"With a united effort we can make the place in which we live clean, wholesome, attractive. We can make the crowded city dweller homesick to come back to us and real living. We can bring new life, new business, new beauty, to the little towns." - Mame Roberts

how she could handle the workload. A year later, she took a job at Celeste as an assistant and stayed for two years before feeling comfortable to run a program again as a head coach.

“When I had that kind of bug, then I knew,” said Anderson who is now fully recovered and has to do follow-ups every two years.

After the two years as an assistant at Celeste, she became a head coach again in Lindsay where she stayed for a year before going back to Celeste where they offered her the head basketball and girls coordinator position in 2018. She guided the Blue Devils three rounds deep in the playoffs that season before losing to eventual state champion Martin Mill.

But Anderson continues to get calls from former schools, and she returned to her hometown of Trenton in 2019 to become the head volleyball coach and assistant basketball coach under her former high school coach. When he stepped down, Anderson took over as head basketball coach for the 2020-21 season.

When Anderson was hired as an assistant at Howe for this season, Lands was as excited and spouted her talents and abilities to anyone that would listen. Now that Lands has announced his retirement, it feels like a plan has been in place for nearly a year or so.

“We had some discussions, but I was just excited to be in this program,” said Anderson who has worked with Lands in the Lone Star Hoops Camps for many years during the summers in Howe. “I’ve known Coach Lands since, basically, I was born. One of my best friends is his niece. Our journeys through sickness have really bonded us through the year,” said Anderson. “Getting to come over here and just be a part of what he already had going. I was okay with just being an assistant or whatever the future held because I wanted to be here.”

Anderson is the head girls track coach right now and is also an assistant in volleyball.

Looking back on the 2021-22 season, Anderson says that it was unfortunate to lose Trinity Williams and Avery Snapp to season-ending injuries which changed the dynamic of the team during the season. But that forced Howe to go with younger players such as LaShay Thornton and Presley Shockey which she feels will benefit the program immediately and sped up the process of gathering experience for younger players.

“Those kids got so much more time on the court than what they would have otherwise,” said Anderson. “I also think we have some younger JV kids that put in a lot of work and bought into some things. We’re hoping some of those can step up and fill some roles.”

In her first head coaching position at Dodd City, her team won 10 games the first year, but were forced to start four freshmen the following year. But her third year saw Dodd City go three rounds deep.

“Every year after that, we made the playoffs and went two or three rounds deep,” said Anderson. “My fourth year there, we started winning district championships and I don’t think they’ve lost a district championship since.”

Anderson also had playoff experience with Lindsay when they knocked off number one seeded Muenster in the first round. At Celeste, she guided the Lady Blue Devils to three rounds deep in the playoffs before the Martins Mill loss.

“I’ve been fortunate throughout my career. We’ve had kids that bought in, and we were able to have success,” said Anderson.

She says she’s very passionate and intense at times on the court. She’s told the players that they may not have seen the “real Coach Anderson” yet.

If it weren’t for that one class she had remaining at Tarleton before graduating, she might be coaching somewhere there instead of landing a job at Trenton.

“If I’d have gotten sick out there, it would have been a lot harder for me,” said Anderson. “God has a plan for everything through this craziness of my life and I’m excited to be here.”
