer can signify whether she’s looking for a quarrel, wants to invite a secret lover, or is conveying a message. The Angisa also takes up an extraordinary position in Surinamese culture, because it marks historic events. Designer Jane Schubert creates Angisas 2.0: modern, wearable and beautiful creations with a lot of respect for the historic significance of this unique Surinamese piece of clothing.

In 2014, the Surinamese Koto and Angisa were placed on the list of intangible heritage in the Netherlands. The Koto is the traditional Surinamese dress, seen by many as the national celebratory clothing of Afro-Surinamese women. The Koto is worn on birthdays, weddings, dance parties, cultural ceremonies and funerals. During the ceremony, famous historian Dr. Hein Eersel noted that it falls to the Surinamese community to prevent the Koto and Angisa from becoming dusty old museum exhibits, which are only occasionally taken out of the wardrobe. “Cultural heritage should not remain static, but dynamic, so that it becomes a source of inspiration for young people, who, from their own heritage, can develop new forms to propagate their culture,” the historian said.

Jane Schubert, with her unique and creative Angisa creations, personally ensures that this very Surinamese headdress is still seeing a lot of popularity, both with Surinamese and Dutch women.

Her creations are handmade hats and hair accessories with a history. These creations are an unusual combination of art, fashion and history. Cultural history is thus reinvigorated in a refreshing manner, with various materials and techniques. Jane uses her expertise in Surinamese-Creole traditional dress, and her experience making the Angisa, as a source of inspiration “for modern wearable expressions of art, intended for every woman who wants to showcase her personality with her hat.” Jane studied the history of Surinamese-Creole traditional dresses for years. She chose to study the headdress, ‘Angisa’, in particular. She was fascinated by the production method and function of the headdress. In the times of colonial rule, the headdress served as a means of communication, conveying (hidden) messages about the wearer, such as her mood, her love life and social life.

The Angisa of old is a historical canvas on which messages are written. As a hat, the Angisa consists of a piece of fabric of about one square metre, which is first stiffened, and then folded. A well-wrapped Angisa can be put on and taken off like a hat. The cloth can be wrapped in various ways, and the fabric is affixed – where necessary – with pins. The way in which the Angisa is wrapped, is a means for the women to convey messages. They say something about the wearer’s mood, or have a symbolic significance. The various Angisa wrapping ways all used to have their own name in the past. The AfroSurinamese women who came to the Netherlands in the 1970s, have given the Koto and the Angisa a permanent place in the Netherlands, and have driven the clothing’s modernization. Since 2014, the Koto and Angisa have been on the Dutch list of intangible heritage.
