Welcome to Howls & Prowls!

Hello there!

Thank you for booking your obedience training with us, we look forward to getting to know you and your canine companion over the course of the term. I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and give you a little bit more information about myself and Howls & Prowls as a whole.

Who is behind Howls & Prowls?

My name is Amy and I am a qualified and accredited trainer with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT). I was an assistant dog trainer since 2018, working to gain experience and knowledge of all things dog whilst studying to become qualified as a trainer. I gained my certification in 2022 and have completed level 3 dog training courses that are certified by the OCN as well as being a part of the UK Dog Behaviour & Training Charter.

The dog training industry is currently unregulated in the UK, I therefore decided that I would not begin to offer my services until I had gained sufficient experience, knowledge and qualifications. There is a lot of conflicting information out there which can be a nightmare for owners to navigate and try to wrap their heads around and I wanted to take that concern away from them by offering reassurance that the qualifications I have are recognised by a reputable certifying body. I have invested a lot into my education so that I can offer you as pet owners the very best and most up to date knowledge of dog training.

I’m constantly working on my Career Professional Development (CPD) and have a number of new qualifications that I am working towards, so watch this space for more.

Our Mission

I think we can all agree that dogs are amazing. They enrich our lives so much and provide us with so much joy and laughter (most of the time!) They are sentient, emotional beings just like humans and each and every one is their own unique personality.

It is for this reason why I aim to nurture the bond between you and your dog, giving you the skills to make the most of your dog so that you can have a happy and fantastic life together.

I have many, many plans and visions for my dog training business and I look forward to being able to offer more to my clients and their dogs as things progress.

Whether you are considering getting a puppy, are about to pick you new furry friend up or have brought them home already, Howls & Prowls are here to help!

It is easy to forget or underestimate how difficult raising a puppy can be, especially when they are adorably cute and the excitement is fresh. Sometimes having a puppy isn’t what we expected it to be, and that’s okay! We are here to help with advice and support before, during and after the puppy phase.

Puppy

Adolescence / Life Skills

Picture the scene: your puppy is making leaps and bounds in their training progress, things are all coming together nicely and you start to relax into life together. Then, one day your dog gets out of bed and is like a whole other dog has taken their place. Suddenly, they’ve lost their recall, they can’t hear your cues or act like you’ve never taught them a “sit” or a “down” in their entire life and you’re wondering whatever happened to your sweet, sweet puppy. Sound familiar?

Welcome to adolescence!

Your dog is going through a lot of changes during this time and although it can be frustrating for us owners, they will get through it. And just like with a human teenager, support and understanding are a must when dealing with hormones.

Howls & Prowls offers a Life Skills class, perfect for those adolescent dogs who just need to reminder of what they have learned previously and to keep on top of their training routine throughout all the changing happening to them. They will get through this stage, and we are here to support you and them through it all.

Adult Obedience

Once you have mastered the foundations of training such as marker words, reinforcement etc, you can work up the levels of obedience classes that we offer. These are designed to be more difficult than the foundation classes and we work towards increasing distance, distraction and duration to your training in order to really solidify your dogs learning. Other Training

Amy is currently completing a course in scent work and hopes to be able to offer classes and 121’s for this in the future as well as working towards becoming a Canine Behaviourist.

Training walks, puppy play time and social hounds are other events currently being considered by Howls & Prowls. If any of these sound appealing to you, please let us know so that we can gauge interest and potentially arrange something in the near future.

1-2-1 Training

121’s are perfect for anyone with specific training goals in mind as each session is tailored to you and your aims. Or it could be that you have a nervous dog that needs some help with confidence building, they could be a rescue dog or you have a specific issue that you want help with.

Sometimes group classes just aren’t the right fit for some dogs, and that is totally fine! It might be that you don’t know this until you’ve booked with us and attended the class only to realize that they aren’t for you. No worries! We will swap you to 121 training and advise you on the best course of action in this instance.

You can choose where and when you’d like your 121 to take place, we offer online, in your own home or at a pre agreed location such as your local park if that’s where you’ve been having issues. Our trainer can also join you on walks or on location to get true to life training.

Lifetime Support

It is fair to say that dogs gift us with many, many positives in our lives. The ‘ups’ of spending your life with a dog are numerous. Things aren’t always idyllic, and sometimes difficult choices have to be made or the worst can happen. Even during these difficult times, we are here for you and your dog - our support doesn’t just stop when you’ve finished classes with us. You are free to reach out to us at any stage in your dogs life and indeed, we welcome updates.

If you have a funny story to share, a training win, a low or anything else related to your canine companion we would like to know. Luisa – Galen Myotherapy

Luisa has been working with dogs in a professional capacity for over 15 years. She runs a busy consultancy practice covering Sussex, Surrey, and parts of Berkshire and Kent, but has travelled as far afield as Essex, Hertfordshire, Norway and Estonia to treat and run workshops.

She has experience in treating a variety of interesting and complex cases, from dogs with chronic pain and postural issues including those with existing underlying conditions such as osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, spondylitis and other orthopaedic conditions, to those exhibiting more subtle postural, performance, gait and behavioural problems. She aims to provide an empathetic, caring, professional, comprehensive, and effective service, supporting both you and your beloved dog.

Luisa is also actively involved in the UK dry land sleddog scene.

She is fully qualified (BSc Equine Science, MSc Animal Manipulation, Dip. Canine Myotherapy), insured, and registered with both Galen Myotherapy and IAAT (International Association of Animal Therapists).

She works to a robust and code of conduct, and with veterinary consent (this is a legal requirement of therapists in the UK), using a combination of detailed case history, thorough assessments, analysis and hands on techniques to assess your dog, while working closely with you throughout the treatment process so that you are fully informed. Your expectations are discussed, feedback on your dog’s issue is provided, and clear precise aftercare advice is given. All while liaising closely with any other professionals you and your dog are seeing to ensure a consistent, team approach.

Cat – McTimoney Therapist

Cat Ferguson is a fully qualified and insured animal therapist, specialising in McTimoney chiropractic and soft tissue techniques. Cat provides a friendly and professional service, and her qualifications include a MSc in Animal Manipulation from the McTimoney College of Chiropractic and a Graduate Certificate in Animal Therapy. Cat is regulated by the McTimoney Animal Association (MAA) – the professional body for McTimoney Animal Practitioners.

Cat works alongside vets and other paraprofessionals to reach the very best treatment outcomes for your animal. Veterinary consent or referral is required for treatment to take place.
