Texas History

Charles Roy Lynch, Charlie, Tuna, a beloved father, brother, papaw, pawpaw, pa-tun, uncle, and friend was born in Marion, Kentucky on July 19, 1944 to Roy and Leora Lynch. He went to be with the Lord at his home in Sherman, Texas on May 8, 2021. He grew up on an 800-acre farm in Crane Kentucky with his parents and four siblings.

He attended Kings Trail Cowboy Church in Whitewright, Texas where he was saved and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior. He was his grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s biggest and loudest fan at their sporting events. He was known by all for his huge Tuna hugs, strong handshakes, and quick wit. He was a hard worker, everybody’s best friend, a hero to many, and loved with his whole heart and then some. He was a licensed meat cutter for many years and retired from Denison Walmart, where he considered many as family rather than coworkers. After retirement he worked at the City of Howe in the Public Works department where he became a well-known member of the community, as the old man in the funny hat that kept the grass cut and the city looking good. Tuna loved life, his family, his friends, his horses, watching and feeding his birds, going to the races, and junking. Tuna never met a stranger and would give the shirt off his back, but most of all he loved visiting with family and friends, telling stories, a good meal and would fight you over banana pudding. Tuna is preceded in death by his wife Pat Lynch, father Roy Lynch, mother Leora Lynch, brother Eddie Lynch, and sister Wanda Guess.

He is survived by his sister Kathy Schraer, her husband Wayne Schraer, and his brother Howard

HDF pays off loan for Summit Gardens

The Howe Development Foundation made a final payment of $1,200 last Friday to Scott Wortham who had loaned the organization $15,000 in 2019 for materials to complete the Summit Gardens venue. The payoff came several years ahead of the original due date. Summit Gardens is now free and clear to operate.

mons showed up believing the park was going to be named “Dynamite Division Park” after last year’s senior class that he had named. But that was only the cover story as Howe Mayor Bill French decided some time ago to name the park “Coach Simmons Park” with approval from the city council.

French tasked Howe’s Economic Development Director Monte Walker to organize the surprise and several of his co-workers, former students and athletes showed up in his honor.

Walker asked Simmons to give a speech about the Dynamite Division which he later stated was uncomfortable knowing that it was not going to be named Dynamite Division Park, but it allowed him to do what he loves the most and that’s talk about his Howe Bulldog kids.

Walker then told the audience that it would not be named Dynamite Park, but then read the bio of Coach Simmons and two of his former students, Michael Garza and Mahlon Walker unveiled a Coach Simmons Park sign.

“It was after he started talking was when I realized are they going to put my name on that sign then I realized what they were doing and there it is,” Simmons told KXII. “I’m thankful to this town and everything this community has done for me and my family and it’s priceless to see my name associated with Howe Texas in anyway it means a lot to me it’s very important very special,” Walker told KXII that when anyone hears the name Coach Simmons, the first thing they think about is Howe Texas, and when you think about Howe Texas one of the first things you think about is Coach Simmons.

“We are highly motivated truly dedicated rough tough can’t get enough Howe Bulldogs arg,” Simmons told KXII.

He later joked that he’s ready to build a waterslide onsite that spills out into the creek.

The bio that was read about Steve Simmons:

Steve Simmons was born to be a Bulldog. Although originally a Georgia Bulldog fan from Griffin, Georgia. His father, a pastor, moved his family to Fort Worth, Texas to attend seminary school. While in school in Fort Worth, he never got to see playing time on the football field and sometimes didn’t even get to practice although he desperately wanted to play. After the family moved to (Continued on page 8)

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced last week he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $1.06 billion in local sales tax allocations for May, 28.4 percent more than in May 2020 and 21.9 percent more than in May 2019.

These allocations are based on sales made in March by businesses that report tax monthly and sales made in January, February

and March by quarterly filers.

In Howe, the figure was $54,123 which is up 40.99 percent above May 2020. Howe is up by a total of 22.1 percent from 2020.

The Texoma Patriots have partnered with FreedomWorks on the Dallas leg of America’s Comeback Tour 2021 and will feature “Mr. Brexit” Nigel Farage and Reverend C.L. Bryant on Thursday, May 20 at 6:30 pm at The Point Restaurant at Grandpappy Point on Lake Texoma, 1711 Harbor Road, Denison, Texas. The restaurant will be open for dinner for those who come early. Happy Hour is from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Farage will speak about how grassroots activists played an integral part in the Brexit movement in Great Britain which led to Britain’s independence from the centralized power of the European Union.

“The American conservative movement can take back this country by offering people a hopeful image of the future” says Nigel.

Nigel Farage, a veteran grassroots campaigner, was first elected to the European Parliament in 1999. He fought an inspirational battle for decades to take Britain out of the European Union. His staunch nationalism and unapologetic populism made him a darling of the working classes and a formidable opponent to the comfortably corrupt cronyism of the European Union in Brussels. His appeal to the forgotten men and women of Britain was instrumental in forcing the Brexit vote in 2016. He remained active in British politics to ensure that Brexit was eventually achieved in January 2020.

Reverend C. L. Bryant is a dynamic and highly sought after motivator, activist, Gospel Preacher, and film producer. He has been a minister for nearly four decades and spent time as a missionary in the Amazon. He has also worked in the financial sector for 25 years and is the former NAACP President for the Garland, TX, unit. Bryant currently hosts his own radio show and frequently works on other multimedia projects, including FreedomWorks’ video series Real Talk.
